2022.12.18 19:30 IndieheadsAOTY The r/indieheads Album of the Year 2022 Write-Up Series: The Beths - Expert In A Dying Field
![]() | Hello everyone and welcome back to Day 18 of the indieheads Album of the Year 2022 Write-Up Series! This is our annual event where we showcase pieces from some of our favorite writers on the subreddit, discussing some of their favorite records of the year! As always we'll be running everyday through the length of December with one new writeup a day from a different indieheads user each day! Up today, u/mrdudesir talks The Beths's - Expert In A Dying Field. submitted by IndieheadsAOTY to indieheads [link] [comments] September 16th, 2022 - Carpark Listen: Bandcamp YouTube Spotify Background (Don’t worry, I’ll get to The Beths in a minute): It’s your birthday. You’re going shopping. You walk into the store on this unseasonably warm February day with a mission: find your forever guitar. The one you will never want to replace. Your old guitar has been ravaged and warped by the dry heat of the radiators each winter. You need an upgrade. You play it for a couple of hours to be sure, but that Rainsong sure seems like it’s the one. It sounds bright and articulate. It’s the most cyberpunkalicious guitar you’ve ever seen. And crucially, it’s made of carbon fiber. It is as invincible as an acoustic guitar can be. It will scoff at, nay, laugh in the face of the radiators that have tormented its wooden cousins for decades. This will be it. The guitar you take to your grave. The guitar you hope to play some shows with. The guitar you use to finally record those songs you’ve spent years writing. It's your birthday, though, so you go right from the store to the karaoke bar to meet up with everyone you know in the city. Your partner, X. Your sister, Y. New friends from trivia, made in the years since you moved to New York. Old friends from college and childhood who have lived here for ages. You belt out “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.” Y plays a joke on you and makes you sing “Let It Go,” which you discover has a key change. You’re amazed that the song selection includes “Chocolate Salty Balls,” and are equally amazed that your friend, Z, pulls it off. You remember what it feels like to have fun. The past five years, they’ve had some serious rough patches. But you got your PhD. You got your faculty job. You moved to the city you’ve wanted to live in since you were a teenager. You got back together with X, and even moved in together. Things are looking up. Maybe 2020 will be a pretty good year, if you squint hard enough. ----- In early 2020, as far as I can tell, The Beths were on a bit of a break. They had wrapped up a big world tour in 2019 supporting Future Me Hates Me, and aside from playing a festival and opening for The Pixies in Auckland, they stopped playing shows for a bit. This is probably when Jump Rope Gazers was coming together as an album, the four of them hammering out “Dying to Believe” and other winners in Johnathan Pearce’s recently upgraded studio. I don’t know what they thought 2020 was going to be like, but that sounds like a pretty good place to be to me. Future Me Hates Me was a triumph of a debut, and I’m sure the band had some inkling of that. The cocktail of fast-paced power pop and rapid-fire lyrics tinged with equal parts wit, anxiety and self-loathing was just too potent to miss. Outside of the context of when it was released, Jump Rope Gazers is a great follow-up. It has my favorite Beths song (the aforementioned “Dying to Believe”). Elsewhere, as on the title track, The Beths take their music in slightly new directions. Yes, out of context, I’m sure Jump Rope Gazers would have been a successful follow-up, with a successful world tour, continuing The Beths’ upward trajectory. Context can be a bitch sometimes. Write-up by u/mrdudesir (Onward into the New Normal): And it’s quite a cost, but nothing comes for free But when you know, you know You know it's meant to be Meant to be You woke up early today. It’s the day your son will be born. Unlike many parents, you’ve known this is the day your son will be born for a while. You and X have known the date of the caesarean section procedure for a couple of months now. Medically speaking, everything is fine. The c-section is necessary for X’s safety. It’s all routine, and planned c-sections have very low rates of complications. You are terrified. Now, outwardly, you cannot allow yourself to look terrified. That would not be fair to X, the person taking on risk. You have to keep her company while she goes through this. Smile through your mask. Read her expressions through her mask. You have to show her pictures of adorable animals on your phone, while you both try to not think about all of the details of what’s happening behind the curtain bisecting her abdomen. Mere moments (or was it hours?) pass until C is born. You both stop looking at baby animals on your phone. You’ve seen pictures of newborn babies before, but nothing really prepares you for it. They are alien and bloated. Beautiful and familiar. C cries for a moment, and they let you take a picture of him next to X. Then, cruelly, they take him away to a table across the room. X will not get to hold him yet, will not hold him for over a day. You go to the table where two doctors are attending to C. You get to hold his hand. You get to spend a moment with him. But his oxygen is low, a common problem in c-section births. They need to take him to the NICU. Logically you know that he will be safe. No amount of logic will save you from this anxiety. You are ushered back to the staging room. Some time later, a patched-up X is wheeled in. An hour later, you are sent to the maternity ward, childless. The NICU is mere meters away, but you cannot go until they give you the OK. You and X wait. You call to get a status. Oxygen levels still a little low, he still needs the ventilator. What seems like an eternity later, that evening, you are allowed to come visit C in the NICU. X is still unable to be moved, so you go up alone. You have the sappy book that your parents asked you to read to C. You read it to him. You feed him some formula. You hold him for the first time. This is the best day of your life so far. ----- If you watch some interviews with The Beths, they’re not shy about how hard it was to release Jump Rope Gazers during the pandemic. No supporting tour. No way to interact with fans. Just out into the ether of doom that was 2020. That had to suck. But The Beths got a very different 2020 than I did. I, living in a city of islands (and The Bronx, I know you’re on the mainland, love you), was at the epicenter of the worst pandemic in a century. The Beths, living in a country of islands, were as far away from that epicenter as can be, both geographically and circumstantially. And from that difference came something miraculous. The band went on tour in the middle of 2020. Not the international tour that they might have hoped for, but a triumphant one across the islands of Aotearoa, culminating in a hometown show in Auckland Town Hall. From this vantage point, watching the world crumble from a distance, I wonder if the horror was less palpable or if it just came in different flavors. If Liz Stoke’s lyrics on Expert in a Dying Field are to be taken as evidence, my guess is the latter. They are full of the anxiety (i.e. Silence is Golden), regret (i.e. Best Left) and existential dread (i.e. Head in the Clouds) that I was feeling. That I still feel. It is from this unique vantage, of being at the right place in the horrible times, that led Liz and the rest of The Beths to Expert. Their powerpop opus. A collection of songs that can dazzle you with musical deftness and overwhelm you with a firehose of troubled thoughts. +++++ The sound, the sound, the sound, the sound The sound, the sound, the sound, the sound I’d burn the city to the ground to turn it down The early days of this pandemic are quiet. Everybody stays inside, or wearily goes for walks in the park, keeping their distance. And so this city, whose sounds have bombarded you for years, has fallen into relative silence. You barely leave the apartment you share with X. C will not be born for over a year. You spend your days figuring out how you can teach your classes online, playing computer games, watching TV shows. Sometimes, when you forget why it exists, the silence is calming. The silence won’t last. Once everybody has had enough time to go sufficiently insane, the noises of the city come back with a perverse vengeance. People tune their car engines to be as loud as possible and race them around in the middle of the night. People throw parties outside in your neighborhood parks at all hours, seemingly ignorant of whether it’s Friday or Tuesday. Your apartment, on the top floor of a building on a hill, facing a major roadway, is the perfect listening post for this cacophony. Which is to say you are also going nuts. You find brief respites in the park, birdwatching. You play guitar. You are so thankful you bought that thing before all of this started. But it isn’t enough. What you need, what everybody needs, is a good pair of headphones. Noise-canceling headphones. When they arrive, it is a window into a new, noise-controlled world. You can think again. You wear them around the apartment. You wear them in bed and shut the world away. You start listening to anything that seems interesting. Audiobooks. Podcasts. But most importantly, you listen to music. Lots of music Which is how The Beths come into your life. ----- A COVID-free Aotearoa was never going to last. The country opened back up, and the waves of suck that COVID-19 generates rushed in. Aotearoa locked down in August 2021, in the middle of recording sessions for Expert in a Dying Field. In the intervening months, Liz said she had the opportunity to write a few more songs and refine the ones she already wrote. Maybe this is the secret sauce that makes Expert just that much better. That little extra time to stew. Taking a quick detour from The Beths, I feel like 2022 was full of releases from already great bands who found a new level. Alvvays released a shoegaze masterpiece. Soccer Mommy continued to perfect that hard-to-pin-down 90’s sound, making it her own. Black Midi found more ways to make the surreal and the strange sound amazing. There were so many more: I think this was the best year for music in a long time. It’s a silver lining from what has been a couple of awful years: it gave these artists just a little more time to sit with their work. On Expert this seems to have manifested in little details. As an example, I present to you the sonic easter egg on the title track. “Expert in a Dying Field,” you see, is partly an homage to The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Maybe I put my tin foil hat on for this one, but I don’t think so. Let’s take a closer look. First there is a lyrical nod in The Beths’ song: You can’t stop, can’t rewind Love is learned over time Till you’re an expert in a dying field When you compare it to lyrics from The Buggles’: In my mind and in my car We can't rewind, we've gone too far Pictures came and broke your heart It’s in the use of the word “rewind,” the reference of video/audio tape to evoke the sense that time only moves forward. It’s there in both songs. We have to live with the heartbreak, and hopefully learn from it. This is true whether that heartbreak comes from love, or our vocation. Second, the production. The Buggles’ song has a distinctive filtered vocal effect. You can hear it throughout the song. What did the Beths do? They used that same effect, but just during one post-chorus interlude. It’s a whisper, just for a moment, but it’s there. Finally, we have the choice of song title, “Expert in a Dying Field”. You see, The Buggles were pioneers of Music Television. Iconic ones: Their song is not-so-subtly calling out the end of radio, and it was one of the first songs broadcast on MTV when it launched. And now, more than 40 years later, The Beths make a very subtle nod to The Buggles. Because Music Television is a dying (dead?) field! How does it feel? The Beths have talked about their love for music videos in interviews, and they have some pretty cool ones themselves. The Aotearoa government even gives promising artists funds to go film them. There’s even a notorious music video one band made about squandering these funds. It’s hilarious. I don’t read the easter egg as the Beths dunking on The Buggles, who only have that one hit as their claim to fame. I think it’s an earnest call to something the band themselves love. This easter egg is not the point of the song. I didn’t really notice it until I’d listened to it about a (couple?) dozen times. That’s why the easter egg fucking rules. It’s already a great song. I’m listening again because I like it. The Beths left these little tidbits there for us to discover on relisten. How thoughtful of them. +++++ It's a pain in the heart Clean the blood from your shirt Yeah, your head's in the clouds But your soul's in the dirt +++++ Well past productivity Deep down in my misery This instinct will bury me Bury me, bury me, bury me 2022 rolls around, then progresses past the halfway point, and you have not had a break in a year. You love C and X to death, but having a family is tiring. You are always sick, now that C brings home every disease known to man from daycare. You are always stressed about being sick because of the disruptions it causes (C home from daycare, moving class online, feeling crummy). You don’t feel like you have time for anything. And yet you still have to find time to work, to travel and visit family, to be a good dad, to try to take care of yourself. Your job is not helping. In a short story you wrote, you likened teaching online during the early pandemic to dealing with Lovecraftian horrors. Those black boxes on Zoom, some with names, some with images, one, inexplicably, with a guffawing Jerry (of Tom and Jerry) staring back at you. Some of them never said anything to you for a whole semester, even though your class required participation. They just showed up and did nothing. What unfathomable things were happening on the other sides of those boxes? How much worse was it being a student just trying to figure out your life during that chaos? Going back to in-person classes offered a brief boost in morale. But the damage was done. Now, nobody seems to have enough time to get things done, everybody is stressed and distracted, everyone feels guilty and angry and frustrated. You try your best to compartmentalize. It all comes to a head at the end of the summer. You’ve had to teach an online class while traveling to see family with C and X. Then X goes away to an international conference for a week, and C gets hand, foot and mouth disease (you do, too). You still have to run your online class. C is miserable, and it breaks your heart to see him like this. You cry whenever you get a moment alone. When X gets home, she suggests you take time to yourself. What do you want to do with a whole weekend alone? What is free time, anyway? Then it comes to you. You know exactly what to do. You rent a house in the middle of nowhere. You load your gear into your car. You are going to record some fucking music. The day you arrive you get situated. You figure out where you want to set up your recording equipment. The window with a view of the wilderness seems like a good spot. It’s been a helluva year or three, so the beer and edibles you brought with you seem like such a good choice. These are not a good choice. The edible is incredibly potent, and the beer is making your voice hoarse. You spend the evening watching episodes of I May Destroy You on your laptop. You wonder if the production is really that trippy, or if you are just really high. (Spoiler: It’s both things). The next day you try to dispense with the mind altering substances, but the damage is done. You cannot sing. Your hands are hurting. You cannot get a good take of the song you’ve played hundreds of times. In your frustration, you have another edible and watch the rest of I May Destroy You. At least that show was amazing. When you get home, after another day of failure, X asks if she can listen to what you recorded. In truth, you got one guitar take of one of your songs that you were about half-happy with. You are too embarrassed to even have her listen to that. Not because she would hear it, but because you would have to remember. ----- Recording music is fucking hard. In addition to this, writing good songs is really fucking hard. It is a miracle that we have such a wealth of great recordings to listen to. Johnathan Pearce clearly spends a lot of his time recording music and/or thinking about recording music. The Beths all studied jazz at university. Liz Stokes is a phenomenal songwriter. All of the elements for the miracle of good music are there. I think this miracle is most evident on “Silence Is Golden.” Liz and Johnathan talk about how this song, though different from most of their catalog, immediately stood out as one the band wanted to record. Finishing it, they say, was an emotional moment. As somebody who has tried, and failed, to record music for a long time, I know why. They nailed it. The opening riff is frenetic. Liz’s rapid fire lyrics about how the sounds of the world can be overwhelming are on point. Ben Sinclair’s bassline gets bent, out of control, and fuzzed out. The big chords on the second chorus drop on you hard. And then there’s that solo. I know that there were probably a lot of takes, a lot of attempts at getting it just right. But in my mind, I like to think that Johnathan was told he had one take, one shot, to play a solo that would drive some alien invaders away and make them rue the day they messed with humanity. One shot to save the world with his guitar. And that’s just what he did. If I pulled off a solo like that, I’d be emotional too. Expert in a Dying Field is full of moments where The Beths nail it. The hard questions and existential crossroads of “Head in the Clouds.” The jazzy openness of “2am,” where Tristan McKenzie’s drum work has a chance to breathe and get expressive. The push-pull of loneliness and hopefulness that is “Your Side,” which has a fantastic solo of a different variety, this time expressing the desolate expanse of longing for someone. +++++ Don't cry I'm driving all night To be by your side You drive a lot. You live in a city with an expansive subway system, but your job is actually in a different city. A different state. Your commute takes you along one of the most infamous sections of highway in North America, the New Jersey Turnpike circa Newark, NJ. You often hate this commute. How can you not? It’s horrible, and sometimes traffic is soul crushing. But after having a break from it for most of a year (online learning!), you have a newfound appreciation for it. Swampland interwoven with industrial hellscapes, replete with towers of flame. There can be a malignant beaty to it. You often wonder if, among the millions of people you drive by on this commute, are the bands you love, going on tour. Maybe The Beths. Probably The Beths, at some point. You missed their free show in Prospect Park because you were having the summer from hell. You saw, too late, that they were playing in Asbury Park, NJ the day after you made plans with Z to see Spoon and Interpol play there. As you marvel at the beautiful sunset that appeared behind Spoon during their set, you wonder if The Beths see it too, somewhere on the Turnpike or the Parkway, or whatever byway they are traveling on. You missed seeing them in person, but The Beths are there with you on your drive. A lot. This commute gives you a lot of time to listen. Sometimes you are overwhelmed with joy. By this music that others create. There is sadness in there, as you never seem to be able to create it yourself. But mostly joy. Somebody did it. Britt Daniel comes up with the most succinct summation of rock and roll. Somebody did it. The Antlers express the process of grief with the honesty you wish you possessed. Somebody did it. Caroline Rose blends the boisterous with indignities in ways that make you smile. Somebody did it. The Beths created an album of powerpop gems and poignant thoughts. Somebody fucking did it. As long as people keep doing it, you will keep going. Keep listening. Maybe one day it will be you. Talking Points:

Open caption versions of a film count separately, as do dubbed vs. subbed versions of a given film, sensory friendly screenings, etc. Movies in premium formats carry a surcharge with Unlimited. Only movies that you see with an Unlimited ticket count toward this challenge. Movies you pay for out of pocket without using a free Unlimited base ticket do not count, and neither do Unlimited excluded films like Fathom Events and concert experiences. Here are the different formats that count as unique movies toward this challenge: standard (2D), 3D, 4DX 2D, 4DX 3D, Director's Suite, D-BOX, ICE Immersive, IMAX 2D, IMAX 3D, Open Caption, PLF, PLF 3D, RPX 2D, RPX 3D, ScreenX, Sensory, VIP 2D, VIP 3D. For comparison, earning points by spending usually occurs at a rate of 100 points per $1.00 spent. Therefore, the 25,000 bonus credits for completing this program would normally require you to spend $250!
