The Pennsylvania Wilds is a 2 million acre area of mostly public land in north-central Pennsylvania. Contained within the wilds are many beautiful forests full of rugged terrain, cascading streams, miles of hiking trails, and plenty of remote backcountry to explore. This subreddit is a community for discussion of the PA Wilds specifically but is open to all things related to hiking, backpacking, camping, and other types of outdoor recreation in PA.
2023.02.03 05:38 Argatlam K-96 Improvements open house
Today, at the NCAT off Webb Road near Jabara Airport, KDOT held its open house for the K-96 widening and associated improvements. I attended in person.
They had a rollplot of the K-96 corridor spread over multiple tables, surrounded by poster boards giving details of proposed designs for each interchange, the National Environmental Policy Act process, and possible mitigations for increased noise. Some, but not all, of the material on display can be downloaded in PDF format here: https://www.k96improvements.com/open-house
Material not available online (as of this writing) includes the rollplot and the boards dealing with noise.
In brief, this is what KDOT proposes to do:
- Widen K-96 from four lanes to six on the inside (paving the current grass median) from west of Hillside to south of 21st Street.
- Replace the existing pavement from 21st Street to the Kellogg/I-35 interchange.
- Convert the existing diamond interchanges at Hillside, Oliver, and 21st Street to diverging diamond interchanges (DDIs), reusing the existing bridges as much as possible.
- Redevelop the Woodlawn and Rock interchanges into either DDIs or Displaced Left Turns (DLTs), and relocate the 32nd and Rock intersection so it isn't blocked by queues at the K-96 ramp signals.
- Widen the ramp terminals at Greenwich (the stated goal is to "preserve recent investment"--this interchange was added in the mid-2010's).
- Rework the Webb interchange so it is more like a diamond, but with a loop ramp for traffic transitioning from eastbound K-96 to northbound Webb, and an unusual channelization pattern for the Webb/29th signalized intersection, which will get a new eastbound K-96 exit ramp feeding into it. (People had many, many questions about this concept.)
Since K-96 would be upgraded more or less within its current footprint, I expect the right-of-way acquisition to be minimal. However, I could see there would be takes at Rock (for a larger interchange footprint and the 32nd Street relocation) and Webb (the proposed westbound exit ramp would clip part of the airfield at Jabara Airport). The posters dealing with noise noted that KDOT considers mitigation, such as sound walls, for increases of 10 dB or more. I will be surprised if any are provided because a doubling of traffic would roughly double sound power, translating to only a 3 dB increase at noise receivers whose distance to the freeway lanes will not change.
We do not currently have any DDIs in Wichita, though there are plenty in metro KC. The DLTs proposed for Woodlawn and Rock would be the first in Kansas, though one of the representatives present noted there are existing examples in Liberty, Missouri and North Carolina.
There were TV crews present, including for KSN (Channel 3).

2023.02.03 05:30 torioto 14 Days Itinerary for March/April (Tokyo/Hiroshima/Miyajima/Osaka/Kyoto/Hakone/Tokyo)
We will be visiting Japan for the first time and are very excited to see everything we can. We have spent some time researching as best as we can and this is our best attempt at a schedule. We are aiming to have an easygoing and slow pace to try to enjoy everything fully and with minimal stress and we know that can mean having to skip on some of the things we have scheduled.
We are into gaming and geeky stuff but want to balance nature/history/modern as much as we can. Most of our plans end at 8PM, and even after all our research, we still don't know what to do at night for fun. We are excited to see sakura blossons, since our trip may coincide the the full blooms. We are still figuring out how much shopping we can allow ourselves to do during our trip, not sure if we can ship stuff home. I'm wondering if I should carry and check in extra luggage just for souvenirs.
We will probably be using takkyubin to move our luggage from hotel to hotel unless we are certain we will be able to stop by the hotel first thing after arriving at a new location.
Am I missing anything obvious, or maybe packing too many locations per day? Fell free to share any recommendations for things to do.

2023.02.03 04:38 PyreOfDeath97 Tsarina Katarin IE Legendary Campaign Guide
I've just completed the Tsarina's legendary campaign after restarting many times, and so I thought I'd share how I did it in case you feel like playing her:
This campaign is fucking tough. Like hall of fame tough. It's the first total war campaign I've played where my success depended on other factions more than me. I'd been battered by almost every chaos faction before I won the campaign. This wasn't like Crone Hellebron's campaingn where you had allies everywhere and could take out a faction at a time with dragons and a witch who could solo an army. Your forces suck (except groms), your LL is weak as shit, your generals have no spells, it takes ages to train up heroes,
- Your campaign success depends entirely on the state of Praag to the north. If it falls to Throgg or Archaon before you've amassed several ice guard armies and put them in defensive positions start the campaign again, because they'll send 10-15 army doomstacks to kislev which are impossible to defend against
- The Rospmenn clan hold Praag well into the mid game, every now and then send an army to lend them a hand in siege and they should hold it until you're almost ready to confederate Kostaltyn
- The supporters mechanic doesn't mean anything, you always win, so no need to bother with it
- Invoke Ursun and only Ursun. It helps a tonne for rogue armies which stray into your lands and means they can only attack 1 or 2 minor settlements before being depleted. Plus 5 supporters for occupying a settlement.
- Keep an eye on Kostaltyn, he's the only thing preventing Throt from terrorising your lands.
- Leave no vampires alive. Not only do they become superpowers, the allied AI seem to love prioritising them over your mutual foes
-Always go for Tempest Frost Maidens. I know the Lore of Ice spells are tempting but the tempest spell can take out an entire division of lower level infantry and cavalry. I've had Frost Maidens rack up 400-600 kills in a battle with just this spell. If you want you can combo them with an ice witch with lroe of ice spells.
I like my minor settlement compositions to be walls, barrels and windmills for maximum income (unless they have resources). If your settlements are on the frontier don't bother levelling them up as they'll change hands a lot.
You're also poor as fuck in this campaign so I like to make a beeline for the quartermasterenowned and feared perks for lords, and then move on to the red ones which provide perks for ice guards and groms.
In turn 1 for some inexplicable reason Baersonling is to your south. I like to attack his nearby army then retreat back to Kislev. Build both growth buildings and recruit a Kossar doomstack for Katarin. Train up an Ice Witch too, and when Katarin's stack is complete recruit a Boyar and a few more Kossars until you're in the red.
Research Hooked Axe Blades for the Kossar perks, then I like to research the growth techs, pirates weapons and the one which adds a recruitment slot. The objective is to level up Kislev as quick as possible to A) stand on its 2 legs in sieges and B) allow you to get some actually decent units in your roster
Take Vitevo and Fort Jakova as quick as possible. Don't bother building up Vitevo but build the iron mine and (later) tier 3 walls for some sweet cash.
At the earliest opportunity attack Azhag. He usually sends a force past Fort Javoka so sneak attack him there, keep recruiting Kossars, and move to Karak Ungor. Take Karak Ungor and move both armies to the main settlement to the east, unless Azhag starts recruiting in Karak Raziak, in which case move them south then east.
Check every turn at this point to see if you can initiate diplomacy with Drycha. When you can sign a non-agression pact, and if she doesn't want money give her Vitevo. She leaves you alone for a long time if you do this.
By now you have at least enough cash to support 2 stacks, one with the Tsarina, the ice witch you trained and maybe a patriarch, and one suicide army with the Boyar. Kislev should be tier 3 at least, and you can get Tsar guards with the monument. Recruit some Tsar guards into Katarin's army till youre in the red again, then move south to Sylvania.
This is where luck comes in. Sometimes Sylvania is a bitch to beat, or Drycha breaks the pact, or Throt comes down with 3 armies. Assuming all goes to plan you should be able to eat at Vlad's armies no problem and take his territories. Franz is a good help, as are Karak Kadrin and the Golden Order.
The objectives in this phase are to destroy some enemy factions to free up your allies, and to take enough settlements to afford some good armies. I like to move both armies together in a wrecking ball motion because they'll get picked off if they're alone.
Keep recruiting ice maidens and patriarchs for your armies, they should all have one of each. After Sylvania is gone you'll have enough for 3, maybe 4 armies depending on composition. I just use Kossar Doomstacks and more specialised units for Katarin in case a tough battle comes along. After Sylvania is gone assess the southern pass near fort Oberstrythe and if the Bloody Handz or another faction are pouring in park an army there and build walls.
Move to attack Festus, who's bogging down Franz and the empire. You can also take Drycha out at this point but usually she's no threat by now anyway. Wolfenburg has a gold mine and you have 3 or so major cities you can recruit from. I wouldn't advise giving them back to Franz as you need the money.
Pacify any other enemy factions south of Zavastra. Don't take Zavastra till just before the late game, as the objective is to keep under Archaon's radar.
Kislev should now be tier 4 and you can get ice guard and groms. Spam ice guard for Katarin, and for the other lords I like to use 13 ice guard, 5 groms, a patriarch, and a frost maiden with the artillerist trait (-30% upkeep for groms).
you can chill for a bit here until you look about 10 turns away from confederating Kostaltyn. Take Zavastra and Castle Von Rauken and build tier 3 walls, and park ice guard armies in them. Park the remaining forces 1 turn away from praag. At this point I had 4 or so armies.
By now you're on the chaos factions' radar, and have confederated Kostaltyn. Move your castle von rauken army to erengrad and build it up (if it isnt tier 5 already). The Zavastra army can take out Throt and some of the nasties in the province, and your Kislev armies can take Praag. If you can afford a fifth army get it, regardless of how high level. The Ursun invocation will mean you can mop up armies with kossar stacks while your ice guard armies do the heavy lifting. Try to get some war coordination going for allied reinforcements.
Use Praag as a sponge to mop up the chaos armies while you secure your norther border. Try to take the Tower of Khrakk quickly as it porvides a nice western chokepoint, as does castle alexandronov. At this point I like to send my armies on suicide runs through enemy territory, constantly recruiting, and moving my border inch by inch.
When you get to the sea in the north it's a bitch to defend. West of Kraka Drak especially, At this point I put 2 armies along the coast to kill off invaders and moved a force east to take care of clan ferrik. You'd be tempted to just stop here and defend but the chaos factions will send nastier and nastier doomstacks and one crack means you can kiss everything above Praag bye-bye. I took an elite army across into the chaos wastes to attract Archaon. Once clan ferrik was taken care of my forces looped back into the chaos wastes and took out Norsca and the chaos factions. By that point the game was basically won. Just make sure all monuments are built, especially the Praag ones.
WHERE I GOT LUCKY
The Barrow Legion were defeated by Couronne. Wintertooth never became a true superpower, being roughly equal in strength to me.
Kostaltyn held Erengrad and the Hell Pit, meaning taking out Throt was a few skirmishes in minor settlements.
Sylvania weren't OP when I attacked them.
Disciples of the Maw didn't become big, only Crooked Moon and the Bloody Hands.
The Goromadny Tribe took Praag, and being weak as shit would send an army to Kislev, get their asses beat, and sue for peace, meaning in a weird way my northern border was secured.
WHERE I GOT UNLUCKY
Festus declared war on me early and started sending stacks to Vitevo.
Azhag rooted himself near Festus so I had to spread my forces thin to clear him out.
Archaon was a major superpower and it took a lot of ambushing and cheese tactics to take him out.
Clan Ferrik declared war on me early and weaselled an army into Vitevo every now and then.
The Caravan of Blue Roses were number 1 in power and almost took out Karak Kadrin, meaning I had to divert 2 or 3 armies to take care of them. All my allies prioritised them meaning I was alone against chaos.
Thanks for reading, hope this helps! And I'd love suggestions on which faction to play next :)

2023.02.03 01:06 rsnorunt Critique My Itinerary! 20 days in UT/AZ in March
Hi all! I'm looking forward to seeing the parks in UT/AZ! In addition to the national parks, I'm also looking forward to seeing national monuments and other public land. In particular, I'm really looking forward to:
- The rim-to-river-to-rim hike at the Grand Canyon.
- Seeing Zion canyon at full lushness (ie, why I'm doing this in spring)
- Exploring slot canyons
- Seeing a diversity of national parks (I have a kind of silly goal to hit 30 in one year - I'm at 16 so far)
- Seeing GSE and Bears ears (They're so controversial I want to see what they're like)
- Hiking a lot (ideally 10+ miles a day for non-rest days)
I know that I'm just getting a taste of what Utah has to offer, and I'm excited to make more trips here in the future. Here's the itinerary (questions at the bottom):

Tues: Drive back to SF (6h)
The trip is planned to start the first week of March. I plan to sleep in my car most of the time, with some stops at hostels or hotels to socialize, rest, and shower. I'm a relatively fit man in my mid 20s, and I'm an avid hiker, but I've never backpacked before and don't intend to start doing so here. I tend to do very long days when I camp, like waking up at 5 am and sleeping at 8 pm. I'm constrained more by money than time. I've done long parks road trips like this before, but this will be my longest and farthest from civilization so I'm a bit nervous. Questions I have:
- Is this itinerary too rushed?
- How can I reduce the amount of driving? What should I cut? What should I add?
- Is this trip too early? Will I have to deal with too much snow?
- Is the scenery here too same-y? I like a lot of diversity in my trips, and tend to prefer forests to deserts (though I'm willing to be converted)
- I drive a 2wd, regular clearance hatchback. Will I run into too many problems?
- Any recommendations for socializing? I'm pretty extroverted, and usually start suffering after 3-4 days without substantial conversations. Unfortunately, I don't have any friends along this route, and there aren't really any cities for most of it. I'm definitely that guy who tries to talk to people on the trail, but I find it hard to get the longedeeper conversations I need.
- Any safety recs? I try to hike more crowded trails when I'm alone in case I get hurt, but there seem to be a lot of beautiful but remote trails here.
Thanks for the advice!

2023.02.02 22:42 hasbro [USA-OR][H] Gaggia Classic Pro with PID, 9bar OPV, IMS Shower Screen, low profile tray and more [W] Cash locally
Images and timestamp: https://imgur.com/a/bMd5taf
Pics are high res, feel free to open them in a new tab and zoom in.
Gaggia Classic Pro purchased from Amazon on May 31st 2021. Selling as we upgraded to Breville dual boiler.
Includes all original parts (portafilter, drip tray, cord, water tank etc). No box. Also included are
- REX-C100 PID installed: Main PID loop for brew temperature and alarm loop for steam temperature.
- PT100 temperature sensor installed to get 0.1degree resolution on PID.
- Dual solid state relays installed for independent brew and steam temperature control.
- Pre heating tank added next to the main boiler to lower the temperature drop during shots. Similar to (https://www.home-barista.com/repairs/preheating-incoming-water-on-gaggia-classic-t2794.html)
- MrShades OPV Spring 9 Bar installed
- Bottomless Portafilter
- IMS Gaggia 200µm precision showerscreen - standard (GA200IM)
- "The One" single hole steam tip for the Gaggia Classic Pro
- 3D-printed and acrylic sealed low-profile drip tray. Also includes the original tray.
- Gaggia Classic - 10 piece upgraded service kit -gaskets & o-rings (unused)
- Original spring + the extra springs from MrShades kit.
It was used primarily by me, and I did regular backflushes to keep the grouphead clean. Here our water is pretty soft, so I only did descaling with the Gaggia solution once in a while.
In terms of performance, it is massively better than the stock. PID lets you have very accurate control on brew temperature, and the pre heat tank ensures that the temperature drop is quite minimal during the shot (~2deg at most). The steam pressure is controlled by the alarm loop on the PID controller and boosted by "the One" single hole steam tip.
Note 1: that the alarm loop is not true PID so that one has some swing. But it does not matter much in the steam side, as that can still has faster recovery during the steaming despite the swings.
Note 2: The brew/steam lights are behaving differently as the solid state relays are done to improve reliability. The PID controller tells you the temperature so they are not needed anyways.
Looking to sell locally. I prefer to have cash during exchange, meeting at a public place. I am around Cedar Mills/Bethany, west of PDX.
I have sold (and selling) on ebay (https://www.ebay.com/usvosloo82
). I have sold/purchased on flashlight
and purchased on Knife_Swap
I might sell nationally if there are no takers around USA-OR PDX, though that would be extra for shipping. [Paypal goods and services with Invoice in this case]

2023.02.02 21:52 InfernoAA March Updates + Blitz Revamped!
| || | submitted by InfernoAA to FantasyBookingElite [link] [comments]
Alpha Dog #3 (Seyfried) here. Though February has just begun, we as management believe there’s no better time than now to look towards the future, that future being March. Or more specifically, what March onwards will mean for Blitz and the Pure Division. While it may be initially popular, I assure you… uh, yeah. I don’t need to assure anything. This is going to be radical, folks.
For anyone that missed our glorious edition of the February Updates, there’s a new Blitz GM who’ll be taking over the vacant spot, and he’s none other than Yours Truly. That’s right,
Brian Hill Inferno
is the new Blitz GM. And I cannot express how genuinely excited I am to get that spark back into the division that it’s been sorely missing. Personally, Pure Rules has helped me find that passion in booking again, and I strongly urge others to consider giving it the old college try if they haven’t already. A stress-free, maximum 1000-word commitment each week sounds like a steal if you ask me. And unlike before, there’ll be a proper structure to this like the Heavyweight Division, with a consistent weekly show and a set of annual PPVs to look forward to, and more.
As some of you may be aware, I’m a massive old-school ROH fan and an equally enthusiastic indie wrestling enjoyer, and as such, I’ll be hoping to incorporate some of that same underground feel into Blitz moving forwards, like Black & Gold NXT once was compared to the Main Roster. The closest vibe I can picture is something of that aforementioned classic ROH with its myriad of gritty pure wrestling masterclasses led by the likes of Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness.
Blitz will still be running from Friday 10PM EST to Monday 10PM EST
each week starting in March (aside from PPV weeks like Firestorm), but there should hopefully be special episodes dotted along the way. I’m partial to the EVOLVE/PROGRESS style of giving each show a title alongside its numbering, so let’s hope my creativity serves me enough to keep things interesting from week to week with unique taglines. And hey, even if not, the cards will no doubt still be worth joining in on.
FBE Pure Championship Visual representation of what the title would roughly look like in kayfabe
The prize to strive for in the Pure Division is our coveted FBE Pure Championship, back from its month as the X Division Championship. Already boasting 4 brilliant reigns, currently entering its 5th under the record 2nd spell of Dr. Logan Wright
– a man I’d like to give a special congratulations to on his incredible achievement, proud of you my friend – the rest of you could have the chance to add your names to the title’s legacy should you consider stopping by on future episodes of Blitz.
Blitz Official Theme Song
Like Firestorm has had “This Fire Burns” by Killswitch Engage as its staple music for the past 4 years, Blitz will also have a tune of its own to be remembered by, that being “Adrenaline Rush” by Twista
. Fast and hard-hitting, it should perfectly capture what Pure Rules is all about.
Alongside our regular Big 4 PPVs (New Beginning, WarZone, BTE, Final Stand), we’ll also be having our ‘Blitz 4’ PPVs in the same months, those being February, May, August, and November. These will serve as spiritual successors to the Overcharge series of last year, providing a bigger platform for important Pure Rules matches to be showcased. And they are as follows:
February: Hurrah! Another Year…
Named after Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies’ 2004 EP, or as we better know it, the beloved submission finisher of one of the greatest technical wrestlers alive today and all-around British hero, Zack Labour Jr., this will be the first of our 4 PPVs. And it’s no coincidence that it roughly coincides with the Chinese New Year. To be honest, times have been hard on FBE lately, but the CCP have graciously offered to sponsor and support us through our struggles. So, we’ll be returning their kindness by dedicating this PPV to them.
With traditions highlighting mythological creatures like the symbol of rebirth, “Fènghuáng” (the Chinese Phoenix), and its counterpart, “Shenlong” (the God Dragon), it’s the perfect way to “rebirth” our calendar in the Pure Division whilst giving a subtle nod to other more technically proficient dragons like their American breed, Bryan Danielson. Long Live Sabre.
May: P.U.R.E (Perfectly Unadulterated Regal Excellency)
Mr. Perfect. William Regal. Bret Hart. What do they all have in common? They’re lauded as some of the greatest pure wrestlers to have ever grappled. And they’re the kinds of wrestlers that should be emulated to make it far in these lands. The Pure Division’s version of BTE, P.U.R.E will coincide with the Anniversary of the first-ever episode of Blitz, which took place in May of last year. In addition to an undoubtedly stacked card, it’ll feature the Finals to our annual tournament (more on that later), proving to be a fitting stage to write your name in the history books forever.
August: Rush Hour
For the Wild Westers and FBE historians, we’ll be bringing back a classic for BTE season. Given that FBE’s largest annual show will take up the bulk of preparations and energy that month, this PPV will offer a unique challenge to the roster, in which the show will have a 24-hour deadline. The original Rush Hour PPV seeing the likes of Desmond Caid vs Atlas Rogue, Fruit Gambino vs Nate Matthews, FBE’s first-ever cash-in, and Capital STEEZ’s PPV debut, the sequels to come should be just as thrilling with a whole new crop of talent to bear the test of booking and submitting within a day (don’t ask for extensions I swear to God I will kill you).
November: The Shinkansen Express
You know who likes trains? Ethan Fadely. And if you haven’t noticed, his opinion is very important here as Alpha Dog #2. This show exists purely to keep JT (Elmer) in FBE. Well, there’s another reason, but that’s the one we’re focusing on right now. Shoutout The Aether Ace.
Since the name Bullet Train was already taken by Brad Pitt’s career greatest movie, November’s PPV will instead be named after the Japanese equivalent to said phrase – “Shinkansen”. Not nearly as traumatising as the underground STEEZ faces on his daily commute, this high-speed train themed show will feature the debut of Blitz’s very own unique stipulation – “Silver Bullet”
Our counterpart to Guerrilla Warfare, the reigning champion will defend against 4 other competitors across 3 rounds (24 hours of booking and 24 hours of voting each), with the votes of each round being tallied at the end to determine the ultimate winner of the bout. Whoever places last is barred from challenging for the title over the next 3 months. In kayfabe, it’ll be contested like WWE’s famed “Championship Scramble” – competitors entering in timed intervals, with unofficial reigns being recorded along the way through each ensuing pinfall, the person at the end of the time-limit with the last pinfall being declared the winnechampion.
I mentioned a tournament earlier when introducing our flagship PPV, and it’s now time to shed more light on that. In the Wild West days of FBE, we witnessed… quite something by the name of the E1 Climax, won by Atlas Rogue. Though the concept was great on paper, the execution is where it ultimately faltered. Having its 10 competitors push through matches for 5 straight weeks at a time when voting had at one point dropped to a miserable low of 3 voters, the less said about the tournament outside its brilliant Finals match, the better.
When Blitz returns in March, things will hopefully be different, as we’ll be bringing back the E1 Climax under the name of the “Shining Light League”
, paying homage to the first person to experiment with Pure Rules in early FBE – Hall of Famer Petite Jupiter. Spread over the following couple months, participants will be divided into two blocks that’ll compete in their respective tournament matches in alternating weeks (rather than be constantly working throughout the entire period), with the round-robin culminating at P.U.R.E, the winner earning a shot at the FBE Pure Championship! In the event the champion wins, they may pick their next challenger instead.
Alongside everything already mentioned, here’s just some other general notes:
- As GM, I’m making the choice to step down from challenging for the Pure Title. This is about y’all for me, and I’d rather keep it that way. That being said, I’ll still be working Pure Rules matches as often as possible for anyone that wants to test themselves.
- Whilst we usually only have regular 1-on-1 Pure Rules matches on Blitz, please be aware there’s other match types to toy around with if you’re looking to use Blitz as a platform to build a story. You can work tag matches, hardcore-style stipulations (No DQ, Unsanctioned, etc.; 1K Words but links and pictures are allowed), the newly-introduced Pure version of 2-out-of-3 Falls – British Rounds, as well as regular 2-out-of-3 Falls bouts.
- This upcoming FBE Anniversary loop will be the culmination of Season 1 of Blitz, at the end of which those with the best performances/records will be entered into a #1 Contender’s match at New Beginning V for a shot at the title on the first Blitz of March.
With that being said, let’s get into introducing our upcoming show…
Hurrah! Another Year… I (February 4th 10PM EST to February 11th 10PM EST)
The first of our Blitz 4 PPVs is starting in the next day or so and will be included in the ending of Blitz’s Season 1. Shortly after this post goes up, I’ll be sending out messages asking if people are interested in participating, and the card will subsequently be thrown together on short notice, so please be punctual in your responses. If I don’t happen to message you but you want in, feel free to shoot me a DM and I’ll see if there’s still a spot I can accommodate you with.
That should be it for now, but if you have any questions, feedback, criticisms, etc., again my DMs are open for talking, and we can work together towards producing the best possible version of Blitz. Pure Rules for life, baby.
2023.02.02 21:13 Davisparrago Open worlds games with builds
i'm looking for games that allows free exploration (like open worlds) and allows you to do your own build (like Skyrim sneaky archer, destruction mage, dagger assassin...). This is a list of a games that i've played.
The Witcher 3.
It has very few builds imo (mostly special weapons/armors) but exploration and quests were amazing.
Bought on launch and couldn't play it due to the bug fiesta, i gave it a try a month ago and started loving it when i learnt a bit of cyberware and builds
Skyrim and Oblivion.
Oblivion felt very outdated but absolutely loved both of them exploration is insane and it has plenty of builds to try, i got 1000h+ in vanilla Skyrim
Far cry series
very few playstyles to try but i generally like this franchise.
Red dead redemption 2
this one is tricky, it doesn't have builds, i don't really like the "wild west" setting in general but the open world and its details are fantastic, the bounty system is utterly shit at a point that i still haven't finished the game tho.
Fallout 4 and new vegas
Again...not a fan of the radioactive 1960ish setting but i like the builds, exploration and quests, i prefer the elder scrolls all the way but i definitely liked fallout series.
You might think that i'm not really into videogames buut...i'm not really into souls games which is pretty sad since Elden Ring has features that are just perfect, no bullshit 3h long tutorials, access to the whole map, mysterious vibes, cool builds, super cool signature weapons that can be looted at basically any point in the game but it frustrates me too much wasting my time doing all the path back to the boss or wherever because i died, also i can't control a camera with a joystick so i play with M&K.
This is the game i'm playing right now and i love it as much as i hate it.
Last Borderlands feel more like a mindless mmo but i like the game loop, it has cool builds but even thought they are open world they don't have that "exploration vibes" that i feel with Skyrim and Elden Ring.
Note: i've tried these and didn't really get into them: Mount & Blade, Valheim, Terraria.
So...any suggestions? thank you!

2023.02.02 20:36 peaceman14 Humans Don't do magic. Chapter 4: The Orcs
The Elven empire has capitulated, the remnants of their militaries which did not join the Human Empire scattered across the planet, some stayed on the Archipelago continuing their fight as small unorganised bands of terrorist cells targeting mostly civilian human convies and infrastructure coming into the islands. While others slipped through the grasps of human patrol ships and sought refuge amongst the Dwarves and Orcs, rejoining the fray as volunteer corps.
In the North, human forces pushed steadily now partially unbound by the needs of a terrestrial supply chain. While In the East, forces saw tremendous progress at first, enchanted power armour combined with flamethrowers, incendiary rounds from artillery and reliable close in air support ensured that the undead hordes, Orc, animal or human alike stayed dead. It was so successful to the point where high command had to change kill count quotas in the east for field promotions. As infantrymen that were averaging 10 to 20 kills before, were now hitting closer to 100 to 120 kills per engagement with their new enchanted equipment. With artillery crews and pilots having kills numbering in the thousands to tens of thousands.
That was until the liberation forces began to reach the outskirts of their first major city of Guangzhou. Only to find nothing, but lush green plains. Large open plains that were, before flooded with waves upon waves of never ending undead were now empty. The 40th Terran Armoured regiment was the first to contact this anomaly.
“Do you see anything Commander?” Driver Sam called from below the armoured hull.
“That’s just it, There’s nothing” Tank commander Eric replied, scanning the forest in the distance with the periscope of their tank. It was a standard MBT, equipped with a standard 7.62 MG5 as a coaxial machine gun, and a 125 mm cannon which was capable of loading High explosive as well as armour piercing ammunition types. Both of which are fully automated, allowing all the crew to be stationed in the hull. 50 more were parked alongside them, forming a long line of steel elephants perched atop a hill, ready to decimate any undead attempting to approach. They were of course escorted by powered infantry behind them, armed with flamethrowers and the new standard issue for powered infantry, a 50 calibre machine gun.
“Heh, maybe they gave up.” Chimed Gunner Don.
“I doubt it” He dismissed, Scanning the area once more, he spotted something peculiar. A bush in the distance, just moved. A puff of smoke, a distant crackle, followed by a streak of light rocketing towards his vehicle. Slamming into the enchanted turret, the glyphs burned to life, but quickly fizzled out. Allowing the enchanted depleted uranium dart to promptly embed itself into the coaxial machine gun.
“Holy shit!” Eric yelled
“ Gunner! AP!”
“ Dial in my azimuth”
Deafening booms echoed across the hill, as the line tanks rocked back from the recoil. Releasing a volley of depleted Uranium Shell projectiles at Supersonic speeds at the estimated target. Penetrating through the thin foliage the glyphs of the shells glowed as it slammed into the enchanted steel hull of the other vehicle, Fizzling out quickly the shells penetrated the the target’s turret and hull, turned their crew into a splatter of blood and entrails, A few others penetrated the steel blast door, slamming into their ammohold.
The gunner watched, through his scope, as 2 large fire spouts burst out from the back of the target’s turret.
“ Target destroyed ” Don announced.
“ Holy crap! You guys ok?” A voice crackled over the radio.
“ Yea! The coax is down and our enchantments are fizzled out. But we’re ok ” Eric answered,
“ Wait… Shit… Contact Front!” The voice yelled, leaning forward the commander looked through the Periscope, watching as hundreds of outdated human armoured vehicles poured out of the forest,Their front line was made up of hundreds of T34s and Shermans from the second World War, with more modern MBTs from the cold war and early information era being spotted in the backline taking aim on their position, all sporting glyphs on their hulls.
Loud booms and crackles echoed throughout the vast plains, cannons fired, shells hit, munitions exploded, and radios crackled to life as The 40th battalion attempted to keep a tidal wave of steel from crashing upon them. The frontline made of ancient equipment climbed the hill with breakneck speed similar to the undead hordes that normally assaulted human positions, but now ever more resilient, strengthened by the engineering, and craftsmanship of our very own ancestors.
These old but resilient machines of war would ram themselves into advanced vehicles that made up the line, their enchantments redirecting the collision energy into our own creating a feedback loop. Though their enchantments were weaker and would fizzle out far before ours another would ram into the back of the depleted enemy tank to continue the loop. Quickly fizzling out our enchantments and stunning the crew. After which the undead crews of these tanks would exit their vehicles and begin to board the disabled human tank killing the crew inside when they finally breach the armoured hatches, All this while the still outdated but more advanced early information era and cold war vehicles poured fire on the human position from a distance. The powered infantry, stationed behind the line of heavy armour, had scrambled back to their armoured fighting vehicles and had begun assisting the MBTs however they can with their autocannons.
“ Pull back! We’ve lost- ” The raucous sound of bending and tearing metal interrupted the transmission “ Shit!,” A deafening Crack, “ Get back, you-” Gunfire, “AAhhh, fuck you” a gun shot. “ retreat…they’re coming round…The sides…”He ordered breathing now heavy, Undead groans could be heard in the background. “Commander…Nick… Signing out” A thunderous boom echoed both over the radio and across the battlefield, A vehicle encapsulated by both the hulls of old human tanks and the bodies of long dead soldiers exploded, disintegrating the undead and sending its turret flying high into the air, The shockwave flipping the few vehicles.
Whilst another vehicle was hit by a round, causing its turret’s blast panels burst open propelled by a sprout of pure flame, but still it continued to reverse back down the hill. Alongside the many other armoured vehicles that were now in a fighting retreat, attempting to outmanoeuvre the swarm of outdated AFVs that had taken advantage of the chaos of battle and had begun to sweep round the sides of the unsuspecting battalion. AFVs that had pulled ahead of the retreating MBTs have engaged the flanking forces and are attempting to hold a retreat corridor open, The corridor did not hold for long as many of the retreating human forces were being taken out or disabled by either swarms javelins and tow-missiles fired from the flanking AFVs or the AFVs themselves ramming into them.
Once the Encapsulation was complete, the slaughter began. The swarm of older AFVs now positioned behind the surrounded human forces began unloading swarms of undead infantry, all armed with the equipment of their time, Rifles, Javelins launchers or grenades. Quickly pulling the battlefield into chaos, as powered infantry engaged undead soldiers in the open whilst being fired upon by the autocannons of the wall of armour that now encapsulates them.
“ Gunner! Hit that- AHh” Eric cried as his tank was rammed by a 25ton WW2 era vehicle, which had instantaneously crushed his vehicle’s gun barrel and knocked out his driver. Another deafening bang, as the hatch above his head was torn open. Pulling out his pistol, he aimed upwards and shot, killing the undead soldier instantly. He climbed out of the tank and shot 4 more rounds around him killing 4 more. Before a shot tore through his chest and punctured his lung. Holding the entry wound Eric collapsed onto the back of his vehicle
The world around him is a blaze, soldiers screaming in pain, lying on the ground in a mess of bloodied entrails and broken metals. Tanks and other vehicles lay ablaze or buried beneath a tide of steel. Coming down from the hill they had once been stationed on, standing atop a Centurion MBT was a 2m tall figure, it wore a tailor made recreation of a human general’s uniform. Its skin was green, and its shoulders were wide . The smoking barrel of its chrome 1911 was aimed at Eric. The relentless tide of ancient warmachines parting around him like an ocean around an island. Its centurion parked alongside Eric’s tank, and he hopped aboard. Gasping heavily and holding onto his chest, Eric watched in terror as the Orc grabbed the radio headset from his head, and with a perfect imitation of his Commanding officers voice, mannerisms and character spoke into it’s mic.
“High Command this is Tango Alpha, Romeo, The Orcish resistance was unexpected but we have crushed them with acceptable losses. All elements are go, for Operation Hammer and Anvil.” Coughing, Eric struggled to shout out, to interrupt him. To somehow let command know of the Orc’s ploy. But all that came from his mouth and muffled gurgles as he began to choke on his own blood.
“Commander? Why aren’t you using assigned comns device” A voice called back
“My device was damaged in battle.”
“Understood commander. Any other updates?” The voice acknowledged
“ None, over and out.”
“Understood over and out.” The voice replied, the Orc then placed the headset back into the vehicle. He walked over the Eric knelt down beside him.
“ You fought well, my friend.” The Orc smiled at Eric placing a hand on his chest. “ So I will give you the warrior’s honour. I will absorb your soul and put it to good use.” The Orc concentrated on Eric’s mind, absorbing his personality, struggles, his memories and experiences and even skills. All of it began to surge into the Orc’s vast mind, which by this time was more of a library filled with the memories, personalities, stratagems and intellect of every single human soldier, scientist, historian, teacher or officer that he had cared to absorb.
“Why do you bother? Is a soldier’s soul not extremely bitter to you orcs?” A dwarf commented, his steel helmet peeking out from the centurion’s driver’s hatch.
“Their experiences may prove useful.”
“Hmph, for a species made up of magicless vermin their experiences should mean nothing.”
“ Careful, Thalgrim, that is the same kind of arrogance that got the Elves destroyed.”
“ My apologies Archmage Talandar.”
“ At ease Thalgrim I took no offence, it was simply a reminder.” Talandar said, watching the distant ambers of battle slowly die. As the final terran soldier fell.
“ Now to bring them all back under my command.” He declared a magical wooden staff appearing in his hand. It shone with green energy as he slammed it onto the metal steel hull. A wave of green energy washed over the battlefield Instantly reviving the fallen human soldiers as shambling undead. The body of Eric comes to life once more along side the countless new shambling husks all still equipped with their respective weapons, armour and most importantly experiences, all bound to the will of the Archmage that had revived them.
“ This enough to get you replicating?”
“Aye, that would do.”
High above the battlefield, on orbital station geneva, Marshall Jean had recovered from her battle with the Elves and now stood ready to lead humanity on to another victory.
“ Marshall, your tactical map has been updated, you would be pleased to note that forces in the west and north have made great progress during your absence. Science division has also made a breakthrough regarding gene soldiers with the help of the captured Elven Archmage’s brain” The voice on the intercom informed her as she entered the tactical board room once more. Her generals have begun leading their campaigns on the ground taking charge of each front as necessary.
A holo display booted up in front of her, showing a 2D map of the continent, and their frontlines. The riots in the Elven archipelago have been quelled, Admiral Nimtz after his successful campaign in the south is being rerouted to support the Northern front. Reports in the north showed liberation forces taking control of many vital cities and have completely liberated the old human nations of Turkey, Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, parts of Italy, parts of Switzerland are currently pushing up into the City of Bern and retaking the Lichtenstein. While in the east forces have made immense progress liberating grounds all the way up Xian and are attempting to push towards Beijing to cut off Orcish supply routes to Shanghai, Guangzhou and Taiwan.
Though forces in the east seem to be some anomalies. It seems that following the liberation of many Orcish concentration camps, many of the people kept in these concentration camps are begging to be put back in, resulting in a drop of morale of the soldiers on the frontlines as these people struggle to reintegrate back into society. These camps were reported to host a sort of deep dive VR system made from the combining captured human VR tech and Orcish spiritual magic. Apparently the people kept at these camps were put into these machines which simulated an incredibly realistic, full, happy and fulfilling life in the span of a few days. Pulling a user out was akin to telling a person that has achieved all their hopes and dreams that everything they have built, everything they have achieved and fought for was fake, and surmounted to nothing. As such many liberated captives, either, begged to be put back in or broke down mentally. A constant repeat of this with every liberated camp has heavily impacted the morale of our frontline troops and generals and commanders are resorting to swapping out soldiers on the eastern front with the northern one.
Jean reviewed the information thoroughly before scrolling over to the siege of Guangzhou, the 40th armoured regiment has encountered slight resistance but has seemingly overcome and is moving into Guangzhou,
The Anvil is in place and now she will drop the Hammer. The orbital strike battalion would drop on the city with the support of low orbital spacecraft to resupply, reinforce and medivac out wounded or liberated.
“ Officer, execute operation Hammer and Anvil.”
“ Yes Ma’am.” The officer acknowledged. Instantly her tactical map shifted showing thousands of drop pods and spacecraft beginning to descend onto the city below. Together with the battalion of tanks and AFVs moving into the city, the force would create a perfect pincer, crushing all expected resistance.
“Uhm Commander? We’re picking up missile launches from Guangzhou,” The officer’s asked through the intercom
“ Multiple patriot missile defence batteries have come online across the city.”
Back on the ground, bright orange streaks punched through the blanket of grey clouds above Guangzhou. Whilst hundreds of white streaks rose from the ground to meet them. Inside one of these pods Ramirez, held on tight to his seatbelt, praying he would at least make it to the ground. Looking through the small viewport above the head of his squadmate Tyrus, he could see another burning through the atmosphere alongside him. Feeling the bumps and hearing the muffled explosions around his pod he could only assume many others were not as lucky as theirs. He looked towards the altimeter on the door, watching as its numbers slowly spun towards 0, Yearning for it to spin a little faster. Hoping to reach the ground.1000, 900, 800, 700, 600,
A Deafening roar echoed through the pod, as the jets activated, slowing their rapid descent, 400, 300. Another deafening roar, but this time from a much more unfriendly engine. Instantly a missile tore through the pod beside him detonating with an ear-splitting boom, tearing apart both his and his neighbour’s metal shell. Sending him and his squad rocketing towards the ground.
“Warning, Su… su.. suit condition critical, eject.Eject” The Ai crackled over his in suit speaker, Ramirez found himself laying on his back. Opening his eyes, he found his pod blown half open as grey cloudy skies greeted him as opposed to the steel shell of the landing pod. Struggling, he pushed open the panel on his suit's right arm, and pushed the ejection button 3 times. Quickly the suit opened up, pushing off the metal suit he slowly got to his feet. Grabbing an enchanted rifle, a pistol and a small earpiece off the suit’s opened shoulder,
Distant gunfire and explosions indicated the battle was still ongoing.Picking up a few grenades from one of the pod’s still intact supply cabinet, Ramirez mounted his earpiece on his ear and gripped his rifle tightly. Cautiously and silently he exited the broken pod and walked out into the ruined streets of Guangzhou. All of his squadmates were dead, their mangled bodies littering the streets. Some died on impact while others died fighting as indicated by the small bullet holes in their power suits.
“Ahh, Shit.” he muttered to himself, slowly making his way deeper into the city. Tapping on his earpiece, he activates his radio to try and contact the command.
“The assault has failed. All forces are to retreat and regroup at Tian he stadium. ” A voice crackled through his earpiece, before repeating itself.
Pulling out his touchscreen device from his pocket, he noted that he was in what was called the HaiZhu district, a district that was surrounded by 2 rivers. If wanted to get to the stadium he needed to go north and cross the Guangzhou bridge. Holding his rifle in hand, he stuck close to the abandoned buildings, Ramirez looked at the wrecked city around him, before letting out a sigh. “Ahh shit, I best get moving.” He muttered to himself before creeping down the road towards the bridges. The area around him was quiet, distant gunfire and explosions a constant reminder of the imminent danger. Creeping through the buildings he spotted shambling corpses in a building across the street from him. They wore old urban camouflage uniforms and had kevlar vests and outdated rifles. He believed they were once called kalashnikovs. These husks still patrolled around the building with purpose minds bound to their training, rifles slung around in front of their chest. Their eyes scanned the surroundings robotically.
Hiding behind a wrecked car, Ramirez just managed to evade the gaze of the undead guard. Peaking, up above the car, Ramirez watched as the undead continued to survey the street. Knowing he couldn’t move from behind this car without alerting the everwatching guard. He slowly and silently took aim with his weapon. Bracing himself for a gunfight, holding his breath he aligned the scope to the undead guard’s head. Only then did he notice a distant roar of ajet engine getting louder and louder. Until it was deafening. Almost instantly an advanced ground attack jet rocketed through the air above the building behind him, crashing into the building he was taking aim at in a fiery explosion.Instinctively Ramirez ducked behind the wrecked car once more. Shortly after an old era F16 blasted past him and the wrecked craft, Quickly climbing up into sky and disappearing the clouds above.
Peeking his head out, he watched as the damaged structure began to collapse on whats left of the grey chassis of the ground attack craft. Its tail was already missing. Its sturdy wings gone, and its cockpit crushed. Its glyph enhanced hull, disappearing into the falling debris of the building. The undead guard which had been there had no doubt been obliterated by the blast. Gripping his rifle tighter Ramirez continued his push towards the bridge.
The distinct crackle and pops of gunfire got louder and louder as he approached the bridge. Realising this, he began to stick close to the apartment block that flanked the narrow and approached. As he got closer to the bridge the sounds of battle got deafeningly loud. The crackle of rifles firing, defeaning booms of cannons going off and explosions landing were paired with the telltale sign of an engine rumbling, getting closer and closer. Hiding inside the apartment block now, he watched the empty street from the window, soon the high pitched screech of a turbocharged engine could be heard. A new generation MBT rumbled down the street. Its turret bore the eagle insignia of the 40th, its paint was heavily scratched and its flat turret had a large hole where the coaxial machine gun should be mounted. The glyphs on its hull were pitch black rather than the dim white shimmer it usually gives off. The high pitched screeching descended into a low rumble once more, the tank slowed but continued on its way towards the bridge.
“Heyo! Wait up!...” Jumping out from the building, and running to the centre of the street Ramirez yelled at the moving vehicle. The low rumbling of the engine wound down, as the vehicle jerked forward, stopping in its tracks. “Finally! You guys cannot believe…guys?!” The high pitched wiring of an electric motor, and the turret began to turn towards him.Its long barrel swiftly turned to face him. Something was wrong, and he knew it. Quickly jumping out of the way, a loud boom echoed through the street, the cannon had let loose a depleted uranium shell, sending it rocketing down the street and impacting a wrecked truck far down the road. The turret turned, its gun training itself on the wreck Ramirez was attempting to hide behind. Jumping and rolling over to another wrecked vehicle, he narrowly avoided the speedy projectile, as it blasted through the steel wreckage and cut through the reinforced concrete wall behind it, before quickly detonating in the apartment it had entered. Wrecking everything that was left behind after the evacuation. Running forward, and towards the vehicle Ramirez took out the grenades from his pockets and tore off a piece of his shirt, quickly stopping dead in his tracks. To Let another destructive projectile blast past him, and destroy another unfortunate ground floor apartment, behind him. Sprinting at full speed he ran parallel to the armoured vehicle. Making sure to strafe unpredictably, so as to make it as difficult as possible for the turret to track him.Tying the grenade together with his shirt to make a bundle. He sprinted towards the vehicle parked vehicle, sliding down, at the last second as the barrel finally met his gaze and let out a thunderous boom, the projectile missed him entirely but the sound of the cannon firing so close to him made his ears ring. Pulling the pin from one of the grenades. He chucked his makeshift explosive over the gunner’s hatch, before quickly dropping down on his belly and placing both his hands over his neck. The bundle of grenades exploded ringing through his ears once more. Getting to his feet. He quickly climbed onto the blown open gunner’s hatch and emptied a few rounds into the tank, before chucking one more grenade into the open hatch. Instantly killing whatever undead crew were left and destroying the controls.
Sitting on the side of the smoking vehicle, Ramirez breathed a sigh of relief, before grabbing his rifle and continuing down the road, thanking his lucky stars that its machine gun had been taken out.
The sounds of battle had died down, walking down the long bridge he heard the distant roar of jet engines.Looking up high above the city, trails of smoke punched holes into the grey cloud blanket, marking the paths of wreckages of aircraft on both sides falling from the skies . The road was still littered with bodies, and wrecked vehicles, their fires still crackling softly. Turning his gaze back forward, he realised he could now see the stadium. Gun fire poured out its sides in rapid, precise yellow streaks towards the ground below, quickly being returned by similar yellow streaks coming from the ground. Seeing this, he began to pick up the pace, breaking into jog towards the stadium. Knowing it is only a matter of time before his final retreat point falls or he gets left behind
Ramirez was in awe when he finally arrived at the stadium, corpses and wrecks created a wall of blood and steel around the stadium. The entrances were reinforced and barricaded. Quietly, climbed over the wall of debris and bodies.
“Halt!” A voice called from atop the stadium. Holding his hands up in the air, looked up at the soldier. His large calibre rifle was pointed straight at him. The Glyphs on his armour varied between a range of dimly glowing, to black and burnt out.
“ Whoa, whoa whoa,I’m Human, I’m human.” Ramirez yelled, the man lowered his rifle, before retreating into the stadium. Shortly after, the reinforced doors let out an ear wrenching screech as it was pulled open. Two soldiers in power armour stood at the doors, closing it once. Ramirez had entered the stadium. Their visors were down so their faces were completely concealed. The room inside was completely dark, turning almost pitch black once the doors were closed. The only light came through the entrance to the open pitch at the centre of the stadium where multiple large spacecraft had landed. they were heavy duty transport craft sent down by command to evacuate multiple tanks at a time. The sound of their jet engines drowned out everything else. But something seemed off; the area around the vehicles seemed awkwardly abandoned. Normally there would be soldiers scrambling round for ammo, medics treating the wounded. Soldiers shouting at others to hurry up and get on, but here there was none of that. Just 4 large spacecraft parked perfectly at the centre of the pitch.
“Corporal Ramirez, you made it.” A commander called. Walking towards him from the stands that were behind him. His uniform was soaked in blood. The emblem on its shoulder was that of the 40th. His rifle was slung round his shoulder. He put a shoulder round Ramriez, and began escorting the man towards the shuttles.
Ramirez bashed the commander's face with the butt of his rifle. Knocking the man to the ground and pointing his rifle at him.
“How do you know my name?” He yelled. Instantly, Ramirez fell onto the ground, dropping his gun in front of him His legs turning to jelly as the water was drained from them. The commander’s face flickered before revealing his true self, A green faced and large fanged orc. Behind him the 2 powered armour suits opened up to show 2 elven mages, the droplets of water being removed from Ramirez drawn into their hands forming a small ball of moisture.
“ Heh, when you have absorbed as many souls as I have…” The orc began, getting back onto his feet. “ You start to forgot who’s memories belong to who’s” He explained, kicking the rifle away from Ramirez who was crawling to grip on to it. Whilst fighting the immense pain of having one's entire body water content drained from them.
“You..you..bastard..” he muttered, breathing heavier and heavier, his face shrivelling up, becoming more and more wrinkled as the rest of the moisture left his body.
“ These humans have such spirit.” The archmage commented, absorbing his soul.
“Heh, they have as much spirit as they have mana.” One of the elves added
“ You elves are always so arrogant.”
“ Am I wrong? These soulless automata have less magical abilities than a new born baby.”
“ And yet your nation still lost to them.” The Orcish Archmage retorted, silencing the elf.
“I for one will not make the mistake of underestimating them. They may have no magical abilities but they sure as hell have spirit. Not to mention brains.” He said, picking up the rifle Ramirez dropped. “ The things these humans come up with…” He commented examining the weapon in his hands. “ Incredible, who would have thought they would use you like this my old rival.”He said,Tapping the shimmering glyphs on the gun, before shoving the rifle in the arms of one of the elves. “Take it, you'll need it.”
“Why would I need such an infernal contraption.” The elven mage yelled.
The Orc let out a sigh, “You elves never learn do you.” He muttered to himself, “ It’s up to you, don’t start complaining about honour when they start shooting you up there.”
“Up there?” The elf repeated, clearly confused about what this entails
“ Hais, up there!” the orc pointed at the sky. “ Where the humans are coming from, a station above the clouds, in an area they call space. Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed”
“ Proposterous, were these humans not just using their poor imitations of elven gliders?”
“ No wonder your people lost.” The Orc said, before raising his staff in the air, quickly, hordes of undead soldiers began pouring in from the various entrances into the pitch, falling in, in neat boxes in front of the large spacecraft.
“ S…Sir..O..ur s-s-quadron has e-e-entered h-h-hostile a-airspace.” A course raspy voice crackled over the Orc’s earpiece. It struggled to maintain its sentences, each word coming off with some pain in them.
“ Maintain your current heading squad leader, and hit those power plants with everything you’ve got.”
“ Understood sir.” It acknowledged,
Command had gotten one thing wrong about the Orcs: they did not feed on human flesh, they fed on human souls. Making all their experience, their memories and their skills a part of them. They had once done the same with the Elves and Dwarves, this had ignited a long and drawn out war between the Orcs and the 2 other races that had resulted in their defeat. From then on the Orcish population dropped tremendously, as their population starved with no souls to eat. So when humanity had arrived and the Elves and Dwarves united against them. The Orcs wasted no time in getting a share of the spoils. Though unlike the Elves and Dwarves the Orcs treated humanity differently. Since our emotions and memories represented flavours to them, each good memory was sweet, each bad one bitter, with each human emotion representing a different taste. With a combination of our captured VR technology and their souls magic they could have a human live out an entire fulfilling and happy life in the span of a few days before being harvested. But despite this, humans were still not forced into these VR machines. Determined to make as many good memories as possible, the Orcs gave humans under their rule a choice, live a long fulfilling happy life virtually, or live a short but comfortable one in the real world. Humans that chose the latter would be led to what was once the country of Japan. Where the Orcs, having absorbed the experiences and skills of architects, have reconstructed the entire country to be a paradise island. Where one's needs were always met as undead servants did your every bidding. Humans who chose neither and still resisted were harvested immediately.
Similar to the differences in human treatment, the Orcish archmage was unlike the Elven and Dwarven one. He was not a brawler,or a frontline fighter he more resembled a tactician, a general. As the Elven and Dwarven archmage charged to their deaths. He opted to stay hidden, raising legions of undead to push into the humans and absorbing the souls of high ranking officers and captured scientists to learn of our command structures, our cultures and most importantly, our tactics.
Still unknown to high command this looming threat has deceived them into giving him exactly what he needs to bring down humanity. Equipment. Now with these new craft high command was so kind as to bestow upon him. He would strike humanity at the heart, taking control of high commands precious station absorb their souls and make humanity his puppet. Previous

2023.02.02 16:39 greg0525 The Mysterious Disappearance of the Flannan Isles Lighthouse Keepers
As with every year, there were events in 1900 that some people remember. If nothing else, history preserves their memory. For example, there was the steamer Sir Walter Scott, which, from its launch in 1900, provided many enjoyable moments for cruisers on Loch Katrine. The steamer was a large and luxurious vessel, with enough room to comfortably accommodate all of its passengers. Also long remembered was Queen Victoria’s ceremonial visit to Balmoral Castle in Aberdeen. The castle was draped in banners and flags, and the queen was greeted by a cheering crowd.
Or the gruesome disappearance of three sailors at Flannan Isles lighthouse. The lighthouse was a lonely and isolated place, and the sailors were never seen again. Their disappearance remains a mystery to this day.
The captain could barely see anything beyond the window. The storm was battering the waves against the ship. Rain was pelting the glass so hard it sounded like hail, and the ship was creaking and groaning under the strain. Although the sailors were experienced, they had never felt being so close to death in their lives. If the waves had been stronger, the steamer might have been swept out to sea. But it was not the weather which was the captain’s only concern: he was looking for the light, but could not find it. Nothing could have been worse than hitting a rock. The lighthouse at Flamman Island had no light.
‘What the hell is wrong with it?’ he asked himself.
Standing there on the deck, no word could leave the sailors’ mouths. But they were sure that something was definitely wrong. Something sinister was out there. The captain had a bad feeling about it, like a cold hand on his heart. He had to find the light, or they were all going to die.
When the ship successfully docked in Leith on 18 December 1900, the fault report was forwarded to the Northern Lighthouse Board, which was responsible for the maintenance of the lighthouse. To find out and repair the fault, three men were sent to the island from Lewis and arrived there from Breasclete on 26 December. The tower was operated by three men, James Ducat, Thomas Marshall and Donald McArthur.
Captain Jim Harvie asked when he noticed that the flag was missing from the pole on their arrival, “Hmm, that’s strange. Where the hell is the flag?”
His voice held a note of apprehension as if he sensed that something was wrong. He might have felt unconscious if he knew that sinister, dark forces surrounded the island.
On arrival, the crew found that the flag was missing from the pole, the boxes containing the usual supplies had been left at the mooring station to be refilled, and, more ominously, none of the lighthouse keepers was there to greet them ashore. The captain of the Hesperus tried to reach them by blowing the ship’s whistle and firing a flare but was unsuccessful. A sense of foreboding and unease settled over the ship and its crew as they realized that something was very wrong. The captain of the ship, Jim Harvie, had a feeling that something was not right when they arrived at the island and the flag was missing from the pole. He might have felt that dark, sinister forces were at work.
A boat was launched and Joseph Moore, alone, was put ashore. As he was approaching the buildings, he was getting more nervous. He did not know what to expect. The only thing which eased his nervousness was the light breeze on his face. When he arrived, he found that the flag was missing, the boxes containing the usual supplies had been left, and the lighthouse keepers were not there to greet them. The captain tried to reach them but was unsuccessful. He found both the camp’s front gate and the front door locked, the beds unmade, and the clock stopped. The kitchen utensils were all very clean, a sign that they had left sometime after dinner. After returning to port with the bad news, he went back to the lighthouse with two other sailors of Hesperus. A further search revealed that the lights had been cleaned and refilled. They also found a set of oilskins (a special waterproof cloth used during that time), which suggested that one of the guards had left the lighthouse without wearing them. Other than that, there was no sign of either of them, either in the lighthouse or on the island.
Moore and three volunteer sailors were left on the island to look after the lighthouse, and the Hesperus returned to Lewis. Captain Harvie submitted a telegram to the Northern Lighthouse Board on 26 December 1900, writing:
There has been a terrible accident at Flannans. The three guards, the Ducat, the Marshall and the Occasional were missing from the island… The clocks stopped and other signs indicated that the accident may have happened about a week ago. Poor guys, they must have fallen off the rocks or drowned trying to secure a crane.
Meanwhile, people combed every corner of the island for clues to the guards’ fate. They found that everything was intact on the east coast, but on the west coast, they found signs of damage from recent storms. They also found the scattered remains of a broken crate; iron railings were bent, the railroad track along the trail was torn out of the concrete, and a large boulder had shifted.
On 29 December 1900, Robert Muirhead, the council’s inspector, arrived on the island to conduct an official investigation. He inspected the clothing left behind at the lighthouse and concluded that Ducat and Marshall had gone down to West Harbour and McArthur had left the lighthouse in a single shirt during the heavy rain.
‘Whoever was the last person to leave the lighthouse unattended was in violation of the rules. And the West Harbor was in a disastrous condition that I cannot describe in words. Well, they must have been swept away by the sea,’ – the inspector concluded.
Further theories have been put forward about the strange entries in a statement diary found in the lighthouse. Marshall wrote on 12 December that “it was the strongest wind I have ever seen in twenty years.”
But he also reported that Ducat was very quiet and Donald McArthur was crying and upset several times. This was odd because McArthur was a sailor famous for his bar fights and not afraid of anything, so it was odd that a storm would make him cry. The next day, according to his diary entries, the storm was still raging and the three men were praying. This was puzzling because all three men were experienced lighthouse keepers who knew they were in a secure structure 100 metres above sea level and should have known they were safe inside. In addition, there were no storms reported in the area on December 12, 13 and 14. But if there were no storms, what caused the devastation of West Harbour? The last log entry was reportedly made on December 15 and read.
“The storm is over, the sea is calm. God is overall.”
In 2020, however, journalist Mike Dash concluded that the diary entries were fictional and that they were made up to sensationalise the story.
The bodies of the three sailors were never found. And, of course, improbable explanations were offered, such as that a sea serpent (or giant seabird) had taken the men; they might have been under the influence of mermaids or sirens. Or that they had acquired a ship to sail away and start a new life somewhere else; or that they had been kidnapped by foreign spies; also, that they had been ill-fated by the malevolent spirits of a ghost ship. In any case, the incident was still remembered years later.
Others suggest, however, that McArthur may have seen the large waves approaching the island and, knowing that his colleagues were likely to be in danger, he jumped down from the tower to warn his companions, only to be swept away by the violent wave that reached the shore.
Research by historian James Love recently revealed that Marshall had previously been fined five shillings when his equipment was washed away during a powerful hurricane. It is likely that to avoid another fine, he and Ducat tried to secure their equipment during the storm and were consequently swept away by the wind. McArthur presumably suffered the same fate. Love believes that McArthur was probably in a hurry to warn or help his colleagues and was also swept away by the wind. This theory explains why they did not wear oilskins or jackets. But not why the gate was closed. Another theory is based on the first-hand experience of Walter Aldebert, who was the keeper of the lighthouse from 1953 to 1957. He believed that one of them may indeed have been swept out to sea and then tried to help two of his companions, but they too were swept away by the waves.
An additional explanation is based on psychology. McArthur is said to have had an impulsive nature; this may have led to him starting a fight on one of the rocks, which caused all three men to fall to their deaths. But some say one of the men went mad, murdered the other two, dumped their bodies in the sea, and jumped to his death.
In isolated places, loneliness can take its toll on even the most resilient. The mind may wander in solitude, and the silence can be deafening. Isolation can have an incalculable effect on people; we may not even think about how solitude can shape our personalities. Some people may even go to extremes in despair and desperation because the lack of human interaction can be maddening.

2023.02.02 08:47 Appropriate-Jump4919 Question about The Loop.
I had a phone screening about a week ago for Assistant Store Manager II - Fresh store..
In this screening I had met with a district manager, it all went well. Good dude .. and I got an invite to the final interviews - The Loop.. I noticed the 3 people doing my LOOP is that same district manager, the bar raiser and someone from HR. (HR could realistically be the raiser too, because I’m assuming about the other guy, his linked-in lists him as a bar raiser, but he’s in charge of the west coast fresh locations)
My question, is this normal? I assumed it would be different people .. not the same person as my initial.. is HR normally part of this loop? I’m going to prepare like it’s normal, don’t want to assume it’s going to be easier because I’ve already given this guy 3 behavior questions.. lol. Thanks guys
I’d also appreciate any pointers

First Friday Fractals is the spectacular, award-winning full dome planetarium show that takes viewers on a tour of the fractals in nature and zooms through infinitely complex mathematical fractals. Featuring original music, the show is both educational and highly entertaining, and suitable for audiences 3 and up. A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop. Driven by recursion, fractals are images of dynamic systems – the pictures of Chaos. Geometrically, they exist in between our familiar dimensions. Fractal patterns are extremely familiar, since nature is full of fractals. For instance: trees, rivers, coastlines, mountains, clouds, seashells, hurricanes, etc. Abstract fractals – such as the Mandelbrot Set – can be generated by a computer calculating a simple equation over and over. 2023.02.02 07:25 genericusername7890 Four Longest Journies
Hi all. I've been playing the game on and off for a year or so now, and finally bought the final DLC, Iberia. I still have 50 cities to go, Barcelona is the only one I've gotten so far(the way I Play the game is weird, I haven't even gotten into the business side, I just like discovering new cities and getting all of them.)
But my one goal after that, and before I start getting into the business part, is I want to do the longest deliveries possible in all 8 directions. I was thinking Saint Petersburg to Lisbon, Aberdeen to Constantinople, Catania to Bergen and Brest to Iasi; the map's width isn't long enough to go in a relatively straight line east to west, and I want to keep them relatively straight for fun, so the last one isn't nearly as long. Also I'll go either way on those trips, I was just listing one possibility, either direction is fine to me.
Has anyone done anything similar to this, and do you guys have any recommendations or changes?

“It has to be more than that.”
“Ten minutes, and then the FBI shows up,” said Rich Christiansen. He opened the Buick’s glove compartment and grabbed two billfolds.
“No way,” said Samuel Idestam with a shake of his head. He took the billfold Christiansen offered him. Opening it, he scanned over the ID card inside. Idestam snapped it shut and slid it into his coat pocket. “Why do I have to be ‘Jefferson’ again?”
“Because you were Jefferson last time, kiddo. Helps you remember your alias, build a character, not get us caught out, that sort of thing.”
Idestam checked his wristwatch. “Fine, ten minutes. Starting now.”
“Starting two minutes ago,” said Christiansen as he opened his door and stepped out. Idestam followed his senior as they stepped behind the car. Christiansen popped open the trunk, grabbed the single, black briefcase inside, and slammed the trunk shut. “Let’s go.”
Wind kicked through the parking garage. Debris scattered and danced in the cold air around the men while they walked to an elevator. Few other cars sat on the gray concrete. Yellow lights harshly glared down on the pair.
Idestam eyed a nearby car as they waited for the elevator to arrive. “Is that a Rolls Royce?”
“Who cares?” Christiansen stepped into the elevator without giving the car a look.
Idestam joined him. “Ground floor, right?”
Idestam keyed the elevator. “I think that was a Rolls Royce. I never figured scientists would make that much.”
“Maybe he’s a Russian spy,” Christiansen muttered.
Idestam scoffed. “It’s been decades since the Soviet Union. I doubt they can even leave Europe right now, let alone come to the West Coast.”
Christiansen shrugged. “It made things a lot more interesting back when they could.”
The elevator gave a soft ring and slid to a stop. Stepping out, a harsher, quicker wind welcomed the men. This time, it nipped through their dress clothes and bit at anything exposed. The cold of night punished them as they left the relative cover of the parking garage. Above the men, city lights drowned out any possibility of a night sky.
“Four minutes,” warned Christiansen.
“We didn’t put money on it.”
“We should have,” Christiansen said. A short walk across the street brought them to the brick and glass walls of the Lush River Research Center. A small bronze statue of a space shuttle stood proudly next to the double doors. The entryway welcomed them in with a warm gust of air from vents above the door as they walked inside. A short man waiting by an empty receptionist desk clapped and walked up towards them. A nametag clipped to his tweed sweater vest said ‘Doctor R. Swan.’
“Gentlemen, good to see you’ve made it. Right this way, please,” Dr. Swan motioned to an elevator bank set in the wall beyond the reception area. “I must admit, I’m surprised to hear the Federal Bureau of Investigation has an interest in our findings.”
Christiansen smiled and pulled his billfold out of his jacket. His New England accent slurred into a perfect, Deep South tone of voice without warning.“Actually, Doctor, we’re with the United States Postal Service.” He flashed the badge tucked within the billfold. “Security and Insurance Division. I’m Agent Jensen and this is Agent Jefferson.”
Dr. Swan furrowed his brow and cocked his head to one side. “Oh. Um, okay then. What would the post office do with a radio telescope’s research, if I may ask?”
“Well…” Christiansen put away the billfold and tucked his thumbs into his belt loops. “The broadcast affected a few of our parcel planes’ navigation systems. We just want to be able to troubleshoot this. We take great pride in being able to ship the mail without any problems. Neither snow nor rain, you know.”
Dr. Swan chuckled and shifted on one foot. “Ah, yes. Of course. I’m so sorry to hear that. I didn’t think the signal was that strong. But, that just goes to show what a momentous discovery thi--”
Idestam interrupted. “Do you have the data of the signal here? Telemetry, recordings, anything else that may help us… fix things?”
“No, not here, actually. I tried to explain to the federal agent who called, but she was very excited and merely wanted to meet. It’s all still at the actual telescope. Dr. Calvin is there now. He’s a bit eccentric, but given the news we’re all happy to burn the midnight oil. He left me some rough notes we can go over.”
“No, that’s all right. What’s the address? We’ll go and speak with him.”
Dr. Swan firmed his jaw, glowered, and stalked around to the back of the reception desk. Taking a post-it note, he scribbled down the address and handed it across to the men. Christiansen took it and nodded.
“Just follow the freeway, and take the third right after the Slick-n-Pick station. It’s a bit of a long road. I always say that right when you feel like you’ve gone up the wrong road, you’ll see the facility. But of course, no one listens to what the museum director says. The one time I allow some after-hours exploration and suddenly the entire Stars and Stripes wants to talk to our resident retiree…” Dr. Swan’s voice trailed off.
“Thank you, really,” said Christiansen.
Idestam checked over his shoulder. Outside, two figures in black suits crossed the windy street. He leaned over the desk and stuck out his hand to Dr. Swan. “Yes, thank you for your help. We’ll be going.”
Christiansen looked at Idestam for a moment before turning around. Idestam followed him outside. Neither man acknowledged the official-looking pair who tramped past them towards. The newcomers walked with an air of confidence. Their shoes clipped and echoed on the pavement.
Once past them, Christiansen spoke in a hushed tone. “Told you. Ten minutes.”
“How’d you figure?”
“Been on the job long enough. Every once and a while, some government drone will get overly invested into being a nuisance. It goes on for a little while until their bosses notice the waste of resources or they fall from a tall building. And, we have a man in almost every branch of the FBI. Got a call that their flight was landing just ten minutes after ours.”
“That’s cheating,” protested Idestam as they got in the parking garage elevator.
“Is not. Besides, that was the same call that gave us the job.”
“Why’d you shake that man’s hand?”
Idestam shrugged. The elevator opened to reveal one more car in the parking garage. He produced the key to the rental car from his pocket. “Just being friendly. He’d remember us more if we were rude.”
“No, he’ll remember you if you are anything. Friendliness is just as memorable as hostility. The point is to be neutral, monotone, baseline. Nothing he can easily recall if asked.”
“He’ll remember us if we speak like robots,” said Idestam.
“Get in the damn car.”
The drive to the telescope proved uneventful. Leaving the city and journeying into the flatlands outside, light waned around them and a soft night sky appeared. Glimmering pinpoints of white sparkled above them. An occasional car broke the monotony of the open road. The headlights flew towards them as two beams before whipping by and disappearing.
Idestam looked over after a few minutes of silence. “So, what’s the plan? Spill a cup of coffee on the keyboard when we get there or something?”
“Some sort of accident, I suppose,” said Christiansen. “We’ll make polite conversation, you distract whoever is there, and I’ll just see what needs to be done with their discovery.”
“Do we need to get a recording of it?” Asked Idestam.
“We weren’t asked to. I’m going to assume the Office has what it needs already and we’re just on clean up.”
“But this is definitely a burst?”
Christiansen shrugged. “Potentially. When I took the call, they couldn’t say. But, I’ve seen bursts play out like this before. Something somewhere gets through the fence and plays in our yard for a bit.”
“What’s the worst one you’ve seen?”
“Dayton, Texas. A good many years back. The Office fucked that one up pretty bad.”
“I think I heard about tha--”
Christiansen pointed over the dashboard. “There’s that gas station. Slick-n-Pick.”
“Yeah, I see it. Only thing around for miles.” Idestam turned the car. The gas station’s neon sign stuck out amongst the dark landscape of trees and lone houses. “No one died at Dayton, though, right? Couldn’t be that bad.”
“No, but it got plenty of attention. That’s almost worse. A body is in the news for a week. A court case is a journalist’s paycheck for at least half a year.”
“At least there weren’t any deaths.”
“Could have been.” Christiansen shrugged again. “I worked with Artemis on it. Told him and his partner it would have been easier to just off the three witnesses, but he got all moral about it. He had a point, there being a kid and all, but… the forest for the trees.”
Idestam shot raised eyebrows at Christiansen. “Jesus. Is it really that common? Killing anyone in our way?”
Christiansen sneered slightly and stared through his door’s window. “No, but sometimes I think I’m the only one who takes the job seriously. There are times we can’t bribe, trick, or discredit someone. If a burst slips a miracle cure into the mind of a nun, you think we can blackmail her to stay quiet? No, she’s going to think the Big Guy came down and gave it to her personally. People like that often pass away in their sleep. Protecting the American people from the Signal is more important than one person’s livelihood, or life.”
“Even for a ‘miracle cure’? What if it was for cancer?” asked Idestam.
Christiansen reached into his coat and pulled a small cardboard packet out. “Gum?” He held it up to Idestam.
“I’m fine, thanks.” Idestam frowned.
Christiansen produced a silvery tab and tucked the packet away. He cocked his head to one side while unwrapping the gum. “Can’t trust the bursts. Anytime the Signal cuts through into our reality, we don’t know why. Sure, maybe for some reason the cure to cancer gets dropped into Sister Mary’s noggin. Purely at random, she gets the cure and the Catholic Church gets to go on healing people and remaining relevant for at least another century. But, what if the Signal is malignant? Hostile? Her drug or therapy cures the cancer, but in exchange you lose free will or something. Can’t trust the Signal’s bursts.”
“It’s been so long and we still can’t figure out what they are?” asked Idestam.
Christiansen smacked his lips a few times as he started on the gum. “Kid, just what is it they taught you during orientation?”
“It was drinking from a fire hose, to be honest. But that’s why I’m training under you, right?”
“Training is one word for it. You think we missed a turn back there?”
A tall, concrete building appeared on the dark horizon. A wooden signboard next to the parking lot entrance welcomed them to the ‘Lush River Radio Telescope Experience’. As Idestam slowed down and entered, he noticed only one other car parked there. Beyond it, the lit windows cast a yellow glow on the parking lot.
“All right. We probably have more time here. There’s no telling if the feds will want to come out here late at night.” Christiansen scanned the building with his eyes before exiting the rental car.
“Yeah, working this late would be crazy,” said Idestam as he followed the senior agent up the path to the front door.
“Easy, kiddo,” warned Christiansen. He approached the front door and pulled a handkerchief out. Using it, he tried to open the door. It creaked and revealed a softly-lit interior. The doorway opened up to a small lobby with a coat rack and a card table with brochures on it. A few chairs lined the wall opposite of the table. A placard on the wall announced the place’s hours of operation. It should have been closed hours ago. Christiansen took a small step inside and looked around the interior. His head slowly swiveled left and right. “Okay, no cameras. So far, so good. Wood veneer walls, also good. We may need to burn the place down.”
“Okay, that’s plan B. Let me take point on this one.”
“No, you had the last job. Just follow my lead. Training, right?”
“Right.” Idestam rolled his eyes. “Training.”
Christiansen walked past the table. He ignored a little bell set on it with a ‘Ring for Service’ placard. The door beyond the table proved to be unlocked, and he swung it open with ease. Christiansen poked his head through and called out “Hello?”
From inside, Idestam heard a startled “Hello? Who’s there? Agent Kaunis?”
Christiansen smiled at Idestam and waved to him, before entering the room himself. He whipped out his billfold and let it fall open. Light glinted off the badge inside. Christiansen’s voice morphed again into a southern drawl. Vowels stretched in each word as he took up a twang accent. “Ah. No, sir. Postal Inspection Service. We were told you got a radar ping of some kind?”
The room circled around itself. A walkway around the outer wall passed by numerous computers and desks. In the center, a small metal walkway rose up to a platform. An older man with a cheap, ill-fitting toupee stood on the platform in front of a computer desk. “Radio broadcast, gentlemen. I apologize for not meeting you at the door. I wasn’t aware that the… post office would take interest.” He started to descend the stairs, but Christiansen raised a hand.
The agents closed the distance between them and the stairs. Christian braced himself on the railings installed on either side of the stairs. “That’s all right, sir. It’s just your little radio play up there,” Christiansen waved a hand towards the computer behind the scientist. “It’s got our planes and helicopters grounded and making a terrible mess of their electronics.”
“Oh, that’s just a play-by-play. The full thing is being recorded on the computers over there,” the scientist nodded his head towards a bank of computer screens.
Christiansen followed the man’s motion with raised eyebrows. “Really? That right there is what’s causing all our trouble? What is the thing behind you, then?” He asked with a voice of piqued curiosity. He began to ascend the stairs towards the scientist. The man excitedly welcomed Christiansen up and beckoned him to approach the monitor.
“Think of it like a window to peer in on whatever signal we’re seeing. Or listening to, rather. I asked them to set the place up like this when we first built the array and the administration got rid of the actual telescope we had here. Makes me feel a bit like the philosophers in the days of old, you know? Watching the stars. Listening, in this case.”
Idestam stood at the foot of the stairway as Christiansen made a point of fawning over the computer screen. Idestam’s hand flew to his holster when the scientist picked up a black object from the table. It was a pair of headphones. He carefully relaxed and hid the weapon holster inside his jacket again. Checking the ceiling, Idestam realized there were no cameras in the observatory anywhere. Part of him felt lucky, but a cold pit began to form in Idestam’s stomach. He kept an eye on the scientist.
“Here, try this on. You can hear what it sounds like through these,” the scientist leaned forward and tried to slide the headphones onto Christiansen. Christiansen ducked back and pushed the headset away.
“Thank you, Doctor…” Christiansen checked the nametag on the scientist’s jacket. “...Calvin. But I don’t need to do that. So this computer here isn’t recording the broadcast?”
“No, just that one down there. It actually has one of those new CD-ROMs that we can use to save it. I plan to burn several copies for when we arrange a press conference.”
“You haven’t told the news yet?”
Dr. Calvin shook his head. His fingers drummed on the headset slowly. “No, I want the full thing to be ready. There’s no telling how much is left. I called Agent Kaunis after the first transmission, since she’s taken an interest in my past work. But, then it restarted. And it’s all different from the first part. I’m letting it complete before I make any more phone calls. I didn’t think to really call anyone else. Not even the… post office. I apologize.”
“Please, Doctor, we’re happy being the unsung heroes. Well, it’s recording right now.” Christiansen clapped his hands and examined his surroundings. “Down there. And surely you must have written down the coordinates or frequency or what have you?”
“Ah, again, all on the computer. I did write out a brief description of it for my colleagues but everything else is electronic.” Dr. Calvin nodded reassuringly. He glanced between Idestam and Christiansen.
“Description?” Christiansen slowed his syllables in a questioning tone. He mirrored the doctor’s head nods and shakes while maintaining perfect eye contact.
“Just what the machines told us at first. I’ve never seen a Fourier decomposition quite like this. At this point, it’s all conjecture,” shrugged Dr. Calvin. “I believe there were few patterns in it, and I could not help but hypothesize. This could be a new chapter in history aft--”
“I take it you listened to this thing?” Christiansen interrupted. The faux southern drawl dried out of his words and betrayed a cold, monotone clip. His native Yankee accent didn’t return immediately.
“It was beautiful. Like a chorus of ang--”
“You listened to it,” nodded Christiansen.
“It’s the first broadcast from out there,” protested Dr. Calvin. “I had to know.”
“Well, it’s fortunate you’re up here,” said Christiansen. The senior agent checked around himself and wiped his palms on the sides of his jacket.
“Anyone would be fortunate enough to hear it. And soon, we can share it with the whole world. You yourselves are fortunate to be here.” The scientist smiled at the men.
Christiansen’s arm shot up and grabbed the man by the back of the neck. “Yeah, saves the poison we’d normally use, I guess.” Without another word, the senior agent tripped the man with one foot over his leg. He followed through and hurled the researcher over the top of the railing. Idestam flinched as the old man gave a short cry and hit the floor below them. A dark puddle spattered out from underneath Dr. Calvin upon impact.
Idestam slowly turned from the murder scene before him to Christiansen. He turned his palms outwards as he glared at the senior agent. “Goddamnit, he was innocent.”
“No, he wasn’t. You heard him: ‘Entire world will hear’ and bullshit. Can’t have that.”
“I mean… Can’t we call the Office and ask for, I dunno, blackmail or something?”
Christiansen shook his head. “A scientist like that doesn’t go quietly. Blackmail wouldn’t work. Besides, an old man working late in unsafe conditions like this? Accidents happen.”
“There’s a safety rail.” Idestam pointed two fingers at the steel pipe on the edge of the walkway.
“Yeah, that’s why I put my whole body into it. It’s a fluid motion, kid. The trick is to use your foot as an anchor and then push your hip to--”
“No, that’s not-- what the hell?”
“We’ll deal with this later. Those agents are bound to show up at any point. Help me find the computer.”
Idestam looked back down. The scientist weakly twisted in place. His face slowly formed a tortured expression. Words formed on the man’s lips without sound.
“Kid, come on.” Christiansen walked back down the stairs towards the computer banks. Idestam followed him after one more glance down to Dr. Calvin. The computers whirred and hummed. Lights danced on and off on various panels. Christiansen stopped at a blinking computer screen. A message on it announced the progress of a recording.
“This looks like it.” Christiansen cracked his knuckles and began typing. “Give me a second. Watch the door.”
“Yeah, sure,” muttered Idestam. He kept an eye on the door for a moment, before giving a side eye to the body on the floor. The scientist shifted uncomfortably in his own blood. The man still said nothing and stared at the ceiling. “So, two FBI agents are going to come here and find a dead man and no recording.”
“And no coordinates,” said Christiansen. He remained hunched
over the computer while talking. It beeped and chirped in response to the commands the agent gave it. “They’ll find nothing of use.”
“Except a dead man,” repeated Idestam.
“That’s not enough for the Bureau to open an investigation. It’d have to start locally. These two aren’t on an official case, anyway. Our man in their office said the expense report came through without a case file or justification.”
“I wonder how they’ll get away with that,” said Idestam.
“Who knows? Friends in high places. Others with eccentric interests. Office politics is a boon and a bane. There we go,” Christiansen stood up. Taking a cloth from his jacket, he wiped down the keyboard. “No recording. No more logs of where the telescope’s been pointing for the past few weeks. And, it’s now going to point elsewhere.” He looked at Idestam and stuck a thumb to a small door in the wall. A neon exit sign cast red hues over its metal frames. “Let’s get going.”
Idestam followed behind Christiansen, mute. The transition from artificial light inside to darkness outside came almost as a relief. Idestam took a deep breath of the crisp night air while they trudged to the car. Still only one other car sat in the parking lot. The buzzing fluorescent light pole on the parking lot’s edge forced the car to cast a long shadow. Idestam could almost make out a bumper sticker on the compact car. My Child is an Honor Student at… He looked away.
“Keys. I’ll drive,” Christiansen said, with a hand outstretched. Idestam fished the rental keys out of his pocket and handed them over. He stared at the entrance of the building. Even as he opened the car door and sat inside, Idestam stared. Part of him wished the scientist, Dr. Calvin, would come walking outside. He knew the doctor wouldn’t be walking any time soon, if at all.
“Where to now?” Idestam asked quietly as they pulled out of the lot.
“I saw a frozen yogurt place on our way into town earlier. Come on, kid. We’ll get some, call the Office, and then find a place to sleep tonight.”
Idestam nodded. He turned to watch the outside world scrawl past as they drove. The stars dimly blinked from their places in the night sky. An occasional tree eclipsed his view for a moment. No sound came from outside. Idestam’s ears filled with the hum of car tires on the earth below him.
Hello! This short story is from my fictional work "A Familiar Darkness" and is a standalone story. Think of this as like The X-Files' monster-of-the-week episode, with the main storyline being available on my profile.

2023.02.01 23:46 RazTheExplorer The Chronicles of An Al Mazrah Taxi Driver - Part 6
The sound of LTV engines wakes me up yet again, and I groan. “Can’t these operators let a taxi driver sleep in for once!” I mutter, and I shuffle over to the window, expecting to see yet another smoking hunk of junk being abandoned in front of my apartment building. However, the sight I see instead brings a huge smile out from under my mustache as I throw open the window and look down. An immaculately clean, all black LTV with a small Canadian flag in the window was backed up to the loading dock, and a guy in an orange puffer jacket hopped out and slung an equally clean Bryson 800 across his back.
“Aye, Dutch! You made it!” I yelled out. He looked up, gave me a salute, and grabbed a milk crate off the back seat. I grabbed my uniform, threw it on, and ran down all seven flights of stairs to the lobby. Sophia was handing Dutch his keys, and he turned and held out his hand. “Hey boss” he said, and I shook his hand and replied “Damn Dutch, you smell like Taraq Village on garbage day. Where you been living, in a dumpster?” With a quick laugh and a VERY Canadian “sorry” he grabbed his stuff and headed towards the stairs. “Appreciate the new digs, Raz. I’m going to get freshened up and I’ll be back out there” he said. “See you on the road, Dutch” I said, winked and blew Sophia a kiss, and headed out towards my day.
With a quick thought about stealing Dutch’s LTV and blowing it up in the marshlands just for laughs, I jumped behind the wheel of mine and headed out for another day on the job. After my normal resupply route, I’m flush with gas cans and on the lookout for operators who need a ride. A quick loop through Sarrif Bay turned up empty, even though I could see the UAV tower online, so I moved on. As I got back on the highway, I spotted a solo operator running on the shoulder, so I moved in to offer my services.
“CATCH A RIDE!”
“Yo buddy, you need a RIDE!” I called out over comms, and watched the operator immediately break right and dive into the bushes. I pulled over nearby and saw a brief red flash on comms. “Hey man, you can come out. I’m a friendly. My name’s Raz, owneoperator of Al Mazrah Taxi Service. You need a ride?” I hopped out and tapped the fresh new logo on the side of the car. “See, I’m unarmed, and here to help. Seriously, you can come out. Kind of weird that you’re still in there. I can see that sniper rifle. It’s like seven feet long, man.” The comms crackled. “Wait, you’re a taxi driver? What does that even mean, dude?” he said and suddenly I saw a Marine helmet pop out among the leaves. “It means I’ve got this fancy ride right here, and a promise that I’ll get you there, or I’ll die trying. You in or out, my friend?” I popped an invite and waited. Only two ways out of this now.
I’m part of a new squad, and my greenhorn walks out of the foliage, still obviously wary of the entire situation. We hop in the car and formulate our next move. “Ok man, let’s ride. What are we working on out here in Al Mazrah?” I ask. I hear a shuffling of a backpack, and he pulls out his tablet. “Well, I have to earn and then spend $60,000 at a buy station. I’ve been working on this mission forever” he said. “Any place that we can grab some cash quickly?” I leaned out the window and scanned the skies. I spot a few parachutes in the air, and said “Well my friend, it seems the skies have answered your prayers. Buckle up, we’re off on the hunt for some cash!” I laugh as I see him attempt to zipper up his pack as I turn the LTV off the pavement and aim straight for a plume of red smoke in the distance. “Next stop, supply drop!” I exclaim, and we slide to a stop next to a large crate. “Jump out and see what’s what. I’ll keep watch” I say, and I move into a defensive circle pattern. I see a Vaznev hit the dirt, and my customer headed back to the vehicle. “Well that was awesome, driver! Check out this RAAL man, this thing is HUGE! I got a ton of cash too. Can we hit a buy station?” he asked. “You’re the boss, my friend. I’m just the driver. I’ve already got a route to the best one.” I head off towards my ping, but I’m taking a detour. I’ve been in Al Mazrah for a while, and one trend I’ve noticed is that most days, no operators seem to go after these supply drops. Only one plane drops them, and they are usually conveniently lined up for easy pickings.
We pull up to the next drop, and it’s in the best possible location for a taxi driver. In the parking lot of an unguarded gas station, right next to the highway. Couldn’t plan this better if I tried, so I pull up to the pumps and my customer heads into the red smoke. I’m watching the fuel gauge rise, when suddenly there’s someone in black body armor climbing onto the car. “Whoa, hey, who are you, buddy?” I exclaim. “You need a ride?” I get no response, but he’s not shooting. I decide to take a gamble, as my current customer is busy with the supply drop. I jump out of the LTV and immediately throw out an invite to our squad, figuring that it’ll either work, or that my customer will uncork that widowmaker of a RAAL to avenge my execution. Surprisingly, we get a new squad member and I hear “hey, what’s going on, who’s that guy!?” and the ear-shattering thunder of the RAAL erupts from behind the crate. A couple of the rounds ping off our new friend, but no harm, no foul. “Cease fire, Rambo! He’s on our side now” I yell, thanking my lucky stars I wore my headphones today. “Where did he come from” the greenhorn asks, but without any response on comms from the new guy, I honestly have no idea. “He’s with us now, friend, so let’s hit that buy station and get you boys to safety.” We jump back in the car, and our new mute friend joins us. Checking my tablet, I can see that he does have a mic connected, but who am I to judge. If you don’t want to talk, that’s cool.
I roll out towards the buy station, swerving through Ahmed’s neighborhood specifically to plaster a few of his cronies for laughs. I drift back out to the main road, and I’m almost at the buy station when I spot another plume of red smoke over on the beach. “You boys got time for one more supply crate?” I ask, and I peel off towards it. I spot some AQ in a house nearby, but having already heard the thunder from my squad, I figure that the second time he lets that thing loose, he’ll hit something with it, so I press on. They both jump out and I introduce the first wave of AQ to my ride with a satisfying thump, and circle back to see how my customers are doing. The area is getting hot quick, and bullets are starting to ping off my windshield. These guys are still huddled around the crate like they found Scooter’s porno stash, so I lay on the horn and yell “ok boys, we need to go NOW!” They get the message as they start to get beamed with shotgun shells from a nearby rooftop, and they hop in the LTV and I drop the hammer.
We roll up to the buy station on the west side of Sa’id City and they both jump out to spend some of the plethora of cash they’ve got. My original customer finishes his $60k mission, and he’s outfitted with a new three plate vest, an airstrike, a self revive, a larger backpack, and a ton of plates. Our mute companion probably bought something too, but I have no idea what his goals are, so I focus on what’s next. “Ok gents, the Chemist blew his joint yet again, so I’m recommending we head over to the nearest exfil and get you guys on a bird back home. Thoughts?” I pinged the exfil point on the hills near the caves, and it’s agreed that exfil is the play. We race through the hillside towns and I take the goat path known only to the most talented drivers of Al Mazrah, and we’re at the flare in no time. The flash of green lights the sky, and I back up against the hillside, ready to bug out if things get too spicy. Soon, the bird is in view, and it touches down in the clearing. My customers hop out and jump on, and I jump out of the LTV and head over to expedite their ride out.
“Raz, you’re an absolute legend. Thanks so much for all the help. I spent most of my cash finishing my mission, but this $18,000 will do you better than reducing my insurance premium, man!” And without hesitation, he threw the duffle bag off the ramp down into the sand. “Dude, NOOOO! Don’t do that. Money is no use to me, my friend! Why did you do that?” I yell feverishly. “Grab it, quick!” The chopper is lifting off, our mute friend waves goodbye, and I think “damn, it’s too late!” I have about a second to think about the good fortune the next operator to exfil will feel when they find a big bag of cash, when I hear a sound I never imagined I’d hear. A parachute opens right above me, and my customer lands right next to me and grabs the duffle bag.
“Dude, what the hell are you doing back down here!” I yelled, half furious, half amazed. “Do you not see that huge ominous cloud of lightning and death steamrolling this way?” His face was somewhere between fear and confusion. “I mean, you said you weren’t going to take it. It’s like 18 grand, dude. Not going to let that go to waste.” I rested my head on the side of the LTV with a dull thump. “Get. In. The. Car.” I said with a sigh. I watched the green smoke dissipate and checked the map. “Only one more option now, friend. Final exfil is at the quarry. Hope you still have some rounds in that RAAL.”
I straight sent it off the cliff and we’re soon weaving through huts and bushes, racing to keep ahead of the gas. I saw where the chopper landed, and my watch started beeping. Only a minute left, and this chopper pilot decides it’s a good idea to hover at the top of the quarry. “Oh man, this is about to be one of the times I die trying” I say to myself as I’m slamming through AQ troops towards my goal. I decide to gamble and go around instead of attempting the complex route through the heart of the quarry, and I’m getting tore up by troops on the way. An army of AQ is descending on the chopper now, but they are courteous and run in a tight little line, and 12 go down in rapid succession. I skid to a stop at the chopper with 30 seconds on the clock, and bid my customer good day. I yell out “Next time, stay on the chopper, my friend” and resume running defense, my LTV now billowing black smoke.
With 20 seconds on the clock, I suddenly see a white hatchback go airborne from deep in the quarry. “Friendly, friendly, friendly!!” yell two operators, racing to get to the bird in time. “Hurry up guys!” I call back. “I’m just the taxi driver, I’m not a threat. There’s one guy in the chopper, he’s friendly too. Go go go!” They sprint past me and head for the ramp, the only way on the chopper. I’m running over the last of the AQ in the area when it happens. Out of nowhere, the unmistakable sound of a RAAL reverberates through the quarry. I spin around in time to see one of the two operators go down. “NOOOOOOO!!!” I scream through the comms, but it’s too late. The second operator, obviously a veteran in this theatre, sidesteps the wild fire and skillfully drops my customer with his kitted EBR. He casually hops on the chopper and brutally eviscerates him with a large knife right in front of me. “That was for my friend” he says as the chopper lifts off. I walk over to the fallen operator left behind, and try to comfort him as the gas rolls in. “I swear, my friend, I swear he was friendly. I’m so sorry.” This needless death haunts my thoughts as the darkness once again takes me.
A pounding on my door brings me back from the darkness. “Raz! RAZ! Are you in there? Open the damn door!” I pull myself together, shuffle across the room, and open the door. Dutch is there, looking concerned. “It’s been 3 days, boss. People are out there looking for rides, and you’re not out there? What’s going on?” I slowly and painfully explain what happened at the quarry. “I dunno Dutch, I can’t shake it. He was FRIENDLY! Why did he open fire?” I ask as I start to sob.
SMACK. I never saw it coming. “Pull yourself together, boss. You got him to the chopper. You DID YOUR JOB.” It’s enough to get my attention, simply because I’ve never seen someone so Canadian be so stern. “Now go get your Burger Town shirt, comb your mustache, and get the hell back out there. Al Mazrah needs you! Also, sorry for hitting you” Dutch says. “You’re right” I say, and I look in the mirror, not recognizing the disheveled face staring back at me. “We get them there, or we die trying. He made his choice, and he reaped what he sowed.” I slip my throwing knife into my belt and follow Dutch outside. “Well, what’d I miss, my friend?”
“Word on the street is there’s a driver named Jade out there doing good work. Working hard for the cause, but the other day AQ raided his shipping container, tried to kill him, and stole his most prized possession” Dutch explained. “Shit, really?” I said. “They stole his car keys?” What could be more valuable to a taxi driver? “We need to bring him in, come on, let’s let Sophia know we’re going to need another room.” “No boss, it’s worse than that” said Dutch. “They took his only picture of his beloved cat. It’s the only thing he loves more than being a taxi driver.” I stop dead in my tracks. “A picture of a cat?” My mind races. Who would steal that? No, it couldn’t be. It wouldn’t be. It CAN’T be. “Dutch, I know who it is. I know who’s hunting him. I know who’s coming for us all. Scuba Steve, the radiation, the cat photos, the soothing hand cream, the constant betrayals. It all makes sense to me now!” Dutch looked more confused than ever. “What the hell are you talking about, boss?”
“The Chemist, Dutch. It all leads back to the Chemist” I say, my mind reeling as all the pieces fall into place at once. The weight of this knowledge is almost too much to bear. “Dutch, you still have that Bryson?” I ask, suddenly calm. “I know what needs to be done.” Yeah boss” says Dutch. “I still got it, but what about the rules? We’re taxi drivers, Raz.” “Listen, Dutch. Grab your gun and meet me downstairs. I’ll tell you on the way.”
The radiation cloud in the distance looms like death. Both hands on the wheel, I guide our LTV slowly towards it. I tell Dutch the whole story, all the way from the beginning. About the quiet kid in our neighborhood who kept to himself and fed the stray cats. About the bully everyone called “Juggernaut” who terrorized us all, just because he was bigger and stronger and meaner that the rest of us. About the time I stole my first LTV and took it for a joyride through Ahkdar Village, sparking my love for driving. And then, with a big sigh, I told him about that fateful Tuesday that changed the landscape of Al Mazrah forever.
“He was just a boy, Dutch.” I start, tears already coming to my eyes. We were all there, running around being kids. The boy and his cats weren’t bothering anyone, but the boy we called Juggernaut just wouldn’t leave him alone. We all saw him assaulting him, but we did nothing. “And that’s when it happened, Dutch.” The boy took a yellow vial from his pocket and threw it right into the bully’s face. “I’ve never seen anything so gruesome” I said, as I recounted the scene. It was like acid, but something so much worse. His face basically melted before our eyes. “Sounds like he got what he deserved, a slow death” said Dutch. “That’s the worst part” I replied. He was taken to the hospital in Al Mazrah City, and we all thought he was dead, and it was all over.
But one day, many years later, he returned. A hulking figure standing in the street, sunken eyes hidden beneath a steel helmet. Full body armor from head to toe, and a minigun in hand. He didn’t speak, but we knew who he was, and why he was there. He lumbered towards the school, where he knew his target would be, like he always was, in the chemistry lab. As the shooting started, I panicked, and grabbed the closest vehicle I could find. “It was instinct, Dutch. I never even saw them, man, I was just running away!” The emotions all flooded back at once, and my hands trembled on the wheel. We were close to the radiation now, but I knew we had to continue. “Never saw what, Raz? What are you talking about?”
“The cats, man. The fucking cats.” He kept them on an old ox cart, a relic from the olden days of Al Mazrah. “I drove straight through them, Dutch. I never even saw them.” But he saw me. The boy, now the man they call “The Chemist” was focused not on escaping the Juggernaut, but saving the only living things precious to him. “And I killed all of them, Dutch. He saw me do it.” I took everything he cared about away from him. “It’s why he’s doing those experiments. It’s why the radiation keeps spreading. It’s why this is all happening.” I said, the truth weighing heavy on me. “It’s why we have to kill him.”
“Shit, man. This is some heavy stuff” said Dutch. “How do you know the Chemist even knows that it was you?” he asked. “Dutch, look at me, man. I’ve had this mustache since the fourth grade. He knows. And now I’ve put you all in danger.” I parked the LTV at the edge of the radiation zone. “Look, this is my fight. I can’t ask you to come in there with me. Take the car, go do your job. You don’t owe me anything” I say, grabbing my M4, determined to finish this solo. But Dutch stood firm, his shotgun shining in the sun. “I’ll get you there, or I’ll die trying, boss. Let’s do this.”
We pulled our gas masks down and stepped into hell. The Chemist’s laboratory is somewhere in the small town east of the airport, hidden in the smoke. We move quickly, radiation pills working hard to stem the slow death waiting for us if we fail. There are AQ everywhere, and my M4 sings a song I haven’t heard in a long time. Dutch’s Bryson spits hot fire, and we move like the skilled operators we once were. “There, in that warehouse” I yell, and we take our positions. “It’s now or never boss, let’s get this guy” Dutch says, and we breach from both entrances like rolling thunder.
The sudden flash disorients me, and the explosion cracks my mask. I hear Dutch yell from off into the distance, but I can’t see anything. I fire blindly, attempting to find cover and regain my vision. I’m hit in the vest and feel all three of my plates crack and break up. I struggle to reload, the gas now stealing life from me. “I suppose it’s die trying time” I think to myself, and stand to make one last push, to go out in a blaze of glory. I search for a target, for anything moving, but I’m lost in a fog. I call out to Dutch but get no response.
The blow comes from behind. I hit the floor like a sack of potatoes, stunned and unable to move. I brace for the finishing blow, like I have so many times before, but it does not come. Suddenly, I’m viciously flipped onto my back, and I see clearly for the first time. Neoprene, black as night, from head to toe, and my M4 strapped across his back. “Goddamn Scuba Steve” I choke out, as he stares at me with cold eyes. And then I see the figure behind him. I recognize those eyes behind his gas mask, hidden under his yellow hood. His M13B hanging to his side, and he looks at me with calculated hatred. “Good to see you again, Raz” he says, his voice sending terror through me. “I bet you’re wondering what I’ve been doing here, aren’t you. It’s quite the story, and I’m going to tell you, right meow.” The Chemist launches into his bad guy monologue as I groan on the floor. His goal to punish the world, to choke us all with his radioactive lightning clouds. His years of experiments, his many failures. “Just get to the point already” I choke out, ready for the end. “As you wish. I have a surprise for you, Raz. My finest work. My masterpiece, which I call “Manufactured Evil Operator Warfare. You’re my first victim, but I’m coming for all your drivers next. I hope you enjoy it” he cackles as he walks away. “Do it now, my loyal servant” are the last of his words I hear. Scuba Steve leans over me, a gigantic syringe in hand. Without a word, he plunges it into my heart, and there is only black.
“CATCH A RIDE!”
The familiar words snap my eyes open. Bright sunlight floods my vision, skewed by the gas mask on my face. An LTV races by, horn honking, someone yelling “Al Mazrah Taxi Service, do you need a ride?” I hear waves breaking behind me, and a fortress looms in the distance. I know this place, it feels familiar, but I remember nothing. I stand up slowly and dust off my Biohazard suit. This is Al Mazrah. And I am here for one reason, and one reason only.

2023.02.01 23:10 SlinkiusMaximus Valentine's Day restaurant recommendations (looking for around $75-$100/person including drinks, but I'm flexible)--any help for this city-restaurant-ignorant suburbs guy?
My girlfriend lives on the north side in Roscoe Village, so somewhere within about 30 minutes of Roscoe Village would be ideal, including downtown, the West Loop, the Near North Side, etc. Something upscale and relatively fancy within the $75-$100/person range is what I'm looking for.
Hopefully I'm not too late in making reservations, but if so, we're okay with doing a day other than Valentine's Day itself.
Neither of us have dietary restrictions.
I checked for other Valentine's Day recommendation posts, and there doesn't appear to be a lot of info.
Thanks in advance!

2023.02.01 21:39 Opening-Archer9830 Small Chicago update on Yak today
BFW said they’re office most likely will be next to a big trampoline park, which is awesome and good for content probably. If you know Chicago this is probably the West Loop which is a cool area to have an office. Used to be an industrial area, now it’s a fast growing residential area. If anyone cares, if not I’ll see myself out.
