2023.02.03 05:53 Meezy73 I realized how much my dad really tried to clip my wings

To preface this: I have ASD/Possible ADHD (Going to look if I actually have that in a few weeks)
I was talking with my mom and she told me how my dad prevented me from going to the doctor as a child and I had a really bad fever, he wouldn't allow her to take me because she had class but she saw I was really sick. Shouldn't a child's life be more important than a class? I was really puzzled by that.
I remember as a kid, I wasn't allowed to go outside that much or play because I would get hurt. In fact, they allowed me to use my video games and watch TV as a distraction. I remember being grounded a lot and not allowed to go outside and whenever I was on a family outing, I was treated like a prisoner. I tried to tell him how I couldn't make friends or a girlfriend and he would tell me shit like: "YOU'RE AT SCHOOL TO LEARN, NOT TO MAKE FRIENDS!!!" and "MAYBE YOU SHOULDN'T BE SO WEIRD" I
He called me a loser, even after I did something noteworthy and good for a person in my situation. He did that a lot and it made me believe that I was one.
Pretty much, my MP3 player and my computer and google street view and urban exploration became my world. I wasn't even allowed to play MMORPGs or video games after a certain point because they said it would be a "distraction" and they wanted me to have good grades in school and conform to their expectations. When they would take the mp3 player and internet away, it was like prison. I actually hid a spare MP3 player from them at one point then the taking away electronics stuff stopped. Funny enough, it was like prison and with my dog, I only was allowed to walk her for an hour. This continued until college, where I went to live on campus then flunked out and went to CC and Uni. From there I decided to just keep my distance from my family as much as I can. Funny thing is, that they wanted to kick me out when I was 18, but they didn't allow me to get a job or anything until after high school/going to college.
I tried and failed to make friends and form relationships, I was bullied and ostracized and outcast, even in my family. I was a loner. This continued through middle and high school and even college. He would get on me for not doing enough but when I actually tried to do something, my dad and his ex wife would shoot me down and keep me in a gridlock. Every time I went out with friends or be social, I would feel lonely.
I was really embarrassed and ashamed of my family life that I decided to fly alone (no looking for a girlfriend, no new friends, no going out to meet people), something that hurt me in the long run. I'm trying to figure out social skills and catch up which is the most frustrating and unfair thing that's ever happened to me, even though I'm free from his grasp and influence.
The last act of him trying to clip my wings was just before he got diagnosed with cancer. I was in a program/internship to make it to a corporate job in a major company and my dad's ex wife made an objection because she worried excessively about her dog (Which I didn't mind, I loved that doggo and I miss her) and my dad tried to discourage me from being in the program, so I left. I regret that a lot because I could've left my dead end job and make more money and save to get out on my own. (I got fired by the dead end job later the next year).
After my dad died, I felt resentful and angry that he would hold me back so much. Me forging my own path was the scariest and intimidating thing I have ever done but I'm much better now. But their imposed isolation on me and keeping me away from people my age has really damaged me... It's unfair, it's a tragedy, and it makes me angry because I am alone most of the time and stuck in my head a lot. I am doing really well for a person my age, I have an apartment, I do have friends online and some in real life and I live on my own and I pay my bills but the cost of that is what makes me want to cry.
Anyways, I just wanted to share my experience and what I realized. Thanks.

How to Use Generative AI Voices Ethically For Business in 2023
https://preview.redd.it/t3upq476awfa1.png?width=1116&format=png&auto=webp&s=bdd0b07799dc0cb7def498e6a46c7a2ab48fdd67
The end of 2022 came on the heels of AI technologies experiencing widespread adoption due to the stunning popularity of OpenAI and ChatGPT. For the first time, AI achieved mass-market appeal by proving its utility and value in creating successful business outcomes.
Many AI technologies that seem like a revolution to everyday people in 2023 have actually been in active use by big businesses and media for several years. Join me as I take a closer look at the technology powering these solutions, in particular, generative AI systems for voice cloning, its business benefits, and ethical approaches to using AI.

How does voice cloning work?

In short, voice cloning enables one person to speak using the voice of another person.
It uses generative AI technology to create recordings of a person’s voice and use them to generate new audio content with that same person’s voice. It essentially allows people to hear what someone would have said, even if they didn’t say it themselves.
On the technical side, things don’t appear to be very complicated. But if you dive a little deeper, there are some minimum requirements to get started:
  1. You need at least 5 minutes of high-quality recorded audio of the source voice to clone it. These recordings should be clear and free of background noise or other distortions, as any imperfections could affect the accuracy of the model’s output.
  2. After that, feed these recordings into a generative AI model to create a “voice avatar.”
  3. Then, train the model to accurately reproduce speech patterns in pitch and timing.
  4. Once completed, this trained model can generate unlimited content using the source voice of any other person, becoming an effective tool for creating realistic-sounding replica voices.
This is the point at which many raise ethical concerns. What happens when we can insert any text into another person’s mouth and it’s impossible to tell if those words are real or fake?
Yes, this possibility has long since become a reality. As in the case of OpenAI and ChatGPT, we are currently facing a number of ethical issues that cannot be ignored.

Ethical standards in AI

As with many other novel technologies in their initial stages of adoption, the main threat is creating a negative stigma around the technology rather than acknowledging the threats as a source for discussion and valuable knowledge. What is important is exposing the methods that bad actors use to abuse the technology and its products, apply mitigation tools, and continue learning.
Today we have three layers of frameworks for ethical standards pertaining to the use of generative AI. The national and supranational regulatory layers are in their initial stage of development. The policy world may not keep up with the speed of development of emerging technology, but we can already observe the EU leading with the EU Proposal on AI Regulation and The 2022 Code of Practice on Disinformation that outlines the expectations for big tech companies to tackle the dissemination of malicious AI manipulated content. On national levels, we see regulatory first steps by the US and the UK in addressing the issue with the US’s National Deepfake and Digital Provenance Task Force and UK’s Online Safety Bill.
The tech industry’s layer is moving faster as companies and technologists are accepting this new reality as it pertains to emerging technologies and their impact on societal security and privacy. The dialog on the ethics of generative AI is vibrant and has led the way towards developing industry initiatives for Codes of Conduct around the use of generative AI (i.e. The Partnership on AI Synthetic Media Code of Conduct) and ethical statements released by different companies. The question is, how to make the conduct practical? And, are they able to affect products, specific features, and the procedures of teams?
Having worked on this problem with a number of different media and entertainment, cybersecurity, and AI Ethics communities, I have formulated a few practical principles for dealing with AI content and voices in particular:
  1. IP owners and the company that uses the cloned voice can avoid many of the potential complications associated with using original voices by signing legal agreements.
  2. Project owners should publicly disclose the use of a cloned voice so that listeners will not be misled.
  3. Companies working on AI technology for voice should allocate a percentage of resources to developing technology that is capable of detecting and identifying AI-generated content.
  4. Labeling AI-generated content with watermarks enables voice authentication.
  5. Each AI service provider should review each project of its impact (societal, business and privacy levels) before agreeing to work on it.
Of course, the principles of ethics in AI won’t affect the spread of homemade deep fakes online. However, they will push any projects in the gray out of reach of the public market.
In 2021-22, AI voices were used in different mainstream projects that introduced hefty implications for ethics and society. These included cloning young Luke Skywalker’s voice for the Mandalorian series, AI voice for God of War 2, and Richard Nixon’s voice for the historic ‘In Event of Moon Disaster’.
Confidence in technology is growing beyond media and entertainment. Traditional businesses across many industries are using cloned voices in their projects. Here are a few of the most prominent use cases.

Industry use cases

In 2023, voice cloning will continue its rise alongside various businesses set to reap its numerous benefits. From healthcare and marketing to customer service and the advertising industry, voice cloning is revolutionizing how organizations build relationships with their clients and streamline their workflows.
Voice cloning benefits healthcare professionals and social workers that work in an online environment. Digital avatars featuring the same voice as medical professionals foster stronger bonds between them and their patients, raising trust and retaining customers.
The potential applications of voice cloning in the film and entertainment industry are vast. Dubbing content into multiple languages, children and adult additional dialog replacement (ADR), and an almost infinite array of customization options are all made possible by this technology.
Similarly, in the operations sector, AI-driven voice cloning can yield excellent results for brands in need of cost-efficient solutions for interactive voice response systems or corporate training videos. With voice synthesis technology, actors can expand their reach while increasing their ability to earn residuals from recordings.
Finally, in advertising production studios, the emergence of voice cloning has helped significantly reduce the costs and number of hours associated with commercial production. As long as there’s a high-quality recording available for cloning (even from unavailable actors), ads can be produced quickly and more creatively than ever before.
Interestingly enough, enterprises and SMBs can take advantage of voice cloning to create something unique for their brands. Big projects can realize their most ambitious plans, while small businesses can access previously cost-prohibitive scale models. That’s what true democratization means.

Wrapping up

AI voice cloning offers businesses game-changing benefits such as creating unique customer experiences, integrating natural language processing capabilities into their products and services, and generating highly accurate impersonations of voices that sound completely real.
Businesses looking to maintain their competitive edge in 2023 should look into AI voice cloning. Companies can use this technology to unlock a variety of new possibilities to win market share and retain customers while doing so in an ethically responsible way.

Prosecutors say Murdaugh’s motive lurks in a history of theft. Can they tell the jury?

BY JOHN MONK, TED CLIFFORD, AND BRISTOW MARCHANT - The State - 2/2/23
[Video Link]
A South Carolina judge on Thursday heard gripping testimony from accused double murderer Alex Murdaugh’s longtime best friend and a top official from his former law firm about how the former Hampton attorney lied and allegedly stole from clients and fellow lawyers.
One prosecution witness, Jeanne Seckinger, a longtime finance officer at Murdaugh’s former law firm, explained how Murdaugh repeatedly violated the firm’s long history “of trust and brotherhood” with his lies and thefts of more than $2 million.
Chris Wilson, Murdaugh’s longtime best friend, wept with sadness and anger as he explained how Murdaugh used him in a 2021 scheme to pocket $792,000 in fees from Murdaugh’s law firm, in the process bilking Wilson of $192,000.
“He was one of my best friends,” said Wilson, who spent more than an hour on the witness stand Thursday, at times dabbing his eyes with a tissue. “I thought he felt the same way about me.”
Asked by lead prosecutor Creighton Waters how, sitting before Murdaugh, he feels now, a downcast Wilson replied, “I don’t know how I feel now, Mr. Waters.”
Both testified Thursday out of the jury’s presence at Murdaugh’s double-murder trial as Judge Clifton Newman mulls whether their testimony and others can be shared with a Colleton County jury as motive for murder.
Murdaugh, who hails from a prominent family, is accused of killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, the night of June 7, 2021, at the the family’s rural 1,700-acre rural Colleton County estate.
He has pleaded not guilty, and faces life in prison without parole if convicted in their deaths.
For now, the 12-member jury has only heard hints from prosecutors about Murdaugh’s alleged money schemes.
On Thursday, after hearing from Seckinger and Wilson, Newman appeared receptive to the state’s arguments. He indicated late Thursday he was willing to let the jury hear information about Murdaugh’s money schemes, but said he might decide Friday how much of it could be disclosed.
Prosecutors want to introduce the financial evidence to show the jury a motive for why Murdaugh would seek to kill his own family members. Murdaugh’s attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, say there’s no connection between the murders and Murdaugh’s unraveling financial problems.
“He was burning through cash like crazy. (That) $792,000 was gone in no time at all,” Waters explained to Newman Thursday. “This is really about the fear of being about to be exposed. On June 7, at that point of time, he was out of options.”
Only by knowing the specifics of Murdaugh’s extensive embezzlement schemes — and the looming threat of disclosure by his law firm and attorney Mark Tinsley who had named Murdaugh as a defendant in a civil lawsuit — Waters said a jury would be able to understand why Murdaugh “was doing these things and why he was out of time.”
Waters told Newman he wants to introduce additional evidence to the jury that would show how Murdaugh engineered a $4 million theft from the estate of his late housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, and how Tinsley was seeking $10 million in damages from Murdaugh at the time of the murders.
“For a jury to understand what is going on, they really have to understand the full picture,” Waters said. “When the hound is at the door, when Hannibal is at the gate, violence happens.”
Griffin told Newman Thursday the connection is illogical and should not be admissible under South Carolina’s rules of evidence, which don’t allow the jury to consider prior alleged criminal conduct.
And in any case, Griffin said, the imminent death of Murdaugh’s father, Randall Murdaugh, had already begun to generate considerable sympathy from his law partners and others, sympathy that would have delayed any investigation from his firm, which already had a long history of forgiving his financial improprieties.
And, Griffin said, Mureaugh was in the process of refinancing various properties and that refinancing would have releived financial pressures.
“It’s all just a theory,” Griffin said. “There’s no facts.”

LAW FIRM CEO CONFRONTS MURDAUGH ABOUT MISSING MONEY

The state on Thursday first presented testimony from Seckinger, the chief financial officer who oversees the bookkeeping at the Parker Law Group, Murdaugh’s former law firm known as PMPED.
Seckinger testified that Murdaugh was forced to resign from the law firm his great-grandfather started because of evidence he stole millions of dollars from his law partners over a number of years. Seckinger testified that for years money had gone missing around Murdaugh, who also had a habit of charging inappropriate personal expenses.
Her testimony offered a glimpse into the inner workings of one of the Lowcountry’s preeminent personal injury firms, where partners were paid a salary of $125,000 a year before receiving what they earned from lawsuit settlements and jury verdicts.
On one occasion, Seckinger testified that Murdaugh billed a client for a private flight to the Florida Keys. But his actions at the close-knit law practice that his family founded, and where he was a well-respected and profitable lawyer, were regularly brushed under the rug after he paid the firm back.
Each December, PMPED tried to clear out all of their cash reserves in order to minimize taxes, according Seckinger, who has known Murdaugh for more than 40 years and worked at the firm since 1999. That meant that partners often would have to loan money back to the firm at the beginning of the new year so that they could cover basic operational expenses.
Attorneys were expected to turn over all fees and expenses received from clients to the firm, and all payments were expected to be made out to the firm, Seckinger testified. Not doing so would be “stealing,” she said.
At first, Seckinger said she was merely suspicious that Murdaugh was trying to hide money from a civil suit where he was a defendant. The suit stemmed from a 2019 fatal boat wreck Paul had been involved in that killed 19-year-old Mallory Beach.
It was well known around the office that Murdaugh was being sued and that the plaintiffs wanted to get a hold of his finances, Seckinger testified.
In May 2021, Seckinger’s said she grew concerned when she learned Murdaugh had not properly deposited money from a settlement, leading her to believe he was either withholding a check made out to the law firm or had the check inappropriately made out to himself.
At the time, Murdaugh claimed that he was just trying to put some money in Maggie’s name and was buying a settlement from Forge, a structured settlement company used by PMPED, as a favor to one of its executives, Michael Gunn.
Gunn, who also testified Thursday, is a principal at Forge, a structured settlement firm regularly employed by Murdaugh’s former law firm. Murdaugh is accused of directing checks to a Bank of America account he controlled that appeared to belong to Forge. It did not.
Seckinger, however, was uncomfortable with Murdaugh using the firm as a vehicle to hide his money.
“That would be wrong and we would not want any part of that,” Seckinger testified Thursday.
But in June, Murdaugh’s paralegal brought another urgent matter to Seckinger’s attention: They were missing a $792,000 fee check from attorney Wilson, who had just completed a case with Murdaugh.
While the firm had received a check for expenses, they had not received the check for fees, which usually arrived at the same time, Seckinger testified.
“At that point in time, no one was saying they thought he was stealing from the firm,” Seckinger said, adding but there was concern that he was “sheltering money from being disclosed.”
On June 7, 2021, hours before Maggie and Paul were shot to death at the family’s remote estate, Seckinger said she “made another run at finding out from Alex if we had any information (about the check).”
“He was cleaning out a filing cabinet outside his office, and he saw me and said, ‘What you need now?’ And he gave me a dirty look, not one I’d ever received from Alex,” she said.
Inside Murdaugh’s office, Seckinger said she told Murdaugh she “had reason to believe he had received those fees himself, and I needed proof that he did not.”
Murdaugh assured her he that the money was simply in a trust account because he was considering how to structure the settlement. The meeting ended abruptly when Murdaugh received a phone call that his father had been moved into hospice care.
Immediately, Seckinger said that she dropped the matter of the missing check and started talking to him as a friend.
“We quit talking about business,” Seckinger said.
Later that night, Murdaugh’s wife and son were found murdered, and the inquiries were put on hold. It also postponed actions in a civil lawsuit over the boat crash, which could have required Murdaugh to disclose financial information.
“Alex was distraught, upset, not in the office,” Seckinger testified. “We didn’t want to harass him when we didn’t think it was really missing and had a year to clear it up, so we didn’t harass him over it.”
By Sept. 2, 2021, Seckinger looked up payments made to Forge in the firm’s ledger.
She found Murdaugh had been writing checks to a Bank of America account for Forge. The account holder was Murdaugh.
The next day, Seckinger said that she and the firm’s partners, including Murdaugh’s brother Randy, convened at a partner’s home and agreed that Murdaugh needed to be terminated. When he confronted, Seckinger said that Murdaugh confessed.
“We made him resign,” Seckinger said.

FRIEND SAYS MURDAUGH ADMITTED TO ‘STEALING’

In reality, Murdaugh had already received $792,000 from his best friend, Wilson.
In early 2021, the two friends worked together on a personal injury case that resulted in $2 million in fees, which Wilson was responsible for distributing to the other attorneys on the case.
Rather than send the money to Murdaugh’s law firm, however, Murdaugh convinced Wilson in March 2021 to write $792,000 in three separate checks to Murdaugh personally. Wilson testified he was told it was a structuring procedure he was unfamiliar with, but that he “trusted his friend” of some 30 years.
“As far as I knew, the firm was aware the the monies had been being paid to him, that he had were being put in annuities,” Wilson testified.
But Murdaugh later wired the money back to Wilson saying he had “messed up” the fee structure and requested Wilson send the full amount to the law firm, even though Murdaugh told him he could not recover $192,000. Wilson said he sent the missing money to Murdaugh’s firm from his own personal account.
Prosecutors believe the whole procedure was meant to throw suspicion off of Murdaugh for stealing funds from his law partners. Even then, Wilson remained unsuspicious of Murdaugh.
He rushed to his friend’s side when his wife and son were killed. It was only when the law firm contacted him about the money that he was told Murdaugh had been stealing from clients and the firm.
On the morning of Sept. 4, 2021, Wilson saw his old friend one final time at Murdaugh’s mother’s home, when he asked him for an explanation.
“He broke down crying,” Wilson remembers. “He told me he had a drug problem, that he was addicted to opioids, that he’d been addicted for 20-plus years or so. And he told me that he had been stealing money.”
“I was so mad, I don’t remember how it ended,” Wilson said. “He sh-- me up. He sh-- a lot of people up.”
Later that day, Wilson said he learned Murdaugh had been shot on the side of the road, in what turned out to be a botched attempt by Murdaugh to have himself shot in an insurance scheme.
“I thought for sure he had tried to kill himself,” Wilson testified.

THE FIGHT OVER MOTIVE

The question of the financial motive may prove to be one of the most important battlegrounds in the Murdaugh trial.
Griffin and Harpootlian have argued that it was impossible Murdaugh would kill his wife of almost 30 years or Paul, “the apple of his eye.”
Rogan Gibson and Will Loving, two friends of Paul’s who considered the Murdaughs a second family both testified Wednesday that they could think of no reason that Murdaugh would commit murder, despite claiming to hear his voice on a video taken from the kennels just minutes before the killings.
If the prosecution is able to get witnesses, including Seckinger, Wilson and Gunn, on the stand, the jury will hear the details of more than 90 different alleged alleged financial crimes across 17 different indictments. They would present what Waters has called an “unbroken chain” of alleged lying and theft as well as the cynical manipulation of friends, clients and family going as far back as 2011.
Murdaugh’s defense attorneys have strenuously objected to the introduction of this evidence. They have argued that introducing unproven allegations would violate evidentiary rules, delaying the trial and unfairly prejudicing the jury.
Griffin, a veteran white-collar defense attorney, has worked to stymie the prosecution’s efforts to introduce evidence. The defense has made it clear that they will not stipulate to allowing the evidence to be admitted and they appear to be willing to take up Newman’s challenge that every financial witness undergo cross-examination before taking the stand.
Griffin has argued that the state’s use of these witnesses violates two key evidentiary rules:
▪ 403a — preventing the inclusion of evidence that might unfairly prejudice or confuse the jury due to creating delays
▪ 404b — preventing the testimony of past bad acts unless it meets a strict set of criteria, among them a proof of a common scheme, intent or narrow definition of motive
In cross-examination of Seckinger, Griffin highlighted just how many people were involved in the law firm’s investigation of Murdaugh’s alleged theft. In many cases, she had no direct knowledge of the thefts, only what had been told to her.
Isn’t that hearsay, Griffin asked Seckinger.
“It’s not hearsay if they said it to me,” Seckinger replied, snappily.
Seckinger has previously testified to her confrontation with Murdaugh at the November 2022 federal trial of former CEO of Palmetto State Bank Russell Laffitte, who was convicted on bank fraud and conspiracy charges related to his handling of Murdaugh’s accounts, often making money transfers from client’s accounts at Murdaugh’s request.
In the small world of Hampton County, Seckinger is also Laffitte’s sister-in-law.

Yesterday I took a 50 from a lady and informed her of the policy and that she would need smaller bills next time but I would make change this time. She called 3 hours later and tried to argue with me and hung up on me when I told her "it's corporate policy and I'm not going to argue with you about it ma'am". Any similar stories?

2023.02.03 05:22 lateral_mind How to proceed? Trespassing arrest, no legal representation given.

Arizona. I was arrested for criminal trespassing at a train station. (3rd degree, 13-1502 A2 https://www.azleg.gov/ars/13/01502.htm) What are some options moving forward?Or any thoughts about a Criminal Trespass Lawyer vs Public Defender?

Story Here, or skip to read about my Lack of Legal Representation.
The incident at the Station is clear, the arrest is a bit harder, and I am asking for Body Cam footage to get the dialogue exactly.
Map https://imgur.com/a/Ybr3j7q
~10 p.m.
I walk on the Train Station Property (Green Line). I go to the loading platform/sidewalk of the Train Station, and start taking a photo. A utility golf cart drives up on me.
It parks in front of my camera, blocking my photo and my closest exit. Headlights are on me.
I stand up and start removing my headphones while the driver of the cart steps out.
He greets me. I greet back.
Him: What are you doing?
Me: What am I doing?
Him: Yeah, What's uh--- what's with the camera?
Me: (I don't know who he is) Oh, I don't believe I have to answer that question.
Him: Okay. Well as of right now you are trespassing. You cannot be on the platform here [or along the front of the Visitor Center.] points East at the platform and continues... And you can't be taking photos of the Visitor Center, right now.
Me: Great... I say this and immediately begin exiting via the Purple line. Our conversation takes less than 20 seconds. I want nothing to do with this guy, and he still has not identified himself.
Him: As I walk past him, he tells me. You can take pictures of the Visitor Center during normal visiting hours from 8 to 5. (He might have said 9 to 5, which are the Sunday hours.)

I do not turn back to face him, respond, or stop, but I note that he has invited me back.
I continue exiting the Blue Line, and do not stop. I take no photographs. My destination is East to San Francisco St, then South across the train tracks.
I go up a ramp exiting onto the public sidewalk and turn South, walking past the San Francisco St parking lot entrance. The guy is now standing on the East-side of the Visitor Center next to his golf cart. He waits there for a bit... ~96 yards away.

Another train crosses San Francisco St. heading East and blocking my path. This train takes about 2 minutes to pass. It is very long.
I wait with two other people on the sidewalk, facing the train. I make no attempt to walk back on the property.
He starts walking towards me and I see him reach for something.
As he gets closer I decide to take another photo of the Station, still on the sidewalk. The train is still passing.
I kneel down to take a photo of the Amtrak Station. He stands about 5 yards from me now, and I stand up and face South again.
Me: Long train...
Him: No response. He is on the phone; I assume it is with the Police and he is making a complaint. I would later find out that he told the officers that saw me on the train tracks down the road, and that I put something like bottle-shaped on the tracks. (My camera?) He also said I was VERY confrontational.
The train passes. I immediately walk South two blocks where I continue taking photos.

~10:15pm
The City cops detain me. I answer minimal questions. Then they arrest me, and transfer me to the Sherriff ran jail.

My thoughts:
I could have probably handled the situation better, but I had no idea who the guy was.
At no time did I admit talking to the guy, or being at the train station, to the Police.
There were no Signs for Trespassing at the Station that I remember. I didn't see any on Google Maps, either. The gates were open to the platform so it wasn't fenced off. I also left at the first sign of a possible violation.
However, they will most likely get me on the Trespassing charge, unless there is something they messed up on. Is there something to the guy inviting me back during normal business hours? I mean, he Trespassed me, and then immediately invited me back for pictures during normal business hours... Then when I was off the property he phoned the Police for Trespassing. ??
Lastly, I was held overnight until I could see a Judge to set a court date and to set terms of release. It was done via CCTV, and I believe it was called an Initial Appearance Hearing. https://www.coconino.az.gov/542/Initial#:~:text=Initial%20Appearance%20Hearing,charges%20against%20him%20or%20her
I was not told about the Hearing, but I deduced that I might see a Judge. A few hours before the Hearing, I told one of the Sheriffs, "If I am going to appear before a Judge I would like Legal Representation." She acknowledged my request and told me she would pass it on and that I would be "brought out". Although I had ample access to a phone, I had no numbers to call a lawyer. In the end I was not given legal representation.
The night before, another person asked for a Lawyer from a different Sherriff and he replied that "THIS IS JAIL. LAWYERS DON'T COME HERE!" Later on I heard him telling a co-worker "He keeps asking for a lawyer because he's a f--king idiot..."
Not sure if there's anything to that.
Sorry for the long post. Thank you all for reading, and I welcome your insight!
Edit: made it tldr-ish

2023.02.03 05:10 VirtualChest2893 I need understanding on what I should expect from my manager; and what is appropriate for them to do.

In the time I’ve worked with this company, my manager has done a number of things that I’ve been uncomfortable with, and I genuinely have no idea if they’re truly inappropriate or simply not-ok in any way. I’m fairly inexperienced with working in any corporate setting, and don’t know if it’s simply uncomfortable or truly problematic. I’ll make a list on some of the big hitters, and give as much context as I can.
For reference, I work in a retail clothing store “Up system” is really just taking turns… it basically means the first employee clocked in, takes the first sale, second takes the second sale and so on, until everyone has a turn, and the rotation repeats
This manager has:
•decided I am too revealing, and purchased me Walmart camisoles to wear, to push me to cover up more (I’m midsized, but have a larger chest, making it difficult to find approximately fitted clothes that show absolutely no cleavage, but make a priority of not wearing anything too revealing, to adhere to the dress code. On multiple occasions I’ve even seen photos of other employees, and even my regional manager wearing garments cut lower than mine. )
•granted a time off request to a coworker(call them X), then scheduled me for that day, although I expressly stated that I did not have availability, because I did not have childcare for the day. The day is one that I do not commonly work, on the date of a large event many businesses would be closed for, and individuals I would trust my child with already had plans/obligations.
•when I came back to discuss being scheduled for the date above, and again stated that I would not be available, they ended up getting coverage from a different coworker, but stated that I would have to use a full day of PTO to stay within the budgeted hours for the week. The manager prioritized giving X a full week’s schedule, then pushed the full day of PTO on me, rather than granting the X the day off and having X use PTO to account for it. When I tried to address that it didn’t seem right, the manager said that they’d “meet in the middle” and split the PTO between X and myself “to keep the peace” and discouraged me from speaking to the regional manager. So effectively I lost PTO because a coworker requested a day off, despite me being able and willing to work my full and usually scheduled week.
•does not regularly help on the floor with sales, and will remain in their office -often on personal phone calls- until a guest walks in that they recognize. When this happens they will immediately come out of their office, and take the sale, stating they missed a few turns in the “up system.” This is almost always with a guest who regularly makes sales at our highest commission bracket , so it seems very intentional.
•refuses to work Sundays. Our store has few employees, and when the person usually scheduled for Sunday needs the day off, the manager will look for coverage from each other employee, and if it can not be covered the manager will decline to adjust the schedule or strongly suggest that the employee reschedule their needs/plans, and does not even seem to consider working the day themselves unless it truly comes down to doing that, or simply leaving the store closed for the day. The one time in my whole career here that I have known of the manager working a Sunday was because one coworker was out of country, one was on a wedding that day, and my child was I’ll and awaiting results of a covid test, so I was quarantining with my family. This person is not religious, so there are no law based exemptions I’m aware of
•guests occasionally call the store to order items, hoping to receive the free standard shipping that is only offered for in store purchases. We do not have secure phone lines or the option in our POS to manually enter credit/debit card details. Instead of directing the guest to the website or to the guest service phone number, they will encourage the guest to purchase an e-gift card, then have the guest provide the gift card details and place an order through our in store order entry as though the guest is present, and always places the transaction under their associate number, no matter who’s turn it is with the “up system”

2023.02.03 05:08 VirtualChest2893 [MT] I need understanding on what I should expect from my manager; and what is appropriate for them to do.

In the time I’ve worked with this company, my manager has done a number of things that I’ve been uncomfortable with, and I genuinely have no idea if they’re truly inappropriate or simply not-ok in any way. 2023.02.03 05:03 TheVonSolo TIL Timmy and Tommy will give you the boot at 10 sharp

Went in at 9:59 to sell some random gifts that my neighbors gave me. Cashed out and was about to inquire about the water machine and they were all: “it’s after hours” and next thing ya know, I’m outside. They did the thing I always wanted to do in retail but had to follow corporate “the customer is always right” crap. Lol

2023.02.03 05:02 Koalainslowmotion My manager fires people over text.

He’s a new manager and has made so many changes since he got hired and wasn’t around until three months ago. We opened in March last year. There is a rumor going around that he wants to get rid of any of the OG’s and anyone who has a second job. Being where I live it’s almost impossible not to work two jobs, and double whammy, I also helped open the restaurant. He has cut our hours significantly (I’ve been getting about 18 a week when I used to get 40, so yeah a second job is definitely necessary at this point) and yes I’ve been begging for extra shifts. And unluckily for my coworker she had a family passing and I picked up all of her shifts to help out but I know It’s going to go back to two shifts a week when she gets back.
He fired one of our bartenders over text messaging and I think it’s super inappropriate, especially because he brought up the second job situation during the firing. Now I’m worried that every time I get a text it’s going to be the same, I get anxiety whenever I see his name pop up on my phone because of this rumor and I’m one of two of the last people who opened the restaurant. He’s cut the other employees hours also to one day a week and he’s worried that he’s next.
To expand on this rumor, we were told that he doesn’t like not having a hand picked crew. We (the last two of us) are trying to uphold the corporate standards and he’s trying to make changes that don’t make sense. Basically wants complete control of every little detail and doesn’t like when we say “that’s not how corporate wants it”
I want to go to HR, but I’m worried about the retaliation that could happen when he gets pulled into the office about what I have to say because… it either came from me or it came from my coworker and I don’t want to put him in that situation either.

2023.02.03 04:55 Slight_Garbage5622 The Complex (Ch1)

Post PoP, don't read if you care about spoilers
Molly caught herself on the rail with an audible thunk. The slippery coating of ice covering the staircase beneath her reflected the green hue of dumb energy she had surrounded herself with, just incase her slip had turned ìnto a tumble. She took a moment to steady her feet and glanced behind her. A snowy mountain range stretched out before her, an ocean of evergreen trees with no civilization in sight, save for the cold metal staircase she was climbing. In the sky, she spotted Darkstar's drone zooming back and forth between Molly and the compound, ready to alert her if any people were headed her way. She flashed it a quick thumbs up, gripped the straps of her backpack, took a deep breath, and continued her climb up the staircase.
It took nearly ten minutes for Molly to finally reach the end of the staircase. It should have taken her only 3 or 4, only she had kept slipping and nearing falling on the way up. She shivered at the thought of going back down, but she had a job to do. Boss was relying on her, after all. Molly looked up at the compound she had only ever seen in aerial photos from the drone. It was a massive thing, nearly eight stories tall and wide as a city block.
Only one road led to this remote part of Taiga country, a dirt road veering off the I-15 highway. That road was nearly a 3 hours drive and led straight to here, although all the maps said neither the road or the compound existed. It was stuffed full of security cameras and hidden checkpoints to warn the gray building ahead of any vehicles headed in.
It had been a lucky break to find the unused dirt trail that led to the back access stairs. Sylvie had been the one to make that discovery, about a week prior, figuring that there must've been at least some smokers among the 20000 workers in the very health conscious research complex. Giovanni had hoisted Sylvie up onto his shoulders and chanted celebrations, then, much to Sylvie's protest.
Molly smiled at the memory, before casting a silence bubble around herself and heading off to the gray building ahead.
"Okay Beartrap, guard patrol ahead. Looks like Major Nose Hair and Corporal Albino Dino." came Darkstar's voice from the headset.
"Thanks" Molly replied, heading into a bush for cover. Major Nose Hair and Corporal Albino Dino weren't their actual names. None of "Giovanni's Evil Organisation" (name still pending), plus Sylvie and Phoenica, knew any of the guards actual names. They had spent about two week cataloging every person and thing they could find through the drone and scouting missions, which had frustrated Giovanni in particular as he wanted to simply burst through the front door "Bulldozer Style!™". He had consoled himself by giving all the guards they spotted funny nicknames and insisted on using them in every strategy meeting. Sylvie hadn't approved but he was heavily outnumbered, given that about 8 of the 10 people in their group were either Giovanni's minions or Honorary minions. Molly thought the names were better than whatever they actually were anyways.
"Looks like they've gone past" Darkstar's voice called, pulling Molly out of her thoughts. She leaped from the bush and sprinted to the rusted back door as fast as she could, making sure to dumb the pressure of her feet down so as to not leave visible footprints.
"Employees Only!" The sign on the door read. Molly ignored it and poured Trixie and Rick's "Hacker" potion on the keycard reader. It sparked and fizzled for a few seconds before the door swung wide open.
"I'm in" Molly said into the earpiece, closing the door behind her. Now she just had to rendezvous with Boss and Trixie, who had already snuck their way in.
"Great job, Beartrap" said the man himself, "Me and Shortstacks are loitering in a staff break room right now"
"Just say 'in a', why'd you add loitering? I feel, like, soooo uncool now" said Trixie.
"Loitering IS cool!"
Molly felt she could almost hear Trixie's eye roll through the headset.
"Oi, the radio is for vital communications only. Cut the chatter" Sylvie's garbled voice interrupted.
"Radio? This is a phone call" Phoenica pointed out. Sylvie grumbled slightly, but seemed to accept the correction.
"Nerd" Giovanni muttered. Whether this was directed at Sylvie or Phoenica, Molly couldn't tell. Maybe it was both. She shook her head and turned on a makeshift bodycam feed for Darkstar's benefit.
The hallway was the same sterile gray as the outside of the building, though it was clearly made of drywall or plastic rather than the hard bricks and cement of the exterior. Harsh fluorescent lights blared above. Molly found it difficult to believe that people worked here, let alone did mentally intensive science here. Maybe the offices were nicer? She shook her head again, it didn't matter. She reached into her backpack and pulled out the crude map of what they thought the facility looked like. They hadn't ever been inside yet, and so were forced to try to extrapolate the interior by peeking in through windows form the outside. The map had many question marks on it.
"Which staff room?" She asked. Twenty thousand people worked here after all, it was so remote and secretive that some even lived here. It must've have had tons of staff rooms, the map alone had 4 marked.
"Second floor, it's next to a staircase marked B5- wha- hey! No, no, no Shortstacks! You're doing it wrong. Ya don't reach into vending machine from the bottom! That never works. Step aside, I'll break the glass" Giovanni replied. A thud sounded "Ow".
B5… Molly glanced around, a fire exit sign hung over the door she had just come from, but she saw no staircases. She gripped the straps of her backpack tighter and headed down the hall.
Door after door passed by. The map was already proving to be less than accurate. According to the crayon marking, Molly should have been standing in front of a storage closet right now, instead, she was standing in front of a conference room with giant windows! How did the two get mixed up? And wasn't there supposed to be a T-section to the left? That hallway led to a lobby- Wait… a lobby? A Lobby!
Molly froze, Darkstar's video delayed gasp followed. This had been a key point in all the strategy meetings. Lobbies meant people, people meant phones, phones meant guards. She had to get out of here. Molly zipped around a corner before anyone could see and doubled her silence bubble. She stood stock still, listening for any indication that she was spotted.
Nothing, she was in the clear. Molly let out a big sigh, then a groan. This was going to be a long day.
***
Sylvie mentally kicked himself. It had been his idea for everyone to go into the compound one by one, rather than as a group. He'd pitched it as a way to make it easier to hide from the guard patrols outside the building, but really it was self preservation. He was a hundred percent sure one of Giovanni's cretins "minions" were gonna screw up and he didn't want to be nearby when that happened. Now he was really regretting it. He hadn't accounted for how difficult it would be to regroup once they were actually inside. Now Molly was, according to the panicked directions from Darkstar, god only knows where in there and in 15 minutes it was his turn to go up. He hadn't expected the maps to be that bad!
He watched mutely as Fred (he refuses to address the criminals by their fake names) scampered up the staircase. Something about his worry must have shown on his face because Phoenica was prodding him.
"You, uh, look a little stressed" she said. For once her bells weren't jingling with her, they were lying on the snow. Stealth was the name of the game here, and her unnatural ability to sneak up on people would undoubtedly be helpful. Sylvie considered her for a moment. He remembered the day when he had first met Molly's other friends, Phoenica had immediately bombarded him with questions regarding his sheep summons and making soup opera-like imitations of "flirting". Then the twenty-something, who Sylvie had initially mistaken for a cardboard cutout due to thus unchanging smile, had asked to be his friend in the most threatening manner possible. In the present, Rick was trying to understand the concept of an evergreen tree while he waited his turn. Apparently Ocean country had no trees at all, and it had taken him a lot to understand seasonal trees. Sylvie remembered he hadn't responded and quickly sprung to life.
"Huh- oh yeah, yeah. I'm, uh. I'm good"
"Do not lie. Lying is bad!"
"You spent the last two weeks plotting to break and enter into a private research facility, you can't use morality as an argument"
"Yes, I can! Those are bad guys planning to do bad things. So I. am. justified" Phoenica puffed, then sighed. She tried a line her mother did to her, once. "You really don't want to tell me what's wrong?"
Sylvie looked down at his feet. He knew that tone, and that line. Those were the words of someone who wasn't going to let it go.
"It's just- something is going to seriously wrong, and its going to be my fault." He paused, trying to find the right words "Groups are inherently more stable than long individuals. They can react to situations with a wide tool set, cover each others weaknesses, splitting up like this-". He looked up, nervously tapping his finger against his leg. "It was my idea to split up, what if that-"
"Are you a seer?" Phoenica interjected
"Huh?" Where did that come from?
"Are you a seer?" She repeated
"Um, no?"
"Then how do you know something is going to go wrong?"
"Well, I-"
"It's going to be fine" She said, decisively. There was no real argument, no logical reasoning, just a declaration. It was enough. Sylvie nodded. Yeah. It's going to be fine
"A seer, you say?" Rick said suddenly. It seems he had finally internalized the concept of evergreens, or at least that they didn't taste good. "Did I hear that correctly good friend, you are a seer of prophecy?"
Sylvie opened his mouth to correct him, then paused. "Yes" he lied. "Partially". Phoenica gasped at the lie but said nothing.
"Wonderful!" Rick barked an unsettling laugh, something between a sinister cackle and his trademark cannon fire laugh. Black lightning danced through the air, and he rose his hands like a priest in the middle of an emotional Sermon "I Declare Befunuthemdul will lose the mayoral election!"
"I didn't think there was a Befunuthemdul running for mayor this term" Sylvie questioned
"Oh no, not this term. He hasn't even been born yet"
"So… when?" Phoenica tilted her head
"I don't know! My seer powers are only partial, you know"
Sylvie chuckled and glanced at his watch. Eight minutes. He steeled himself.
***
"Car crash, stay down. Two dudes and a dude-ette to your right" crackled the headset. Molly was internally panicking, she needed to find either boss or Rick soon or the plan was ruined.
The plan was fairly simple; Sylvie was supposed to make his way to the ventilation system, where he would spread his sleep powder across the entire facility while everyone else would shelter around Rick or Giovanni's Demon Aura Energy while Molly dumbed down the alarm.
Testing (which had consisted of slingshotting moldy garlic onto the rooftop) showed that the vents reached everywhere in the building relatively quickly. Workers and guards quickly leaving the building were complaining about "that horrible smell" within five minutes that day. The problem was, that test had added an extra route to the guards patrol route, with guards taking a detour to the ventilation to make sure no other nasty smelling objects lodged themselves in. That meant that once Sylve made his way up there, he had to enact his part immediately and couldn't wait for anyone.
Molly had crumpled up the map and stuffed it into her bag, it wasn't much use anyway. She was getting deeply frustrated at the lack of any signs or directional markings. Apparently this place expected you to memorize its layout. She must've passed dozens of hallways by now and still couldn't find a staircase. At the very least the walls were no longer that drab gray color. She must've wandered into a different section of the building. Oddly, she found that these hallways occasionally had benches on the side. They were the only thing that had an accent of a different color, splotches of blue over an ocean of white. She took a seat in one of them to catch her breath.
Footsteps rang out. Molly bolted up, her heart hammering as the footsteps drew nearer. She searched for any place to hide, the doors all needed keywords to enter and she only had three "Hacker" potions. Whoever was coming would have noticed the damaged keyword reader anyway. She definitely didn't have time to hide behind a corner, this hallway was far too long.
Deciding that standing was no longer an option, she slid underneath the bench and pulled her hood up, so her colorful and bright marshmallow hair was obscured (as well as the "glow in the dark' phytoplankton she harbored in exchange for a government paycheck). Her stomach churned as a pair of leather shoes came into view, lab coat trailing behind. She meekly held up a hand, ready to knock them out with a wave of dumb energy at the first sign she was spotted.
The shoes kept walking until it turned a corner and disappeared from view.
Molly let out a breath she hadn't known she was holding and slid out from under the bench.
"You alright Beartrap?" Darkstar's voice sounded. Oh right, the body cam would have only had a view of the floor that whole time. Molly nodded reassuringly, before realizing the camera couldn't see that either
"Yeah" Came her own meek voice. She winced at how breathless it sounded.
"I'm in" Car Crash called out. Good, at least everyone else was on schedule. Molly started to feel guilty, she was dragging everyone down again. She stood up, she had a job to do. Everyone else was doing there part so she had to do hers. Molly continued walking the halls.
___
This is a fanfic rough draft I wanted to get out there before I second guess myself and delete it permanently. Any advice on how to improve my, frankly, awful attempt at characterization would be much appreciated

2023.02.03 04:26 autiger8l5 National U.S. Strike

What is it going to take for the US to strike? Sorry if I shouldn’t be posting this here or asking this question here. Just wondering what’s it going to take? The cost of living is to high. The government leaders don’t seem to care. The corporations do not pay their fair share and are driving prices up for max profits. It’s just crazy to me. I’m not very good with words but when a carton of eggs cost as much as an hourly wage, I would think there might be some organization or something.
Can we please get something going nationally? Stand as one. I’m tired and just sick of it all. The time to strike is now.

(and he's got links! Not to the important stuff, but still)
Do tell - what is the important stuff? You're free to link to them if they're so important. In fact, you're encouraged to do so.
The issue has been known of for some time and written about far past 2005 - to current day, actually.
Chief of the SEC, Gary Gensler, recently said,
"When you place a market order - 90-95% do not go to the 'lit' exchanges - do not go to NASDAQ or NYSE, they go to wholesalers and they don't have order by order competition and part of that is because of what you just said; Payment-for-Order-Flow which is, yes, banned in the U.K., in Canada, and Australia and the European Union..."source
On a different, but related note...
Why Private Equity Firms Like Bain Really Are the Worst of Capitalism
And that’s when the fun starts. Once the buyout is completed, the private equity guys start swinging the meat axe, aggressively cutting costs wherever they can – so that the company can start paying off its new debt – by laying off workers and cutting capital costs. This process often boosts operating profit without a significant hit to the business, but only in the short term; in the long run, the austerity approach makes it difficult for companies to stay competitive, not least because money that would otherwise have been invested in expansion or product development – which might increase revenue down the line – is used to pay off the company’s debt.
It takes several years before the impacts of this predatory activity – reduced customer service, inferior products – become fully apparent, but by that time the private equity firm has generally resold the business at a profit and moved on.
You say...
But you won't be able to, because not only is this not a "serious fucking problem" it's actually not a problem at all.
That's patently, absurdly untrue and a bogus fucking lie, if not utter ignorance of the issue.
I see from your comment history that you're a lawyer.
And you post in the conservative subreddit fairly regularly.
Your credibility is low (in my opinion).
For more on the specifics of some of the bullshit happening we can read Cellar Boxing — The Predatory Secret That Wall Street Uses to Exploit an Infinite Money Glitch in the Stock Market This a light-hearted explanation of a ruthless tactic used by hedge funds and market makers to naked short companies to the ground and profit endlessly
Hu & Black's work on this subject make it clear that this is an on-going issue.
Empty Voting and Hidden (Morphable) Ownership: Taxonomy, Implications, and Reforms
The derivatives revolution and other capital market developments threaten this familiar pattern. Both outside investors and insiders can now readily decouple economic ownership of shares from voting rights to those shares. This decoupling - which we call the new vote buying - is often hidden from public view and is largely untouched by current regulation.
Do you really think this decoupling is made obvious by those able to buy the votes?
Here is one more quote related to the discussion:
The President of the NYSE, Stacey Cunningham, recently said,
"...stocks that have a high level of retail participation, the vast majority of order flow can trade off of exchanges, which is problematic," said Stacey Cunningham, president of Intercontinental Exchange Inc's (ICE.N) NYSE.
"That price formation is not really reflective of what supply and demand is," she said at a conference hosted by CNBC."source
In case anyone missed it, she said, "That price formation is not really reflective of what supply and demand is..." Go "frEe MaRkEt!"
Again, you're free to post some linked, sourced rebuttals at any time. You know, the "important" stuff.
To end: it should be noted that FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) and the NYSE are Self-Regulatory Organizations (SROs) - "We investigated ourselves and found no wrongdoing!"
More importantly, though, the DTCC/Cede & Co. is also an SRO (Self Regulatory Organization; see above sentence) and it is impossible (for "regular people" - for non-executives of the DTCC) to tell the extent to which FTDs and phantom/counterfeit shares (which are used in overvoting and debasing the very foundation of democracy and corporate voting) are laced throughout the system because they do not provide that information.
This wouldn't be a problem if they just came clean - which can be done in a safe and privacy-oriented way by publishing related raw numbers that can then be cross-referenced with public information and data. Unfortunately, I very seriously doubt they'll do that, because they've been covering up fraud, manipulation, crime, and utter nonsense - and the resultant suffering and pain of billions of people across the world - for so long they are morally fucking bankrupt, hypocritical cowards.

2023.02.03 04:09 Upsidedown_Sammie I’m not as successful as my friends and family.

I (17f) am in tough classes and I get good grades, but I have to work so much harder than many of my friends. In almost every class, I have to take extensive notes and meet with the teachers.
My brother is crazy smart and he didn’t really have to start studying until he went to law school. My dad is a lawyer and is the same way. My mom is an RN in the emergency room. Everyone in my family just seems so knowledgeable and I don’t know how they keep up with everything. Like, I barely see my parents reading but they always know the news. My brother was a frat guy and athlete in college but he knows literally everything.
My brother and dad played baseball in college, and my mom played basketball. Despite my parents being 5’9” and 5’11”, I’m topping out at 5’2”. I love soccer, and I spend hours practicing and studying outside of club/school practices. But the university I’m going to won’t admit on me on the team. I don’t resent them, I’m just disappointed in myself.
I just don’t know how everyone around me gets it done. Whether they’re family or friends, they’re all wicked talented even with minimal effort.

2023.02.03 04:02 DistanceBeautiful789 Pedestrian, just got hit by a car. I need advice/guidance on next steps.

Yesterday in the middle of the day during my work hours I was crossing the street to go to the other building of my job. It was my right of way and a car comes from behind me, and struck me from the back. My things go flying and I fell to the ground. I got up and moved to the curb and the passenger came to me apologizing. I have a picture of the scene and the plate number and phone number of the driver. A bus driver near the accident came to me and told me he has it captured on video and to reached out to get a copy for claim purposes. I went to the hospital and the doctor referred me to physio appointments and to lay off any strenuous activities for a few weeks until a follow up next month.
My body: I don’t have major injuries aside from soft tissue bruising and a sore hip with dizziness and a constant headache since the accident. I just get flashbacks now as it’s been difficult to rest without thinking about it’s. It gives me anxiety to think about crossing the street now for work everyday because it came from the back as a surprise.
As far as my possessions: My phone and MacBook both are damaged. My MacBook was in my backpack and I think it took most the impact from the car which is why I didn’t have major injuries. I need advice on how to add this to my claim. My phone is working but not fully functional. I’m using a spare for now as the screen is glitching for a while and I’ve just turned it off for now.
My friend and I have been researching on what to do and from what we’ve gathered I need to make a claim which I’ve now done. And the insurance company will get back to me in a few days.
What I’ve done so far is the following: 1. Made a claim with the drivers insurance company 2. Called an injury lawyer for advice (which in hindsight, I should have done before making the claim) 3. Made a police report. (Which ended up telling me it isn’t necessary because I have the drivers info?)
Now for my question: is there anything else I need to do? I know the insurance companies will always try to low ball you and I sensed that in my phone call with them. I so grateful I’m okay and get anxious and have a hard time asking for things even in times like these, so I would like to make sure I’m doing everything correctly. Any advice would be appreciated.

2023.02.03 03:40 RIcannabisTesting Cannabis Employment Testing

Does anyone know specifics around whether employers in RI can still test and deny employment for off-hours cannabis use now that adult recreational usage is legal?
If you Google it, there are a lot of results that say McKee signed a law that limits employers’ ability to test and discriminate against legal usage, but the language is also vague and makes it seem like employers still can.
Restrictions are still allowed with machinery and other risks to public safety, but what about generic desk jobs? Anyone know whether the largest corporate employers in RI would still deny employment for adult cannabis usage? The likes of Citizens, Amica, Fidelity, CVS, Hasbro, etc.?

2023.02.03 03:24 Tall__2460 My life doesn’t suck… my mind does

I’m just a teen and yet I’m ready to leave. I don’t come from a bad home, my parents are amazing actually, so I feel guilty for even considering the option to take my life.
I’m so stupid, I know I won’t make it to college, my dream is to be a lawyer in intellectual property. I got a 56% on my chemistry test today, I studied really hard.
I have obsessive compulsive disorder, I feel like nobody understands how harmful it truly is. My obsessions are destroying my life, my friendships, my family, everything. I’ve been on medication for it for a few months, and it’s doing nothing for me. My intrusive images and thoughts are horrible, I can’t sleep. I struggle with eating.
I have a passing out problem and now my eyesight is so bright I have to wear sunglasses inside school.
I want to go, I’ve reached out so many times, one time it made my situation much worse, it’s driving me to the point of suicide.
I have a spot picked out, but I’m terrified that the attempt won’t work, I don’t want to end up paralyzed. Teens survive a lot of crazy things.
I love my school so so much, my home too, but I’m trapped in a horrible mindset. I feel like no matter how much happiness from external sources I take, I’ll never be internally happy.
I’ve written many letters and I have my stuff ready. I was at a party 2 hours ago, I felt like crying, my thoughts hate me.
My friend group has a lot of drama going on, I’ve been unkind to an old friend because of this reason. I want to move into my school’s dorms, but it’s 12k next year… I have no money to do this whatsoever, that’s the only thing keeping me going though.
I’ve talked with counselors, teachers, friends, my parents, this has been going on for a year now. I don’t want to stick around, I can’t keep living as a failure with OCD.

2023.02.03 03:07 444Face Requesting advice for returning to work after “getting” someone fired [PA]

TLDR; Returning tomorrow to job where I contacted Corporate office and expressed frustration with how Manager / local HR handled harassment from coworker. Corporate conducted independent investigation and coworker was fired. Also, coworker’s boyfriend works in same plant. Happy Friday y’all 😩
I feel like right now with how messy things were and how messy things feel like they're going to be, it's important to include a bit of backstory / exposition, despite what I learned in creative writing :) here goes:
Coworker I had issue with is a woman in a predominately male workplace and has had several documented incidents with myself and other employees that involved HR. When HR investigates, coworker balls her eyes out about her history of drug addiction and being a battered woman. This has had such an effect on management that after one of these incidents I was told by my manager (who said this came from the GM at the time) to protect this coworker like she is our little sister. That was concerning on a lot of levels, but I tried to stay out of her orbit of drama the best I could.
About a month ago she told an employee, “to get the fuck out of HER office” and he replied, “I should smack the shit out of you”, at which point I felt the need to step in between them and physically restrain the male coworker. He was fired (correct action) and she returned to work, under the premise that was her final warning.
Last week I questioned her about something work related (our manager said he supported my decision to do so) and her response was to stand up, accuse me of calling her a liar and tell me to 1) do my job, and 2) get her her fucking orders. While I appreciated her ability to delegate in a clear and concise fashion, I felt she had crossed that point of no return, where she had been emboldened by the company’s inaction. After reporting the incident to our manager, two hours later I was questioned about what happened. After an investigation that took no more than an hour, I was told by HR that the incident was being documented and to return to work.
I genuinely felt like I was now in harms way being around this employee and I escalated the matter to our corporate HR offices. The majority of the email was focused on outlining and documenting the various forms of harassment (threats, sexual, racism) I was exposed to. However in doing so, I also mentioned I felt my manager and HR mishandled what was an ongoing situation; and listed all the times I had expressed concerns over this coworker’s behavior to my Manager and HR. I was pretty upset over this whole thing -so maybe this part wasn’t necessary- but I decided to bring up that this coworker openly and directly refers to our plant’s HR as “Dump Truck” as an affectionate reference to her backside. Might've taken that one back if I had the chance.. idk. Anyway, after a couple of days dealing with the Director of HR, who seemed to be taking my complaint seriously, I received a call from my General Manager informing me that the coworker in question had been fired. I sent an email thanking Corporate HR and also sent one to my GM as well.
While there was some relief in hearing this, I’m still concerned about returning to a job after a shake up like this. While my GM has been showing me signs of support; my Manager left me on read when I texted him last night to let him know I’ll be returning Friday, and if he’d like to speak about things, I’m available ahead of my return. That said, the two of us are supposed to meet with the GM tomorrow to discuss what I missed, replacing the employee that was fired, and how we’ll be moving forward.
Q: Any advice on how to approach this meeting? Do I address the 800lb gorilla in the room and suggest to clear the air with my manager in the event I come back to some hostility?
Also tomorrow I’ll be handing over hard copies of the harassing emails to the HR lady I reported.
Q: Is there an expectation for me to address anything with her? Should I apologize for mentioning to Headquarters HR why I felt a conflict of interest exits over the “Dump Truck” nickname?
If anybody would like to provide advice on what to expect, what is expected of me, and/or share similar stories and how they played out, those are appreciated as well.
Thanks for reading.

2023.02.03 02:40 AngrySlime706 Side career/income ideas related to Excel

I am very good at excel and want a side career or income doing Excel-related work. Let's not focus on just how good I am and leave it at that I am better than the typical professionals whose jobs depend heavily on Excel. Let's assume this is a fact for the purpose of not sidetracking this discussion:
I want some ideas on what are feasible ways to make a side career doing Excel-related work. My main interest lies in automation and establishing business workflows for smaller companies and possibly developing nimble applications for simple ERPs but not married to that. I have thought of many ideas such as teaching a class, give training workshops for corporates, freelance and whatnot but it never happened for various reasons, the main reason being I do not know much about how other people make careers out of Excel.
I have about 15 hours a week I can spare each week realistically. I have my own company in biotech, but the work does not involve Excel that much so my main purpose is to find a side job/activity that let me do more Excel in my life, because I find it fun and therapeutic for me.
Any ideas are appreciated. Ask me anything.

2023.02.03 02:23 NalpacaForever4451 First job in a creative field when ADHD+Cerebral Palsy rarely leaves any mental energy to create at all?

I just… feel like all the places that want creative writing is either a big studio that wants years of experience (I’m 18 and have never had a job or degree) or a university that wants a professor. ADHD is already challenging enough, but Cerebral Palsy is so fucking tiring to deal with and the meds that keep my muscles from spazzin out makes me drowsy, so I’m tired ALL the FUCKING time.
My ADHD (undiagnosed) makes it so I can barely fucking ever concentrate on anything that isn’t the absolute basic bitch barebones things needed for survival and college work. I enjoy college, but I want some way, somehow, to gain some experience writing for others.
Build a portfolio?
What’s that? All I have is this pile of things I made before my brain got consumed by school and adulthood, when I had 6 months to just work on something on and off after midnight in between bouts of going to school and watching YouTube for 10 hours.
Freelancing?
Nobody is hiring, and those that are already dogpiled by the 5-10 other people who most likely need the money and work because they aren’t supported by their parents or have their college paid for by scholarships.
Advertising?
I get like 500 bucks a month from Disability, I barely have any money to pay for shit.
Learn other arts, another language, or SEO/Copywriting? I already have classes to attend, and I can’t even get myself to watch a new anime, let alone learn a new skill.
Physical Labor? Oh yeah, I’ll get to that when I learn to stand unaided.
Wait until I’m out of college? I live in America, how tf am I supposed to live on my own when I can barely take care of myself when food and shelter are taken care of for me?
I’m so frustrated, so tired of feeling like a prisoner in my own body and having to pay over half my monthly if I want to get a formal diagnosis because no one will take Medicaid, I just want to make people happy and breathe some life into the stagnant world of corporate entertainment, FUCK!
How are y’all dealing with this?
