2023.02.03 04:42 alphajoehill The origins of MAGA nastiness and its use of falsehoods

During a press conference on 1-5-23 incoming House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) made the statement that does not appear to have been widely reported, but is quoted below:
“Tip O’Neill got along with Ronald Reagan. Ted Kennedy got along with Orrin Hatch. Joe Biden got along with John McCain. Nancy Pelosi got along with John Boehner. Ruth Bader Ginsberg got along with Antonin Scalia. All we are asking is House Republicans to get along. With each other.”
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/house/katherine-clark-mccarthy-hostage-own-ambition
Indeed, House Republicans had in fact been doing much more than just failing to “get along” with other House Republicans. MAGA House Republicans had been continuously attacking other House Republicans who had disputed their falsehoods about the 2020 presidential election or criticized Trump. Clearly MAGA House Republicans had become unable to limit their attacks to those they had been continuously making against Democrats and almost always relied on their use of falsehoods.
As a result, above quoted statement of Jeffries caused me to attempt to find two things. One was what had caused Jeffries to state Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Antonin Scalia “got along” with each other even though radical differences of opinion about critically important subjects had always existed between them when MAGA House Republicans could not “get along” even with other House Republicans when they had a difference of opinion.
It turns out that Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Antonin Scalia did not just get “along” as stated by Jeffries. Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s best friend on the Supreme Court had always been Antonin Scalia.
https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/18/politics/ruth-bader-ginsburg-dead/index.html
According to the 9-19-20 Washington Post article entitled “What we can learn from Ginsburg’s friendship with my father, Antonin Scalia” and authored by Eugene Scalia, the son of Antonin Scalia and the United States secretary of labor during the final 16 months of the Trump administration, their close friendship goes back to the 1980’s when both of them were judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington D. C. and that included a tradition of having New Year’s dinner together since then. In that article Eugene Scalia states what is quoted below:
“What we can learn from the justices, though — beyond how to be a friend — is how to welcome debate and differences. The two justices had central roles in addressing some of the most divisive issues of the day, including cases on abortion, same-sex marriage and who would be president. Not for a moment did one think the other should be condemned or ostracized.” (Bold type added)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/eugene-scalia-rbg-friendship-oped/2020/09/19/35f7580c-faaa-11ea-a275-1a2c2d36e1f1_story.html
The second thing that the above quoted statement of Jeffries caused me to look for is how it came to be that Trump and the MAGA crowd would continuously rely so heavily on acting without any civility and on using falsehoods even though Ginzburg and Scalia continuously remained close friends without ever thinking for even a moment that one of them “should be condemned or ostracized”, let alone through the use of falsehoods like those continuously used by Trump and the MAGA crowd.
After all, even members of sport teams who may have far less education and social skills will exercise at least some care about what they say about members of their arch rivals. Indeed, many of those on a losing team will hug or shake hands with those on the winning team at the end of even a bitter game between arch rivals.
Yet Trump and the MAGA crowd chose to continuously follow a course that is the exact opposite of the course that Ginzburg and Scalia chose to follow for decades. Everyone is worse off because Trump and the MAGA crowd have kept refusing to learn anything from Ginzburg or Scalia about the proper way to deal with someone who opposes something that Trump or the MAGA crowd has said or done.
Trump and his MAGA crowd appear to have chosen to follow that unique course even before the time when Trump chose to use his falsehoods about the birth of Barack Obama to attack Obama and promote his popularity.
They had certainly made that choice by the time Trump had doubled down on “birtherism” and claimed on 4-7-11 during an interview on NBC’s “Today” show that he had investigators in Hawaii searching for information about the birth of Barack Obama and “they cannot believe what they’re finding.” Even though Trump and his MAGA crowd were repeatedly questioned about those claims and they repeatedly promised that information about sending investigators to Hawaii and what those investigators had found would be provided, no evidence has ever been provided that Trump had sent any investigators to Hawaii, let alone any evidence that one of them had found something that at least tended to support their falsehoods that Obama had not been born in the U. S.
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/donald-trump-hawaii-investigators_n_57dc3bffe4b04a1497b46da1
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/donald-trump-birtherism_n_57dc0ef6e4b0071a6e06d9cb
As more years passed, Trump and his MAGA crowd further demonstrated that their repeated promises to provide those kinds of information had always been just more of the falsehoods that they would continuously use. Those falsehoods would eventually include their falsehoods about the 2020 presidential election and the confidential documents found at Mar-a-Lago.
It turns out that a considerable number of journalists and historians have for years been providing meritorious reasons to attribute to Newt Gingrich the origin of the unique course that Trump and the MAGA crowd chose to continuously follow. Among the sources that identify some of those journalists and historians and their reasons are the following:
A. The 1-7-23 New York Times article that is entitled "From Gingrich to McCarthy, the Roots of Governance by Chaos" and authored by Robert Draper. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/07/us/politics/speaker-mccarthy-gingrich-trump.html?
That article authored by Draper states that "Instead, Mr. Gingrich’s triumph in 1994 in wresting the House from a Democratic majority for the first time since 1952 was the starting point for the zero-sum brand of politics that mutated into the Tea Party movement, the grievance-based populism of the Trump era, and what was garishly displayed on the House floor in a raucous four-day speaker battle that ended in the small hours of Saturday.”
B. The 8-5-22 Washington Post book review of Dana Milbank’s The Destructionists: The Twenty-Five Year Crack-Up of the Republican Party that is entitled “Tracing the Republican Party’s devolution to one man: Newt Gingrich” and authored by Christopher Buckley.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2022/08/05/tracing-republican-partys-devolution-one-man-newt-gingrich/
As other journalists and historians have done, Buckley’s book review identifies Gingrich as the one who did the following:
  1. Began teaching Republicans that they had to become “nasty” and told an audience that “One of the great problems we have in the Republican Party is that we don’t encourage you to be nasty.”
  2. “[P]oisoned the well” by issuing a manual with 65 insults and abusive phrases for Republicans to deploy against Democrats and taught Republicans that they needed to include in those phrases words like “traitors,” “sick,” “corrupt,” “betray,” “bizarre,” “pathetic,” “abuse of power,” “anti-flag,” “anti-family,” and “anti-child”.
  3. “[P]ushed the ur-right-wing nutjob conspiracy that Clinton aide Vince Foster was murdered”, which “metastasized a quarter-century later into” the MAGA crowd’s conspiracy theories.
C. The 7-17-20 Washington Post book review of Julian E. Zelizer’s Burning Down the House: Newt Gingrich and the Rise of the New Republican Party that is entitled “How Newt Gingrich made nastiness a virtue” and authored by Jeff Shesol.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/how-newt-gingrich-made-nastiness-a-virtue/2020/07/16/1cba30c8-8a28-11ea-9dfd-990f9dcc71fc_story.html
Shesol’s book review states that Gingrich demonstrated the “nastiness” that Republicans needed by using public hearings and the media “to drag reputations through the mud”. It also states that Republicans did in fact learn to “speak like Newt” as his manual taught them to do, and “Four decades later, the nastiness of the GOP — and therefore of much of our national life — can be seen as Gingrich’s most lasting achievement: nastiness as a virtue, a governing principle, an end in itself.”
Shesol’s book review identifies as one example of this that Gingrich’s allies and aides spread false rumors that Tom Foley, a Democrat and the 49th Speaker of the House, was gay. (That is remarkably similar to what the MAGA crowd has recently done to Paul Pelosi.)
D. The 11-1-18 NPR article that is entitled “'Combative, Tribal, Angry': Newt Gingrich Set The Stage For Trump, Journalist Says” and highlights Terry Gross’ interview of journalist McKay Coppins who authored the Atlantic article, "The Man Who Broke Politics".
https://www.npr.org/transcripts/662906525
That NPR article reports that Coppins had said during his interview that "I think that [Gingrich’s] defining legacy is he enshrined this combative, tribal, angry attitude in politics that would infect our national discourse in Washington and Congress for decades to come."
E. The 10-17-18 Atlantic article entitled "The Man Who Broke Politics" and authored by McKay Coppins.
https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/11/newt-gingrich-says-youre-welcome/570832/
Coppins states in that article that “But few figures in modern history have done more than Gingrich to lay the groundwork for Trump’s rise. During his two decades in Congress, he pioneered a style of partisan combat—replete with name-calling, conspiracy theories, and strategic obstructionism—that poisoned America’s political culture and plunged Washington into permanent dysfunction. Gingrich’s career can perhaps be best understood as a grand exercise in devolution—an effort to strip American politics of the civilizing traits it had developed over time and return it to its most primal essence.”
F. The 11-15-16 Mother Jones article entitled “A Very Long List of Dumb and Awful Things Newt Gingrich Has Said and Done” and authored by David Corn and Tim Murphy.
https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/11/very-long-list-dumb-and-awful-things-newt-gingrich-has-said-and-done/
The title of that Mother Jones article speaks for itself. In that “Very Long List of Dumb and Awful Things” is that in 2004 Gingrich told Fox News that liberal financier George Soros’ opposition to George W. Bush “might be due to his ties to drug cartels”.
G. The 7-5-16 Atlanta Journal-Constitution article entitled “Gingrich’s language set new course” and authored by James Salzer.
https://www.ajc.com/news/local-govt--politics/gingrich-language-set-new-course/O5bgK6lY2wQ3KwEZsYTBlO/
That article authored by Salzer describes how both the revolutionary 1990 manual that Gingrich used to teach Republicans how to “speak like Newt” and “Newtspeak” came about.
H. The 3-17-16 Atlanta Journal-Constitution article entitled “If GOP wants someone to blame, start with Newt Gingrich” and authored by Jay Bookman.
https://www.ajc.com/blog/jay-bookman/gop-wants-someone-blame-start-with-newt-gingrich/V2nE49vBoHtSWgOVu5ihPL/
That article authored by Bookman describes the reasons why the two that are quoted below are among the “changes in the GOP that have been led or inspired by Gingrich over the last quarter-century”:
  1. “Start with the style and tenor of modern Republican politics. Ceaseless confrontation, bullying, appeals to anger, resentment and persecution, a capacity for shamelessness that allows you to say or do anything to win -- these have long been the hallmarks of Gingrichian politics. As we've seen in this presidential cycle, the Gingrich style has become the house style of the Republican Party as well.”
  2. “The GOP world view, in which their political opponents are not merely wrong or mistaken but agents of pure evil out to betray all that is good and decent in America, is also a distinct Gingrichian legacy.”
I. The 9-20-90 New York Times article entitled “The Politics of Slash and Burn”.
https://www.nytimes.com/1990/09/20/opinion/the-politics-of-slash-and-burn.html
That 1990 article presciently described why the 1990 manual that Gingrich was using to teach Republicans how to be nasty “represents the worst of American political discourse” and could lead to a “descent into even lower levels of discourse.”

For the nastiness and falsehoods that Gingrich taught Republicans to use to keep being used years later by Trump and the MAGA crowd, it had to have been successful on enough occasions.
It had also been successfully used by Joe McCarthy from 1950 to 1954, but thereafter Joe McCarthy’s use of it began to fail for reasons that are not certain. Gingrich’s use of it similarly began to fail in 1998, and a Republican caucus ready to rebel against him prompted his resignation of the speakership and he announced his full departure from the House a few weeks later.
As with Gingrich, Trump, and the MAGA crowd, the continued silence of fellow Republicans is one of the reasons why Joe McCarthy could successfully continue to use it even if a small number of Republicans like Margaret Chase Smith did condemn his use of it.
The continued use of it by Trump and the MAGA crowd appears to have been aided by three things. One is exemplified by the increased use by members of the public of nastiness in social media and in the comments posted after news articles. It is difficult to tell whether such use of nastiness is either a chicken or an egg with respect to the continued use of it by Trump and the MAGA crowd.
Another has been the success that Trump and the MAGA crowd have had convincing so many of their followers that everyone outside of their bubble is lying whenever they challenge something that Trump and the MAGA crowd have said or written. Why Trump and the MAGA crowd continue to have that success does not have a rational explanation.
Still another is that they have carefully studied far more than Gingrich the kinds of phrases and words to use when they act nasty and use falsehoods. As a result, they know how to use a unique doublespeak that is similar to the kind used in George Orwell’s 1984.
Their use of nastiness and falsehoods appears to have the most success when the subject of their nastiness and falsehoods is one that their followers cannot see or cannot understand. Their nastiness and falsehoods about CRT are both of those things.
It has always been easier for demagogues to arouse the fear and anger of their followers about subjects that they cannot see or cannot understand. Witchcraft and the casting of spells had been such subjects for centuries. Joe McCarthy’s “fellow travelers” have also been among such subjects.
The MAGA crowd continues to use the equivalent of Joe McCarthy’s “fellow travelers” to arouse fear and anger among its followers. The fear and anger that it arouses among those followers appears to correspond with the number of MAGA followers of who have not had success at higher levels of education.

2023.02.03 02:31 AreARedCarrot ChatGPT's take on Kryptos K4

I just had to ask ChatGPT about Kryptos and the solution to K4...
The solution to the fourth part of the Kryptos sculpture, referred to as "K4," has not been definitively determined. The sculpture, located at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) headquarters in Langley, Virginia, was created by artist James Sanborn in 1990 and contains a series of coded messages. The first three parts of the sculpture have been solved, but the fourth and final part remains unsolved. Despite numerous attempts by codebreakers and cryptographers, the solution to K4 has not been officially confirmed. Some individuals have proposed solutions, but none have been verified by the artist or the CIA.
The text you provided is the encrypted message of the fourth part of the Kryptos sculpture, commonly referred to as "K4." The solution to this message has not been definitively determined as of 2021, despite numerous attempts by codebreakers and cryptographers. The artist, James Sanborn, has not officially released the solution, and the CIA, which owns the sculpture, has not confirmed any proposed solutions. Some individuals have proposed solutions, but none have been verified by the artist or the CIA.
So far so good, but then...
In 2010, a CIA veteran named David Stein proposed that the last 97 characters of K4 spell out the message “BERLINCLOCK”. But this theory was later debunked by the artist himself. In 2016, Sanborn revealed that the first letter of the plaintext of K4 is the letter 'N' and the last letter of the plaintext is 'X'. It is worth noting that the Kryptos sculpture remains one of the most famous unsolved cryptographic puzzles, and despite the many attempts, it remains unsolved and the artist has not released the solution to this day.
In 2016, James Sanborn, the artist who created the Kryptos sculpture, revealed that the first letter of the plaintext of the fourth part of the sculpture (K4) is the letter 'N' and the last letter of the plaintext is 'X' during a public lecture in Washington D.C. He gave this information as a hint for those who were trying to decrypt the message, but he did not provide any other information to help solve the cipher. It is not uncommon for the artist or the creator of such puzzles to give hints or clues to help people trying to solve it, but these hints doesn't always lead to the solution.
According to my knowledge cutoff in 2021, the artist James Sanborn has given several hints and clues to help people trying to solve the fourth part of the Kryptos sculpture (K4), however, none of these hints have led to the definite solution of the cipher. Here are some of the hints that have been given: -In 2010, Sanborn revealed that the 64th, 65th, 66th, and 67th characters of the encrypted message spell out the letters "NYPV" which is an acronym for "New York Palimpsest V" -In 2011, he revealed that the plaintext of the first letter is "N" and the last letter of the plaintext is "X" -In 2014, Sanborn said that the plaintext of K4 is a proper noun and its length is less than 80 characters. -In 2016, James Sanborn said that the plaintext of K4 is not a word in any language and it is not a name of a person or place. These are the hints that have been given by the artist, but it is worth noting that some of the hints are not entirely clear and it is still a mystery as to how they could be used to decrypt the message.
The confidence with which it is making up new facts is hilarious. Did you have better or similar experiences regarding ciphers/codes?

2023.02.03 01:55 swillansky Looking for a (homebrew) module with a mystery, maybe even some Twin Peaks-style supernatural elements

Big fan of David Lynch's Twin Peaks.
Looking for a module that can convey a similar feeling. Most likely will have to be homebrew. Some are easier to accomplish than others. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it's a show with pretty much three layers:
  1. Murder mystery with other criminal elements uncovered
    1. This feels like the simplest to solve, there are plenty of mystery "whodunnit" modules
  2. Exploration of supernatural beings and otherwordly forces
    1. There are already otherworldly forces in DnD, but this is a different take on it. Looking to expand beyond just the basics and get a little weird with it
    2. There's a lot of mystery of "what is this being, what is this place"?
  3. Full on abstract, experimental messaging
    1. This is hard to accomplish in a module. I think at most, what I can ask for is that there are certain unexplainable elements, and rather just things that the players are expected to grok rather than fully explain.
Anyone know of anything like this?

Hey Rangers.
The loss of Jason David Frank has been an incredible blow for a lot of people, us included. For me, he was a personal hero and inspiration for my life, and had been ever since I was a kid. That's why, with his absence in the world, I wanted to do something to celebrate him in the spaces I feel most comfortable.
That's why my friends and I have geared up RANGER FORCE in the revival game City of Heroes: Homecoming's EVERLASTING Server!
Since starting back in December of 2022 we've come across an innumerable number of former Sentai teams in game as well as fans of the rangers out of game that've been looking for a space to play out these types of characters, and because of that we've been double inspired to keep this train running.

What Ranger Force Is...

Ranger Force is a thriving, growing Roleplay Community (Within City of Heroes: Homecoming, Everlasting) made for the purpose of grabbing the original feeling, and vibe present within the various Power Ranger shows, while also giving a space for similiar hero and villain types (TMNT Inspired Characters, Kamen Riders, Magical Girls, Beetleborgs, Henshin in general).

What to expect...

  • A Regularly Active member base, and an at several teams that feature intentionally wholesome nostalgia, in light hearted story with very traditionally written heroes and villains as well as new and inventive, fun, and explorative takes on the Rangers and other relative Henshin Heroes!
  • Streams of series(s) like the Power Rangers, and Kamen Rider in the server!

2023.02.03 01:33 Wazowskiwithonei Just sharing for those interested: I've rendered the entirety of Luke 1 and 2 in the style of Dr. Seuss

I call it Dr. Hey-Seuss, because that's pretty funny to me. Hope you enjoy!

Luke 1
1 There are many who’ve tried hard to capture the gist Of the things that we’ve seen and have heard in our midst,
2 Just as those who observed them all right from the start Have made efforts to tell us all they could impart.
3 So it seemed good to me, who has heard every tale, To write all of them down so God’s love might prevail,
4 And that you, hearing all this, may know without doubt, That the stories you’ve heard all did truly play out.
5 In the days when King Herod ruled Judea, at least, Was a man whom they called Zechariah the priest.
From the daughters of Aaron he’d taken his wife And it was with Elizabeth he shared his life.
6 They were both deeply righteous and gave God their best And they followed with joy His commands and requests.
7 But the pair had no child, though they longed and they prayed, and the older they got, the more they grew dismayed.
8 Now one year Zechariah was given a turn 9 to go into God’s temple with incense to burn
10 And a large crowd outside stood and started to pray – 11 When he saw by the altar an angel that day!
12 Zechariah grew nervous as this visit was paid 13 But the angel said, “Friend, you need not be afraid.
“You have prayed many prayers and God knows you believe, So your wife He will soon give the chance to conceive!
14 “And the child she bears, you will call his name John, And the joy that he brings all will go on and on.
15 “He’ll be great before God and avoid drinking wine, And the Lord will fill him with His Spirit divine.
16 “He will turn many hearts back to worship our God 17 And will walk in the way where Elijah once trod,
“Turning hearts back to wisdom, compassion, and care – and the way of the Lord he’ll go on to prepare.”
18 So the priest asked the angel, “Just how can I know? I’m elderly, and my wife just as much so!”
19 “I’m Gabriel,” said the angel, “and I stand with the Word, so from heaven He sent me to speak what you’ve heard.
20 “But because of your doubting, you’ll silently mime ‘til the promise God made comes to pass in due time.”
21 All the people outside, they would wonder and pray, asking what could have caused Zechariah’s delay.
22 And he finally came out, quite unable to speak, signing to them that what he had seen was unique!
23 So his service was over, he started to roam, and he wandered on back to the place he called home.
24 After this, lo! A child in Elizabeth’s womb! And for five months she hid herself up in her room,
25 And she said, “God has made me so wondrously blessed, And has taken away the shame I once possessed.”
26 In the sixth month God sent Gabriel down to see someone in Nazareth, which was in Galilee
27 To a virgin named Mary, who was pledged to be spouse To a man named Joseph, from King David’s own house.
28 And the angel said, “Greetings, O you whom God favors! Surely He’s with you in all of your labors!”
29 But Mary was troubled, as best she could glean, and she wondered within what this greeting might mean.
30 The angel said, “Mary, you need not have fear, your favor with God is what brought me right here.
31 “For behold, in your womb, you will soon bear a son, and you’ll call His Name Jesus,” the angel begun.
32 “He’ll be great above all – Son of God the Most High and he’ll rule from the throne of King David thereby,
33 “He will rule over Jacob, forever amen, and His kingdom will be one which lasts without end.”
34 So Mary asked Gabriel, “How will this be? How could this take place with a virgin like me?”
35 The angel replied, “What the Spirit will do – He will pour out His power divine upon you;
“So the child you bear is the holiest One, and He’ll always be known as God’s only true Son.
36 “And your cousin, Elizabeth, whose husband’s of Aaron; she’s now six months pregnant who used to be barren!
37 “There’s nothing that’s hopeless in heaven or earth if our God is determined to give it new birth.”
38 Mary said, “I’m God’s servant; as you’ve said, let it be.” And the angel departed from where she could see.
39 In those days Mary rose and she went quickly down to the hills found in Judah to one special town
40 So she found Zechariah’s home, entered on in, And she greeted Elizabeth, one of her kin.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting ring out how the baby within her womb leaped all about!
And Elizabeth, filled with God’s Spirit Most High, 42 she exclaimed with resounding and joyous outcry:
“Blessed are you among women in the role you assume! And blessed is the One who’s the fruit of your womb!
43 “Tell me what kind of wonderful thing might this be that my Lord’s blessed mother should come here to me?
44 “For the sound of the greeting your lips did employ, caused the baby within me to leap with all joy!
45 “And blessed are you who believed what you heard For the Lord will fulfill to you His spoken word.”
46 Mary said, “How my soul’s overwhelmed with God’s praise! 47 How my spirit rejoices in God as He saves!
48 “For He looks on His servant of humble estate, And all those yet to come will know He consecrates;
49 “For the One who is mighty does wonders for me, And it’s His Name alone which is known as holy.
50 “He has mercy for those who will reverence His Name In all ages and eons and people the same.
51 “He has made known the strength of His arm from the start; He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
52 “He has brought down the mighty who thought they were great and exalted the lowly of humble estate.
53 “He has filled up the hungry with good things He granted And sent off the rich to go forth empty-handed.
54 “He has helped humble Israel his mercy remember, 55 as He spoke to our fathers and their offspring forever.”
56 Mary stayed with her cousin about three months more, then returned to her home to await what’s in store.
57 With the time of Elizabeth’s pregnancy done, she began to give birth, and she brought forth a son!
58 And her neighbors and all saw the work of the Lord and together rejoiced with her in one accord.
59 On the eighth day they circumcised this tiny lad and those there tried to name the boy after his dad.
60 But his mother said, “John’s what we’ll name our dear son.” 61 They replied, “Zero relatives have that name – none!”
62 They looked o’er at his father and tried to inquire as to what kind of name he himself might desire.
63 So he asked them for something that he could write on and to all their amazement, wrote, “The boy’s name is John.”
64 And his mouth was immediately opened and broad so he spoke up and poured out his blessings to God.
65 Fear gripped all those who heard this as news spread around throughout all the hill country in Judea’s towns.
66 All who heard these things asked, “What will this child be?” for God’s hand was on John, and this much all could see.
67 Zechariah his father, with the Spirit his guide, spoke these words God revealed and to all prophesied:
68 “May the Lord God of Israel forever be blessed! He has visited us and redeemed our oppressed,
69 “He has raised up for us a great horn of salvation from the house of King David, who ruled o’er this nation.
70 “As he spoke by the mouths of his prophets of old, 71 to save us from all those who toward us are cold.
72 “to show mercy He promised, fulfill what He swore, 73 to bring forth what He told Abraham that He bore:
74 “That we, being rescued, might serve God with fear 75 and be holy and righteous all the days we are here.
76 “So my son, you’ll be prophet to God the Most High and you’ll tell all the world – the Savior is nigh.
77 “To give knowledge to all of salvation from sin, 78 for our God’s tender mercies, from on high they begin.
79 “To give light to all those who in darkness do dwell and to guide all our feet where it’s peaceful and well.”
80 And the child grew up and his spirit grew strong, and he stayed in the desert till the time came along.
Luke 2
1 In the days of Augustus, the ruler of Rome, a decree was sent out that all go to their home.
2 They would register there for the first time, as planned, while a man named Quirinius led Syria’s land.
3 So the people obeyed and they all traveled down to the places they hailed from – each to their own town.
4 To Judea from Galilee, forth Joseph did ring for he came from the family of David, the king.
5 He went back there with Mary, his soon-to-be wife, and she held in her womb a most beautiful life.
6 And while there came the time for the birth of the One 7 And her labor complete, she gave birth to her son.
Mary swaddled him up; in a manger he lay, For the inn where they were had no place they could stay.
8 In the region around, there were shepherds nearby keeping watch over flocks as the stars lit the sky.
9 And an angel of God to them all did appear and the glory of God shining filled them with fear!
10 Yet the angel said, “Lo! You need not be afraid! I bring good news of great joy for all whom God made!
11 “For to you, in the city of David this day, has a Savior been born – He is Christ! He’s the Way!
12 “And you’ll find as a sign which the Lord is supplying, a babe wrapped in cloths, in a small manger lying.”
13 With the angel appeared then the heavenly host, singing praises to God and uplifting Him most,
14 Saying, “Glory to God in the heavens’ highest, and may peace be on earth where His great favor rests.”
15 The angels departed to heaven from them, so the shepherds said, “Let’s go on to Bethlehem!
“Let’s see what has happened! Let’s all go thus and check out what the Lord has made known unto us!”
16 And they went on with haste, all running like wild, and found Mary and Joseph and the newborn Christ child.
17 When they saw all these things they had been told were true they made known all they’d heard from the angelic crew.
18 All who heard it, they wondered and stood there in awe at the things that the shepherds would tell them they saw.
19 But as she heard these stories told right from the start, Mary treasured them up and pondered in her heart.
20 So the shepherds returned, giving God all their praise for the things they had seen and had heard on their ways.
21 Now when eight days had passed and he was circumcised, they called him Jesus as the angel advised.
22 It came time to be made pure as Moses implored, so they brought their boy with them to give to the Lord
23 (For it’s written in God’s Law and so shall it be: “Every male who is firstborn is holy to Me.”)
24 and they sacrificed just as the Lord’s Law laid bare: “offer two young pigeons or a turtledove pair.”
25 In Jerusalem lived one called Simeon, who was a most righteous man and a wise, devout Jew.
He awaited with hope Israel’s comfort and rest and God’s Spirit was present with him for the best.
26 And the Spirit had shown him he would not yet die ‘til he’d seen the Lord’s Christ with his very own eye.
27 So the Spirit brought him to the Temple one day and in walked Jesus’ family, for God’s Law to obey.
28 In his arms Simeon took the child with care and he blessed the Lord God and began to declare,
29 “Lord, in peace You are letting Your servant depart, as You said in the word You revealed to my heart:
30 “For my eyes have been blessed and have seen Your salvation 31 which You’ve made in the presence of all of the nations.
32 “A light which reveals You to all those around and so glory to Your people Israel be found.”
33 And his father and mother both marveled, amazed, at the ways that the child was given such praise.
34 So Simeon blessed them, and before Mary’s eyes, said “This child will cause some to fall, some to rise.
“He’s a sign to the nation whom some will oppose, 35 and a sword will pierce through your own soul when He grows.
“And the thoughts from our hearts, which have long been concealed, He has come here, in part, so they’ll all be revealed.”
36 And a prophetess dwelt there – Anna, they called her, from the old tribe of Asher – Phanuel’s daughter.
She was well on in years, once in marriage steadfast, 37 but was eighty-four then, with her husband long passed.
So she stayed in the temple to worship and pray and she stayed there to fast – every night, every day.
38 She told all of the child without any exemption, to all those who awaited the nation’s redemption.
39 And when all had been done, as the Law had made clear, they went back down to Nazareth, the home they held dear.
40 And the child grew strong and grew wise in the Lord And God’s favor upon him was always outpoured.
41 Now his parents went yearly to the Passover feast. 42 He was now 12, and their custom never once ceased.
43 But when all this was over, Jesus chose not to go, and his parents left without their child in tow.
44 Having gone a day’s trip with their family’s group they began to search for him among their whole troupe,
45 but when no one could find him, they went back at brisk pace and they searched for their boy and combed over the place.
46 After three days they found him right there in God’s house listening to the teachers and asking about.
47 All who heard him were awed when he spoke, for he knew quite a lot for such a young bloke.
48 And when his parents saw him, their amazement did grow. “We’ve been looking for you! Why’ve you treated us so?”
49 Jesus simply replied, “Why’d you look far and wide? “Did you not know I’d be where my Father resides?”
50 But they couldn’t quite grasp when he spoke as he did. 51 So he went down with them and obeyed what they bid.
And his mother, she treasured with all of her heart all the things that she saw as her boy’s life did start.
52 Jesus increased in stature, his wisdom grew broad and he grew in his favor with man and with God.

2023.02.03 01:32 thegreatwill39 Help me fight against the double standards of body positivity that Alex Dacy has created against men, disabled and non disabled alike! Make it equal for all genders!

Hello there everyone, my name is William but you can call me Will if you’d like. I am a young guy who just so happens to have been born with the same condition as Alex: SMA Type 2. :)
I am sort of what you would call an amateur body positive male model. I am very confident about my body, despite my atrophied flaws, and I’m fairly active within the SMA community. While I don’t have as many followers as Alex, I always tried to turn the confidence that I have into something positive by posting on IG and helping other men feel good (and just people in general) about their bodies, and defy Hollywood’s unrealistic standards of beauty (because not everyone can be Adam Levine LOL!).
The cold hard truth is this: us disabled guys don’t have anyone to look up to in the scene like disabled women have a plethora of role models online who make them feel represented, and I wanna help change that for the better so that everyone can feel like they fit in. We want to be seen, but do not receive any support from those like Alex who have much influence in this female dominated industry.
The reason I have come to this sub is because I need to brush up my knowledge on Alex so I can make a few valid points on this podcast that I’m going to be in tonight in which the topic for this episode will talk about — you guessed it — body positivity. So, my biggest question that I have for you is: what are some of the ways you’ve seen Alex as a female disability influencer not carry that activism over to men? How have you seen her demonstrate this? I want to show examples of how disability activism doesn’t extend to men.
I recall how before she met Noah she used to be a total man hater because she couldn’t find a guy who’d date her, and how one time she stated in a post she deserved to have a man who looked like David Beckham and nothing less, but that men should settle for less and just accept her the way she is. This is very contradictory and just goes to show how shallow, self centered, and hypocritical she can be. She’s also known to shame men for expressing themselves which is very damaging to one’s self esteem and creates this barrier that doesn’t allow men to even get out of their comfort zone without fear of being judged.
Again, I’m only displaying in this post what I’m aware of so far. If there’s any details that I missed that perhaps you’d like to add onto for me I would highly appreciate it. I will need all the info I can get. 🙏🏼
One last thing (and this should go without saying), please refrain from making any ableist comments. Yes, we all share an intense dislike for Ms. Dacy, but that does not excuse picking on anyone just for being physically limited and unable to do certain things like holding something with their hands or pointing out one’s bodily imperfections. Thank you.
If any of you want to add me on IG my username is @thegreatwill1996 or just DM me on here. Either way works. :)
With warm regards, -W.

2023.02.03 01:12 MagicMayhem117 Surviving Ch.22

First Previous Next
David was excited.
He knew, logically, that it was just a job. Millions of others throughout the universe did the same thing he would be doing every day, and many considered it a dead-end job. But that knowledge did nothing to dampen his enthusiasm.
It had taken years of preparation, of studying, of working harder than everyone around him to be the best at what he did. Someday, he vowed, he’d be working to help astronauts land on Mars. His knowledge would be used to make progress that would be remembered for centuries.
About a year from graduating, however, his goal had changed; a whole damn Federation of alien civilizations released thousands of terabytes of information on a single unassuming October night. He was ecstatic, and later immensely surprised at the apparent fact that few cared. Almost immediately he found a group of people who, like him, were ready to scour every little bit of information that was available. They weren’t friends, per se, but it was perhaps the closest thing any of them had. From then on it was like a challenge to see who could get off the planet first.
David still remembered the countless hours he spent scouring documents, reading and translating scientific papers from advanced beings long gone. He remembered visiting the brand-new stations to catch glimpses of the technology he’d only seen in diagrams, and e remembered booking one of the first commercial trips to space.
He remembered being the only one who knew how to operate the ship when the pilot fell unconscious.
How could he not? It was that little stunt that had caught the attention of some alien higher-ups. And so, only a few months of classes and exams later, he was working as an information analyst on a goddamn spaceship. Full of aliens.
Did he mention it was in space?
He wasn’t the only one. Rebecca, one of his friends rivals, had been just as invested as he’d been; though, while he was interested in the technology, she’d been fascinated with the people. It made sense; thousands of new languages, cultures, and customs to explore, complex systems of bureaucracy that had somehow evolved almost parallel to our own. And when she ultimately used what she knew to prevent what could have caused a war, she was practically forced into an ambassador position. Unfortunately that meant she was stuck on Earth most of the time, a fact that David took pleasure in rubbing in her face.
His job was surprisingly simple considering the classes he’d been forced through just a few months ago. All he had to do was monitor the scanners, making sure to receive any communication attempts and checking for any abnormalities. The ship he was on was only a scientific exploration vessel, but apparently that didn’t do much to deter pirates. So, in the case of some unknown signals coming from seemingly empty space, he’d let someone know.
He’d already spent a week getting trained, though to be honest all he needed was a day. It was almost insultingly simple. Nevertheless, today was his first official day, and nothing could take that away.
He practically pranced into his workspace, cheerfully greeting coworkers who looked a few harsh words away from collapsing. Sitting down, he spun slightly in his chair and worked on setting up a simple alarm system.
It had occurred to him almost immediately, when he’d been shown where he’d be working. He didn’t say anything, though. It was better to do it on his own and get paid for doing nothing; all it took was about a half hour of coding, setting up the system to alert him whenever anything was detected, and he was free to explore the ship.
The windows were truly stunning. There were a few specific sections of the ship designed to lock down if the glass broke, made for viewing space without interruption. They were strategically spaced out around the ship to give an almost 360° view of the stars, and due to the pull of gravity to the floor of each one it gave an illusion of hanging upside-down on many occasions. David’s favorite was when they were orbiting a planet; having to crane his neck upwards to look at a mass that big is uncomfortable, sure, but also incredibly surreal.
Luckily they’d arrived at a planet very recently. They wouldn’t stay long; the objective was to do a quick scan of the surface for a missing ship, but that had been done the day before and nothing was found. They would stay just a bit longer, though, in case of any wayward signals, but it almost seemed as though most were eager to leave. Like they didn’t expect to find anything, and the longer they were near it the more nervous they became.
The planet itself was beautiful. Around the same size as Earth, it was covered in significantly less water. A coworker had uneasily informed him that it ran underground for the most part, only feeding into the plants with roots deep enough to reach it.
It was because of this, apparently, that it had next to no grass. Instead, the surface was filled to the brim with trees of various types. You could tell the different biomes apart by their shade of green, and just as easily you could see where there was no water by the large expanses of pink-ish dirt. It was fascinating, and part of the reason he’d leapt at this job. If David could keep this pay to just sit for hours and look at stars and planets, then why do anything else?
He stayed there for a long time, eyes roving over the slowly shifting mass of dirt beneath him. Or, above him. Whichever one was true at the moment.
He was snapped out of his reverie by a shrill sound coming from his pocket. Alarmed, he rushed back to his… well, office would be generous. His desk. Sure enough, an alarm had popped up on his monitor, showing a repeating signal coming from the surface of the planet. He let out a sigh of relief. If it were pirates it would have come from space, and he was not eager to find out what a ‘space pirate’ looked like.
Assuming it was a stray signal from one of the few research buildings amongst the forests, he let it through without a supervisor present.
This was a mistake.
Immediately a beeping sound filled the surrounding area. Not very loud, but insistent. And it was one he recognized.
Working fast he recovered the coordinates of the S.O.S. signal and pinned it to his desktop. Before he left, he wrote it down on a pad of paper and slipped it into his pocket along with the exact time. Just in case.
Now he only had to make the insanely long trek to the management offices, on the other side of the ship. He groaned slightly.
It was only when he was halfway to his superior’s office that he noted how odd the situation was. First of all, the radar had scanned the planet’s surface and found nothing. Even stranger, an S.O.S. could only have come from another human, or at least someone who had already worked with them extensively. That, however, could be ruled out when considering how long terrans had been an official part of the Federation.
His deliberations paused when he reached his boss’s office. It had to be located fairly centrally, since it was difficult for their species to navigate in higher gravity. The door swung open before he even knocked.
“Ah, David. It’s great to see you. What can I help you with?” Nervously, he scooted forward a bit before speaking.
“Well, sir, uh, I have a few questions. About the ship we’re looking for.”
If he was surprised he didn’t really show it. Or maybe that was just David being socially inept. Regardless, he took the silence as an invitation to keep speaking.
“Were… were there any humans onboard?” He waited for an answer, and it came slowly.
“Yes. It was an education ship, meaning it carried a class and its respective teachers. If I recall correctly, there was one young terran onboard. Why do you ask?” David swallowed.
“Well, sir, it appears we have received a small message from the surface of the planet. I asked if there were any terrans because the message is in a language we call ‘Morse code’. It was quite obviously a distress signal, and I was wondering if it could be the same ship. Perhaps they crashed, and the survivors are trying to contact us. Whatever the case, I have the coordinates so we can go investigate–” David was cut off abruptly when his boss stood up. Any kindness had been wiped off of his face.
“David,” he started. It sounded like a warning. “Do not make jokes about serious matters. This is a professional vessel, and it will not be tolerated. Is that clear?”
“But- but sir! It’s not a joke, I swear. Look, come back with me, I’ll show you the beeping. I know it may not sound real, but the specific sequence of beeps is a typical way to communicate distress. Please.”
He looked at David, face still unreadable, before gesturing for him to walk.
Practically sprinting out of the room he rushed back to my chair. Thanks to his weirdly long legs he kept pace easily, and it wasn’t long before they got back.
To a very conspicuously quiet monitor, and a blank screen.
At this point David was sweating bullets. “Sir, please, believe me. Here,” he said, digging through his pockets. “I have the coordinates written right here. Something must’ve happened to the signal.” He shoved his hand forward, trying to hand the paper over, but his boss barely glanced at it. He looked back at David, and it seemed to him like his expression softened.
“Look, David, it’s your first day. We all make mistakes. Just make sure not to do it again.” He turned to leave, but his head was still facing him. Weird. “And one more thing. If they truly crashed onto that side of the planet they’re as good as dead. All of them.” He left.
“Wow, buddy, not at all suspicious or ominous,” David mumbled to himself. Then he sighed. He needed to investigate a bit.
Search results for the planet they were over all looked perfectly normal, at first. Until, that is, he looked at the dates. Everywhere he looked the articles were dated at over ten years, at least. Studies on the soil, fauna, settlements, and even some opinion pieces were all there in abundance, but none were recent.
He tried again, this time removing whatever restrictions had been put in place by management or any government entity. He’d picked that up from Lilia, who’d spent more time studying the programming language behind the files than their actual content. Apparently cyber security in space is a joke, which didn’t make much sense.
This time the results were a bit more fruitful. A lot of results were questions or posts on a semi-obscure forum-based social media, most of them wondering about the large amount of disappearances in the area. Many users had dubbed it the ‘pink zone’ because of the dirt, and because of an apparent dust storm that would appear over the area periodically. One very recent post referred to the Bermuda Triangle as the ‘pink zone of Earth’, and there seemed to be more questions than answers regarding the planet as a whole. It was difficult to differentiate fact from fiction with so many stories, and pinpointing an actual beginning was nigh impossible.
Frustrated, David decided to take a walk. Of course, he made sure his alarm system was still working, but he needed to clear his mind. The first place he thought to visit was, of course, the enormous window overlooking the planet.
It had been several hours since the signal had been sent, and in that time the ship had almost completed a full rotation around the surface. A part of David hoped he’d see something, though he knew that if scanners hadn’t caught anything it was unlikely he would.
What he saw on the horizon, however, was decidedly something.
A wall of dark clouds blotched out a large portion of land. On the edges it looked slightly pink, likely because of the dust that had been kicked up, but it was dense enough to block out most light.
At least, that was what it looked like at first.
David sat there for hours, transfixed, but the longer he looked the more he realized something wasn’t right. At first he’d been shifting his gaze around, taking in every small part that he could; but when he kept looking at one spot in particular, it became clear.
There was a pattern. Every fifteen minutes or so the swirls of air would run through the same paths, just shifted slightly in a single cardinal direction. It was smooth, sure, but unmistakable. Soon he was finding the same cloud repeated dozens of times in the enormous space, and noting the exact time it took between each one.
Rushing back to his desk he wrote down everything he’d figured out. He attached posts, compiled evidence, and added on the identities of the missing students. It had to be obvious. Enough doubt and nobody would feel inclined to do a thing about it.
Pressing send, he quickly scrolled down and selected a contact he knew well. Putting the phone up to his ear, he spoke before she could get a word in.
“Hey there, Rebecca. How do you think the army would feel about their first rescue mission in space?”

AN: Sorry for the delay on this one, had a college admission exam on Tuesday. Here's a quick important interlude to kick off the conclusion, hope you enjoy!

Psyched Wellness Pushing Through To Become A First Mover In Psychedelics
Psyched Wellness ($PSYC)
Intro
Coming from a bullish background in the cannabis sector, I've started to expose myself to the mushroom side of things. While the commercial market for amanita muscaria only emerged recently, the species boasts a long history of religious and spiritual use. The fly agaric mushroom, also known as amanita muscaria, contains the psychoactive compounds muscimol and trace amounts of another compound called muscarine. However, since it does not contain any psilocybin, it is not subject to state and federal laws that criminalize magic mushrooms. Amanita muscaria is different from classical psychedelics: psilocybin, LSD, DMT, and mescaline. Amanita Muscaria contains active chemical compounds that differ from classical psychedelics. Most classical psychedelics contain compounds that interact with serotonin receptors in the human brain.

2023.02.02 23:53 Suitable_Ganache9035 No anaesthesia during cybernetic surgeries???

So as you all know in the series you see David literally passing out because of the pain he has to endure while getting the cybernetics implanted.
I found this part surprisingly interesting because how messed up it is.
Now I’m wondering if this is a budget thing or depends on what implant someone would get. I assume getting an eye implant wouldn’t mean you’d be conscious while getting your fucking eye poked out☠️☠️

2023.02.02 23:35 Crusader_2 13 in 13 - Steven Moffat Era Review

This is part of a series of posts. You can find the rest of them here.
The Moffat Era is gigantic. Even though his run as showrunner only lasts two more series than RTD’s did, it feels much larger. Because of this, I think it makes the most sense to split this review into three parts: one for the Smith Era, one for the Capaldi Era, and a final one to talk about the era as a whole.
The Smith Era
Right out of the gates, Moffat proves that he’s going to be a different writer from Russel T Davies. Series 5 gives us a Doctor Who completely different from the one we knew while still retaining a sense of familiarity that is required for us to enjoy the show at this point in time. Steven Moffat, Matt Smith, Karen Gillan, and Arthur Darvill all prove that the show could continue without the beloved RTD and David Tennant by giving us a fantastic set of stories. To this day, Series 5 remains my all time favourite chapter of Doctor Who’s story so far, being the one for future series to beat.
Moffat continued this momentum with Series 6, but this time he added a few more turns. He makes the Eleventh Doctor’s second series completely different from his first by adding a large-scale mystery to it. The addition of The Silence puts not only Series 6, but the rest of the Smith Era, on a completely different trajectory from where it started. Add a different tone and mood to the series, and you’ve got yet another reinvention of Doctor Who as we know it.
For Smith’s final series, we got an adventure split into two parts. Series 7 tells both the story of the Pond’s gradual separation from the Doctor, and the story of the Impossible Girl at the same time. While the stories of Series 7 may be weaker than what we’d gotten used to in the last two series, there’s still a wide variety of interesting ideas on the table. Combine this with yet another shift in tone, and you’ve got yet another wildly different series from what we did before.
As many people viewing 13 in 13 will know by now, the Eleventh Doctor is my favourite Doctor yet. It’s Doctor Who at its best, and taking a look at the wide variety of stories and emotions presented throughout its 3 years really demonstrates how amazing it is. However, it doesn’t paint a whole picture for the Moffat Era. To do that, we need to combine it with what comes next.
The Capaldi Era
Moffat completely changes the idea of what Doctor Who can be in Capaldi’s first series. The show once again becomes revitalised in a brand new way, keeping the show fresh and almost immediately setting Series 8 apart from its predecessors.
Series 9 may not have the same shifts in tone that we kept seeing throughout the previous few series, but instead decides to do something more different. Rather than having 10 stories made up of mostly singular episodes, Moffat decides to compose the series almost entirely out of two-parters. This move, while more similar to what was done in the classic series, is something completely brand new for Nu-Who. Add on a much more character focused series finale, and you’ve got yourself yet another unique instalment for the show. Although it may once again not be my favourite, it’s hard to doubt that it is still very unique.
Finally, the Moffat Era closes off in Series 10. It’s a much more different series than what we’d gotten for the rest of the Capaldi Era. By the time Series 9 was finished, it became clear that the show was on a trajectory of becoming increasingly darker. Every series following the bright and ‘fairy tale’ inspired Series 5 becomes progressively less bright. This all changes Series 10, which ends Moffat’s stint as showrunner in a much more upbeat tone. This final shift in the emotions presented in each series makes Series 10 yet another wildly different Series from what we’d had before.
The Peter Capaldi Era paints an entirely different picture of what the Moffat Era looks like, but in order to truly understand it we need to combine the two.
Conclusion
One thing that remains constant throughout the rapidly changing Moffat Era is the fact that every series manages to bring something completely different to the table. Unlike the RTD Era, which while managing to create some amazing stories does get stagnant by the end, the Moffat Era always manages to do something different with each series. Whether it's a shift in tone or an entirely different Series structure, there’s always something different done in every series. They all have their unique identities and form together to create something quite special.
This can be very clearly demonstrated when we take a look at the top 10 episodes of this era
10. “Flatline”
9. “Last Christmas”
8. “Amy’s Choice”
7. “The Beast Below”
6. “Vincent and the Doctor”
5. “A Christmas Carol”
4. “Heaven Sent”
3. “World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls”
2. “The Eleventh Hour”
1. “The Time of the Doctor”
By watching these episodes, one can get a good idea of just how broad the Moffat Era went in the end. All ten of these episodes were fantastic in their own right, and by viewing them it can really be seen just how high this era really went. It may not have cemented itself into the pop culture of the day like RTD’s Era did, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a fantastic 7 years of television.
Next time, we crashland alongside "The Woman Who Fell To Earth" as we begin the Chibnall Era.
