2023.02.03 05:23 jemat0207 "The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob..." what about Abraham's descendants by his second wife?
I'm reading through Exodus, and something new is sticking out to me. When Moses flees Egypt after killing the Egyptian, he lands in Midian and marries a Midianite woman. Her father, Jethro/Reuel, is described as a priest of Midian. He seems to be painted in an honorable light with Moses even taking leadership advice from him later on in Exodus and no mention of any conversion of Jethro or his daughter, Moses's wife. Maybe it was assumptions from most of my understanding of Moses coming from a Disney movie as a child, but I guess I always assumed Jethro and the other Midianites were pagan.
This time around I'm remembering that Midian was a son of Abraham by his second wife. Therefore the Midianites are also descendants of Abraham. Zipporah, Moses's wife, seems familiar enough with circumcision to not only know to do it, but even seems to understand the significance enough to be angry with Moses for not circumcising their son.
It makes sense that Abraham would have raised his later children under his faith. And I understand that the promise to Abraham went to Isaac and then Jacob/Israel which is why the Israelites are God's chosen people and not every line that came from Abraham.
But then is it safe to say that there were other tribes/families not only aware of Yahweh, but also actively worshiping him and following him? And if so, what are the implications of that when it comes to the law, considering they never would have received it and Jesus won't come to fulfill it for generations? I know the law didn't actually save the Israelites at any point...but for some reason this is messing with my head.
Or am I just reading into this too much? Are we to assume the Midianites are worshiping Yahweh?

Jeanne floats a few feet into the air, heavenly beams streaming from her face. She points towards the camera as three pairs of angelic wings sprout from her back.
"Behold, Oh most noble Reims, your true king, the one true ruler of the most Christian Kingdom!"
Default: An aspect of Jeanne d'Arc, the general who constantly demanded the full-scale, reckless, and merciless invasion of Anglo-Burgundian France. A side buried underneath her numerous legends. She dons an elaborate and customized suit of armor akin to that of male soldier from 15th-century France, and her black hair is cut short above the ears, in the typical style of princes. Sheathed at her side was the Holy Sword of Fierbois (associated with St. Catherine), and strapped to her back was the iconic standard, the golden fleur-de-lis of France sown across a white field and the Latin words Jhesum Maria inscribed underneath. Summoned with Jeanne is her steed, a horse given by the inhabitants of Vaucouleurs, that she rode to Chinon.
Bond 1: Jeanne didn't have or use a last name during her life. The surname of her father, d'Arc, was given to her postmortem. She called herself Jeanne la Pucelle (the Maid) when talking or writing, a fact reflected in this version's True Name. In Chaldea, she refers to herself as la Pucelle to help distinguish her from the other Jeanne.
Bond 2: Warcry of the Maiden A- At and after the Battle of Orleans, Jeanne's warcry inspired courage in her allies and cowardice in her enemies. So great was her presence, that the English abandoned all but one of their forts in Orleans after only one encounter against her.
Aid from the Heavens A- According to Jeanne, St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Margaret of Scotland, and St. Michael the Archangel appeared to her in visions and apparitions. This skill borrows the skills/authorities of these three figures to aid in her allies' offense.
Bond 3: Witch of the Armagnacs A- Declared a witch, a whore, and a heretic by the English, they despised Jeanne outside the battlefield just as much as they feared her in battle, if not more so. This secondary reputation grants Jeanne la Pucelle a conceptual advantage against any who hail from the lands of England, regardless of the time period.
Protection of Arrows (False) C-minus- Unlike Cu Chulainn, Jeanne was not magically granted protection of arrows. Yet records show that Jeanne took arrows or stones near her vitals or appendages without succumbing to those wounds, inspiring her shocked allies with another warcry. While somewhat similar to battle continuation, this skill takes the name Protection of Arrows in reference to these records.
Bond 4: Le Couronnement- The Crowning of the True King
Jeanne declared her mission to be the coronation of dauphin Charles (crowned as King Charles VII), the unification of the French court, and the expulsion of the English from France. In her lifetime, Jeanne only witnessed one of these events. During Jeanne's time period, the King of France held the title, "The most Christian King of the most Christian Kingdom." And the coronation of King Charles VII was the (literal) crowning moment for both Jeanne and her contemporaries. In this Noble Phantasm, Jeanne crowns an ally, bestowing the blessings of the angels and the authorities of the most Christian king upon them. Once they are crowned, Jeanne's skills have a greater effect on them.
Bond 5: In the embellishment of her legend, Jeanne lost some of her humanity, of her character. Her anger, impatience, and mercilessness seem incompatible with the hero she eventually became. Protecting others was something Jeanne knew little about. She beckoned her soldiers to charge with impunity, for with the will of God seemingly on her side, Jeanne had nothing to fear. Unlike her Ruler counterpart, this Jeanne feared capture and the stake, to the point where she even denied her own visions and mission. Yet like the Ruler, she ultimately chose to burn at the stake, to die instead of denying her purpose. She died in despair of seemingly failing her mission, of God seemingly abandoning her. She could only hope that God could forgive her failures.
Bond 1: I am Jeanne la Pucelle, here to dispel the enemies of the world. . . .Eh? d'Arc? That is the surname of my father, but please call me la Pucelle or the Maid, if that's easier. I look forward to fighting with you and your allies, Master.
Bond 2: Master, why do you spend so much time farming? Do you doubt the strength of your allies? You have the will of the World on your side, with all these heroes at your disposal! I should be charging down the enemy lines, not doing these menial tasks!
Bond 3: . . . Apologies Master. It seems I have spoken out of turn. I understand that we should take as few risks as possible, but. . . where's the risk if your victory is all but certain?
Bond 4: I admire you, Master. Even in a situation like this, you never once let doubt or fear cloud your judgment. You heed caution, yes, but you know when to make your stand. . . I really admire that about you. . . I wish I could say the same about myself.
Bond 5: This may not mean much to you, but as the Maiden of Orleans, I know that the will of the Lord is on your side. Mankind's victory shall come by your own hands. Never doubt the strength of your bonds, the strength in yourself, and the future will be yours again. I swear it, on the banner of St. Michael.
My Room Lines
Dialogue 1: Thank you for inviting me into your room, Master. I brought some wine and glasses to enjoy while we chat. . . . You can't drink because you're too young? I assure you, wine is harmless in moderation. We're about the same age physically, so you can trust me on this. Besides, you have to try this wine that Gilles gave me. He somehow managed to procure my favorite from the Professor.
Dialogue 2 (Clear First Singularity)- Even during the darkest days of my imprisonment, I never blamed King Charles for my predicament. I knew that the Lord would deliver me from my plight someday. . . That damned Dragon Witch! How dare she burn the king she herself cornonated! Slaughter the people of Orleans who never forgot her! . . . Who never forgot us, even when the whole world thought us a heretic.
Dialogue 3 [Jeanne d'Arc (Ruler)]- It's definitely peculiar, seeing myself with long, flowing golden lockes and in such feminine armor. I didn't even know they made armor for women. . . Oh, sorry for the rude comments. I'm still not used to there. . . you know. . . being another me. I have to ask, though, your Noble Phantasm certainly is beautiful, but with such protection at your side, why do you just stand there? Why not charge into the enemy, knowing that the Lord will protect you and your allies?
Dialogue 4 [Jeanne d'Arc (Archer)]- You know. . . I refrained from judging your normal battle armor, but why do you wear such indecent clothes? There's no need to tempt our allies any more than you already do! . . . O-of course, you're very pretty (blushes), but that's exactly why you have to dress more modestly!
Dialogue 5 [Jeanne d'Arc Alter (AvengeBerserker)]- You! . . . My other, more saintly self may forgive what you did in Orleans. I don't even know if you even remember the event of that singularity, but that doesn't change that you have foresaken the very purpose of our lives, the immense gratitude of those people. . . I don't care if you're not actually Jeanne d'Arc. What you did was unforgivable, especially since you bear her name and face.
Dialogue 6 [Jeanne d'Arc Alter Santa Lily]- Be calm, I don't hate you as much as your older self. It seems that the two of you are distinct beings. . . Why do I look so happy? Well, winter was always hard for me, before and after I joined the army. It's nice to know that the people of this era can celebrate the Lord's birth without fear of hunger or plague.
Dialogue 7 [Gilles de Rais (Saber)]- Gilles! It's nice to see a familiar face. . . Eh? You don't recognize me? I am Jeanne la Pucelle, your ally, no? Are you the Gilles from Jeanne d'Arc's world? . . . I see. Well in that case, I don't mind starting over. Let's head over to the Professor's bar. We can chat over wine, just like old times.
Dialogue 8 [Gilles de Rais (Caster)]- So . . . this is the final fate of one of my most trusted allies? How could you fall to such depths? Was your faith in the Lord so feeble?! The trust in your king so weak?! You don't even recognize me, do you? . . . It hardly mattered last time, but I think it's for the best that I avoid you. For the sake of my own sanity.
Dialogue 9 [Georgios]- St. George! What a great privilege it is to speak with you! I may have fought those whose banners bear your cross, but I hold no ill will against the English. I just did what the Lord commanded me. . . If you wouldn't mind, could you show me some of your photos? I hear that you're Chaldea's resident photographer, and I've never seen a camera before.
Diaglogue 10 [Charlemagne]- Oh! My apologies most holy King Charlamagne! I should have been more humble in your presence; though, you are younger than I imagined you to be. . . Huh? You're not the King from history, and you barely even remember your rule? I see. . . No, it matters not that you. You wield the Joyeuse, yes? Much of my life as the Maid was in pursuit of your holy sword, and the fact that you carry it proves that you are indeed the most Christian king. . . If that makes you uncomfortable, then perhaps we can be friends? I would like to know more of your adventures. I grew up with those stories after all. And besides, we're kind of similar, no? Overshadowed by more prominent sides of ourselves.
Dialogue 11 [Marie Antoinette (RideCaster)]- Ah, Queen Marie, do you require something from me? Eh? You admire me? Do you not mean my Ruler self? . . . You admire both of us equally, and want to get to know me better? Hm . . . Well, I was about to go and pray for a while. Would you mind chatting over some wine after dinner? . . . Of course! I wouldn't mind drinking with you and my other self in the future. I want to learn about her too.
Dialogue 12 [Charles-Henri Sanson]- What? You expected me to be mad for executing the French royalty of your era? It's true that they died by your hands, but you were just a tool in someone else's hands, no? And while I can't say for certain, I can believe the Lord witheld His blessings from the royalty of that era, if they were as sinful as the records indicate.
Dialogue 13 [Napoleon]- As a fellow commander, I respect your very offensive tactics General Napoleon; though, the number of casualties is less admirable. For restoring order and the Church to France, I am sure the Lord blessed you on the battlefield. You marched through imperial lands, including what I knew as Burgundy, with such ease! If my victories at Orleans made me a hero, yours must have even more so!
Dialogue 14 [Artoria Pendragon (Saber)]- Hey Jeannette. . . . Oh! My apologies, you looked so much like my other self that I seemed to have mistaken you for her. I am Jeanne la Pucelle. May I ask for your name? . . . Pendragon? Are you King Arthur! I-I never knew King Arthur was a woman. . . No, no that's not a slight against your abilities as either a warrior or a king. My strongest political backer was a woman after all. I am just surprised is all, to meet such a famous figure as you.
Dialogue 15 [Merlin]- Are you the wise sage Merlin? I have a question to ask of you. The theologians of my day said that you prophesized that "a virgin ascends the backs of archers, and hides the flower of her virginity." Many of them said that prophesy foretold my arrival. I have always doubted that claim, so I must ask if your words actually concerns me. . . What? You won't answer? But why? Wait a moment, why are you running? No! I can't let you leave before answering. COME BACK HERE!

2023.02.03 03:39 davidlex00 First trip to DisneyLand Questions
Hi - I am taking my wife and 7 yr old daughter to LA this summer and we are going to Disneyland for 2 days. We frequent WDW and this will be our first time at Disneyland. A couple questions
1) trying to decide between Disneyland Hotel or one of the Harbor Blvd hotels like Courtyard. We like to go to the park when it opens and I am trying to figure out if early entry of 30 minutes worth staying on property (extra couple hundred bucks a night).
2) what is the walk like from Disneyland hotel to park entry? Seems like 10 mins?
3) are there typically package deals for early august - or is that too prime time for them to offer discounts?
4) if we stay on property, is it worth booking through an agent? Any discounts through them?
5) should we visit Disneyland Park on the first day or DCA? For 2 day trip I figure we don’t need park hopper - what do you think? Any other special add ons?
Any other words of wisdom?

2023.02.03 02:50 Morzo_Voidmaster Solbound Part 2 of 7
Mik sat on a bench in front of his favorite cafe in the shuttle's central plaza.
He half wished that he could stay here and try his hand at gardening.
But the changeover was less than an hour away.
The 3D ticker informed them of their stop, a gargantuan ring habitat situated in interstellar space, safely tucked away from explosive stars and temperamental planetary orbits.
"Utopia Ring," he read aloud. "A bit boastful, don't you think, Del?"
Del stopped in the mid-swing of her latest attempt to skip pebbles in the fountain.
"You do know who runs the place, right?"
"Some smug High Arin that thinks he is the next Ygba."
"Oh boy, you're in for a respectful awakening."
The shuttle resurfaced from Underspace as they had this conversation.
Underspace, the dimension below our own that allowed shuttles, and all other faster-than-light ships, to travel across interstellar distances on human timescales.
Not only this, but the travel was paradox free and required no fuel.
But Underspace, for all its benefits, had a viscosity like molasses.
The rate of FTL travel depended on how well a ship's drive could navigate this molasses.
Shuttles were slow boats, able to travel ten light years per day.
Military ships could travel much, much faster.
All FTL ships, however, had to drop out several million kilometers from their destination for safety's sake.
Mik and Del's shuttle dropped out three million kilometers from Utopia Ring.
31,400 kilometers in circumference and 1,000 kilometers in width, the ring was a surface area equivalent to Africa spinning silently under the Sol-like light of its central illuminator.
Against the backdrop of the ring's 100 kilometer high atmosphere retaining walls, the shuttle was but a flake of black paint.
It landed in its usual spot, on the spinward shore of Paradise Sea, a Mediterranean sized body of water with a similar array of climates.
30,000 passengers exited onto the beach of fine white sand.
Utopia Ring was the hot holiday destination for this region of Settled Space.
Upon first stepping out, Mik and Del shielded their eyes from the artificial sun and caught a glimpse of Wazzo in the sky.
He was a titanic golden humanoid soaring through the sky on six translucent wings, each twice as large as his main body.
Del knew that he would soon circle back around to greet his new guests, but Mik wanted nothing to do with it.
"Are you afraid," said Del, "to come face to face with the High Arin you called 'smug?'"
"I'm afraid," said Mik, "to miss the next shuttle which arrives in twelve hours and on the opposite side of the ring, 15,000 kilometers away."
A talking owl informed them that the fastest way to the next shuttle was by use of the underground vacuum train but that the terminal lay deep in the enchanted forest.
"Since when is convenience not part of utopia?," said Mik.
"You can't enjoy anything in a rush," said Del. "Or sober."
Past the transition from sand to soil but before the start of the enchanted forest, a line of makeshift stands gave away food of every kind and with the option to spike anything with hallucinogens.
Mik skipped the stands.
Del got a shaved ice with a double dose of something called "rainbow splash surprise."
With Mik stubbornly sober and Del getting progressively higher, the two joined the thousands of people treading a new path through the forest.
Never in his life had Mik seen such variety of architecture.
Homes were holes within hills, hollowed out bases of behemoth trees and giant teapots with gardens of waist-high red mushrooms.
Then there was the vine-covered and pink-walled fantasy castle library, the 40 meter tall and wide beehive which served as a concert hall, and the sleeping dragon complete with realistic breathing.
Mik didn't know why so many people swarmed into that last building and Del became red-faced when he asked.
Hospitals were nowhere to be found as the air was filled with swarms of robotic insects whose individuals were everything from an EMT to a surgeon to a massage therapist.
And, as Mik found out, restrooms consisted of the nearest bush combined with a ground which absorbed waste within seconds.
"I can't believe my eyes," said Mik, "and I can only imagine what you're seeing."
"Honey," said Del, "you can't imagine what I'm seeing."
They found the entrance to the vac train terminal behind a waterfall where three youthful women with pointed ears and hair to their tail bone washed their nude bodies with carefree gaiety.
Now it was Mik's turn to become red-faced.
The fantasy aesthetic crashed into the safety engineering required of rapid transit.
The train and its tunnel wouldn't be out of place in any other large habitat.
Exits were clearly marked and Mik and Del sat right by one.
"Come on," said Del, "couldn't we stay here for a little longer. A week, tops."
"But the next shuttle doesn't return for two weeks," said Mik.
"I wouldn't mind spending two years here."
"The true believer wants to put off her meeting with Ygba?"
"Fine, but before we leave it's customary that you say goodbye to Wazzo."
"Why? I brushed him off once already, and I can do it again."
The vac train let them off on the opposite side of the Utopia Ring just five kilometers from the next shuttle's landing site.
No enchanted forest here, only desert, though magical in its own way.
Computer-controlled wind shaped the coarse orange sand into waves across which rainbow snakes meandered.
Genetically engineered cacti had grown into a pack of coyotes, knights on horseback, a flying saucer, a prophet with tablet in hand and a one-tenth scale Eiffel Tower.
A range of sandstone mountains bounded the landing site on one side while two perpendicular lines of loosely spaced boulders demarcated the rest.
The shuttle would fit snugly inside this triangular zone and stretch its boarding ramp between the boulders to welcome the thousands of passengers gathered outside.
Little conformity existed among those passengers.
5,000 people from a hundred worlds and mixed further by the human need to meet new people.
There was even a short-haired mutt of a dog running and yipping about.
Suddenly, the entire atmosphere was filled with the sound of trumpets.
Wazzo, that golden angel with translucent wings, appeared over the mountains and flew across the waiting crowd, dropping leaf-wrapped packets as he went.
Mik opened his packet to find an intricately decorated copy of the Ygbian holy book, Sapien Fortuna.
Del had hallucinogenic tea and bags in hers.
Each member of the crowd got something a little different in their packet, but their response was the same.
"La, Wazzo! La, la, la! La, Wazzo! La, la, la!"
Wazzo descended amongst them.
He stood six meters in height and his six wings gave him a maximum breadth of 25.
He didn't look happy.
"Why do you 'La' me?," said Wazzo. "Am I the one who gave humanity the plenty it needed to set out for the stars? Am I the one who vanquished most of the Fate Lords? Do I now sit at Sol directing humanity ever upward? No! That is the role of my Father. So do not 'La' me, but Ygba."
Like scorned children, most in the crowd, including Mik and Del, clasped their hands together and stared at their feet.
But not everyone.
"La, Fate Lords! La, Starmonger! La, la, la!"
Wazzo's golden skin turned lead gray and his wings wilted until they dragged the ground.
"Who said that?," he said. "Who praises such beings?"
A dozen people admitted to praising humanity's millennia-old enemies.
"Explain yourselves," said Wazzo in a calmer voice than before.
A squat, silver-haired woman in flowing black robe came forward.
"Ygba is a false god," she said. "He has scattered humanity near and far without healing the scars of our birth."
"My Father spread us out so that we may find the solutions ourselves," said Wazzo.
"But there is only one solution, and you know exactly what that is."
"Get out. All who subscribe to this mad woman's philosophy, get off of my ring and never return. Look, the shuttle comes now. Be the first aboard."
The shuttle was indeed approaching.
In the confrontation, few noticed five square kilometers of black triangle descending from the sky.
The followers of the Fate Lords boarded first as Wazzo requested.
The Argen's golden color and vibrant wings returned once the followers were out of his sight.
The shuttle then sipped the rest of the crowd of 5,000, including the yipping dog.
Mik and Del eventually got their turn to board, but Wazzo stopped them with a wing.
"You two are on The Pilgrimage, correct?"
"Y-yes sir," said Mik.
"Great, because I was hoping you'd do me a favor."
"Sure thing, boss," said Del.
"Many thanks. You see, you'll be passing through the megastructure my brother oversees. Would you tell Dismar that I worry about him and ask him to please respond to my letters?"
"That's it?," said Del.
"That's it. Oh, and he's not as accessible as I am so you may have to work at reaching him."
"You're going to have to tell us more," said Del.
"I would love to but your shuttle will be leaving in about five minutes. Get aboard you two, come on. Bon voyage!"

Humans are Weird – Lava
“So the commander of the central flight wants to make a formal ceremony of the act of gratitude,” Forty-five Clicks informed the human who was busily strapping something onto his legs. “He-“
Forty-five Clicks stopped speaking as he realized exactly what the human had been trying on. Just to make sure he flew up to the top of the backpack the human was loading and chirped in, sounding the fragrant depths.
“Why are you packing up this personal heat shielding?” Forty-five Clicks demanded.
He wasn’t sure why all the fur on his body stood on end but by the gum of the mother tree he had learned to trust that instinct.
“I need it to get the samples,” the human replied cheerfully.
Forty-five Clicks wasn’t one to perch on ceremony, even by the loose standards of his people. He leapt up and threw all of his forty grams of mass in the face of the human and dug his winghooks into the soft flesh under the human’s ears. This let him glare furiously into one of the cavernous pupils of the larger mammal.
“What. Samples?” Forty-five Clicks demanded.
“Of the lava,” the human said quickly. “Hey, winghooks man.”
“Why?” Forty-five Clicks pressed.
“For fun,” the human replied.
“Where are you going to get lava from?” Forty-five Clicks demanded as slowly as he could.
“That volcano that just popped,” the human replied, gesturing in what Forty-five Clicks assumed was meant to be the direction of the former mountain.
It wasn’t. How did they survive in nature on their own the poor directionless things?
“The volcano,” Forty-five Clicks said. “The one that nearly killed three flights. The one that took down not only our silverwing atmospheric flyers but also one of your near indestructible helicopters. The one that utterly destroyed hectares of land. The one that is currently spewing ash, gas, and liquid magma.”
“It isn’t magma after it gets to the surface!” The human insisted.
Forty-five Clicks groaned and loosed the human. He slid down the human’s chest until he was caught in the broad hand. The hand that was covered in scars so thick any one of them would have utterly incapacitated his wings, and a fresh cut that he knew the human had gained in the rescue operation. Forty-five Clicks sighed and rubbed his eyes.
“You are not going to collect magma-“
“Lava.” The human corrected hopefully.
“Lava samples from the volcano.” Forty-Five Clicks said as firmly as he could. “For fun.”
“And why not?” demanded the human.
“I just can’t right now,” Forty-five Clicks said. “Just go ask the commander.”
“Will do then,” the human said cheerfully as he set off.
Forty-five Clicks flew up and passed over the backpack once again. He glared at the thermal armor. He had assumed it was only for rescue missions. His mistake. https://preview.redd.it/yl29nxbx9vfa1.png?width=501&format=png&auto=webp&s=c1754f91d56a313f8369fa4758ed5c678b7517e7
Humans are Weird – Trees are for Climbing
Seven Trills fluttered along the outdoor recreation area just over the soft green groundcover as he listened to his assistant. The larger Winged was going over the list of guests that would be attending the opening of the new consulate. Seven Trills tried to pay attention but the scorching heat of Sol was stinging his sensory horns dreadfully. He wondered how his assistant was ignoring it. He angled himself over to one of the solitary trees the humans kept in the area hoping for shade. His assistant followed willingly and Seven Trills soon perched on an exposed root in the clear area around the trees base.
“And I think it would be best if we instituted a general search protocol to avoid insult to the delegate.” His assistant said.
“Oh yes, yes,” Seven Trills replied.
His assistant was annoyingly, persistently right about these things. The protective shade provided by the tree was suddenly disturbed by a movement in the branches over head and both Seven Trills and his assistant angled their eyes up to see what had made the disturbance in the oppressively still air.
“Is that a human?” Seven Trills asked.
“Is that human spying on us?” his assistant demanded.
Seven Trills heaved a sigh and took flight. His assistant followed.
“How would he know we would come to this tree?” Seven Trills asked.
“Ping,” the assistant granted him.
They had now reached the human and any question was put to rest. The human had braced his massive form against the trunk and branches and was blissfully sleeping away. His arms were sprawled over other branches. Seven Trills grabbed a handy perch and swung down to a resting position. His assistant joined him shortly.
“I don’t think we should risk waking him,” his assistant said in a tone they had determined humans couldn’t hear.
“A fall from this height would be disastrous for a human,” Seven Trills said.
What the human was doing here at all was the question.
“I checked the duty roster against his name,” the assistant said after a moment spent working at his tablet. “This human is in a rest and recreation period but due to the increased security he can’t leave the base.”
“Bored humans,” Seven Trills suggested.
“The base has more entertainment options than any of the surrounding communities,” his assistant pointed out.
At this point the human’s heart rate accelerated in the way that usually proceeded waking and both Winged fell silent. The human twitched, stretched, and yawned. His eyes opened revealing interwoven blue and green irises contrasting his deep black pupils. The colorful muscles dilated and contracted a few moments before he focused on them.
“Hey,” the human said, pulling his lips up in a smile.
“Greetings,” Seven Trills said. “Perhaps you can satisfy our curiosity.”
“Sure?” the human replied.
“What are you doing up here?” the assistant demanded.
The human glanced down at the ground far below and then up at him. He face seemed to pass between confusion and curiosity a few times and then he showed all of his teeth.
“Trees are for climbing little friend. Trees are for climbing.”
2023.02.03 02:03 EjmMissouri Daniel Chapter 1, Part 5 – Making a Firm Decision
Daniel 1:8-13 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. Now God had brought Daniel into the favor and goodwill of the chief of the eunuchs. And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, "I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking worse than the young men who are your age? Then you would endanger my head before the king." So Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, "Please test your servants for ten days, and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then let our appearance be examined before you, and the appearance of the young men who eat the portion of the king's delicacies; and as you see fit, so deal with your servants."
Without Complaining or Disputing
A point to note. Daniel and his companions did not allow their convictions to make them discourteous. Some might think that as prisoners in a foreign land, captives of an enemy nation, they would have been in their right to gripe and complain. They easily could have approached the Babylonian officers who were appointed authority over them with a chip on their shoulders. But they did not. But rather, they very politely requested from the proper authorities’ permission to be served a simple vegetarian diet.
This is a lesson in life that many Christians could use today. If you honestly believe that God is sovereign over all the earth, that He is in control, that nothing can happen except by His permission, then all complaining must be considered to be nothing less than rebellion against the providential workings of God.
Philippians 2:14-15 Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.
The Power of a Right Attitude
Even though God had “given up” the kingdom of Judah as a whole, He still stood by individuals. God stood by Daniel and his companions even in their captivity - and God still stands by His people today.
The Bible says that “God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the prince of the eunuchs." KJV. And the Bible says that “God gave” Daniel and his friends learning and skill in all letters and wisdom. Why? Perhaps because of their attitude. By not giving in to “complaining and disputing” they were able to “shine as lights in the [Babylonian] world” in which they now found themselves. Because of their attitude God could use them to shine His light into the Babylonian darkness.
Daniel 1:14-17 So he consented with them in this matter, and tested them ten days. And at the end of ten days their features appeared better and fatter in flesh than all the young men who ate the portion of the king's delicacies. Thus the steward took away their portion of delicacies and the wine that they were to drink, and gave them vegetables. As for these four young men, God gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.
Giving Credit where Credit is Due
Our God is a God who gives. Service to God is never a loss, no matter what the circumstances. But it is forever a gain to those who believe. The knowledge and skill that Daniel and his friends possessed was not theirs by their own ability but was given them by God, and Daniel in telling this story is makes it a point to acknowledge that indeed it was God and God alone who “gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel ... understanding in all visions and dreams.”
Here is yet another reason God could safely “give” not only favor, but knowledge and skill to Daniel and his companions. They, and you will find this repeated all through the book of Daniel, gave credit where credit was due. They openly acknowledge that all they had, all their ability came not from themselves but from God.
God Given Victory
Daniel 1:18-20 Now at the end of the days, when the king had said that they should be brought in, the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. Then the king interviewed them, and among them all none was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah; therefore they served before the king. And in all matters of wisdom and understanding about which the king examined them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers who were in all his realm.
They were better than everybody else, but don’t miss the point -- The reason they were better was not that they were naturally superior to everybody else, but because it was a God given gift.
Troubles and Trials
God gives no guarantee that things will go smooth and easy for you in this life. And you can be sure that the devil is out to make absolutely sure that it doesn’t. “But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him." (1 Corinthians 2:9).
Trials and tribulations we will have in this world. But what is the very worse that the world can do to us in comparison with the glories of heaven? “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18).
Troubles and trials we will have. But these are not to be the focus of our thoughts. Don’t dwell upon all the evils, all the injustices, all the wrongs in this world. The Bible counsels us with these words: “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.” (Philippians 4:8).
Staying Focused, Staying Faithful
Daniel and his companions kept their eyes focused on God and His goodness, even in their captivity. They knew the source of their strength. They knew Who their Helper was. And consequently, they could have peace and confidence even in the midst of enemy territory.
At the very beginning of their captivity, they made firm decision to be true to God no matter the consequence to themselves, and God honored that decision. The first test of their faith may seem to be a small matter to many, simply a matter of what to eat and not to eat, but that one test of their faith decided the whole course of their life afterwards.
Luke 16:10 He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.
Undoubtedly there were other Jews like them who were given the same educational opportunities they were, but who chose to take the easy road of compromise. You never hear of them. They are forgotten by history.
1 Samuel 2:30 Those who honor Me I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed.
Choice’s matter. Attitudes matter.

2023.02.03 01:44 girl_from_the_crypt Warnings to the wannabe cryptid hunters: I've got major fucking daddy issues
My heart still pounding wildly, I got out of the bathtub,
dried myself off and got dressed. I trotted down the stairs to join my brother in the living room. He was holding onto his cell phone with a white-knocked grip. When he looked up at me, it was with wide, empty eyes.
"That was Dad," he told me. "I just got off the phone with him."
"What did he say?" I asked, the hairs on my neck standing on end.
"Okay, so… he picked up the third time I called and I told him I was here. With you." Casimir let out a deep sigh, raking a slender hand through his hair. "I think he kind of got an idea about what was going on then already. He went all quiet and then I said, we know what you did
, and he said he wanted to come over. He'll be here in a few days."
I swallowed thickly. "He will?"
"Yeah." Cas lightly kicked the wooden floorboards. "That's okay with you, right?"
"I guess so. But this isn't gonna end well. He's gonna… I-I'll have to…" My voice faltered. "I mean, he killed people. He wanted to kill the woods." Probably even me,
I added in my mind.
"Yeah. I know. And whatever you're gonna do, I'll have your back."
I stepped forward and wrapped him into a hug. He sighed into my shoulder. Little brother.
I don't know why, but those two words have never felt this wonderful up until now.
"I love you." My voice was low and brittle.
"I love you, too, Fi."
Warm, peaceful silence. Casimir's heated cheek pressing against mine as snowflakes started raining from the steel-gray sky outside, the wind gluing them to the windowpanes. And then, all of a sudden, a choked sob.
"Fiona, I need to tell you something."
It came out as a shaky plea whispered against the side of my head. Cas didn't untangle himself from our embrace.
"Alright," I answered, holding him a little tighter.
"I-I can't. I don't…" He faltered and trailed off. "I need you to know but it feels too strange to say."
"Is it a big thing?"
"Do you maybe wanna tell me bit by bit?"
"Okay. Yeah, uh, that might work." He straightened up, raising his head. "You know how I said I took time off to come here? That wasn't entirely true. I quit."
"You quit?" I repeated, perplexed but making an effort to keep my tone steady and gentle. I didn't want to pry too much. Cas nodded, and I narrowed my eyes at him. "I thought you loved your job."
"I did. But that's not how I want to spend my time anymore." He squared his shoulders. "That's all I wanna say at the moment. I don't wanna be weird or rude or whatever, I just… need to get my head straight. It's really nice to be here with you, though—I want you to know that."
Ominous. I still forced a smile. "That's fine. And you can stay for however long you like." I meant it. The money wasn't a problem. Actually, something occurred to me—with the property obscured from the eyes of outsiders, perhaps I could let some of the workers go in the near future. It'd be sad and probably cause me some more headaches down the line, but that way, I could easily afford to entertain multiple people at the estate with a little more financial security and peace of mind. Then again, that would mean I'd have to uphold my dealings with Nick… not the most pleasant prospect. Whatever the case, I would do anything to keep my brother around.
"Thanks for having me. There's no place I'd rather be." He cleared his throat. "The guards made it through the earthquake okay, by the way. It was a shock, obviously, but nobody's hurt."
I nodded slowly. "I'll send them home for the next couple days. Shit is gonna go down hard soon and I don't want to have them around for it. We don't really need any help right now, and keeping them around would only be putting them into unnecessary danger."
"Okay. Yeah, that's sensible, I guess."
I went about making the necessary calls, seeing each of the employees out as they passed by the house on their way off the property. Most of them didn't really question my unexplained decision. Gus was the only one who showed definitive concern. He tried to ask me if something was wrong, but I blew him off as gently as I could. I did think he deserved an explanation, but it was for the best. He gave in eventually and left, but not before throwing a glance back at me with that trusting yet reproachful look that kind of reminded me of an old, grumpy dog.
"So what now?" Cas asked as I shut the door behind the senior employee.
"I guess we wait."
First, I went upstairs. My father coming back was definitely a grave occasion, so I figured I'd have to look the part the next couple days. I can't say why exactly I cared—Lord knows I don't have any regard for the man. But I did want him to see me as a serious head of the house, someone who knows what she's doing. So I ended up picking the simplest and least flashy dress I owned; the kind of thing I normally only wear on dates.
Yup, I've done dates like this. I go out with normal people! It's not like I'm a total freak. Most folks were pretty taken aback by the whole wedding gown-thing, but not enough not to look past it for at least a little while.
Casimir and I spent the rest of the day watching movies. That was actually pretty nice, and while I couldn't dispel the thoughts of emotionally distant fathers and intrusive Devils showing up around the house, I rather enjoyed myself. It helped that the sweaters Cas had taken to wearing around the house are incredibly soft, so I could rest my head on him like a pillow. The evening brought more snow and calming reprieve. It felt weird looking out at the treeline and knowing that for the first time in ages, there wasn't a single human back there. I couldn't help but wonder how many corpses would show up once it would begin to thaw. For now, they'd lie in silence, slowly getting covered up in layers and layers of white. The thought made me shiver, despite striking me as oddly poetic.
Two mornings later, our doorbell rang.
It was so weird that the man whose arrival I had been dreading so much would simply come up to the house and ring the doorbell. I would have expected him to make an entrance like the ones Nick had been treating me to. Of course I'd known that wasn't actually going to happen, but it still made me feel sort of underwhelmed.
I sat down at the head of the kitchen table, back straight, hands in my lap. "Do I look serious?" I asked Cas, nervously fiddling with the lace sleeve of my dress.
"Sure. Just stop shaking and you're good to go. Should I open?"
"Please do," I said softly.
Cas nodded grimly, wiping his sweat-laced palms on his pants. "R-right," he breathed, looking this way and that before turning on his heel and heading for the door. I heard him pulling it open and exchanging awkward words of greeting with a rugged-voiced man.
I tried to focus on my breathing to soothe my nerves. In. Out. In. Out.
Heavy footsteps in the hallway. In. Out. In. Out.
I clenched my fingers into fists to stop them from trembling. Why was I afraid of him? In. Out. In. Out.
Floorboards creaking under his weight. In. Out. In. Out.
My brother's voice, introducing us like we didn't know each other. "So, Dad… remember your eldest? You guys haven't spoken in how long again?"
No response. In. Out. In. Out.
I turned to face him.
My father had changed since I'd last seen him. His large, once handsome face had gained an abundance of wrinkles and two extra chins. His pale green eyes were bloodshot with deep bags beneath them and his reddened face told a story of someone who'd been to the bottoms of far too many bottles. How strange, for a man of his faith.
It had been a long time since I'd last attempted to focus on somebody's aura, but this time, I did. Mostly, it just made me feel weird. My father's energy bore a slight trace of the supernatural, though not in the way I was used to seeing. He must have been dabbling with witchcraft, though it was hard to tell what kind.
"Maxwell. Please take a seat," I said coldly, gesturing at the chair across from me.
The response was a mere grunt as he moved over, slowly letting himself sink into the cushion. We locked eyes. There was no love in his gaze, not even a hint of affection. No surprises there.
"Good to see you, girl," he said tonelessly.
I let out a bitter laugh. "Of course. So, Daddy, you've been busy. Care to tell me what the fuck
your game is?"
"Nothing you could understand."
"Then why are you here, if not to explain yourself?"
"I've come to end this."
"Well, go right ahead. I'd very much like for you to cease your attempts at undermining me, wholly unsuccessful though they've been so far."
Maxwell leaned forward on his elbows. "Will you hear me out, then?"
"I certainly will. And I have a ton of questions."
Dad shrugged. "Might actually be easier that way. Go ahead."
I swallowed thickly. "Why do you look fifteen minutes away from dying?"
"I have high blood pressure, digestive problems and my heart seems to be in some kind of trouble as well. As you may have guessed from my looks, that all happened due to severe use of alcohol. I'm past saving at this point; I know I'll be drinking myself to death. Sooner rather than later, I believe."
"Oh." That was the only sound I could produce as I regarded my father with raised brows. The clarity with which he spoke was nothing short of determined. "Wh… how? Why are you doing that to yourself?"
Maxwell shrugged. "That's just how it is. It's been going on for a long time now. I'm well aware I won't be there to see the good that my work will do, and I know that I, too, live sinfully, but I know that it will be worth it."
"What will be worth it?"
"There's a power struggle going on at the moment. Chaos and order. They're at an imbalance, for reasons greater than your comprehension. And whether you like it or not, you happen to be a part of it. Your woods, to be exact."
"Ah. You're about to go on about that whole unclaimed territory-thing, aren't you? I've heard it before." I stapled my fingers, tilting my head at him. "Your adversary's filled me in."
"So it's true. Don't get me wrong, I knew you had dealings with the Devil, but it's something else to hear you say it." He exhaled, leaning back in his chair. "I'm not even all that surprised. My daughter, hell's whore."
"What did you just call her?" Cas growled, his voice deeper and angrier than I'd ever heard before. He was still standing beside the table, almost as if he expected the situation to escalate at any second and didn't trust the momentary calm enough to sit down.
"I will not have you speak to me like that under my roof," I said sternly. "You've got no authority here anymore. You're a guest, at best, and not even a beloved one. If you want to leave here in one piece, you should watch your mouth."
"Don't you get it? I don't care what you're gonna do to me. It doesn't matter. I have literally nothing to lose."
"I'll make you eat those words," I promised somberly.
Dad merely chuckled. He was definitely not the easiest person to intimidate. "You're just like your mom, you know that? A self-serving, stupid little cu—"
Before he could finish that sentence, Cas had slapped his square across the face. Our father let out a low groan as he slowly reached up to rub his jaw. "You've got a… a strong right arm there, son," he muttered, seemingly making an effort to sound relaxed.
"So do you want it
, too? The sleeping entity?" I asked impatiently.
"You really are well informed. Yes, I do. So, do you happen to know where to find it?"
"Yup. Not gonna tell you, though. I guess I could, but you aren't making a sound argument by calling me names."
"You're saying you'd refuse to give up such important information purely out of spite?"
"Yeah, pretty much. But I also really don't think this is a good decision. There has always been a balance between chaos and order, why rock the boat now?"
My father let out a long-suffering sigh. "Because the situation is more volatile than it used to be."
"Since you're not going to explain yourself further, I stand by what I said. I have a responsibility towards the woodland denizens. Removing the sleeper from these grounds could be dangerous. I don't think an entity that powerful will take lightly to being roused. I happen to have made it stir in its sleep not too long ago, and it ended up being a mild natural catastrophe. I don't want to imagine what it could do if it lashed out. Especially since a trusted source has told me that it is, in fact, probably highly intelligent. It's made people go insane in the past. It can appear anywhere, anytime, if it so pleases. This thing waking up and wreaking havoc… that's not something I wanna risk." I straightened my back, fixing my father with a resolute gaze. "I'll protect my land at all costs."
Maxwell scoffed. "You and your land, it's always the fucking
land… Why would you even care about this place? I never understood that. It was like that when you were a kid, too. One moment you were chewing my ear off about wanting to go and be a movie star, or make a career in fashion, and the next you'd go spouting all that same nonsense your mother did when I first met her! Old family duties and all that crap… Fiona, the world is not a big fucking forest anymore! These creatures who live here might seem powerful to you, but they're some of the last of their kind—and good riddance, too. The world belongs to us
"Not this part of the world," I said, not missing a beat. I flinched when the large man brought his hand down on the table with a slam.
"I knew it! I fucking knew you'd be that way! That's why I pulled all this off. I figured, maybe, with a couple good blows to your little system, you'd realize how vulnerable you are, but no
, my daughter is as hard-headed as she is slutty."
"Why the fuck are you talking to her like this?" Cas barked, fire in his eyes.
"Why aren't you
?" Dad shot back. "All this woman has ever done is hog your mother's attention, making her forget about the rest of us by crawling up her ass!"
"I didn't crawl up— What the hell are you even on about?" I snapped.
"You did! You know why your mother liked you best? You know why you were her little princess
? She wanted you
to live the life she'd planned for herself, before—"
"Before you got in the way," I interrupted him, voice low with sudden understanding.
My father rose from his chair. "I tried… I tried
to change her. Do you think I was happy, having to live here? Taking on her
last name? That's not how it was supposed to be… When I met her, I thought she needed a firm hand, you know, just to guide her to the right path. And she seemed open to it. And then she got pregnant with you, and we got married, and I had to come live in this den of freaks
, and she… she…"
"She regretted it," I finished his sentence for him.
My father let out a sharp scream as he hurled himself across the table, the wood screaming in protest, but he didn't quite reach me. For a moment, he flopped around helplessly, trying to grab me as I jumped up and scurried away from him.
"What are you doing?" Casimir yelled, gripping the back of the older man's shirt and forcibly dragging him to the floor in a display of surprising strength. I'd forgotten how fit my little brother actually was. He was still rather clumsy when it came to hand-to-hand, though, and it showed when my father pulled him down with him and struck him square across the face. I instantly lunged forward, flinging myself on top of my father as well, but he pushed me right off, sending me rolling aside. My head connected with the floorboards with a dull pain, and it took me some effort to push myself back up, my vision blurry.
I screamed in horror when I saw that Dad had climbed on top of Casimir and was viciously slamming his upper body down onto the floor, meaty hands clutching his shoulders. Cas fell limp before I could reach him. Maxwell slowly rose to his feet, breathing heavily as he removed the handgun from my brother's waistband. "That boy… shoulda shot me when he had the chance," he pressed out, breathing heavily.
I choked out a sob as my eyes darted between Cas and him. I didn't have time to form any clear thoughts. I just kept repeating the word no
in my head over and over again, like a mantra. Dad raised the gun, proceeding towards me as he faced me with an icy calm. His mouth lifted into a cruel smile, his swollen lips reminding me of twin caterpillars. "Tell me where it is, Fiona."
How was this man my Dad? How in the world was he pointing a weapon at me?
This was not how this was going to end. Throwing one last look at my unconscious brother, I sent a prayer to… I didn't even know who. I didn't care. Let him be okay. For fuck's sake, let him be okay, or I'll turn the world upside down.
Then, I took off running.
My only chance. My father wouldn't shoot me dead; I'd be useless to him that way, but I wasn't going to give him the chance to incapacitate me. I sprinted towards the front door, tearing it open and bursting outside. The snow crunched beneath my boots as I raced across the frozen ground. The fabric of my dress stretched wider, groaning with every leap that I took, until the tight long skirt finally ripped along the side, leaving it fluttering around my legs in the wind. Aleksei. Please don't be far.
If I could just reach him in time, he'd be able to help me. I turned my head to find my father following behind me. His face was bright red and he was already gasping for air. He might have been stronger than me, but goddamn, was he slow.
I was approaching the Twin Lakes rapidly, the abandoned black mill looming overhead like a specter. No time to slow down.
I ran right onto the ice, only to instantly lose my footing and skitter across the frozen surface. My fall was humiliatingly unceremonious and extremely painful. I landed on my chest, the impact knocking the air out of my body, leaving me gasping for breath in desperation. My arms were shaking too much to push me back up, and I cursed my own stupidity as I realized I had literally no strength left within me.
That's when I heard a sharp yell.
My father had reached me, stumbling after me onto the ice. But he wasn't able to keep his balance any longer than I had. He howled in shock as he tripped and fell, the gun slipping from his fingers and sliding across the lake, coming to a halt out of our reach. I glanced at it for a second, then back at the struggling man before lunging for the weapon.
I would have liked to, at least.
As it was, all I could do in my state was to hastily crawl towards it. My father appeared to have been struck with the same idea—I heard him wheezing and choking as he crept up the slippery surface. I was just relieved that the layer of ice was thick enough to support our joint weight.
"You bitch," he gritted out. "You're gonna doom us all!"
I looked back at him, meeting a bloodshot gaze amidst a contorted expression. His mouth hung open, blood gushing from his nose and lower lip—he seemed to have fallen onto his face. He made for a dreadful sight. He somehow managed to draw himself up, staggering over to me and throwing his entire weight onto my already aching body. I let out a cry of agony, feeling a crack
somewhere inside of me, though I couldn't tell where. I had been reduced to a squirming heap of pain. He rolled off of me again, then made for the gun, and this time, he got a hold of it. I flopped over onto my back, staring at the cold gray sky as my chest rose and fell unsteadily. Once more, I couldn't seem to take in enough air. I whimpered as my father pushed himself into my field of vision, the muzzle of the gun pointed at my head.
At that moment, he reminded me of Jeremy. Those same milky, crazed eyes that seemed to pierce my own with their glare; the way every crease in his face appeared to exude hatred…
"This is so fucked up," I whispered, desperately searching his features for some semblance of mercy.
"Where is it, Fiona?"
I couldn't seem to focus. "You're supposed to be my Dad… You stupid piece of shit…"
"Where is it?" He leveled the gun at my kneecap, bending down to touch its end to the exposed skin. "This is gonna hurt, you know."
"I know," I said softly, closing my eyes.
"So where is it?"
I stayed silent.
He sighed, I heard him cock the gun and then scream in shock.
My eyes flew open to see that he had let go of the gun which was now resting right beside my leg. He'd jumped to his feet and was furiously patting at his jacket sleeve as smoke rose from the fabric. Out of nowhere, it lit up into a large flame, searing his flesh and drawing howls of agony and raw, deadly fear from his throat. The horror of the sight had me paralyzed for just a moment, frozen to the spot before snapping out of it. I reached for the firearm, hurrying to put the safety back on as I stumbled away from my dad. His cries cut through the silence of the woods, each one shaking me to my very core as I watched on in complete bewilderment.
"You fucking witch! What did you do to me?" he bellowed, throwing himself onto the ground to try and smother the flames that were slowly but deliberately lapping away at his arm.
Afraid the ice was going to give in, I backed off onto dry land, still unable to tear my eyes off the writhing man. My heart was racing, my head reeling—I had no idea what was happening. And then, all of a sudden, I felt something I can only describe as a "disturbance in the force". A ripple of energy, or perhaps just an instinct compelled me to turn and look over at the black gristmill. There was a figure standing just outside of the old building. A short, broad one, dressed in all black, staring intently at my father.
I couldn't contain myself. Before I even knew what I was doing, a sharp cry of joy had left my lips, and I found myself stumbling over to the other person on wobbly legs. Every step hurt, straining muscles I didn't even know I had. I stopped a few feet ahead of the newcomer. The gun dropped from my trembling hands, sinking into the snow, and I followed shortly after. Before my upper body could hit the ground though, I felt strong arms wrap around me, holding me up. This was like a fairy tale. Sure, I was bleeding and aching all over, and the tongue that moved to lick the warm tears of my face was rough and forked, but still. This was like a fucking fairy tale.
Jacek pulled back, tilting his head at me with a lopsided smile.
I mirrored the movement before everything turned black. X Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7 Part 8 Part 9 Part 10 Part 11 Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16 Part 17 Part 18 Part 19 Part 20 Part 21 Part 22 Part 23

2023.02.03 01:12 MagicMayhem117 Surviving Ch.22
David was excited.
He knew, logically, that it was just a job. Millions of others throughout the universe did the same thing he would be doing every day, and many considered it a dead-end job. But that knowledge did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm.
It had taken years of preparation, of studying, of working harder than everyone around him to be the best at what he did. Someday, he vowed, he’d be working to help astronauts land on Mars. His knowledge would be used to make progress that would be remembered for centuries.
About a year from graduating, however, his goal had changed; a whole damn Federation of alien civilizations released thousands of terabytes of information on a single unassuming October night. He was ecstatic, and later immensely surprised at the apparent fact that few cared. Almost immediately he found a group of people who, like him, were ready to scour every little bit of information that was available. They weren’t friends, per se, but it was perhaps the closest thing any of them had. From then on it was like a challenge to see who could get off the planet first.
David still remembered the countless hours he spent scouring documents, reading and translating scientific papers from advanced beings long gone. He remembered visiting the brand-new stations to catch glimpses of the technology he’d only seen in diagrams, and e remembered booking one of the first commercial trips to space.
He remembered being the only one who knew how to operate the ship when the pilot fell unconscious.
How could he not? It was that little stunt that had caught the attention of some alien higher-ups. And so, only a few months of classes and exams later, he was working as an information analyst on a goddamn spaceship. Full of aliens.
Did he mention it was in space?
He wasn’t the only one. Rebecca, one of his
rivals, had been just as invested as he’d been; though, while he was interested in the technology, she’d been fascinated with the people. It made sense; thousands of new languages, cultures, and customs to explore, complex systems of bureaucracy that had somehow evolved almost parallel to our own. And when she ultimately used what she knew to prevent what could have caused a war, she was practically forced into an ambassador position. Unfortunately that meant she was stuck on Earth most of the time, a fact that David took pleasure in rubbing in her face.
His job was surprisingly simple considering the classes he’d been forced through just a few months ago. All he had to do was monitor the scanners, making sure to receive any communication attempts and checking for any abnormalities. The ship he was on was only a scientific exploration vessel, but apparently that didn’t do much to deter pirates. So, in the case of some unknown signals coming from seemingly empty space, he’d let someone know.
He’d already spent a week getting trained, though to be honest all he needed was a day. It was almost insultingly simple. Nevertheless, today was his first official day, and nothing could take that away.
He practically pranced into his workspace, cheerfully greeting coworkers who looked a few harsh words away from collapsing. Sitting down, he spun slightly in his chair and worked on setting up a simple alarm system.
It had occurred to him almost immediately, when he’d been shown where he’d be working. He didn’t say anything, though. It was better to do it on his own and get paid for doing nothing; all it took was about a half hour of coding, setting up the system to alert him whenever anything was detected, and he was free to explore the ship.
The windows were truly stunning. There were a few specific sections of the ship designed to lock down if the glass broke, made for viewing space without interruption. They were strategically spaced out around the ship to give an almost 360° view of the stars, and due to the pull of gravity to the floor of each one it gave an illusion of hanging upside-down on many occasions. David’s favorite was when they were orbiting a planet; having to crane his neck upwards to look at a mass that big is uncomfortable, sure, but also incredibly surreal.
Luckily they’d arrived at a planet very recently. They wouldn’t stay long; the objective was to do a quick scan of the surface for a missing ship, but that had been done the day before and nothing was found. They would stay just a bit longer, though, in case of any wayward signals, but it almost seemed as though most were eager to leave. Like they didn’t expect to find anything, and the longer they were near it the more nervous they became.
The planet itself was beautiful. Around the same size as Earth, it was covered in significantly less water. A coworker had uneasily informed him that it ran underground for the most part, only feeding into the plants with roots deep enough to reach it.
It was because of this, apparently, that it had next to no grass. Instead, the surface was filled to the brim with trees of various types. You could tell the different biomes apart by their shade of green, and just as easily you could see where there was no water by the large expanses of pink-ish dirt. It was fascinating, and part of the reason he’d leapt at this job. If David could keep this pay to just sit for hours and look at stars and planets, then why do anything else?
He stayed there for a long time, eyes roving over the slowly shifting mass of dirt beneath him. Or, above him. Whichever one was true at the moment.
He was snapped out of his reverie by a shrill sound coming from his pocket. Alarmed, he rushed back to his… well, office would be generous. His desk. Sure enough, an alarm had popped up on his monitor, showing a repeating signal coming from the surface of the planet. He let out a sigh of relief. If it were pirates it would have come from space, and he was not eager to find out what a ‘space pirate’ looked like.
Assuming it was a stray signal from one of the few research buildings amongst the forests, he let it through without a supervisor present.
This was a mistake.
Immediately a beeping sound filled the surrounding area. Not very loud, but insistent. And it was one he recognized.
Working fast he recovered the coordinates of the S.O.S. signal and pinned it to his desktop. Before he left, he wrote it down on a pad of paper and slipped it into his pocket along with the exact time. Just in case.
Now he only had to make the insanely long trek to the management offices, on the other side of the ship. He groaned slightly.
It was only when he was halfway to his superior’s office that he noted how odd the situation was. First of all, the radar had scanned the planet’s surface and found nothing. Even stranger, an S.O.S. could only have come from another human, or at least someone who had already worked with them extensively. That, however, could be ruled out when considering how long terrans had been an official part of the Federation.
His deliberations paused when he reached his boss’s office. It had to be located fairly centrally, since it was difficult for their species to navigate in higher gravity. The door swung open before he even knocked.
“Ah, David. It’s great to see you. What can I help you with?” Nervously, he scooted forward a bit before speaking.
“Well, sir, uh, I have a few questions. About the ship we’re looking for.”
If he was surprised he didn’t really show it. Or maybe that was just David being socially inept. Regardless, he took the silence as an invitation to keep speaking.
“Were… were there any humans onboard?” He waited for an answer, and it came slowly.
“Yes. It was an education ship, meaning it carried a class and its respective teachers. If I recall correctly, there was one young terran onboard. Why do you ask?” David swallowed.
“Well, sir, it appears we have received a small message from the surface of the planet. I asked if there were any terrans because the message is in a language we call ‘Morse code’. It was quite obviously a distress signal, and I was wondering if it could be the same ship. Perhaps they crashed, and the survivors are trying to contact us. Whatever the case, I have the coordinates so we can go investigate–” David was cut off abruptly when his boss stood up. Any kindness had been wiped off of his face.
“David,” he started. It sounded like a warning. “Do not make jokes about serious matters. This is a professional vessel, and it will not be tolerated. Is that clear?”
“But- but sir! It’s not a joke, I swear. Look, come back with me, I’ll show you the beeping. I know it may not sound real, but the specific sequence of beeps is a typical way to communicate distress. Please.”
He looked at David, face still unreadable, before gesturing for him to walk.
Practically sprinting out of the room he rushed back to my chair. Thanks to his weirdly long legs he kept pace easily, and it wasn’t long before they got back.
To a very conspicuously quiet monitor, and a blank screen.
At this point David was sweating bullets. “Sir, please, believe me. Here,” he said, digging through his pockets. “I have the coordinates written right here. Something must’ve happened to the signal.” He shoved his hand forward, trying to hand the paper over, but his boss barely glanced at it. He looked back at David, and it seemed to him like his expression softened.
“Look, David, it’s your first day. We all make mistakes. Just make sure not to do it again.” He turned to leave, but his head was still facing him. Weird. “And one more thing. If they truly crashed onto that side of the planet they’re as good as dead. All of them.” He left.
“Wow, buddy, not at all suspicious or ominous,” David mumbled to himself. Then he sighed. He needed to investigate a bit.
Search results for the planet they were over all looked perfectly normal, at first. Until, that is, he looked at the dates. Everywhere he looked the articles were dated at over ten years, at least. Studies on the soil, fauna, settlements, and even some opinion pieces were all there in abundance, but none were recent.
He tried again, this time removing whatever restrictions had been put in place by management or any government entity. He’d picked that up from Lilia, who’d spent more time studying the programming language behind the files than their actual content. Apparently cyber security in space is a joke, which didn’t make much sense.
This time the results were a bit more fruitful. A lot of results were questions or posts on a semi-obscure forum-based social media, most of them wondering about the large amount of disappearances in the area. Many users had dubbed it the ‘pink zone’ because of the dirt, and because of an apparent dust storm that would appear over the area periodically. One very recent post referred to the Bermuda Triangle as the ‘pink zone of Earth’, and there seemed to be more questions than answers regarding the planet as a whole. It was difficult to differentiate fact from fiction with so many stories, and pinpointing an actual beginning was nigh impossible.
Frustrated, David decided to take a walk. Of course, he made sure his alarm system was still working, but he needed to clear his mind. The first place he thought to visit was, of course, the enormous window overlooking the planet.
It had been several hours since the signal had been sent, and in that time the ship had almost completed a full rotation around the surface. A part of David hoped he’d see something, though he knew that if scanners hadn’t caught anything it was unlikely he would.
What he saw on the horizon, however, was decidedly something.
A wall of dark clouds blotched out a large portion of land. On the edges it looked slightly pink, likely because of the dust that had been kicked up, but it was dense enough to block out most light.
At least, that was what it looked like at first.
David sat there for hours, transfixed, but the longer he looked the more he realized something wasn’t right. At first he’d been shifting his gaze around, taking in every small part that he could; but when he kept looking at one spot in particular, it became clear.
There was a pattern. Every fifteen minutes or so the swirls of air would run through the same paths, just shifted slightly in a single cardinal direction. It was smooth, sure, but unmistakable. Soon he was finding the same cloud repeated dozens of times in the enormous space, and noting the exact time it took between each one.
Rushing back to his desk he wrote down everything he’d figured out. He attached posts, compiled evidence, and added on the identities of the missing students. It had to be obvious. Enough doubt and nobody would feel inclined to do a thing about it.
Pressing send, he quickly scrolled down and selected a contact he knew well. Putting the phone up to his ear, he spoke before she could get a word in.
“Hey there, Rebecca. How do you think the army would feel about their first rescue mission in space?”
AN: Sorry for the delay on this one, had a college admission exam on Tuesday. Here's a quick important interlude to kick off the conclusion, hope you enjoy!

2023.02.03 01:06 rsnorunt Critique My Itinerary! 20 days in UT/AZ in March
Hi all! I'm looking forward to seeing the parks in UT/AZ! In addition to the national parks, I'm also looking forward to seeing national monuments and other public land. In particular, I'm really looking forward to:
- The rim-to-river-to-rim hike at the Grand Canyon.
- Seeing Zion canyon at full lushness (ie, why I'm doing this in spring)
- Exploring slot canyons
- Seeing a diversity of national parks (I have a kind of silly goal to hit 30 in one year - I'm at 16 so far)
- Seeing GSE and Bears ears (They're so controversial I want to see what they're like)
- Hiking a lot (ideally 10+ miles a day for non-rest days)
I know that I'm just getting a taste of what Utah has to offer, and I'm excited to make more trips here in the future. Here's the itinerary (questions at the bottom):
Thurs: Drive Day (8h)
- Morning: Drive from SF to Bakersfield, Fresno Flower Trail
- Afternoon: Drive to Alabama Hills, Red Rock Canyon SP

- Afternoon: Rhyolite Ghost town
- Night: Boondock in Mt Charleston
Sat: Free Day in Vegas (2+ hrs)
- Either hang out in Vegas, or skip to the next day and get an extra day in Zion
Sun: Drive to St George (4 hrs)
- Morning: Valley of Fire State Park
- Afternoon: Snow Canyon State Park or maybe Kolob Canyon
- Night: Boondock on blm land north of Virgin

The trip is planned to start the first week of March. I plan to sleep in my car most of the time, with some stops at hostels or hotels to socialize, rest, and shower. I'm a relatively fit man in my mid 20s, and I'm an avid hiker, but I've never backpacked before and don't intend to start doing so here. I tend to do very long days when I camp, like waking up at 5 am and sleeping at 8 pm. I'm constrained more by money than time. I've done long parks road trips like this before, but this will be my longest and farthest from civilization so I'm a bit nervous. Questions I have:
- Is this itinerary too rushed?
- How can I reduce the amount of driving? What should I cut? What should I add?
- Is this trip too early? Will I have to deal with too much snow?
- Is the scenery here too same-y? I like a lot of diversity in my trips, and tend to prefer forests to deserts (though I'm willing to be converted)
- I drive a 2wd, regular clearance hatchback. Will I run into too many problems?
- Any recommendations for socializing? I'm pretty extroverted, and usually start suffering after 3-4 days without substantial conversations. Unfortunately, I don't have any friends along this route, and there aren't really any cities for most of it. I'm definitely that guy who tries to talk to people on the trail, but I find it hard to get the longedeeper conversations I need.
- Any safety recs? I try to hike more crowded trails when I'm alone in case I get hurt, but there seem to be a lot of beautiful but remote trails here.
Thanks for the advice!

2023.02.03 00:48 Lonack [The Arcani] - Chapter 10
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" A deep voice asked from behind him.
Lonack spun, his dagger seeming to leap from his belt into his hand without a thought. The point was poised between him and a hooded figure standing near one of the pillars just inside the circle. They seemed tall, though the heavy cloak hid his features. The voice had definitely been masculine. So deep Lonack had felt it in his chest as much as heard it.
"My apologies for trespassing," Lonack said after several seconds passed. The figure stood half a dozen long strides from him and he hadn't heard a sound from their approach. "I do hope I haven't given offense."
"Only so long as your intentions are pure," the hooded figure said. There was a sense of amusement to his tone. "Put the pig sticker away. I intend no harm."
Lonack hesitated, but complied. Slowly. He still kept his balance on his toes, refusing to be caught off guard. The figure reached up and lowered the hood from his head. An older man. Not quite passed his prime but definitely not at its peak. Salt and pepper sprinkled his firey red hair and beard. But the eyes were odd. A deeper green than the grass in the midst of summer. They almost seemed to have a glow to them.
"Might I get your name, good sir?" Lonack asked.
"I don't wish to lie to you, Tiberius," the stranger said, "so no. I don't think you may." He then stepped into the circle and took a seat on the bottom most step, sighing to himself and leaving himself seated with his back to Lonack. "It's beautiful here. I don't get to sit and enjoy the woods often." He reached a hand out next to him and patted the step, not looking back at Lonack.
Lonack looked about the circle, wondering what type of trap this could be. He searched the tree line, trying to spy shadows in the woods or hiding against the stone pillars, but there was nothing. Just the sound of birdsong. This person had used his name so casually that it shook him. The hand patted the step again. Patient but insistent. He descended the steps and sat next to the man, more than an arm's length between them. The older man sighed, seeming to revel in the fresh air around them.
“Help me to understand why a man of such promise would choose this path. Hiding in the woods. Tending sheep.” The stranger’s voice was as much felt as it was heard because of how deep it rumbled. “You are a man of duty. Of honor. Why?”
“What business is it of yours?” Lonack demanded. “You won’t tell me who you are but you demand answers to questions nobody has a right to ask.” He bit down a sudden anger. The stranger looked him in the eye, those faintly glowing green irises searching him. They held no hostility. There was a gentle kindness in them.
“Would you believe me if I told you I am a dead man?” The stranger asked.
“Considering you are sitting within arms reach, no.”
“Then you aren’t ready for any answers I could give you.” The stranger said, finally turning his eyes from Lonack. “The world is much bigger than the nations of man. I fear that fact has been lost upon you all.”
You all? Lonack thought to himself.
“You seem to be very, uh, informed about me.” Lonack said. The stranger nodded. “Are you one of them? The shadows soldiers whisper about? An Arcani?" The stranger didn’t answer. He smiled instead to himself.
“Yes and no.” He said enigmatically. Lonack stood up, frustration boiling over, and started to pace.
“So you’re here to either execute me or drag me back.” Lonack said.
“Neither.” Said the stranger. There was a warm chuckle in his voice. “I simply seek to understand."
“What is there to understand! I fled. I broke my oaths. I’m to be sentenced as a deserter. Am I to be executed or to be enslaved?” Lonack found his voice much louder than intended. He was shouting at the still seated older man. “I grow tired of this. Tired of waiting. You’re here now, so do it, whatever it is.”
“Why did you flee?” The stranger simply asked.
“How could I not? How could so many others not? We executed…” Lonack realized his tongue was getting ahead of him, and slammed his mouth shut.
“You executed orders?” the stranger asked. His tone never wavered. It was gentle, prodding without prying.
“We executed civilians.” Lonack snarled. “We scoured the land clean of its inhabitants. We should have helped them.”
“You did them a mercy,” The stranger said.
“We did them injustice. The Isilithi ruined them. We could have helped.”
Lonack’s mind flashed with the horrors of it. Isilith, the nation of slaves. They had sent their forces into Kashar and taken the border city of Brolyn. A defensible city with plenty of good land to keep it supplied, the Isilithi had invaded and enslaved its occupants in what would come to be called The Breach. A beachhead into Kashari lands through which they could march an army. They held the land for a decade, a natural land barrier that could withstand the regular campaigns against them. The populace had been in chains for a decade, starved and addicted to the taenon leaf that drove them to madness. They would loose hordes of the desperate slaves on any legion that attempted to push The Breach.
Lonack and his brothers in arms had been under the command of a young Legate. An expeditionary force that had been compiled of three legions had been gathered, led by Halathus Zarcone. A brilliant young commander, and one of the youngest Legates in Kashari history.
The legions had waded into The Breach with the crushing might Kashar is renowned for, and Halathus had proven himself a capable commander. They had pushed through the hordes to Brolyn, capturing the walls the same day they arrived. What they found was that the Isilithi had withdrawn, leaving the mass of wretched slaves behind them penned into the city like cattle. They fought and clawed at the legion in desperation, mad beyond reason and starved to the point that anything would suffice.
The horrors haunted his dreams. Even the waking ones he found himself having on peaceful days. Emaciated skulls biting and clawing at him. Their nails grew long and horn-like from scrubbing in the fields, and their saliva was black from the leaf. A single bite would cause infection and fever that could kill a man. The city was burned to the ground instead of reclaimed. By the time they were done, none of the villages had been left standing either. The taenon crazed mobs had been hunted to the last. Lonack had done as he was ordered, as had everyone else. They had not even attempted to detain or help. Villages were burnt if they harbored even a single crazed taenonite. No passion. No mercy. No attempts to reason. A death sentence to lance the boil that had besmirched Kashar’s border.
“Desperate people sentenced to death. More run from their homes for protecting them. Whole populations dead by our swords. I joined the legion to protect. I joined to keep my home safe. Not to slaughter those who had been wronged or who were trying to protect their own.” Lonack was shouting again. The old man weathered it in peace. “So I say again. Am I to die, or to be a slave for trying to keep what dignity I have left?”
There was a long silence between them. Lonack found he was breathing heavily, his muscles tensed. The old stranger simply looked him over some more. There was a light to his eyes that had nothing to do with the glow, but rather one of understanding as if he were looking upon a new man.
“You are a good man, Tiberius.” The stranger finally said. “I truly hope you see it. Enjoy your time in Golthar. I fear circumstances may make that difficult, but you are a man who has earned his rest. When the time comes, I know you will step forward and do what you must. When you do, I will find you again, and we will have more to discuss. But for now, rest and find what peace you can. All of us must carry the stains of our past.” The stranger stood, dusting his cloak and shifting it comfortably about him as he climbed to his feet gracefully.
“Wait, that’s it?” Lonack demanded. “An ominous message and no name. Who in the hells do you think you are?” His voice shook with emotion.
“I am but a shadow of what I once was,” Said the stranger. “And I am a precursor to what must be.”
With that, he turned and strode towards the edge of the circle. Lonack lunged forward, hand extended to grab the cloaked shoulder and force the man to answer him.
Lonack’s hand never connected. There was a bright flash of green energy, and the next thing he knew he was staring at the sky. Flat on his back with his hand burning from the almost contact, his head spun. When he was able to lift it, the stranger had gone. He was alone, surrounded by the silent pillars of marble without even the sound of birdsong. His ears rang from whatever the man had done to him.
He took his time returning to camp. His head spun and he didn’t wish to get lost as darkness approached. The others had the energy of a party as they cooked up the day's hunt and shared stories, but Lonack didn’t have it in him to join them. He went to his bedroll before the night had set in, and found sleep came easy for the first time in quite a long time.

2023.02.02 23:23 RecuseRangers235 Shock Of The Studio
If you asked me what my dream job was when I was little, I would have said working at a movie studio.
I was eighteen when I changed my mind I lived with my mom but not my dad.
Because my dad worked at a movie studio, he wasn't a director or anything important.
But he made all the set parts and even knew how to make robots and androids for the movie.
Dad never really showed up at home except during Christmas or Thanksgiving or when it was my birthday.
But then I got the surprise of my life.
I was sitting on the couch in the living room playing my video games when my phone rang.
Confused I picked it up and my eyes lit up when I saw it was my dad calling.
"Dad, your calling, are you all right?"I shouted, probably blowing his ears out.
"I'm fine Alexander, calm down. I was wondering if you wanted to come see me for a few days," my dad said.
"Wait, you mean come to the studio?" I said.
"Sure, I asked the boss and he said if it was fine, just ask your mother about it and if she says yes, I'll see you soon," the dad said.
Then he hung up. After that, I got up and headed into the kitchen where mom was.
I told her about what my dad had asked me to do and she told me I could, and I gave her a tight hug.
Anyway, a few days later, I was all packed up and ready to go see my dad. Now, even though I was eighteen, I could drive.
Before I left, mom told me to mind my manners and listen to dad.
I nodded, telling her I would before getting into my car with all my stuff, and then I headed off.
As I was driving, I was wondering what kind of movies were going on at the studio.
Dad had helped make all the most popular movies that were playing right now.
Mostly, Dad was behind the camera because he did all the set and background things for the movies.
I once told my dad I would make a movie when I was older, and I tried my best, but it never worked out.
A few hours later, I got to the Killer Wood Studio, which was the name of the studio my dad worked at.
When I got out of the car, I grabbed my bag and then I turned around, nearly jumping out of my skin.
A grown lady wearing glasses was standing there and she was smiling at me, showing me very bright teeth.
"Greetings, are you Alexander Prescott?" The lady asked me
"Um-yes ma'am," I said, still in a bit of shock.
"Oh thank goodness your father sent me to come get you because he was doing a project and couldn't get away from it," the lady explained.
The lady introduced herself as Sofia, and then she told me to grab my stuff and then told me to follow her.
As I followed behind her, Sofia started talking about all kinds of things that happened at the studio.
"This studio first opened in 1920, and it was the very first movie studio to make a scary movie," Sofia explained.
My dad had told me the history of the studio, but I didn't want to be rude, so I just let her ramble on.
As we were walking, I noticed one building that looked old and broken down, and then I stopped.
" Hey Sofia "What's that? I don't think I've seen that before," I said, pointing at the building.
Sofia turned around and gasped when she saw what I was pointing at.
Then, before she could say anything, she hurried off, and I followed behind her, running to keep up.
"What is it, Sofia?" I asked as I got up right next to her.
"You don't want to go in there, young man; that's the robot graveyard," she said.
Then, before I could ask her what that was, she told me where the studio area where my dad worked was.
Then she hurried off, and then I headed into the building, and the smell of paint hit me in the nose.
"I need more blue paint," I heard a voice say.
I followed the voice and then noticed my dad, who was painting, and he had two other guys with him.
I watched as they were painting a background, and then dad turned around, and when he saw me, he smiled.
"Alexander, you made it," he said as I ran over to him.
Both of us hugged each other, and then I looked over dad's shoulder and saw the background he had been painting.
"What do you think?" He asked, grinning.
"It's awesome," I said, grinning at it.
"Well, since you're here, you can help me with cleaning up," my dad said, grinning at me.
I rolled my eyes and smiled and then headed over to start cleaning things where I noticed one of the guys.
He then introduced himself as Cal and smiled at me as he helped me clean up the mess.
While I was cleaning a paintbrush, I was thinking about what Sofia had said.
" What are you thinking about, kid?" Cal asked.
"Well, this lady I was with told me to stay away from this place called the robot graveyard," I said innocently.
All three of the men gasped, and I looked at all of them confused.
" What did I say that was wrong?" I asked nervously.
"You don't know what the robot graveyard is, do you?" Cal asked me
"Cal, don't you dare tell my son what that place is; he doesn't need to know," the dad said.
"All right, Mr. Buzzkill, you're the boss," Cal said, raising his hands.
After a few minutes, I was done cleaning, and Cal and the other guy told my dad that they were going to get some lunch.
After they were gone, Dad sat down at his desk and then looked up at me.
"I'm guessing you want to know what that robot graveyard thing is, don't you?" Dad asked me
"I mean, it would be nice to know," I said, leaning against the nearest wall.
"Well you see, the robot graveyard is where the owner of the studio puts all the robotics and machines that don't work," dad explained.
"Wait there just put in some random building and not thrown in the trash" I said annoyed.
"I agree with you, son, but I can't argue with the boss and some of my coworkers say that the place is haunted," dad said.
"Woah, hold on a second, haunted how?" I asked, looking at him.
"There's this one robot we tried to use for a movie but it never worked right, so we tossed it into the robot graveyard and some of the workers say that robot was haunted," my dad explained to me.
"Didn't you make that robot?" I asked him.
"Of course I did and no, I'm not a witch or a wizard, so I don't know what happened to that robot, but enough about that. How's your life going?" Dad asked.
I told him everything that was happening in my life and he smiled at everything, even the bad things that had happened.
After that, dad told me he was heading to the main studio and asked if I wanted to come along.
So I followed behind him as he headed to the main studio, thinking about that robot graveyard the whole time.
When we got to the studio, I slapped my hands over my ears. It was very loud inside the place.
Dad didn't bother saying anything, so we just headed off to the watching area with the camera guys.
They all smiled when they saw us, and I watched the scene that was going on in front of us.
The actors were having a big fight scene, and I was smiling like a baby who had a whole bag of candy.
"Cut!" A loud voice shouted, making me jump.
A man was sitting in a chair, and then he turned around and glared at us.
"Patrick, I thought I told you not to come in here when we're filming a scene," the man said.
" I'm sorry sir, but my son is here visiting me and he wanted to see the movie being made," dad said, grinning nervously.
"Well, you have to leave because we're very busy," the director said.
With that, my dad took my arm and led me out of the room, telling me that we were going to head to the hotel.
He told me that he slept there when he was done with work, but when we got to our room, I started texting on my phone with mom.
"Hey kid, I'm going to check on the background for the movie. I'll be back in a few minutes. Just stay here," he said.
I watched as he walked out of the room and then he was gone. An hour later, the sun was starting to go down and he was still gone.
I got bored of using my phone, but then I figured out something I could do, and I grinned a smile covering my face.
I was going to check out that robot graveyard, but then I got up and grabbed my phone before heading out of the hotel.
I then headed to the studio and then noticed the gate was locked, and then I actually climbed over the gate and landed on the other side with a small thump.
Running off, I headed to the robot graveyard, and when I got there, I noticed that the building was locked and I sighed softly.
" Darn it," I grumbled under my breath.
I then looked around and then felt around in my pockets, wondering if I had anything that would pick the lock.
But I didn't then I looked down and noticed a bright green hairpin and smiled as I bent down to pick it up.
I then started fiddling with that lock on it before it popped off and the door opened.
"Bingo!" I said, looking around.
I realized the room was super dark and I felt around on the wall, noticing there was no light switch.
So I took out my phone and then I flipped the flashlight on my phone on and looked around.
I noticed there were machine parts everywhere, and then I started walking deeper into the building.
As I walked past a pile of old robot parts, something grabbed my ankle and I jumped.
When I looked down, I noticed half a robot sticking out of the pile
"Please help us," it said in a tiny voice.
My mouth fell open. Maybe it was because this part of a robot was talking to me, but still I couldn't help it.
"With what?" I asked nervously.
"Save us from the robot master," the tiny voice said, sounding scared.
"W-why?" I said, looking at it.
"Because he'll kill us all if you don't," the little robot said.
I headed off and then I saw it. Standing in the middle of this room was a giant robot.
It was wearing a trench coat and it looked like it was also human. It then turned around and I almost dropped my phone.
I then noticed it was missing an eye, so where an eye should be was a black hole.
"Do you like what you see, human?" It asked in a dark voice.
"Who are you?" I asked, backing up
"I'm the robot master and everyone here listens to me, including you," he said, pointing at me
"But I'm not a robot," I said, looking at him.
"I don't care," it hissed.
Before I had time to run, the robot master snapped his fingers and then I heard this horrible noise.
I turned around and saw robot parts like arms or legs and others heading straight towards me.
"What the heck?" I shouted, jumping as an arm shot towards me.
"Kill the human if you have to! " The robot master was shouting.
I kept jumping over and ducking under robot parts. I had noticed that it was a bit brighter in the room.
I then ran off and kept running as I heard robots shouting and laughing, but then, like an idiot, I tripped and landed on the ground.
I turned around, looking over my shoulder, and saw the robot parts and the robot master heading right for me.
I backed up until I hit a wall. I couldn't move. I didn't want to. I was willing to let these robot parts kill me.
"Stop!"I shouted at all the machines.
I then slapped my hands over my eyes, waiting for the robots to do their thing, but nothing happened.
I took my hands off my eyes and noticed that the robot master and the robot parts weren't moving; they were frozen in place.
"What the-" I mumbled under my breath.
I then got up and ran out of the robot graveyard, and I noticed it was getting to be night time.
Suddenly, I bumped into someone. At first, I thought it was the robot master, but then I noticed it was Sofia.
"Alexander, what on earth are you doing here?" She was shocked to see me.
I didn't tell her. I just looked at the robot graveyard, wondering if the robots were going to follow me.
She must have seen me looking at the robot graveyard because she gasped in shock.
"You didn't go in there, did you?" She asked me
I nodded nervously before standing up I started to head off, but she grabbed my arm.
Sofia said, pulling out her phone. "We have to tell your dad, I'll call him."
"No, you can't!" I shouted at her in fear.
Then, before she could do anything else, I ran off, heading to the gate so I could go to the hotel.
But I stopped when I saw Cal and the other painter guy in front of me, and they both had their arms crossed.
"Alex, you can't leave until your dad gets here," Cal said.
"But I need to. I'm going to get tracked down by those horrible robot parts," I said in fear.
I turned around to run the other way, but Sofia and someone else were blocking the way.
In fact, it seemed everyone else who worked at the studio had made a circle around me, so I couldn't run away.
Then they all started talking at once, telling me I couldn't leave and not to worry and that my dad would soon be here.
I slapped my hands over my ears, screaming at everyone to stop talking and shouting, but they wouldn't.
Suddenly, a jolt went through my body and my hands fell off my ears.
I then shut my eyes and bent over halfway breathing heavily. I couldn't move or speak. All I could see or notice was darkness
" Everyone out of the way, give me some space," a voice behind everyone else said.
Mr. Prescott shoved past the crowd and looked at his work. He sighed softly.
"What happened to the android?" Sofia asked Mr. Prescott.
" I'm not sure, Sofia, but I'll take a look at it really quickly," Mr. Prescott said.
He then walked over to the android and lifted the T-shirt up from its back.
It revealed a closed compartment on the back, and Mr. Prescott popped it open before looking around.
The wires were in a few of the plugs, but they looked fine, and Mr. Morris gasped when he saw the problem.
"What is it, sir?" Cal asked Mr. Prescott.
"It's main computer chip is fired, that's why it shut itself off," Mr. Prescott said.
" Do you think you can fix it, sir?" Someone else asked Mr. Prescott
" Yes I can, but Sofia, can you call my wife and tell her the android got shut off?" Mr.Prescott said.
Sofia nodded and then ran off to go call Mr. 'Prescott's wife, and then he looked at Cal.
"And Cal you help me fix this thing It's going to take too long with just one person," Mr. Prescott said.
Cal nodded and watched as Mr. Prescott grabbed the android and threw it over his shoulder.
"Back to the drawing board," he muttered as he walked off.
