This will likely end up being a long post. It’s just for therapeutic reasons, I don’t expect anyone to read through the whole way. But if you do, I appreciate it.
A bit of background: Luna was my rescue greyhound. A former racer. She came to Canada from Florida at 3 years old with I think 9 other greyhounds. She was last to be adopted from that group. I am so so lucky that I was chosen to be her new mama. She was the sweetest angel and everyone that met her fell in love. I lost her in November 2022 at the age of 11. She had severe arthritis and a nerve disorder. I made the heart wrenching decision to have her euthanized. It’s been nearly three months since I said goodbye and it hasn’t gotten any easier. I’m hoping that this letter will help with my healing.
Dear Luna, There are no words. No words to effectively describe how much I love you and how much it hurts me everyday that I had to make that difficult decision on your behalf. You were so loved, not just by me - but by everyone who met you. After you passed, someone told me that “pets give us the best days of our lives, and one of the worst”. That couldn’t be more true.
The early days with you were filled with anxiety on my end, and perhaps for you too. You were timid, but had no choice but to trust me. You had to learn how to be a house pet after your racing career, and that wasn’t easy. But soon enough you began to learn to enjoy your retirement, and along the way you learned that I was someone you could trust. Your adorable personality began to blossom, and soon we were inseparable.
You gave me a lot of laughs in our time together. I’ll never forget the day I came home from work and you had taken my bra to your bed to cuddle. Or when I came home from a trip and you got the zoomies because of how excited you were to see me again. You gave me a good laugh the first time I took you to a beach and you decided to taste the salt water, resulting in a facial grimace I didn’t know a dog could make. Thank you for those memories.
I loved that we did so many activities together. You loved our weekly meetups with the other greyhounds in town. You loved road trips to the camper. You loved going to visit family. Those memories are special to me.
You made people smile. You were a conversation starter for me - strangers on the street always asked if you were a racer, and they admired your wardrobe of fleece coats and sweaters. People always commented on how calm and well behaved you were. I was lucky to have a dog like you.
You had a strong appreciation for things that made you comfy. You loved your soft bed. You liked the warmth of blankets on a cold night, and loved to lay by the heater. You also loved soft things, especially your stuffies, and often used them as a place to rest your head. I still have your stuffies. You never tore them apart, but always kept them in good condition. I don’t have the heart to get rid of them just yet.
Luna, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you. Thank you for being the best companion I could have ever asked for. Thank you for the lessons you’ve taught me and the memories we made together. I’m glad we had such a bond that made saying goodbye so difficult. Please understand that I didn’t want to say goodbye, I just didn’t want you to hurt anymore. You deserved to go to a place where you could run freely, as you loved to do. I’ll never forget holding your head in my hands as you drifted off, knowing that you were leaving your aged body for one that will never feel pain again.
Luna, you’re forever in my heart.

Hi all,
I recently completed the rough-in work on a small off-grid cabin I'm building as a full time residence for myself and my family. All the electric work has passed inspection and I'm moving onto making the final connections and creating an inlet box.
Here's my situation, I'm needing an inlet box that powers the main breaker (again this is off-grid so there are no utility connections to the building or anywhere within 100 acres of the place). All appliances inside the house run on 120V. So I have a 120V built in oven, 120V water heater, and a 120V washedryer combo. We are using as little electricity as possible, on purpose.
I'm running the house with the generator and my Bluetti AC500 power station. In general the house will be connected to the AC500 Full time but I would like the option to plug the generator in directly. The generator has a maximum output of 4500W and has two 20amp receptacles and a 30amp/120V receptacle. Most of the 30amp and 50amp inlet boxes I've found to purchase are setup for 240V. Which brings me to my first question, if the generator is putting out 120V will plugging it into the 240 V inlet cause both hot wires that run from the inlet to the electrical panel to hot or only one? I suppose I could plug it in a test them but thought there may be an answer for this already.
Same goes for my Bluetti AC500, currently it outputs only 120V but it has both a 30amp and a 50amp receptacle. If I purchase two Bluetti AC500s I can run 240V in the future, which I would like to do at a later date. With that being said, it may better to set up a 50 amp inlet and use an adapter to the generator in the meantime. This may be necessary to get the full 5000W from the Bluetti AC500 anyway, being that I would need to plug into the 50 amp/120V receptacle.
I've already discussed the 120V connection on the electrical panel with my local inspector and got the okay. I will splice a single hot wire which will then run into both lugs.
I hope that I've provided enough information and will do my best to answer any questions.

2023.02.03 02:50 Trailmagic [MD] I can’t afford to live here and I can’t afford to leave. I have my heat turned off because it’s too expensive and doesn’t do anything.

I live on the second floor of a rowhome, and pay a lot for a decent amount of space. Unfortunately, I can’t use or enjoy any of it because the heater can’t get over 60F when it’s cold outside, and costs $25+ a day to run, or $750 a month. So I leave it off and live in a ski jacket with a beanie and multiple blankets. Fortunately, it has been unseasonably warm this winter, but if it gets colder, I will actually have to leave even with the heat on... This weekend is going to be too cold to stay here.
On 12/24 I had the heat running full time trying to maintain a modest 60F. It fell to 58 anyway. I was under a Sherpa blanket, two duvets, multiple other blankets, and had two pairs of wool socks on with a heated blanket around them. My feet still went numb and lost circulation (I have Raynaud's syndrome). This is what my hands look like even in bed under covers.
My heater will run nonstop when set to 60 if it’s 45 out, which costs $25+ a day. If it’s a cold month, like 20F, running the heat will cost $750 to maybe maintain 60F.
I looked into it, and Maryland requires heating in rental units to be able to maintain 65F out if it’s over 10F outside. Mine does not, the effect of this deficiency is unreasonable utility costs and and the inability to use or live in my apartment.
I called BGE and the representative said that my floor had annual electric bills double that of the other floors, looking at multiple years. They honestly seemed dumbstruck looking at my costs but could only give generalizations due to privacy laws. Summer month utilities were similar, so the discrepancy seems to be based on this inefficient and ineffective heater since the annual electric cost difference occurs during the winter. But this is not a new issue as it can be seen looking back over multiple years.
This seems more than unfair. I can’t use the space I pay so much for. I will go broke trying to run the heat and it still won’t reach comfortable temperatures.
I am ready to call the city and code enforcement, but if I can just get some money back and reduced rent until I leave, that would be great. I paid for a habitable unit and they failed to deliver. I am ready to compromise, but here are the things I want:
I need help understanding what is fair and reasonable to ask. The above is my wishlist and I will compromise on some if needed. Letting me out of my lease early is a bare minimum and it will take time to find a new place and cost money to move, so I want more than that. I need more than that.
I have lofted ceilings with heat vents 12’ in the air and 8’ windows. Getting the heating up to code will be prohibitively expensive. I am hopping that the property management will realize this and decide it’s cheaper to pay me to go away quietly.

My offer on a home recently got accepted and the inspection has been completed. Nothing major come up but I have two questions as I know FL insurance can be more complicated than normal. (HVAC and roof both 1 year old)
  1. Progressive (auto insurer for 10 years) doesn’t provide any coverage in the area, is it worth dropping them to do a bundled home and auto?
  2. Our water heater would be 16 years old at move in, this apparently is grounds for complete non coverage from our realtors word, but wanted to check if this was truly the case.

I'm 45 and have been single for over 2 years now. I've been trying for along time to meet someone and haven't even gotten a date. When I do meet someone they always want me as a best friend and nothing more and as much it hurts always be that friend they want and need. I truly want to find someone to love, hold, wake up to every morning and kiss every night before bed. Im not ugly but I'm not no pretty boy either. I would give anything to give her a family life atmosphere here like she had at her mother's. Im just a plain Jane kinda guy I wear rock n roll and tie dye t shirts and blue jeans.i wear glasses have long hair and no teeth. I have several professional tattoos. 2 dogs and 2 cats. I use to like going to concerts, seasonal festivals, garage sales and flea markets, sitting by a fire and occasionally having a drink but haven't done anything like that in a couple years. I listen to all types of music from Tyler Childers, Zac Bryan, the Dead south Tom petty Metallica and more. I watch all generes of movies, never watch sports or pay att6to politics. I don't need no new fancy car just a good beater with a heater. I good home cooked meal would be so great. Compared to the same ole simple hamburgers, pizza and spaghetti I can make. I have very few friends that I hangout with. I'm not one to start a conversation or make alot of small talk. I'm more if you include me in a conversation I give short n sweet answers and details. I'm very loyal honest and trustworthy. I never judge or expect people to change to please someone else. I just want someone to happy and content with make memories and grow old with. Hello all. I have a pretty severe allergy to dust mites/dog hair. The room I’m in now was filled with it so I’ve been doing my best to clean. Been having some issues especially with my face breaking out in rash when I sleep.
I’m looking for a good true hepa filter vacuum but one that isn’t crazy expensive. Would only need it for the one room which is hardwood floors/baseboard heaters.

If one had to find a silver lining of the aftermath of the Battle of Earth it was that space colonization efforts had exploded; whether it was to create a safe heaven from a newer Federation attack or to find resources to feed the growing military industry, all and sundry were rushing to find their slice of the pie among the stars. This however meant that the already anemic Earth's Military was being stretched more than they could afford to give escort to all those intrepid adventurers. The bureaucrats in charge of logistics thought on the matter for a while and they finally decided to make use of and age old source of armed manpower.
The official term was "Private Military Contractor", in practice they were beefed up Security Company and in the eyes of the public they were simply mercenaries, which is why the initiative wasn't publicized much; that was a gross misunderstanding however, mercenaries were by definition illegal and offered no protection by the laws of war, PMCs on the other hand were in a much more favourable condition because they weren't expected to initiate conflicts, only provide security to the expeditions.
That didn't mean however that all PMCs were as reputable, some of the smaller ones, the one under less scrutiny coincidentally, most definitely were always looking for a way to scrounge up some extra money while on a job and UN officials knew it too, but as long as they did a good job and their offenses were minor they were willing to close an eye given Humanity dire situation.
Even so what Jeff and his merry band were doing was definitely straddling the line.
Their current job was escorting a group of prospectors to a system in which the asteroid belt was unusually rich in semi-conductors, something which was appealing to the always famished industry of military drones. They also had a more personal business to attend there, but there was no reason to contemplate further on that, especially while they were undergoing an inspection by a military patrol before being allowed to cross outside of Human space.
The soldier in front of him had just finished checking that everything in their cargo hold matched what their manifest said and was now busy staring in distaste at the patch on his shoulder showing a jackal.
"So you really are mercenaries" he said with contempt.
"I prefer Security Providers myself" Jeff replied mildly.
"Doesn't change that you make money off of war."
"Please, we both know that legally we're not allowed to shoot a single bullet that isn't in self-defense or to protect our clients" he told conciliatory "Besides, technically that's also how you earn your bread."
"I fight for the good of Mankind, you fight to fatten your bank account" the soldier denied venomously.
Great, so he was one of those guys.
"Buddy, look around you, most of the people I work with are all ex-military that switched over when their paycheck stopped putting meals on their tables. Good feelings don't feed a family."
His answer was ignored, but at least the guy stopped antagonizing him and soon enough he was off to his own ship, the routine check having turned up absolutely nothing.
It wasn't until they had been back on the road for almost an hour that someone else started conversation with him.
"I still can't believe those guys were so sloppy" his second in command, Anthony, told him in disbelief.
"Well, I can plenty believe that, only thing in this direction is Venlil space and the brass are more worried about about the other side of the border to put their best and brightest here. Add on top of that days of boredom and repetitive inspections and you get a very sloppy border patrol."
"I still think we got the secret endorsement of some UN spook."
"Anthony, you still think that the flu vaccine is part of a secret project of gene editing" he snarked back at him "But honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if that turned out to be true, given how strained our relationship with the Crocs is I can see them closing an eye or two on what we're doing here."
Getting to the system took another six hours, during which Jeff made sure all the men and women under his command had performed maintenance on their equipment, they weren't expecting trouble with their secret meeting, but it never hurt to be prepared.
While the prospectors set up in a stable orbit under the watchful eyes of a detachment from his company, he and the rest of his guys started patrolling the edge of the belt, secretly looking for the signs their other client had already arrived. I wasn't long before they sighted it, a Venlil hauler floating aimlessly in space. A more inquisitive mind would have questioned its presence so far away from Venlil space or the lack of surface damage that was to be expected by an apparently abandoned starship, but Jeff simply knew it to be their client attempt at disguise.
"Moreau, just like they told us to, open communication, send two burst of static, a request to dock, then wait ten seconds before asking their favourite seasoning. If all goes well they'll answer us back" he asked facing his communication officer.
He did as asked and for several seconds they heard nothing but silence. Then they finally picked up an answer for the supposedly dead vessel.
"Permission granted. Red."
The seemingly nonsensical answer to their second question was what confirmed it truly was their client and not someone who hijacked the ship and tortured them to get the passcode they had agreed on. Their pilot began the arduous process of closing on the drifting hauler and lining up to the maintenance hatch on its side. While his chosen escort had already started putting on the spacesuit necessary to brave the cold void of space, he and two others set to retrieve the cargo they would be selling.
The patrol had done of good job of checking crates for hidden compartments and containers for false walls, but apparently they never even considered that the steel drums stocked in the cargo bay could contain more than just fuel. Taking the lid of the closest one, he looked for the fishing wire hidden along the inner rim of the drum and pulled up until a boxy shape wrapped in plastic emerged from the liquid within.
The three of them repeated the process until they had recovered all of their hidden cargo, which they stacked on what forklift looked like if one of its parent had been a jetpack. Normally that wouldn't have been necessary, but given that their client was keeping as many systems on the ship turned off, that meanti even artificial gravity couldn't be counted on.
Once the airlock had been secured they had to wait inside for the pressure to normalize, since it turned out on the hauler side of it there was no active atmospheric control, meaning over time leaks had lowered the internal pressure to less than standard condition. Trudging along the corridor, making full use of the rarely used magnetic clamps of the suits, Jeff reflected once again on the paranoia being displayed by their client; as far as he was aware the whole ship would appear a dead husk to a casual sensor sweep, and if even half of the countermeasures his client had implied were true, even a more deep analysis would have trouble picking up anything unusual.
Then again, given the nature of the business they were about to conduct, if anything that was simply reasonable caution.
They finally reached the innermost room, some kind of storage room for the ship own supplies, where they found a jury-rigged airlock replacing the door at the end of the corridor. Warily entering it, Jeff noticed how the walls seemed to be sporting about half a foot of additional insulation, probably as much for keeping the room warm without relying on the hauler life support as it was to keep any thermal signature inside from leaking out. Once the inner door finally slid open with a rush of fresh air he found himself face to face for the first time with his client.
Standing huddled around an overworked space heater were four Arxur, three looking less imposing than the average specimen showed on the news and none of them visibly armed, but he knew better than to believe them harmless, especially when the one standing closer to him held themselves with the confidence of someone used to inflict harm on others.
"Well, got to admit you've chosen a rather coosy place for yourself" he joked "Was the whole spy movie routine really necessary?"
"The eyes of the Dominion see much further than one might think" they rumbled in a tone that his translator tentatively marked as... female? Well, it was hard to tell anyway when her voice sounded like she gargled gravel on a daily basis.
"Which of course is very bad for a budding resistance movement looking to overthrow their tyrants such as yourself" Jeff said amiably "What I want to know is why you went through all the trouble of asking for a gun sale over the Human net. Surely it would have been easier to find similar arrangement in the criminal elements of your own species?"
She chuckled sarcastically, something that to him sounded more like a cement mixer about to give up the ghost, before answering him: "There are no criminal in the Dominion. Not unless they're on the Dominion paybook. You'd find the average Arxur abhor the idea of relying on weapons instead of dirtying their claws, guns are exclusively reserved for Hunting Parties, because otherwise attrition loses for each raid would be too high, or guards for high ranking members of the Dominion. No, if we wanted to get our hands on something to level the ground between us and the Betterment's lackeys we had to look somewhere else."
"Which is where I come in" Jeff stated.
"That is still to be seen, we've yet to see the quality of what you have to offer" she told him stonily.
"Well, you're in luck then, we aren't called The Jackals for nothing, one of our specialties is indeed the salvage of military hardware!" he exclaimed in his best salesman impression before gesturing for one of the men carrying the forklift to bring him one of the boxes.
"So allow me to tell you a story, about a century ago, the world had two superpowers vying for control. One of them aimed at building the best everything, the best guns, the best bombers, the best nukes, you name it. The other meanwhile had a different design philosophy, they wanted weapons that could be easily mass-produced, rugged enough to take some abuse and easy enough to fix that anyone could do it. There was one weapon in particular that incapsulate this philosophy, an assault rifle that has been produced by the millions, has endured decades going from hand to hand and in the meantime never stopped killing."
Unwrapping the box he revealed an elongated glass fiber crate, and removing the lid he brought out a weapon iconic to any Human of Earth when they thought of firearms.
"May I present to you, the Kalashnikov patterned assault rifle, or to its friends, the AK. It can fire 650 rounds per minutes at full auto and has an effective range of 500 meters. While I don't recommend it, people fired it after dropping it in mud, snow and water. It's so easy to use that you can teach to and has been taught to children. Even better, courtesy of the Federation we recently came in possession of around a few hundreds of these and enough bullets to take over a Third World Country, along with a couple tons of plastic explosive, a hundred man portable anti-tank rocket launchers, about two dozen mortars and even five heavy machine guns. So, what do you say?"
In Jeff's job one had to always think of business first.
But as he watched the Arxur in front of him imagining all the ways she could use his merchandise to fight a war for freedom, he thought that didn't mean he couldn't feel like an hero sometimes.

I have a 3,000 sf craftsman style home built in 1914, with plaster walls and zero insulation in zone 7b/8a. I plan to rockwool the attic and closed cell flash the floors. My Average room size is 250sf. With an 8’ ceiling that’s just over 2k cubic feet, (which I assume is what seer sf calculations are set to?), but 12’ ceilings add an additional 1k cf, which I am sure impacts the requirements I want to install 2-4zone mr cools and am concerned that the additional 4’ of ceiling height coupled with uninsulated plaster walls will badly undersize my seer calculations. I also have supplemental propane heaters to help offset the poor heating capabilities of the mr cool brand. Any advice here would be helpful- and before you trash mr cool, I know they aren’t the best, but I can install them myself twice over for what a professional Mitsubishi install would cost.

I believe it helps describe the trancelike passage of time...how Energy and Matter advanced over time...where nothing was in the beginning of time...but even Nothing is Something?
Energy and Matter are two opposing sides...two different faces of the same coin...but they work together to bring about wildly designed creations...let me explain. Although I am one who's interest leans more on the Metaphysical side of things; I can see how truly advanced we have become as a species. - technologically speaking, I mean, just think about it....in The Old Kingdom, or Ancient Egyptian Times where inventions such as the wheel or paper revolutionized society and people were fighting with swords and shields. Communication, verbal or physical otherwise, was purely organic as it only came from our bodies instead of through a medium like a phone or camera. We either traveled on land by foot or on horseback. On the seas were ships that were of simple design. We fought with Swords and Shields. We were creatively limited as compared to today as well. The most intricate workpiece I'd say was the Great Pyramid of Giza which we are still unsure about the construction techniques behind it. Now, this read is going to take a different turn at this point but stay with me. We couldn't manipulate pure energy at all. Fire, which could be considered as a mixture between matter and energy, had been discovered by then. And excuse me for jumping off the timeline but speaking of fire...think about heat as a source. Think about how we can manipulate that aspect of energy (fire) as a temperature source (heating/cooling) in the modern world by combining materials such as metal and electricity (another amazing energy source that I will get to later) and making things such as AC heaters and coolers...the complexity of the pathways we went to over Time in order to design something that can manipulate such energy is insane when you look at the detail of the design...as opposed to the past. I can get very deep about with certain inventions which I will do later. And also, while I am on the subject, I like how heat can be represented physically as fire...and the cold as ice...think about how opposing each of those densities are physically. Picture Fire and Ice in your mind's eye...It's the amazing qualities of Energy and Matter and this is what best describes this pair. Energy is much less dense or physically transparent while Matter is much more dense and physically non-transparent. Yet, somehow two these characteristics to be manipulated into fantastical ways. Fire also gives off light...another dense Energy aspect...whereas Ice does not. I think that's cool - no pun intended. OK, sorry for getting off topic...back to the TimeLine. Let us jump to the 19th century where we can talk about another incredible energy aspect and its inventions - Electricity - because that is where things start getting more interesting to me. Electricity is a flowing type of energy that is found in nature not only in lightning but also in our bodies helping our nervous system. The ways that artificial matter or technology works in order to mimic or imitate the properties of the natural energetic elements of existence is just astounding to me. You could see a light bulb as a technology that uses matter such as glass and wirings of different elements to produce or mimic light and I could go on and on about how the design of a battery - which uses chemical energy, (Also an artificial energy source as opposed to the natural ones talked about above, which has the potential to be very complex) can change this unnatural energy into natural-like electricity. That word is emboldened because that is just the thing. Matter can only imitate, manipulate, and/or expound upon what we see Natural energy does in existence, but it can never be Energy itself. We examine lightning or electricity in existence...and we are able to create technology that manipulates the qualities of that energy in so many different spectacular ways. All within grand design when you really think about it. But we cannot create pure lightning or electricity without Matter (Technology) being there. Same thing with Fire or Air or Water or Earth. All four base elements. Think about how tiny a battery can be. The ingenuity behind its design...its inner workings (small or complex) and its output potential are really something to behold. Here's something trippy to ponder on. I truly believe that things get really, really insane when you think about frequencies, numbers and letters (math or coding), and LCD (liquid crystals) and combine them for Digital tech. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Think about frequencies, vibrations, and waves. Atoms are constantly vibrating, and atoms exist in all matter. This means everything is giving off a energy due to these almost invisible pieces of matter. These mediums carry all other energy aspects such as sound or light. The frequency energy aspect has one superior quality that relates to its invisibility....wirelessness. Through crazy technology we are able to do what was once unimaginable. It is more intriguing than a cordless remote changing the channel on you TV. Today, we are able to manipulate these aspects in crazy ways like sharing a video on Youtube or sending a text message. This may not seem that wild at a glance, but like I said you have to look deeper. It is unreal how all of these things work. Now I am one who believes that numbers mathematics for lack of a better term is neither natural nor artificial. Numbers and the alphabet are an invention this is true, but existence has and always will work by mathematics. An example of this is calculating the speed or force of a moving object. We are using artificial numbers to describe and explain a naturally occurring action. In computers coding is super intricate and multi-layered. The most intricate workpiece I'd say was the Great Pyramid of Giza which we are still unsure about the construction techniques behind it. Now, this read is going to take a different turn at this point but stay with me. We couldn't manipulate pure energy at all. Fire, which could be considered as a mixture between matter and energy, had been discovered by then. And excuse me for jumping off the timeline but speaking of fire...think about heat as a source. Chapter 9
I found myself deep in the cool reaches of my hull counting the ammunition supply. We had been run ragged, dashing up and down the coast for months now. Making matters worse some of our prey had required some more persuasion. We had finally caught our breath after a much-needed rest, and for the first time in weeks, we were taking stock of our supplies. Rangitaiki was covering our food, laundry, and other ‘lighter’ supplies that she better understood. I took stock of fuel, ammunition, and spare parts, objects I understood much better. I now found myself in an interesting conundrum.
I was on my third count of my ammunition for my 4.7-inch guns. Over the past few months, I had recorded every shell fired, and their reason in my logbook. Now instead of 987 shells, mainly expended practicing gunnery, I had a full 1200. Which should be impossible. I had taken a brief glance last week and I was definitely missing some, but as I didn’t count I had no idea how many. Now I somehow had a full complement. I laid down on my back keeping my legs crossed on the floor and thought. Staring at the ceiling in between boxes of powder and rounds.
I didn’t really have a good explanation. I had no real theories, well nothing that sounded solid and plausible. First, I miscounted how many shells I had fired. Second someone was sneaking shells onboard. The problem was I didn’t miscount, and having seen this world I doubted that anyone could make the shell. Furthermore, if someone could the chances of them finding us and getting aboard were so small it wasn’t even worth considering. I already knew I was something of an anomaly but that didn’t explain how I had somehow regained 213 shells.
Unable to come up with an answer I righted myself and stood up. I should run through the AA guns, though I had only used under 10 rounds of 40mm when we had rescued the Rickjin’s crew. I quickly checked the interior ammo, moving through the enclosed cave-like rooms, before returning to the deck. I waved to Rangitaiki, as we crossed paths near the radio room on my way outside.
“Anything we’re critically short on?” I asked, hoping to distract myself from my mysterious gain of shells.
“No, though maybe we should get some more clothes, as really despite how cool your laundry facilities are, we just don’t have much” I couldn’t help but agree as the basket in her hands was only halfway full. That was including everything we weren’t wearing, though not all the sheets and blankets aboard.
“Hmmm,” I really didn’t need many I had enough of my own outfit in the captain's main cabin. However, I doubted that Rangitaiki would be fine with so few outfits. “Let's finish this and make a plan for tomorrow” she nodded at that and we passed each other.
I opened the door and stepped out onto the main deck. I lowered my hood, and let the breeze blow through my hair. The sun was warm and nice on my skin, having just returned from the metal-encased magazines below the waterline. I stretched my arms, leaning against the railing just outside the door. Small waves and bird calls, meet my eyes and ears as I looked out across the water. I hoped that the next bounty would come soon, to maximize the great weather.
The first target was the 40mm ready-use ammunition. I wasn’t sure how it loaded itself, but when I wasn’t in combat or on edge the ammo could be found in this locker. standing up straight I headed down the gangway and amidships, where the 40mm gun was located. I ducked below the small boats and grasped the ladder. clambering up the sound of birds. I quickly opened the lockers and brushed my hair out of the way. I considered putting my hood up again but decided I’d get too warm. I sat down and started to lazily count the ammunition, letting my mind wander a bit. I couldn't help but reminisce about the different AA guns I’d had. An unfortunate necessity, as my duel purpose 4.7 in guns hadn’t been duel purpose enough. I did miss my … my thought process stopped at I realized what my count for rounds was.
I slowly looked down at the clipped rounds laying on the ground around me. Visually confirming what I had felt. A check on my logbook confirmed what I had counted. I had all of the rounds in the locker. I had fired roughly 10 rounds helping the Rickjin. Sitting in front of me was a full locker. Except I had a full magazine in my hull. I quickly stood up and bolted down to the deck, racing forward and back into the superstructure. I bolted up the gangways, and past the fire control room, onto the exterior gun position. I approached the 20mm guns and tore open the lockers. Just to see if they had full ammunition. Quickly counting, and rounding the superstructure to the second forward gun repeating the same hurried process.
That completed I reentered the superstructure and made my way to the main deck again, and aft. I rapidly passed the boats and 40mm position and approached the searchlight tower, where the last two light 20mm guns were. I hurled myself up the first ladder to the first gun. quickly opening the locker and counting as fast as I could. I paused once I had the numbers, before hurriedly, descending to the main deck again. Sliding between the searchlight tower and the aft torpedo tubes, I grasped the second ladder. I launched myself up and to the last ready-use locker. Within seconds I had my answer, and i couldn’t help but shudder.
They were full. No rounds were missing. While I have never fired my 20mms, I was hoping that some of the rounds might be missing to make up for the lack of the 40mm rounds. I stumbled back away from the locker and leaned against the rail, looking up past the searchlight. I had no idea what was going on, or what to make of it. Did this mean I had endless ammunition? Was there a limit? What else did this apply to? Though I already knew it did not apply to food, toiletries, or laundry detergent. My face crinkled up the more I thought about this, and how I didn’t understand what was happening.
I remained there for a time, letting the rocking and bird calls soothe me. I closed my eyes, and I threw my weight forward, and recovered from leaning. I put the rounds up I had pulled out, slowly making my way back past the torpedoes, to the other searchlight tower-mounted 20mm gun. I climbed up and slowly started putting the rounds up. counting them again just to do something, rather than think about what this could mean. Once I closed the locker I pulled my logbook out and leaned against the rail. I opened it and held my pencil ready to note the ammunition for the ready use in the aft guns. Only a few scrawled words in I thought I heard something. I scanned the horizon and noticed a sail.
I stored my logbook and took another look. As the boat got closer I recognized it. It was Earnest’s sailcraft. It was a small one-masted boat that he owned. I had seen him primarily take it out for weekend trips. I Waved at it and made my way to the main deck. It looked like it was Ernest and his daughters Eliza and Floria. I grabbed the cargo nets that were permanently ready and threw it over the side.
“Hey, whit ur ye doing oot here? It's rather unusual to see ye!” I called out as they approached. When we weren’t dashing up and down the coast, we were anchored behind the first island that we had many months back when we had first arrived in Torvica. as such if you knew where we were, it wasn’t hard to find out, though anyone heading into the harbor could see us easily if they approached from the right direction.
“Looking for you” came the reply. Earnest carefully watched, poised to move, as his two daughters climbed aboard.
“Oh? whit, cuid we h’ve done to attract attention?” I replied helping Eliza and Floria down to the deck from the railing. With them over, Earnest made sure his boat was fully secured, before coming up.
“Well” Earnest started, grasping the cargo nets. “I’m not quite sure how to breach the subject” he added. That was unusual, more so than him seeking us out.
“How aboot ye go forward?” I knelt and suggested to Eliza and Floria. I got a feeling that this might be a heavy subject. they nodded and ran forward laughing.
“Good call,” Earnest told me, swinging over the railing. neither he nor I wanted to start, so a tense silence started. with faint laughing from the bow drifting to us as we stood. “I’m afraid I have bad news” Earnest finally started. I didn’t like the sound of that, I tensed expecting to hear a bad update on one of the ships or people we had captured.
“The navy is coming for you. … I don’t know how or where, but somehow the government heard about you, and they want your ship.” That was all I heard.
shit, Shit, ShiT, SHIT. I had no steam built up at all! I couldn’t pull the anchors or I might drift onto the island or rocks. I was a sitting duck, I literally was trapped until I could get steam up. But how close were they? Could they just be around the island? Just out of sight? I started the breathe faster rapidly looking around. We had to get away, I wasn’t going to be the first Royal Navy ship in hundreds of years to be boarded and captured, nor did I want to drag Rangitaiki into this. I tried to run calculations in my head on how long it would take to raise enough steam to get underway. At the same time, I was feeling overwhelmed, all the battles I had fought and this was so different I could quite focus.
“Javelin, Javelin!” I heard Earnest yelling “Eliza, Floria! find Rangitaiki!” that was enough to start and breakthrough. I suddenly realized I was on my knees, and looked up. Earnest was anxiously hovering over me, hands awkwardly in the air.
“i-its-its okay” I managed to utter unsteadily rising, “Ye jus’ caught me off guard” I was now feeling much more focused. I didn’t know how close they were but I quickly started my engines and began to build up steam. I still didn’t have radar or ASDIC up, though the island would hamper it, up so I could only rely on my eyes. “Cuid ye repeat, some of ‘at?” I needed to make sure I hadn’t missed anything.
“JAVELIN!” before he could, I heard someone shout my name. we turned and saw that it was Rangitaiki. she had just come through the door and was racing towards us. “Are you okay? What's wrong?” she asked pulling me into a hug.
“I’m fine, better really” I coked out.
“Oh that’s a relief, what happened?” she asked again.
“The navy is coming for you two” Earnest replied, “they want to capture you to figure out how the ship works, you need to escape” Rangintiki tensed, and somehow managed to hug me harder.
“How soon?” she asked. I cursed myself for not asking that sooner.
“I don’t know, but we got the message yesterday. I know they are bringing in La Galissière to assist, so it could be weeks, or it could be days.” He answered. I didn’t recognize the name, and from the looks of it, neither did Rangitaiki. However, the fact the name was mentioned had to be a major ship in the fleet. However, this meant that we had some time to get ready. I loosened up at that, properly breathing again.
“‘at’s good, we have time then” I looked at Rangitaiki “I don’t think ‘at we will h’ve time to spare now to run ashore”
“Are you sure” It sounds like we have some time? I could run out now and get some things” I shook my head at that suggestion.
“Nae, I-we will be ready to steam in an hour, and if they ur coming fo’ us it's best we head oot soon to put th’ most distance between us an’ them” I told her. I quickly thought over some convoys and operations I had been a part of. Sadly none of them would help us in this situation. She reluctantly nodded, also letting go.
“Then we need to make sure we will be ready to sail” Rangitaiki replied “I’ll head up and get things stowed.” I nodded
“I’ll stow the deck objects,” I told her, starting forward to pack the ready-use lockers again.
“Javelin” I looked back hearing Earnest call my name. “Could you let us stay a little, I want Eliza and Flora to have one last time aboard?” I nodded at that, I didn’t know if we would come up here again, and I wanted to give them some happy memories.
“Ye have half n’ hour, we don’t want someone to put two and two together” He smiled and called his daughter's names. I rushed into my superstructure, and things started to blur. I quickly put the ammunition up in the three guns I hadn’t made it to yet. I ran several smaller things around for Rangitaiki. As steam built up my systems came online. I felt much better knowing that I was not fully defenseless now. soon it was time for Earnest and his daughters to leave, and both Rangitaiki and I saw them off. we stood and watched as his boat caught the wind and sailed off, all three of them waving at us.
“We need to discuss our course of action, and where we want to head,” Rangitaiki told me. I agreed with that thought, I for one did not want to wander aimlessly around a large ocean again.
“Let’s head up to the chart room then,” I told her “Wait! i need to check something, I’ll be real quick” With that, I raced aft and headed below to the hot engine room. I hadn’t gotten a chance to check to make sure it was fully working earlier due to the ammunition problem. A quick examination told me everything was in place and in working order. I just hoped that no engine problems would develop, as I expected this to be quite the dash. However, the main object was I wanted to check my fuel reserves. I hadn’t brought it up to Rangitaiki, but I was concerned bout fuel due to all the scampering we had done seeking bounties. I was expecting about a third or fourth left in the tanks. I held my breath as I checked the gauges.
It was full. I couldn’t believe that! Between the escape from the island and the bounty hunting, there was no way that the tank would be full. I had even turned the engine off for the couple of days we were here beforehand, just to make sure to save fuel. I shook my head, I didn’t understand what was going on. First the full ammunition load, now a full tank. I wanted to think more on it, but I could feel a good amount of steam being built up and knew I need to make a plan with Rangitaiki. So instead I noted this in my logbook and clambered back out onto the deck.
I wasn’t even panting when I entered the map room, despite my hard running. I quickly shook my head again to focus back on the main objective. There were just too many weird things going on.
“I’m here” I told her. she nodded in reply not looking up from the charts we had obtained in Torvica.
“Do you have an idea of what you would like to do?” she asked. I thought about that, I had heard rumors of things. Metal sea beasts that rapidly appeared and then left. New flying machines that made a buzzing sound, yet could not be replicated.
“Aye, I wuid lek to chase some of these rumors. They sound lek me, if ye didn’t know whit I wis.” she nodded at that as if expecting that answer.
“I agree, but that's a vague plan, where do you want to go, is the important part.” I approached the table and saw that she was looking at the world map. Her fingers traced possible routes to countries I didn’t know, lands that were vast.
“Here” I pointed at the ocean roughly analogous with the Atlantic ocean I knew. “I’ve heard some stronger rumors about the other side of the continent. and well. It's the closes thing to home I can call an ocean.” I elaborated, hoping she would agree with my reasoning. “Plus I don’t want to wander in the ocean we jus’ escaped from.” she laughed at that.
“I agree, so south it is!”
“Aye, I figure we run oot away from th' coast for a couple days then coast the rest of the way. Th’t way we can better navigate quickly.”
“Well perhaps only coast every couple of days, I am a navigator after all, we don’t need to constantly be in sight of land.”
“Even the best navigator can make mistakes. but, let's get underway first, and decide the finer details later” She nodded in ascension, and pulled her tools out, rapidly making a course for us to follow. I left her to it and, grabbing my javelin from where I had left it, headed up to the bridge. The wind had picked up a little with a chill in it and far to the west clouds were gathering. I pulled my hood up and looked south, making sure our path was clear. letting the wind and gentle rocking absorb me.
“We’re good to go!” my stupor was broken, by Rangitaiki’s appearance.
“Good, let's get underway!” I now had enough steam built up that we could leave. I raised the anchors and advanced the throttle. slowly my hull inched forward, carefully avoiding the rocks to my port side. Once we were clear I increased speed and made my way over to Rangitaiki. “So which way souid I head us?” I asked her
“We’re fine for now, I’ll let you know when to break south” she replied, hair waving in the wind. A smile spread across her face, “You know I love when we’re just heading out. It feels like a brand new adventure is coming. not just the simple thrill of sailing, but the fact I get to sail with you”
“Ye okay?, ye’r sounding like a sommant out of a novel,” I asked, hoping she wasn’t having second thoughts.
“No, just it feels weird to be leaving Torvica. well, that and the new does frighten me, I’m not ready to stop exploring with you javelin.” Came her reply. I could understand that. I looked forward and noticed something. despite the prevailing wind, there was a familiar sailboat ahead of us. “Is that?” I asked. Rangitaiki quickly had her binoculars, which she must have grabbed before heading up here, and looked.
“It is! they must have wanted to send us off!”
“Well, that heartening!” I waved at them as we passed, my hull gaining speed and leaving them behind. Soon I looked forward, shielding my eyes from the midafternoon sun. Looking forward to what awaited us to the south. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I had a hard time finding the actual AA positions on Javelin for the condition her hull was in, and that made this chapter hard to write. To directly note, the 4.7-inch guns on the Tribal, J, K, and N classes were dual purpose (capable of Anti-air and Anti surface use) but the mounting type on the ship, limited the elevation of the guns, making them poor at close in AA use. Which is still better than the Germans who never made a dual propose Anti-air and anti-surface weapon.

Hi guys, we are in the UK (coastal location) and are on the market for a 4-6 persons outdoor sauna for our own use as well as our little holiday let business. We want one out of Cedar (as pine as very little lifetime expectancy where we live) and probably electric heater for ease and cost (wood is expensive here). But we debating between Barrel vs rectangular shape. So far we have seen these 2 options that we like:
The rectangular is fabricated in Canada from 50mm cedar and has harvia 6kw heater but is almost £14k. The barrel one is fabricated in Netherland from 40mm cedar with a Finnleo heater and is £6.5k so significantly lower.
Opinions, experience? Any other options out there that we missed?

Forced Upgrade: Sidewinder X2 Manta M4P+CB1 (long read)
Background: The upgrade was forced in the sense that I blew up my main board when I hot plugged the ribbon cable into the extruder and likely shorted the 24V supply to the 5V on the extruder. As a result it blew up every 5V bit on the extruder (BLTouch) and in the path on the way (x-end stop). Additionally, it fried the MOSFETs on the mainbboard that drive the heaters. They failed in such a way that the heaters were always on 100%, so there was smoke coming off the hot end.
Options: I always wanted to run Klipper but since the Raspberry Pi is essentially unobtainium, I started looking at the BTT Manta M4P + CB1. I needed a main board anyway and this option gets me about the equivalent of a Raspberry Pi 3B with it for about the same price as a main board and a Pi3B (under normal market conditions).
Reconstruction: Taking the stuff apart was easy and I made sure to label all of the connectors as I unplugged them. Some are obvious like the x-stepper and the x-endstop since they are red plugs 4-pins and 3-pins respectively, others not so much. This pinout was helpful in identifying what was what.
I then decided on the best location and orientation for mounting keeping in mind that some of the cables coming from the left gantry are on the short side and that there is a case cooling fan right in the middle of the bay. I was able to choose a location that allowed me to mount the board such that the case fan was directly over the CB1 module and the cables from the left gantry would still reach.
I mounted the board with 4 standoffs and M2 bolts/nuts, with three holes being drilled through the top of the case to secure it. The fourth, I could only use a standoff to support the board as it would have been necessary to disassemble the y-axis rails to drill through the case. Also, BTT has a printable mount for the board, but since my printer was down it was a no go for me.

I got busy plugging in stuff using the pinout diagrams in the Users Manual. I used the e-endstop plug for the filament sensor and had to make an extension cable so that it could reach. The only other adapter I had to make was for the BLTouch as it goes from a 4 pin on the Ruby board to a 5 pin on the Manta. Even still only the 2 wires were required to be connected.

Two cables that I left unconnected were the UART (connection between the main board and the touch screen TFT) and the LED [gnd, red, green, blue] connector. Frankly, I don't even know where that LED is because the one on the extruder is a neopixel and it does not need those connections. Maybe in the future I will find a way to make use of the stock TFT display through the UART.
Klipper: Klipper was pretty easy to setup by following the instruction in the Users Manual. I used the basic printer config from the Klipper site and adapted it for the pins and stepper directions for the manta board.
Impressions: I love it and it prints great without any tweaks to the extruder settings (other than pin and direction). I have printed with .4mm and .6mm nozzles from both Prusa and Cura slicers and it works flawlessly. I do miss the Touchscreen a little bit, but in all honesty it was pretty flaky to begin with.
What I learned: I learned a lot during this project about the Sidewinder X2 printer and what I personally think are some of its shortcomings as well as some things i like:
  1. Do not ever hot-plug anything on this printer. Always turn power off if you are going to tinker with something. There are virtually no protections for the circuitry.
  2. I have a love hate relationship with the flat ribbon cables. I love the asthetics and the simplicity of them. They are, however, not designed to be tinkered with. During the process of troubleshooting issues I must have plugged and unplugged the extruder cable a few dozen times. When all was put back together I found that either the BLTouch would not work or my heater on the hot end would not work. I replaced the cable with spare included with the printer and it is perfect.
  3. There parts on this printer that are literally chinese junk and you should have backups for each: x/y-endstops (have circuirty for what should be a simple contact switch), BLTouch (everyone knows the issues here), the ribbon cables (see above), Filament sensor is total garbage (false positives stopping my prints) and in Klipper I just disabled it.
  4. If something on this printer is making loud noises it is likely some loose part or plastic part resonating from the motor vibrations. I found parts on a factory fresh extruder that were loose and making a horrid noise during retraction. I tightened everything up all I here now is the fan(s).
  5. Heat breaks with PTFE near the heater block are total crap. They will jam and cause you all kinds of anxiety. Spend a few $$ on all metal heat break and save yourself some heartache.
I really think this is a great printer. For beginners, the stock version will be great until they get a clog in the PTFE heat break then all bets are off. I am getting used to Klipper but it is growing on me.

From the searing heat of the Trisk plantations, to the choked and barely breathable atmosphere of orbital narcotic processing stations, a whisper spread like the shadow of a tree at sunset. The first to speak it were those who saw with their own eyes, both taskmasters and slaves, the coming of something that threatened to undo the way things had been for millennia. The hushed words, when spoken, had the power to sow fear in the enslavers.
At first, none knew what to make of any of it. When the workers saw the change in their overlords as they told one another of what was to them a dark tale of woe, most feared what it may mean for them. Their lives were hard enough without something from the outside coming in and disrupting what little peace they might be able to steal and hide away. What if the new threat, whatever it was, made things worse? Such are the thoughts of the desperate and downtrodden.
A few, however, saw in these murmured tales motes of something so unknown to them that though their hearts felt it, their minds could not lay hold of it. In the despair of the existence wherein lived all slaves to the Jergoon, a small light began to push back against the shroud of bleak depression.
They felt hope.
For some of the older slave species, the very concept of hope was lost to deep antiquity. The lucky races that had only been enslaved for a handful of centuries still occasionally had glimmers of understanding that life under the Jergoon was not all that could or did exist.
In the quiet and out of the way places where guards spoke and thought they were alone, they told of a lone white ship and its terrible weapons of destruction. Through vents and around corners, slaves eavesdropped and heard of a single vessel so mighty that the vast Home Fleet of their clan was reduced by one warship out of every three.
The hearing of the words, and the seeing of the fear, caused new life to flow into the atrophied souls that previously lacked the strength to believe in something better.
The news spread far and wide, and soon many subservient species were recalling stories passed down by their forebearers about avenging beings sent by the gods to impose justice. Many such tales were lost to time due to being dismissed for the lack of evidence. Now, the slaves began to wonder if there was truth in the remaining old songs, chants, and stories.

In one of the most far out plantation worlds of the Trisklassa Syndicate, some were about to be given greater evidence than mere whispered stories.
Bob sat eyeing the controls of the shuttle as the rhythm of a particularly nasal snore invaded the cockpit from the cargo bay aft. He took it as a compliment that his recent set of course corrections hadn’t perturbed the pattern of breathing in the slightest.
The image of one of the Sisters appeared on the dash, dimmer than usual to accommodate the day-night cycle of the extended mission they were presently on.
“Bob, you really should get some rest. I can handle the ship for a few hours.”
He waved his antennae slowly from side to side and said, “Oh, I trust you could do it perfectly well. I just find it peaceful at this time of night is all. I want to enjoy the sight of a new blanket of stars for a bit.”
“I don’t understand you,” she said, the little holographic antennae twitching in confusion.
“In what way?” Bob responded.
“How can you be relaxing and enjoying the scenery at a time like this?”
“Well,” Bob sighed, “My legs are pretty much back to normal other than being a lighter blue than the rest of me, I’m back on active duty, the mission we are on promises to be exciting and rewarding, and the stars are really majestic when you just sit in a darkened room in the quiet and watch.”
The Sister leaned to one side as if to look past Bob and said, “With the Sergeant back there snoring so much I doubt you could call this quiet. Besides, I meant I don’t understand how you can be relaxing in the middle of a mission where at any minute a Jergoon ship could start shooting at us.”
Bob’s head tilted down as he examined the displays, “Do you have some indication of hidden Jergoon ships stalking us or something?”
“Well, no, but if one were to jump in we would be in a bad place.”
Bob turned his head to face the little projection and asked, “Regarding the snoring, it serves to remind me how much the infiltration team trusts us. I know if I had the same job coming up as they do I wouldn’t be able to sleep. I see it as an ongoing compliment.”
Folding his upper arms across his chest he said, “As for the potential for bad things to happen, let me ask you a few questions.”
“Okay, go ahead,” she agreed.
Bob’s antennae went up in an inquisitive set and he asked, “Say you were implanted into a ship and given a military goal. To reach that objective, you will have to allocate scarce resources like torpedoes and SPL ammo as best you could, but you couldn’t be sure exactly what it will take to finish the mission.”
“That would be awesome!” she exclaimed excitedly.
“Stay with me here, Sister. In this battle, you know that to finish your mission you will have to fight a particular enemy ship. Now, there is also an additional ship you could divert and attack, but it wouldn’t actually get you any closer to the objective, and you would still have to fight the first ship. That second ship would in fact hold no strategic or tactical importance at all. In that circumstance, would you just go for the one ship that led to accomplishing your objective, or would you divert, destroy the second ship, then proceed to attack the first?”
She took no real time considering before she responded, “Well, it wouldn’t make any sense at all to use the resources to attack two ships when attacking one is all you needed to do.”
“Okay,” Bob continued, “Now imagine a very similar situation but in this one you aren’t sure if you will even have to fight the first ship. The second one is still there, and just like before it has no impact on the mission. Would you choose to fight it then?”
“Do I still have to worry about ammo and resources?” she clarified.
“Yup, all that’s the same,” he answered.
“Then I wouldn’t attack the second ship in that case either,” she said, shaking her little holographic head.
Bob waved an arm at the expanse outside and said, “The universe is full of battles that may or may not take place both literally and figuratively. We can do our best to try and be prepared for the unexpected, but that only goes so far. Beyond that, all that we can do is worry about what might be. Worry is that second ship. Whether or not we actually have to fight that first ship, that is what is actually in our future, it never makes sense to engage the second one. All worrying about things can do is use up our mental and emotional resources that may be critical for later.”
“So,” she asked with some hesitation, “You never worry about anything?”
At that, Bob began laughing. Clicks and pops rattled around the cockpit. He tried to control himself so as not to wake the men and women trying to sleep in the cargo bay behind him.
After he regained some semblance of control, he said, “Oh, I wish. No, I definitely worry about things. What makes it hard is that sometimes it’s a real help. Ultimately, it serves to motivate me to prepare for unexpected issues in the future. It’s a skill to learn what I should and shouldn’t be concerned about. In this case though, it’s pretty straight forward. Either the Jergoon will detect our approach to their planet, or they won’t. For this mission, all the worrying and resulting preparation was done by whole teams of analysts, tacticians, and strategists both here in Andromeda and back home. I have the luxury of relaxing now knowing that anything that we run into we will be ready for, or we won’t. In either case, we are as prepared as we can be for either occurrence.”
“And given that’s the case, you may as well enjoy the stars,” she said.
“I may as well enjoy the stars,” he echoed.
They sat there together in contented silence for a time, before the Sister said, “I really think you ought to try and get some sleep, Lieutenant. We still have three days before we get to the planet, and the stars will be there when you wake up.”
“Yeah,” he replied, “I think you are right. Wake me up if anything cool happens.”
“Will do,” she said, before her little projection flickered and disappeared.

The next three days went by fairly slowly. Bob had never been a part of a mission like this before, and he found it terribly exciting. Their mission was to make contact with, infiltrate, and upload a computer virus into an orbital station. It was circling one of the Trisklassa Clan’s most distant production worlds.
The fleet chose this planet because it had some unique factors that Redeemer discovered from the raided Jergoon database. The analysis of the equipment requests from the station indicated it was in a sorry state of disrepair. Multiple calls for critical sensor components were of particular note. The materials requests were often met with a demand from the syndicate quartermasters for verification that the station could still detect FTL transits. When the response came back in the affirmative, the requests were denied.
With this information in hand, the mission planners outlined a drop in behind a fairly small planetoid to be the best avenue for system ingress. Given the distance of the ingress point, it would take them a while to make the trip at sub light speeds under silent running protocols.
In short, it made an ideal location to deploy the malicious code. It would take longer for it to work its way through the Jergoon information networks, but the brass thought a lower risk mission with a little more of a wait was a good trade off given the limited resources the expedition fleet had.
The Sister had the details of exactly what the virus was to do. Bob understood it to be some sort of propaganda aimed at the Jergoon and the slave populations. While the mission itself was intriguing to Bob, the information Red was able to get from the Jergoon database indicated the planet and system were truly fascinating.
The planet, called Torment by the Jergoon, was a terrestrial world tidally locked to the star it orbited. On the day side, the world was an inhospitable desert with massive dunes as far as the eye could see. The only things to break these seas of sand were the jagged mountain ranges and occasional towering volcano. On the night side, continent spanning glaciers locked up nearly all of the water on the planet in a frozen wasteland of white. Trisk was grown in a relatively narrow band of twilight that ran in a belt a scant handful of kilometers wide. It was directly over this band of hospitable land that the station made its polar orbit through the heavens.
For this part of the mission, all they could do was to sit and wait. It would take about a week to make the approach. Based on information provided by Sessk, who was a sensor operator when he worked for the Jergoon, the components that needed replacement would limit the station to only being able to detect ships down to roughly the size of one of the fleet corvettes. This was of course assuming a smaller craft didn’t do anything too energetic during their approach.
So, here they were, a squad of six troops, Bob, and one of the Sisters all loaded into a modified Rescue Corps shuttle. It wasn’t as much cramped as just boring. But, as any professional soldier will be able to tell you, boredom is a more common opponent by far than almost anything else.
To pass the time, Bob and the infiltration team played scores of hands of poker on their slow approach. Eventually, Bob was banned from participating because his calculating mind gave him a demonstrable advantage over the others. With their inability to read his body language, in those times he didn’t have a winning hand he would just bluff and psych out everyone into folding. So great was the advantage his calculating abilities conveyed, that the only reason he was still allowed in the officer’s game back on Redeemer was because Jerome could tell every time he tried to bluff.
Bob took his expulsion with the usual cheerfulness, and took the opportunity to converse with the soldiers not playing the game.
Right after a bout of foul language and disparaging of lineage from the other side of the bay, one of the soldiers stepped over to Bob and sat down. Her name was Specialist Clay.
Bob was working on his combat armor, and it lay in a great array of parts on the floor in front of him.
“Care for some company, Lieutenant?” she asked, presuming upon the seat next to him.
“Any time, Specialist,” Bob quickly replied, reaching own to clear a place for her to extend her legs a bit farther.
“What are you working on here?” she asked, gesturing at the parts.
He bent his head down and looked over the parts, “Well, when I tried it on before we left, I noticed some things weren’t quite fitting the way they should. It’s been that way for a while, and I just figured my legs needing to grow back. Now that they have, the fit still isn’t right and I find it distracts me when I have it on.”
She looked down at the parts and asked, “Is the Krador armor so much more complex that you have to completely break it down to make changes to the fit? This seems a bit excessive if you ask me.”
Bob waved his antennae and admitted, “No, no it’s not. I got a little carried away.”
He looked at the group playing cards, then back to Clay.
Leaning in toward her, he whispered, “I screwed up. I don’t think I will be able to get it all back together again. Can you help me?”
The soldier quirked one eyebrow up, but moments later a smile forced its way onto her expression.
She let out a soft laugh and replied in a hushed tone, “Yeah, sure thing, Sir. I helped a lot of Krador get their armor on back in the war. I’ll get you sorted out and you will be snug as a bug in no time.”
Bob had made a true and glorious mess of things, but despite some minor issues that took some time to overcome, both were glad to have something to occupy their time.
At one point when Bob was working on getting a lower joint on one of his left legs flexing properly, he asked, “So, specialist, any plans for kids in the future?”
She stopped what she was doing and looked up at him, “Are you making a pass at me, Sir? For one, I don’t know how that would work, and also, you are an officer.”
Bob’s antennae shot back and he stammered, “Oh n-no! I didn’t mean to imply, I mean, I would never ask you something like that.”
The card game had gone silent and all eyes were on the two of them now.
Her expression became somewhat hurt and she said, “Why not? Is there something wrong with me? Are you saying I’m not attractive?”
“No, not at all!” was all he could muster.
“I’m not attractive at all?” she asked, standing up and taking a step back.
Bob looked across the faces of the guards, only to find as much help there among their expressionless faces as one would expect from Greco-Roman statuary.
“I,” he stuttered, “I don’t even have reproductive parts.”
Nobody said anything. The humans all bored into him with inscrutable eyes. After what felt like hours to Bob, Clay let out a stifled, half laugh. Almost instantly the entirety of the human squad was laughing hysterically. The sergeant was slapping his knee, and one of the other specialists at the table was laughing so hard he started to cough.
“Lieutenant,” she finally spoke, “I’m sorry. I was messing with you. I knew what you meant.”
Between fits of laughter, the Sergeant offered, “She does that to everybody at some point, Sir. I gotta’ say though, Clay, you got some stones pulling that crap on a Krador, and an officer at that.”
Through all of this, Bob had remained calm and still.
When it had quieted down, he snapped out, “Attention!”
The six of them immediately rose and went rigid. Bob stood there looking at them with expressionless insectoid eyes as the only remaining sounds that remained were the air circulation and engine systems.
He walked slowly over to the table and asked, “Sergeant, is it my understanding that you tolerate insubordination in your squad?”
The man gulped and answered, “No, Sir.”
Bob walked back to Specialist Clay and asked, “And do you think it is amusing to sexually harass a superior officer, Specialist?”
Her expression broke, with her eyebrows rising slightly in an expression of concern as she said, “Sir, it was not my intention to-”
“Oh yes it was,” Bob cut her off, “Don’t dig the hole deeper by lying to me, Clay.”
“Yes, Sir,” was all she could get out.
Bob took a few steps toward the cockpit and said, “I suppose the next step would be to submit all of your names to Admiral Connolly for formal reprimand at this point. Is that your understanding as well, Sergeant?”
The man’s face grew grim at the prospect and he replied, “I believe there is sufficient cause for such actions in this case, Sir.”
Bob turned around to face the cockpit. He crossed his two lower arms in front of him and brought up his upper hands to steeple them in front of his face. He stayed like that for a time, then nodded once and turned back to face them all.
He approached the Specialist and raised his head to be closer to the level of hers, staring into her still clearly concerned face.
In a flash, his antennae went back and his eyelids narrowed over his eyes and he said, “I’m just messing with you guys. You really got me good on that one. At ease guys, it’s all good.”
In one collective exhale, all the humans blew out a breath and seemed to wilt somewhat. Bob, on the other hand, had already begun clicking and popping with mirth. It was then that the squad learned again not to bet against Bob, because chances are you aren’t actually holding all the cards you think you are.
After a little while, he mentioned to the Sergeant privately, “You know, you and your people can get in trouble for that if there was an officer with a bit more of a stick up their abdomen. I know soldiers will be soldiers, and in tense situations you have to find means of levity where you can, but more than a few of my instructors back at the academy would have had all of you guys reprimanded.”
He looked down and nodded, “Understood, Sir. It won’t happen again. I’ll see to it.”
With that out of the way, Bob approached Clay. She was busy oiling one of the joints of her armor.
He said, “You never answered my question from before. Do you think you will ever want to have kids?”
She smiled a little and said, “I don’t know. It seems like a lot of work to find someone I actually want to get in a relationship with, let alone reproduce with. The Military is my life right now. Why do you ask?”
Bob had a slight twitch in his antennae before he said, “Well, the queens back home are concerned about the losses in the war and the dispersion of so many humans among council planets. In our opinion, the universe needs more of you around.”
Her eyes went a little wider and she looked up from the armor, “Wait, you guys want us to breed more?”
At this, the others at the table had turned and were listening with genuine interest. It was rare to get an insight into the Krador mindset beyond the obvious surface level issues for most.
“Well,” Bob said, “In a word, yes. The queens are uncomfortable with your low fertility rates and overall ability to quickly bring up your numbers. With the queens being concerned, so is all of your Krador family concerned.”
She looked at him and said, “Awkward.”
No sooner had the word left her mouth than the Sister called out, “Lieutenant, we are getting good images of the station now. Did you want me to put them up on the screen back there?”
“Yeah, go ahead,” Bob replied.
The holoprojector in the bay lit up with a simple two dimensional, grainy image of the station. Even with this low resolution, it was clearly in a state of significant disrepair.
It didn’t take long before the team was going about the business of identifying the most likely areas of access, the primary station components, or the other multitudinous considerations they needed to plan for. Bob made his way back to the cockpit to go over the latest gravitational and orbital data.
“Pretty much everything is as we expected,” the Sister reported.
Bob nodded at the readouts and said, “Yup, that it is.”
He began working through some orbital deceleration calculations and said, “I think our best chance at this vector would be to approach the side opposite the current position of the station and make a deceleration burn once we are in the sensor shadow of the planet. We are coming in pretty hot, so we will probably have to drop in to let the atmospheric drag slow us down for most of it though.”
“That seems, um, really dangerous,” the Sister noted.
He bobbed his head to from side to side a little and said, “Nah, it’ll be fun.”

So this, much like my incident with the ghost of the civil war nurse, isn’t going to be some grand epic, it isn’t going to be some ‘and then I saw the ghost’ type thing. I honestly wish it was, as those things make for better retellings, and they’re harder to dispute.
Anyway, for a bit of backstory, I live in a small southern city, with history dating back to the Civil War, the apartment building I call home, and have called home for almost four years now, was built in 1936 to be apartments, instead of existing as a house first only to then be converted into apartments. The walls and floors in this place are tremendously paper thin, as I can hear my downstairs neighbor’s T.V and my downstairs neighbor if she’s talking loud enough. There’s squirrels in the walls that I can hear scrabbling from time to time, and I can hear every time the front door opens and shuts, generally because people slam it.
I say all that to say, yes, I know there’s rational, logical explanations for all sorts of things. I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for the heavy footsteps I sometimes hear in my downstairs neighbor’s apartment, which sounds like she puts on her heaviest pair of hiking boots (which I would be surprised if she owns) and paces, doing her best to stomp heavily with every step. I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for the knocking I’ll hear sometimes on the bathroom wall, which sounds very much like my other neighbor is rapping his knuckles against his side of the wall. I’m even sure there’s a logical explanation for the shadow of the arm I’m sure I saw in my dark kitchen once and only once back in 2020, staring at it as I was from the living room.. I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for any and all little creepy things that have happened while I’ve lived here.
I can find no explanation for this next part.
This was about a week ago. I was about to go to sleep, sitting on the couch (I sleep on my couch because the living room is the only room I can somewhat climate control, be it through heaters or fans) and playing some solitaire to sort of relax. It was a particularly noisy evening that night, the train was whistling and groaning as it made its way down the tracks, the squirrels were scrabbling in the walls, and I could hear one of my neighbors moving around. In truth I was a little unnerved by all the noise, but then, in the midst of everything else, I hear it.
“Uh-oh.”
It was a small voice, toneless, either a young woman or a child. It wasn’t muffled, didn’t sound like it was coming from a T.V or from one of my neighbors. It sounded like it was coming from the kitchen or my bedroom. I stop, paralyzed, listening, and hear nothing else. Ever since then, I’ve heard nothing else, and have no explanation for it. There’s no grand ghost story attached to this place, the only thing that comes close being a half-remembered story from the old landlord about some little girl going missing here at some point. (Even he hadn’t heard about it himself, had only heard about it from a woman doing research for a ghost walk). It could be nothing, and I probably won’t ever hear anything else, just like the civil war nurse at my college, but I know what I heard, I know what it wasn’t even if I don’t know what it was.
That’s what counts, right?

I could go on and on about how everything here sucks, co workers, managers, how everything in my store is breaking all the time. But the thing that's pissing me off the most, the fucking thermostat. During the summer it was consistently in the 90's, mind you were also working next to like 18 fry vats, heated food tables, food cabinets, grills, pie machine, like everything in this store is hot. What's the best we got? A few days of the A/C running, before we were told we can't run it anymore. Oh but don't worry we can run the heat all day nearly every day when it's already in the 90's. Oh but now it's winter, and consistently in the low 20's to 30's all morning. What do we get? No fucking heater. We had a space heater but the fire marshall deemed it unsafe. Oh but if we get cold there's a communal beanie and fingerless gloves. I shouldn't have to wear snow clothes to stay warm for the half my shift that it's fucking freezing. I shouldn't have to Pay my way to accommodate the situations they out us in because the owners are cheap assholes.

Unless we go on a heater after this all-star break, I think we should keep all our picks at TDL. Not necessarily be a seller (we dont have much to sell), but keep all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round picks. This upcoming draft is stacked. I think we are more than 1-2 trades away from being a contender and it will be an offseason project with a new GM. This upcoming draft is super stacked as well, the 2nd round this year might be better than the first round next year. We are in a tough position and there are no easy answers, but I think the best solution for the future and present is to keep our picks, get a new GM and draft well, then retool this offseason and focus on building back a contender for the 2023-24 season through free agency. That way we restock our prospect pool and have a better short and long term future.

Light streamed into Katie’s window, directly into her closed eyes. She wrapped herself deeper in the covers. She felt vaguely sick, as if she’d had too much to drink the night before, but it was an emotional hangover. She hated conflict, and hadn’t fought with her Venlil friend before last night.
Katie was always careful with what she said about humanity’s customs on camera in front of their alien audience. She was used to the occasional flinch from her roommate when she cleared her throat or laughed too loudly. She was not used to herself being the one to recoil in horror from a cultural difference — if you could even call such a thing as disappearing children a cultural difference!
She groaned and buried her face in her pillow. She’d only been awake for five seconds and her mind was already racing. The Venlil had sided with humanity, at great risk to themselves, ever since first contact. They had empathized with creatures they instinctively viewed as monstrous, and put their entire society on the line to protect humanity, just because they didn’t think Earth deserved extermination.
So how could they possibly not extend that same empathy to children, let alone their own children, who were different? Kids who just needed help?
She plopped her other pillow on top of her head, as if hiding in her bedding could make this go away. Was she supposed to just act normal? Go make breakfast on camera as usual, as if she didn’t know that Vala thought neurodiversity was something that should be destroyed?
Her bladder pleaded that it did not care about her difficulties, only that she got out of bed and emptied it. She swung her feet to the floor and padded softly to the bathroom. Body appeased, she briefly considered a shower but decided the sound of the plumbing would wake her sensitive-eared roommate. She couldn’t face talking to her just yet.
Dressed and hoping caffeine could magically fix all of her problems, she tiptoed down the stairs. Slumped on the couch was Vala. That was strange; she had never slept outside of her room before. Katie stifled a sigh and sneaked her way into the kitchen. She stared at the coffee maker and slowly realized that the whine of the water heater would definitely wake the Venlil on her couch. She grimaced, tossed on a coat and some shoes, and left the house as quietly as she could. A hand-poured latte would make her feel better than the drip from her second-hand machine, anyway.

Vala woke with a start as she heard the front door close. That was odd, she usually couldn’t hear the door latch from her bedroom. She stretched her aching body and was surprised to notice that she wasn’t actually in her bedroom. Why on the ears of Tavsi the Fruitful had she slept on the couch? She pulled something hard out from under her shoulder - her pad. Ah. Right. She’d been researching Predator’s Disease. She had stayed up too late, and must have drifted off. No wonder she felt so stiff.
Katie had been upset with her. Had she left? Just left, without a word? Vala’s ears flattened slowly. Katie had never reacted that strongly, not even when Vala had humiliated her by insisting her boyfriend was a dangerous cannibal.
It was no wonder, really. Vala had expressed some views that she was beginning to think were not reflective of empathy. Her second stomach roiled uncomfortably. She had to do something to fix this.
Vala had been upset by Katie plenty of times, however. It was hard to avoid, with a predator interacting with one of the most nervous species in the known galaxy. Katie had always brought her tea and a snack to make her feel better. Vala could do that!
“Traditional human breakfast recipes,” Vala searched.
Oh, to be shaved in winter, absolutely not. “Traditional PLANT BASED human breakfast recipes,” she tried again.
Much better. Holopad in paw, she trotted to the kitchen to make something Katie would find comforting.

Katie sat on a random stoop and drank her oat milk latte outside. It was freezing, but the cold helped clear her head. She had not imagined she would ever need to explain to Vala that you should care about other people, even if they were different from you — the woman was generally caring to a fault.
Katie’s own society did things she didn’t agree with, too. That didn’t mean that Katie couldn’t adopt a more ethical stance when she learned about them, even if she had once agreed with the societal norm. Vala had apologized to Mike, after all. Maybe just having that positive experience with him would lead her to a more empathetic opinion on neurodivergence in her own society. Or, maybe the Venlil really did think people should be thrown away if they didn’t think like her.
Maybe the chill air wasn’t helping her find a solution at all. She was just thinking in circles. Annoyed, she rose and shook the pins and needles from her frozen legs.
She unlocked her front door to a disaster zone. Splotches of flour and batter coated the counters, the floor, and the Venlil standing in front of her mixer with her tail tucked between her legs.
“What’s all this?” The human woman asked.
“I hurt you last night,” Vala told her softly. “You always make me food when I’m hurt or scared. I wanted to apologize, and make you feel better.”
Katie sighed. “We need to talk.”
Vala’s tail shot out in alarm. She knew from the Earth films she’d seen that “we need to talk” was a phrase humans used before they announced that they never wanted to see someone again. Pancakes would not be enough! She had to tell Katie what she had found out last night and apologize properly before Katie refused to ever talk to her again. She scurried and jumped to make contact with her friend.
“Katie, please, let me explain!”
Katie took a step backwards and sat heavily on the couch. She hadn’t expected the flour-coated Vala to come flying at her in a desperate, powdery leap.
“Okay, Vala. You ready to talk now?”
“Yes, yes,” Vala bleated unhappily. “Katie, I stayed up all night researching Predator’s Disease. I wanted to be able to explain it properly instead of making it worse. You were right, kids are disappearing. I couldn’t find data on treatment plans, success rates, therapies, anything. Just records of asylums and anecdotes on predator attacks. I’m not a scientist but I just kept remembering what Mike said about doubting the accuracy of findings and theories if the research methods weren’t reliable. And the way they wrote about the diseased was just so reminiscent of how the Federation talks about humans, or how Chief Nikonus talked about curing the Krakotl and the Gojids.
“When I was a kid, they taught us the Predator Disease screenings were a good thing, to keep us safe from predators that pretending to be people. My parents said that if I was good, I didn’t need to be afraid of the test. No one ever announced it if someone didn’t pass the test, but some kids left school that time every year, and never came back. My neighbor Hayla left. My parents said she had to go away. But her parents didn’t go, wherever she went. And there weren’t any other kids on our street, so there wasn’t anyone for me to play with anymore. We were eight. She never came back, never. I — “ Vala’s breath hitched on her every word. She tried to keep the tears welling in her eyes from falling; she hated the feeling of the salty moisture in her fur.
Katie had tears in her eyes too. She gently put her hand on Vala’s arm, and listened carefully as Vala took a deep, shuddering breath and went on.
“I don’t know why I’m even telling you about her, I haven’t thought about Hayla in years. I looked at the guidelines for Predator’s Disease, and you were right. Mike would have been taken away if he were Venlil. And I couldn’t find anything on what treatments they do in the asylums, nothing on success rates, or anything other than assurances that people with Predator’s Disease are just monsters who are nothing but a threat. Nothing about learning to overcome challenges like Ashley said, nothing about the sapience of the diseased, or that they deserve empathy too, nothing! Nothing!”
The tears forced their way out of her eyes, and soaked the fur on her cheeks. Katie wrapped her in a warm, strong embrace.
“My — My parents told me. They told me Hayla had to leave for the sake of the herd. She couldn’t— She never used her ears. She never wagged her tail, but she was nice. We played together every day, and then she was gone. My parents told me it was for the best. But… but what if that was a lie? The Cult of Inatala was a lie. The Great Protector was a lie. Entire cultures and genomes were falsified to bolster Kolshian control!
“What if this was a lie, too? My parents said it was necessary. They said it was for the best,” Vala sobbed into Katie’s shoulder. Oh, fruitless harvest! Her traitorous tears were soaking the human’s ponytail. Katie would probably be angry that she’d have to wash the salt out of her hair! Vala hadn’t fixed this situation at all. Some empathetic Venlil she was!
“I know, honey. I know,” Katie whispered, rubbing her hand in circles on Vala’s back. “This must be such a painful realization. I’m sorry, honey. I’m sorry.”
Katie wasn’t pushing her away in fury. She was crying, too, and doing her best to comfort Vala through her own tears. Vala coiled her tail around the human’s waist, squeezing to return the hug.
“I’m so, so sorry for what I said to Mike. I see why you were so upset by it. I should have known. I should have —“
“You didn’t know.” Katie interrupted her firmly. “And now you do, and you’re accepting that new information with an open heart. It’s not your fault that you didn’t know, Vala. No one can know everything. All we can do is the best we can with the information we have.”
Vala felt as if an old wound she didn’t even know was there had been ripped open. The fur on her face itched from crying. But Katie was still there. She didn’t hate her. She seemed to understand.
“You’re not going to break up with me?” Vala whispered.
“I’m not what?”
“In your films, humans say ‘we need to talk,’ when they’re about to tell someone they’re close to that they can’t ever see them again.”
Katie’s shoulders shook with poorly suppressed laughter. “Girl… First of all, that’s usually for a romantic or sexual relationship, neither of which we have. Unless you’ve forgotten, I do have a boyfriend,” she teased.
Vala snorted. “Not likely. I still say he could tear you in half.”
“Yeah, and I happen to like that in a man,” Katie smirked back. “No, this isn’t a friend breakup. I felt really disturbed by what you said yesterday, for all the reasons you just said. I’m a teacher, Vala. I have lots of kids in my classes that have neurological differences, learning disorders. Plus, any kid could grow up to have a personality disorder or other mental health diagnoses, and they’re still all good kids who deserve community and love. It shocked me to hear you talk that way about other people, especially children. But I do understand what it’s like to be taught something that you can’t agree with when you learn more as an adult.
“I’m proud of you that you didn’t bury your head in the sand, insist that what you were taught had to be right, and refuse to accept any new information. Confronting that must have been really hard. That took bravery, strength, and a lot of empathy.”
“I don’t feel strong, let alone brave,” Vala murmured.
“Well, nonetheless you are. I’m proud of you, my friend. And I’m sorry I was so moody with you. I shouldn’t have made that sarcastic dig at your empathy last night, that wasn’t kind,” Katie said.
“It’s okay, Katie. I love you, girl.”
“Love you too, girlie.” Katie rubbed the soft fur behind Vala’s ears gently with her nails, and Vala snuggled closer for the massage. Katie smiled warmly and gently scratched under her chin. Vala flipped onto her back on the human’s lap and closed her eyes relaxedly. “Also, I’m so glad you like scritches. I wouldn’t have ever thought an adult person could ever compare to a kitten but then here you are.”
Vala flicked her ear in mock annoyance — comparing her to an infant predator? Ridiculous! — but didn’t move away from those glorious fingernails, and Katie chortled.
“So,” the human said, rubbing Vala’s belly in an undignified but wonderfully gratifying way. “I hear you destroyed the kitchen in the interest of making food?”
Vala opened one eye and swatted her with her tail. “I’m making pancakes!”
Katie chuckled. “Sounds good. Do you want me to put a pan on to preheat? Are you going to film like usual?”
“Would you mind if I did?” Vala wrapped her tail around Katie’s wrist in a gesture of friendship. “If you’re upset and you’d rather not—“
“It’s fine. It’ll be good to get back to normal. I’ll clean up the explosion, you go grab your gear.”
Vala’s tail wagged in relief and she scampered to find her camera. It was good to be back to normal.

“Today we’re making a traditional human breakfast.” Vala pointed her camera at a carafe of orange liquid. “Now, don’t burn your buds before springtime! I know it looks bloody, but I understand it’s from a fruit. Katie, what is this stuff?”
“This is orange juice. It’s a traditional breakfast drink! Oranges are a sweet citrus fruit rich in vitamin C, which we humans have to make sure to get in our food or else we get really sick.”
Vala’s tail swished with approval. Katie always seemed to bring up the exact points Vala herself would want to emphasize for their wider Federation audience. “Are you saying you humans can get sick from not eating fruit?
“That’s right! Hundreds of years ago, before we had figured out modern medicine, our ancestors would often get horrifically sick from scurvy on long sea voyages, or even over the course of a particularly hard winter. Long before we discovered vitamin deficiencies, someone realized that sailors who ate citrus fruits while away at sea wouldn’t get scurvy. They even called seafarers ‘limeys’ back then, after another popular citrus. Of course, nowadays our farming techniques are advanced enough that we have access to fresh fruits and vegetables everywhere, all the time, but that history is still alive - if a human starts to get sick, other humans will often tell them to drink orange juice for the vitamin C.”
“So it’s a traditional drink and also a folk medicine?” Vala clarified.
Katie threw her head back and laughed. “You know what, I never thought of it that way! You’re totally right. Now, other than the juice, we’re going to have a nice big breakfast because it’s Saturday and that’s what we do on weekends. So, as you can—“
Vala steeled her nerves to interrupted her roommate. “Quick reminder for any new viewers, human custom organizes time into seven day ‘weeks.’ Humans typically work at their jobs for five of those seven days, and dedicate the remaining two to relaxation and family.”
“Right! Sorry, I forget people might not know what some of these things are. I never thought I’d get caught taking weekends for granted! Okay, anyway. I’ve got some blueberry pancake batter cooking in the pan here, which I think is juuuuust about….” she trailed off and poked at the lumpy, pale blobby mass with a flattened stick, frowning slightly in concentration. Then, she carefully wiggled the stick under the blob, and quickly popped it out of the pan and flipped it back in.
“Yes!!!” Katie hoisted her stick into the air in what Vala might have once thought was a violent gesture but now realized was triumphant. “Vala, I gotta admit, I really thought I was going to mess that up and drop the pancake on the floor on camera.”
“What would you have done if that had happened?” Vala asked, remembering when she herself had assumed that humans would launch into a rage at the slightest inconvenience.
Katie smiled and ducked her head as she flipped the other cakes. “Well, I’d clean it up of course! We would make more. And then when I went to bed tonight, I’d relive the moment and never be able to sleep again from the sheer embarrassment.”
Vala’s right ear swiveled towards the human with surprise. “Really?”
Katie widened her binocular eyes directly at her Venlil friend. “Girl. If you embarrassed yourself on camera with an audience of people who might not even like you, are you saying you wouldn’t lose sleep agonizing over that moment?”
Vala ducked her own head, unconsciously echoing the movement the human had made just a moment prior. “Good point, Katie. If you can admit you were nervous about flipping your cake, I guess I should admit I still find myself surprised when you reveal you’re about as tough and scary as I am.”
Katie laughed again and slapped her hand on her thigh the way humans do to emphasize the humor. “Vala, you know by my own people’s standards I’m about as scary as a cupcake? Which, for the folks watching at home, is a lavishly decorated confection.”
Vala butted her head against the admittedly short-statured human. “Hmmm… I think I might need to try one of these ‘cupcakes’ in order to gauge that threat myself” Vala joked.
Katie flashed her teeth cheerfully at her. “Tell you what, let’s wait until after you’ve had your pancakes and see how much you’re in the mood for sugar after that. Speaking of, they’re ready. Let’s go eat!”
As the women piled their pancakes high, Vala asked Katie to talk the viewers through the toppings on the table.
“Well, you’re going for the fruit - we’ve got blueberries, strawberries, and bananas, all extremely popular with us humans. Over here I’ve got some coconut yogurt and maple syrup.”
“Yogurt - that one didn’t translate. Can you explain?”
Katie’s eyes flashed from Vala to the camera and back. “Um, yeah. Right. Okay. So, you know we’re mammals, so as babies we drink milk. Well, we also make milk into other food products through fermentation with beneficial bacteria. Now I’m vegan, so I don’t eat those, but we also make milk substitutes for traditional milk based foods from plants, and this yogurt is one such item.”
“Oh!” Vala exclaimed with surprise. “I didn’t realize humans cooked with their milk.”
Katie visibly froze, spoon hovering halfway between the fruit bowl and her own plate. “Um.” She glanced at the camera again, and then back at Vala. Katie opened her mouth as if to say something, and then closed it again.
Vala’s ears swiveled with confusion. “Are you okay, Katie?”
The human took a deep breath before responding. “I, just, um, didn’t expect this question. Sorry Vala. Look, what I’m eating here is made from a fruit called a coconut. Because it went through a fermentation process with specific types of bacteria and contains probiotics, it’s called yogurt. And this sauce here is called maple syrup, it’s actually a tree sap boiled down until it’s basically pure sugar! You’ve got to try this, I bet you’ve never had anything like it.” She proffered the bottle emphatically, eyes wide and pleading.
Vala decided to go along with the topic change. Katie was usually an exemplary interview subject, after all. “How is the maple syrup traditionally eaten?”
After breakfast, the Venlil turned the camera and microphone off while the two washed their dishes. “Katie, I noticed you looking at the camera when we were talking about our breakfast. Were you feeling nervous about something?”
Katie sighed, put the sponge down in the sink, and carelessly streaked dish suds through her hair in the interest of tucking it behind her ears. “Vala, look. You chose me as a subject because I’m vegan, right? You didn’t want to risk your audience judging us based off of seeing a human eat a vat grown steak on camera.”
“That’s right.”
“Well, it didn’t occur to me until this morning that even plant-based foods might freak people out. Most yogurt is made from animal milk, Vala. And that’s something that I’ve gotten into arguments with other humans about. I don’t eat animal foods because I personally think it’s wrong, and to talk to another human about it, well, the worst that would happen is we get annoyed at each other. But if I explained this in the wrong way to an alien audience and my personal opinions on yogurt got used as war propaganda against my own people, I honestly couldn’t live with that. I just panicked. I knew what I wanted to say, but in that moment I just couldn’t figure out what I should say.”
Vala’s ears swiveled behind her in discomfort. “You were worried that your passion about something your people do that you disagree with could sanction violence against them.”
“I guess.”
Vala could see the tension in her friend’s body and face. She rested her paw on the human’s shoulder comfortingly. “I think… for the first time, I understand how you feel.”
Katie looked up at her, eyebrows quirked. “You’re probably right.”
“Hey, Katie?”
“Yeah?”
“Do you think I could interview Mike and Ashley again? I just thought… the whole reason I’m here is to challenge my peoples’ preconceived notions and show that predators can be people. Maybe I could help other people to question whether people with Predator’s Disease are as dangerous as we’ve been told.”
“You can contact Ashley and ask. I don’t know if she’ll let you talk to Mike again — he’s her baby, and she'll want to protect him — but if you apologize and explain like you did earlier, she might be willing to speak to you. At the very least, it would give her a chance to understand where you were coming from yesterday. If you write a message, I’ll pass it on to her for you.”
Vala nodded her head solemnly in the human gesture of assent. “Thank you.”
“Of course. You know,” Katie grinned wickedly. “If you let her scratch behind your ears, she might be more willing to do an interview.”
Vala snorted. “You humans are so weird. By the way, does those orange fruits come in other colors? I like the taste but it just looks way too much like blood.”
Katie stared incredulously. “Girl, is the translator not working? The name of the fruit is literally orange. No, they don’t come in other colors!”
Vala squeaked with amusement, and Katie giggled. The more Vala tittered, the louder Katie cackled. Neither of them could breathe for laughter, and Katie had tears streaming down her face. They weren’t quite sure why oranges seemed so funny in the moment.
But after the big issues they’d confronted that morning, it just felt good to laugh together.
