A detailed step by step guide to making knives
2023.02.02 21:45 rm-minus-r A detailed step by step guide to making knives
I wrote up a few lengthy comments on how to make knives and someone pointed out that it'd make a good post, so here we go!
Knifemaking at the artisan scale (vs. mass produced) has been going through a really great revival lately. The options and materials that are available for a knifemaker now are better than they've ever been at any point in history to date. And the internet has really helped spread critical knowledge about how to make a good knife.
There's two main ways of making a knife - forging and stock removal.
- Forging is what most people think of when they hear about someone making a knife - a person banging hot metal with a hammer on an anvil with a coal forge.
- On the up side, forging is the least expensive way to get started. All you need is:
- Some inexpensive high carbon steel like 1084 (A 1/4" x 2" x 12" bar is just $14.88 here)
- Some slow cure epoxy, a drill and some inexpensive stainless steel rod stock to make the pins and the holes for the pins that will be used to anchor the knife handle with.
- Some material for the knife handle. The options are vast.
- Something to cut the shape of the knife out of your bar of steel. A cheap angle grinder will do great, and a hand saw with a metal blade will also work, although a bit slower.
- A cheap jig with a large file in it to create the bevels. This can be done without a jig, but I don't recommend it.
- Something to heat the steel up with in a uniform manner. Actual coal is hard to come by these days, and isn't cheap. But a simple MAPP gas torch and two cheap soft fire bricks will make the most affordable forge you've ever seen.
- A hard surface to shape the knife against. An inexpensive $50 chunk of railway track will more than do the job. Proper anvils are really, really expensive. Like this Nimba anvil for $2,500.
- A hammer. An inexpensive cross pein 3 lb mini sledge is a great starter option, especially if you use a grinder with a flap disk to make the face smooth (results in less hammer marks on your knife).
- Some oil to quench the red hot knife in. Three gallons of Canola oil works great. Don't use motor oil that's dirty, all sorts of nasty stuff can end up in your lungs with the smoke that comes off when quenching.
You take the following steps to forge a knife:
- Once you have your steel, draw an outline of your knife on a piece of paper. Mark where you want the handle pins to go. Cut it out and glue it to your bar of steel.
- When the glue is dry, use your hand drill to drill out holes for your two or more handle pins.
- Next, use an angle grinder with a cutting disk to cut the outlined shape from the bar of steel.
- Place your knife blank in the filing jig and proceed to file in your bevels. This can be time consuming and cramp inducing, but it's far better than doing it without any jig. At this point, the knife should be close to complete in terms of what the metal part of the knife needs to look like. The edge shouldn't be sharp, but about the thickness of a single dime. Any finer of an edge and it will get messed up during the quench.
- Test fit your stainless steel pins. Finding out that they don't quite fit after you've hardened the knife really sucks, because then the steel becomes nearly impossible to drill.
- Heat up your knife in your two brick forge until the steel won't stick to a magnet.
- As soon as the steel no longer sticks to a magnet, quench it in the canola oil.
- Let the blade cool to room temperature.
- Once it's at room temp, it's extremely hard and dropping it on a cement floor might cause the blade to crack in half.
- To fix that issue and have a knife blade that's still very hard but not fragile, we'll temper the knife by putting it in an oven and heating it up to 400 F and then letting it cool back down to room temperature. This should give us a hardness around 58-60 Rockwell.
- Note: Using your household oven for this might draw the ire of your significant other, as the burned oil smell from the knife can be surprisingly strong once it's heated back up.
- Now that the knife has been heat treated, it's time to clean up the metal with some hand sanding.
- Next, cut your handle material to rough shape and attach it to the knife with the pins you cut down from the stainless rod stock and a good amount of slow cure epoxy. Slow cure is ideal, because too many epoxies have a working time of 5 to 15 minutes, which can be waaaaay too short if you need to move things around a little.
- Wait 24 hours for the epoxy to cure. Once it has, you can begin sanding down the handle into a something that looks like a knife handle.
- Once the handle has been shaped, you can sharpen the edge of the knife till it'll cut a sheet of paper cleanly.
This will get you a quick and rudimentary knife, although forging and hammer control are things that take years to learn properly, so there's a step learning curve if you care a lot about how good the result looks.
Now to cover stock removal!
Forging is great and fun, but once you start going down that path, you realize the costs add up quickly.
- To really heat up your knife blank properly to the point where you can easily move the metal around with a hammer takes a great deal of heat. A two brick forge won't be able to supply that much heat.
- Coal isn't readily available, portable coal forges are a bit of a pain to work with and a proper coal forge takes up a good deal of room and needs really good ventilation. Plus coal is dirty as all get out. You will get coal dust everywhere and it will get all over you. It does not come out of clothes very easily at all.
- So you want a gas forge. Much cleaner, more compact, propane cylinders are plentiful and cheap to refill. Oh. Wait. Gas forges are really expensive! A decent one is $1,000. You can build your own for less, but how efficient it will be and how evenly it will heat the blade is a toss up. The money saved might not make the loss of time spent in building and testing worth it.
- A chunk of railroad track can work in a pinch, but you will rapidly discover its shortcomings and find yourself wanting a real anvil. Finding a used one that isn't beat to hell and back is difficult, mostly because collecting anvils has become trendy đ, driving up the price and greatly reducing availability. Expect to pay around $5 a pound currently if you can find a decent one, and 130 pounds and up is what you'll want. $650 for an anvil?! It still beats buying one new for $2,500. Don't be mislead by cheap anvil shaped objects, lest you waste your time and money.
- Hammer skills. Once you acquire a decent gas forge and anvil, you'll start hammering away at hot metal and finding out that getting good looking results is extremely difficult. The amount of manual dexterity and skill required to make something look good is extremely large and can take multiple years to build.
- Limited subset of metals that can be forged. There's a lot of really fantastic knife steels out there. CPM S35VN is really awesome looking! Oh, wait, it's not a steel that can be forged. You'll find out that the majority of high performance steels aren't suitable for forging. It's like being the kid that only gets red and orange paint while everyone else has every color of paint out there.
- Grinding, filing and sanding. So. Much. Sanding. Once you get something halfway decent, you'll find that you need to clean it up with a bunch of filing. Your hands will cramp up and it will take what feels like an eternity. And then comes the sanding to get a good surface finish. You will curse sandpaper after the first three or four hours straight of sanding. Why not use a power tool of some sort for all this grinding and sanding?
That takes us to stock removal, the other way of making knives. Stock removal is using a belt sander instead of a hammer and anvil to shape the metal into a knife. It has a lot of pros vs forging and a few cons.
Pros:
- Types of knife steel that can be used with stock removal. The sky is the limit! CPM S35VN! CPM-154! AEB-L! M4! Magnacut!
- Ease of shaping. Using a belt grinder definitely takes a fair amount of manual dexterity to get good looking results, but I'd say it takes less time to learn vs hammer skills to get something that will impress other people.
- No ventilation or expensive gas needed! You'll want to wear a respirator, as it generates a bunch of metal dust that is no bueno for your soft, pink lung tissue, but you won't have to go outside or build a hood and extractor setup or spend decent amounts of money on propane.
- Precision. Forging is messy in terms of getting the metal to go where you want it to. It will bulge, curve and squish as you hammer it, making shaping difficult and time consuming. With a belt grinder, once you remove that metal, it's not going to affect anything around it. You can grind out exactly the shape you want. This is surprisingly critical.
- Speed. Once you get past basic looking knives and want to do something fancy, forging becomes fairly time consuming, like trying to get somewhere quickly on a bicycle. Using a belt grinder is like going somewhere in a top speed dragster by comparison.
Cons:
- Grinder cost. You'll want to use 2"x72" size sanding belts, which are the standard for knife making. You can use smaller 1"x30" belt grinders, but they're more difficult to work with due to the size of your potential work area. 2x72 grinders aren't cheap. An inexpensive single speed grinder with motor runs around $800. It runs at one speed, and that speed is "too fast". You'll rapidly find out you need a variable speed grinder. And one that allows for various attachments and grinding positions. And one with a bigger motor, as you'll bog down a 1 HP motor far too easily. Oh, wait, now you're spending around $4,000 for a good one!
- Cost of sanding belts. You'll rapidly find out that inexpensive aluminum oxide sanding belts wear out very quickly when grinding steel. They're decent for shaping handles, but you'll really want ceramic belts. Expect to pay around $10 per ceramic belt. When you're first starting out, you will go through a lot of belts in the process of making a knife. Four or more, easily. Before you know it, you've spent $40 to $80 in sanding belts alone for a single knife!
- Metal dust. So much metal dust. It gets everywhere. You can't use dust extractors that are suitable for woodworking shops, due to hot sparks and the potential for fires. A five gallon bucket of water on the floor directly under your grinder helps take care of the hot spark issue, but the dust still gets in the air and coats everything. Metal dust sucks. Hope you didn't have anything in your garage that you wanted to keep clean!
- A respirator is an absolute must. Your lungs are soft and pink, and react very badly to metal dust. Unless you want lifelong health problems, you'll be wearing a somewhat uncomfortable respirator the entire time you're using the grinder.
- Noise. A hammer hitting something on an anvil is quite loud, you should be wearing hearing protection. With a grinder though, between the motor and the belt noise, you will have to wear hearing protection if you don't want to go deaf very rapidly.
- Heat treating. With forging, you have a gas forge you can use for simple heat treating. But those fancy knife steels you can now use since you're going the stock removal route? They all have complex heat treating requirements where you need to keep it within a few degrees of a certain temperature for a very specific amount of time. This is far beyond what you could do by hand with a gas forge. You can send your blades out for heat treating, and it's not horrible at $36 a knife blade, but it's not great either. And you lose so much time in the process of shipping it out and waiting for it to come back that correcting any mistakes can rapidly become very, very time consuming. Want to make a knife for someone on a short timeline? Good luck!
- So you'll really, really want your own digitally controlled knife kiln. Be prepared to spend $1,500 to $2,000 for a good one. You can build your own more cheaply, but that has its own share of drawbacks.
Stock removal is considerably more expensive than forging. You'll be able to work faster, more precisely and use any knifemaking steel under the sun, but if you have an average income, you will find the cost a bit on the painful side.
What steps do you take to actually make the knife though?
Roughly speaking, the steps to make a knife via stock removal are extremely similar to the ones you'll take when going the forging route.
- Sketch out your blade design, put it on paper, glue it to some properly sized metal stock.
- Drill holes for the handle pins.
- Cut out the outer profile of the knife with an angle grinder or portaband metal saw.
- A portaband saw and stand will make this job a lot easier and not overheat your steel , but you're looking at nearly $500 for that.
- Angle grinders generate a great amount of heat, causing your steel to harden around the edges, and require an extra annealing heat treating step you might otherwise not need. And creating precise cuts is difficult. Forget about making cuts that are anything other than a straight line.
- Use your belt grinder to shape the bevels and other areas as needed.
- Turn on your knifemaking kiln and heat treat the blade, or send it out for heat treating.
- Grind your edge close to its final dimensions.
- Sand, sand, sand to get a good surface finish. A belt grinder can make this quicker, but you will need to hand sand towards the end, and you'll spend an unpleasant amount of time doing so.
- Drill holes in your knife handle slabs.
- Shape your knife handle slabs to the rough outline they need to be.
- Use epoxy to glue up the slabs and put your pins in.
- Once the epoxy has cured for about a day (if you're using the nice slow cure stuff), come back and use your belt grinder to shape the handle. Be ecstatic that you have a belt grinder, because you can do this so much faster and more precisely than you could before with hand tools!
- Sharpen the edge of your knife. You can do this by hand with some diamond stones or nice water stones, but a sharpening jig will give you a far sharper and more precise edge, with far better performance. You can achieve close to the same results sharpening by hand, but it requires a lot of manual dexterity and has a steep learning curve.
If you've gotten to the end of this post, congrats! I'm happy to answer any questions about knifemaking that you are curious about!

2023.02.02 17:10 ETWPhilly How to Prepare Heavy Equipment for Transportation
Whether youâre on the farm or on the construction site, having the right equipment for the job is essential. In some cases, this means transporting equipment from one storage facility or job site to another. Transporting heavy equipment is an involved process that requires careful planning and execution.
There are a few necessary steps you should take to prepare your heavy equipment for the road, such as adhering to regulations, conducting inspections and securing the equipment.
1. Obtain the Necessary Permits
A top priority when youâre preparing to transport heavy equipment is to find out if there are any special hauling permits you might need. The
federal government has set maximum limits for width and weight of loads on the highway, but it is up to states to determine how to handle issuing permits for loads that exceed the limits. Each state also has its own transportation regulations for heavy equipment.
Youâll likely have to pay a fee and follow certain rules to safely transport your heavy equipment from Point A to Point B without causing too much of an inconvenience to other people on the roadway. This may include only being allowed to make the trip during certain days and times, traveling with a pilot car or two and marking your oversize load with lights and flags.
Check with the department of transportation in the state where you plan to haul heavy equipment to see what sorts of designations your load will fall under. Before you check in with the state, take careful measurements and weigh the equipment, so that you have an idea of the type of permit you may need and can fill out the appropriate application. Be sure to apply for any necessary permits well before you plan to make the trip since it will take some time to obtain the permit.
2. See If You Can Avoid Oversize or Overweight Designations
If youâre concerned about the need for permits, you may be able to avoid them altogether. See if there is any way you can break down your equipment in order to stay within the standard limitations for height, width, length and weight. Even if you need to transport parts of your equipment separately, it may be worth it to avoid the fees and inconvenience of obtaining a permit.
If the equipment is overweight, then you may be able to reduce the weight by removing attachments and work tools. You can also remove tools and attachments to reduce the dimensions of your equipment. In fact, some states require you to remove attachments like buckets or scoops before transporting equipment. You can also lower the overall height by using a drop-deck or step-deck trailer, or if that isnât low enough, a lowboy trailer.
When it comes to avoiding a wide load designation, thereâs typically not much you can do. Many types of heavy equipment fit within width regulations, but larger machines such as cranes, excavators, graders, dozers and more can extend beyond the 8.5-foot width standard. You may be able to remove tires or tracks to reduce the width, but in these cases, youâre typically better off getting whatever permits you need for a wide load.
3. Check the Manufacturerâs Securement Recommendations
Before transporting heavy equipment, you should always consult the manual that came with your equipment to see if the manufacturer has offered any recommendations for transport. These recommendations may go beyond mere advice. In some cases, ignoring the manufacturerâs guidelines on how to secure heavy equipment could void your warranty for the equipment.
When it comes to securing the equipment, the manufacturer has likely designated specific points on the equipment to attach tie-downs. Whenever possible, use these designated attachment points to transport the machinery safely.
The manufacturer may weigh in on more than securement in the manual. They can also list important preparation measures, such as disconnecting the battery, draining any fluids or covering certain parts. The manufacturer knows their equipment best, so carefully follow their recommendations, regardless of whether the warranty is at stake.
4. Inspect the Equipment
Itâs smart to inspect your equipment before transporting it in case there are any problems which could be safety concerns. Your inspection should ensure that the equipment is in good overall condition and, more specifically, that securement points arenât compromised.
You should also check the tire pressure on any vehicles that have rubber tires rather than tracks. If the pressure is too low, this could make it more difficult to safely secure the vehicle.
Finally, ensure the vehicle is clean enough that dirt or debris wonât get in the way of necessary friction or fall off of the equipment as it moves down the highway. Itâs common for farm equipment and construction equipment to be caked with large clumps of dirt and mud, so cleaning is often a necessary step before moving equipment.
5. Inspect the Trailer
Inspecting the trailer that will hold the equipment is just as important as inspecting the equipment to be hauled, if not more. One of the most important things to check is the trailerâs anchor points. The anchor points should be solid and free of any signs of damage that indicates they may not hold up during the transport process.
You also want to make sure the trailer is clean. A layer of oily residue, dirt or debris of any kind can reduce the traction you need to move equipment onto the trailer and hold it there securely. If the trailer is wet, iced over or covered in snow, this can also create a slick surface, so be sure the trailer is not only clean but dry, as well.
You should also ensure the trailer is sitting level before you load your machinery onto it. Any issues of tilting could be exaggerated once you add weight onto the trailer, which can be dangerous. Finally, you should also inspect any equipment youâre using to secure your equipment, such as straps, chains and binders. Make sure this equipment is all in excellent shape and rated to handle your load.
6. Thoroughly Secure the Equipment
Heavy machinery securement is one of the most critical aspects of preparing construction equipment for transport. Be sure to follow any requirements set out by your equipmentâs manufacturer and your state when it comes to securing your equipment. The
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) specifies that all attachments should be lowered and secured and that the parking brake on the equipment be set.
They also specify that you must use at least four tie-downs to secure the equipment in order to prevent it from moving in any direction. Each of these tie-downs must have a minimum working load limit (WLL) of 5,000 lb. Itâs also important to note that the total WLL of all tie-downs put together should add up to at least half of the cargoâs weight, which means youâll need to add some additional tie-downs for heavier equipment. The tie-downs should be attached at designated mounting points or at the front and rear.
There are many types of tie-downs to choose from, but itâs best to
use chains when possible. Itâs one of the best ways to secure your equipment. Steel strapping is another strong option to consider. In addition to tie-downs, you may need to add other securement measures like edge protection, friction devices or, in the case of vehicles with wheels, wedges or chocks.
7. Cover and Secure Vulnerable Parts
In addition to securing the vehicle as a whole, youâll also want to secure any loose parts that could move around or be damaged during transport. For example, itâs a good idea to wrap up levers and latch or zip-tie doors shut.
Youâll also want to cover any parts that shouldnât be subject to the elements during transport â especially if there is a chance of precipitation. This includes covering the smokestack on the vehicle, for example. Every piece of equipment is different, so make sure you pay careful attention to what parts may need to be covered and secured in each case.
Once the machinery and its various parts are secured, conduct one final inspection to make sure the vehicle is ready for transport. You can never be too cautious when hauling heavy equipment since it only takes one point of weakness to create a safety hazard or damage your equipment.
8. Verify Your Route
Transporting construction equipment should go smoothly if you have everything in order ahead of time. One thing to plan in advance is your route. When youâre heading somewhere in your car, you may rely on a GPS or your own memory to get you there, but you need to take some extra steps when planning your route for the transport of heavy cargo.
You can start with the most efficient route from Point A to Point B and then analyze the route to make sure it wonât include any heavy traffic areas, construction zones, roads that are too narrow or older bridges or overpasses that are too low to provide enough clearance.
Some issues that can arise are impossible to plan ahead for, such as wrecks that block the roadway. If youâre worried about this scenario, have a pilot car stay far enough ahead of the trailer to identify any potential problems along the way. The driver of the trailer can reroute if needed.
9. Plan Ahead for Unloading
You donât want to get to your destination and then try to figure out how to unload the equipment. To make the process as smooth as possible, plan ahead for unloading.
Determine what people and equipment youâll need to get the vehicle unloaded from the trailer. Be sure to allow plenty of time to unload the equipment carefully, unwrap loose parts, reattach accessories and do whatever else needs to be done before the equipment is ready for use.
Also, note the exact location where the driver of the trailer should park and communicate this to the driver. Make sure the parking area is stable and level since sloped ground can cause the machinery to fall off during unloading.
One long-term study found that equipment overturning was the main cause of fatal accidents during loading and unloading heavy equipment.
10. Depend on an Experienced Heavy Equipment Hauler
You may be surprised by how much goes into preparing heavy equipment for transport. Because it is such an involved process, you want to make sure you only work with trustworthy, reliable freight transportation services. Just because someone owns a trailer that can fit your equipment, that doesnât necessarily mean they have the necessary expertise for construction equipment shipping.
Look for a company that is licensed, bonded and insured and who has plenty of experience hauling heavy machinery. It should also have the right trailers for all your hauling needs, whether itâs a standard flatbed trailer, a drop deck, a slide-axle tilt step deck, a removable gooseneck lowboy or a rollback tilt-bed truck.
The right heavy equipment transport solution may not be the closest company or the first one you find in your search. Do your due diligence to make sure you partner with a company you can count on to help you safely load and transport your heavy equipment from job site to job site.

2023.02.02 15:27 rephlexi0n Behold the Pale Sun
When I was younger, I was one who indulged in music, parties, and various intoxicating substances that would enhance those experiences. I count myself among the many who allowed their hedonism to run wild with enthusiasm. It came then as no surprise that I found myself attending festivals with groups of friends who, at the time, shared the same reckless mindset as me.
For the record â and I say this without pride â I am experienced in drug-taking. While I donât particularly regret it, there was one experience that halted my drug use altogether. At the time, my fellow partygoers scoffed at this decision, since I didnât see any worth trying to explain to them what had happened. They would most likely have chalked it all up to a substance-induced hallucination. Iâve had such hallucinations in the past, which tend to be a result of sleep deprivation and frequent redosing. I can safely say none of them compared to the raw reality of this experience.
It was the start of summer, and my friend Rachel had informed me that a group of them were heading to an EDM festival a couple states over. Iâll refrain from divulging the location, as I feel I have already revealed too much by specifying my home country, but I was quick to take up the invitation. Hastily, I booked a ticket from the third batch release and began making preparations for the trip. It was a three-day-weekend festival, so tents and other supplies were required. Of course, I was readily prepared with all the required equipment, the festival most certainly not being my first.
Iâll spare you the long car journey to the location, but we could barely contain ourselves. With me were my buddies Chris, Robbie and, of course, Rachel. We hadnât been to this one before and we vigorously discussed many topics, including how we were going to smuggle in our pills and powders. I, myself, opted to bring MDMA powder (often coined âecstasyâ, when in pill form), and a few LSD blotters, planning to candy-flip for the duration. I stuck to the ever-true âballsingâ method, which is exactly as it sounds â stuffing your baggies into your boxers before going through security.
For people like us, the place was pretty much Nirvana. It was set up in a rural area, bordering hilly woodland on one side. At least a dozen enormous festival tents were set up in a semi-circular fashion, all playing EDM, but with different artists in the line-up. Paradise, at the time.
The first day went by in a blur. I was quick to dose up on MDMA, which kept me dancing through 8 hours of bliss. I donât recommend redosing, but damn if it isnât hard to avoid when everyone around you is doing just that. Peer pressure at its finest. Weâd joined with another group of like-minded individuals by the end of the day, and we decided weâd camp together. Robbie had the wonderful idea to have a campfire, but with the rules and regulations weâd have to go somewhere a little more removed.
We decided to pack up our tents and move over into the woods that bordered the property. I was sceptical at first but we came across a really nice spot at the top of a hill, from which the terrain descended and gave us a clear view of the treetops across the forest. Pretty much the perfect spot to watch the fiery sunset commonly associated with summer evenings, whilst also being out of eye and earshot from any uptight security personnel.
After setting our tents up, drinking began without hesitation. The sun was getting low, and all in all I felt great, despite the onset of a comedown headed my way. We were able to gather up twigs and sticks fairly quickly, being in a forest, and used spent beer packaging to get the fire going.
âHey, want a bump?â Chris said, who I was sat next to on a fallen log near the campfire. He offered a bag of shardy powder which I immediately recognised as ketamine⌠how could I have refused? It was such a perfect moment I couldnât put down a little dissociation.
âYou even have to ask?â
A wide grin grew on his face and he pulled out his car keys to scoop the powder. He sniffed a generous heap of the stuff before handing it to me. I crushed the bag a little, something Chris had forgotten to do beforehand, then took out a miniature, snow-covered mountain and practically inhaled it. I tasted the drip a little, but it wasnât so bad in comparison to what Iâd been consuming earlier in the day. I felt it immediately.
âWoah, holy shit dude. Feels like something theyâd tranquilise a fuckinâ rhino with,â I said, words already becoming jumbled and merged together.
âI know, right? Didnât even open it earlier, been saving it for now.â
Robbie, eagle-eyed for intoxicants, practically teleported onto the log next to Chris. Probably just a side-effect of the drug, but his sudden manifestation caused me and Chris to erupt in laughter. Robbie acted jokingly offended at this,
âDidnât know there was an isomer that made you turn into an asshole!â he chuckled.
âYeah, itâs called dickhead-amine,â Chris said, barely containing his giggles.
âWell, Iâm feeling a little too respectful right now, mind sharing?â
âOf course,â replied Chris, passing the paraphernalia to Robbie.
Just then, a different feeling swept over me. It wasnât a feeling of nausea, or anxiety, but it was like the late-day sunlight was coming in pulses. Like, I could feel the rays, as if they had weight and substance to them, increasing and decreasing in intensity as they swept across my face. Iâd never felt anything like it from this type of drug before, so at the time I thought it was just the combination of whatever other chemicals were coursing through my veins in that moment. âTripping outâ, as one might call it.
I chose to dismiss it and continue partying. Someone from the other group had brought out their speaker, a heavy and chunky thing that blasted bass into our bones. With the others dancing about the camp, I opted that one final re-dose of MDMA couldnât hurt.
Iâm not sure how long I flailed about in joy for, but when I went to sit down on the log for a breather the horizon was already burning with a deep orange.
âNeed a cold one?â asked Robbie, whoâd somehow pulled off the same teleportation trick from earlier.
âWha- shit dude, you got me again!â
âHeh, just one of my natural skills. You want one or not?â
âYeah, yeah, crack me one,â I gasped, the exhaustion from the day finally catching up to me. Robbie opened a can and handed it to me, though it wasnât as cold as heâd promised.
We sat there chatting for a while, gazing over the flittering leaves below which reflected the dusk light. It felt serene, and I knew the money spent was not wasted.
I became distracted at some point by a barely audible sound, somewhere off in the distance. Again, I thought nothing of it â I wasnât a stranger to the hallucinations brought on after heavy drug use, and Iâd seen much worse. But the sound wasnât diminishing after some time, so I strained my ears to see if I could make out anything in particular. A light breeze had picked up which made it more difficult, but after a short while I could definitely make something out.
Machinery. That was the first word that came to my mind in an attempt to describe what I was hearing. The heavy clanking and whirring of fuel-powered mechanisms operating on a building site. I didnât even notice Robbieâs absence at this point until I looked over, and saw there were only a few of us outside now, two making out messily, and Chris and Robbie still dancing.
I sat and listened for a few minutes. I could swear that the sounds were getting closer, but they were still too distant to be certain. I checked the time, then became a little confused â 10PM. I glanced back up to the sky; the sun hadnât even touched the horizon yet, but the sky around had definitely grown darker, with stars becoming apparent. A thought rose in my mind, this shit has me TRIPPING. This was absolutely true, but the whole situation just seemed wrong in some way.
At that moment, I shifted my gaze downwards to see Rachel standing below on the slope of the hill, facing away from the camp. Squinting in confusion, I called out,
âHey Rache, that you? What are you doing down there?â
There was no response, not even a flicker of movement to suggest sheâd registered my call. I grew concerned, thinking sheâd taken too much, and I heaved myself up off the log to go and help her back up the hill.
Rachel was standing with the strangest posture. Her shoulders were slumped so low it was like they had been dislocated, and her head lulled backwards. I picked up the pace a bit, growing more worried at her condition, when in all my carelessness I caught my foot on a root protruding from the dirt.
I tripped head-over-heels, almost comically, and rolled down to the bottom of the hill in a tumble of dust and twigs. Luckily, it wasnât too high or steep, but it was far enough that upon looking back up, the firelight was but a faint orange haze which leaked over the brim of the hill.
I was too shaken to realise at first, but after observing my surroundings I could see that Rachel was nowhere to be found. Surely she wasnât so fucked up as to not notice the mess that I was rolling right past her. But then, where was she? No one stood above me on the slope, and I couldnât see anyone else around me.
I realised then that this was one of those stupid comedown hallucinations. I was pissed, seeing my white trainers now coated in a fine layer of brown dust, along with the rest of my clothing. Still, even with the realisation, I found little comfort sitting on my ass, alone, in a quickly darkening forest.
I picked myself up off the ground and dusted my body down, but before turning to make my way back to camp, something caught my eye. The trees now blocked much of the sky, but the sun was still there, seemingly in the exact same place as earlier.
From somewhere beyond the treeline above, there were these⌠lines, reaching upward toward the sun. Very thin and barely visible, but they became more apparent the longer I stared. They moved in the most peculiar way, like hanging cables or tubes under the influence of gravity, swaying in curved arcs and terminating at the sunâs edge. I wasnât so quick to credit this to some crazy visuals, however. I looked on in curiosity as more and more of these tubes began attaching themselves to the sun.
The sun, which was⌠brighter, now? It was a dim orange previously, as sunsets tend to be, but now it looked more like it would during dawn. Almost dazzlingly bright. I thought it had taken on a faint bluish hue, but with the drugs messing with my visual processing I didnât dwell on that idea long.
I willed myself to turn away and head back up the hill. My friends were probably worried with me gone, though they could equally have been completely unaware of my disappearance. I crawled back over the top to see only Chris and Robbie sitting near the dimming campfire.
My knee fell on and snapped a twig, leading Chris to look over to the noise. He visibly jumped when he saw me, then fell back into confusion as he glanced between me and Robbie, waiting for someone to speak.
âWhat?â I shouted over, unsure of what had them in such bewilderment.
â[my name]? Man, stop fucking around, I thought you were some homeless dude or something,â said Chris, letting out a sigh of relief after understanding the situation.
âWhat are you talking about? I went down there to get Rachel, she was- wait, where is Rachel?â
âShe went to bed, like, 20 minutes ago. And you turned in, like, an hour ago!â said Robbie.
âWh- Robbie, Iâve been down in the forest for, uh,â I checked my watch. 12AM, âtwo⌠hours?â
Chris and Robbie didnât reply, instead looking between each other with a tinge of fear. Without a word, Chris stood and walked over to my tent, which upon opening he found to be empty.
âWhat the fuck? We both saw you go into your tent and zip it up,â Chris exclaimed, worry evident in his tone.
âMan, I think weâre all just real fucked up,â I laughed, dry of humour. They grunted in agreement, but I couldnât help but think of what Chris just said. Had they both hallucinated my likeness at the same time?
âHey, [my name], you alright? Youâre sweating buckets,â asked Robbie, and he hurled a bottle of water in my direction, âyou havenât forgotten about hydration, have ya?â
Now that he said it, I did feel strangely hot. I grabbed the bottle and downed it in a few seconds, before I stood back up and walked over to the communal log-bench. We didnât talk much after that, but instead hit Robbieâs bong a few times to calm the nerves. Stupidly, it hadnât occurred to me at the time to ask if they also saw what I saw - I was simply too enamoured by the situation. Both of them went to bed after, but I told them I wanted to sit outside a bit longer to relax.
The relaxation didnât come, though. To my dismay, the sun still hadnât set, refusing to budge from its perch above the horizon, and I could again hear those mechanical sounds from earlier, echoing across the valley. There was no doubt this time â they were louder, clearer. Which, logically, meant that whatever was producing the sounds had moved closer.
I was still under the impression of some grand hallucination, when I heard a voice. No, that doesnât do it justice. I couldnât make out any words, but I somehow knew inherently that I had heard a voice amongst the distant clanging, not as a separate entity, but as if the industrial soundscape was synchronising itself in such a way that the combined din formed a low, metallic voice. Again, no words were apparent, instead a disordered mumbling that rang in between my ears.
I noticed then, the most bizarre sight yet. Despite the obvious abnormality of the pale sun hanging in the dead of night, I looked closer to see these faint lines drifting on its surface, forming an array of patterns which were slightly dimmer than the rest of the sun.
Focusing more intensely now, it was⌠how do I even describe it? Iâd tripped countless times before, but it looked nothing like the colourful swirling visuals I was used to. It was like I was looking at an enormous, infinitely complex fractal, unfolding in writhing patterns of brighter and dimmer light.
The longer I stared, the further the noises synchronised themselves, building until I undoubtedly heard the words:
âThis one.â
It sounded so articulated, there was no way my mind had just conjured it up from the random combination of sounds. It came in waves, like an underlying tinnitus wavering in intensity in such a way as to form those exact words. The sky was now a black ocean dotted with its stars, heavily contrasting the intense ball of cold light I saw before me. The heat was clearly noticeable now as I found myself wiping sweat out of my eyes to continue looking.
I made the decision to smoke some more weed and drink some more beer, in hopes I could knock myself out and go to sleep. This was all getting too weird, even for a partying vet like myself. I packed a bowl and took a long, slow draw. As much as I didnât want to look, my eyes were magnetised to the concerning sight before me.
The squirming lines were wider now, and much, much dimmer, more of a dark grey than anything. I rushed to down a few beers, and halfway through my third a loud âclankâ made me jump and drop the can to the ground.
Furrowing my brow as if to ask the world around me to just stop whatever it was doing, I looked up one last time to see the patterns had ceased all movement, and were now almost black. Gaping. To my horror, they began to move again. No, the lines remained motionless, but the darkness within was writhing and⌠started to fall.
Swathes of tiny black shapes were pouring out of the sun right before my eyes, down into the trees below. At this point in my drug-induced delusion, my faith in the fact that this was a hallucination was dwindling. They kept pouring out, until I could see trees in the distance starting to shudder, leaves dancing about like a great stampede of something were shaking them. I didnât have the conviction to control myself anymore, and I started hyperventilating. The swaying treetops were getting closer, and a faint, horrible chittering noise became apparent, like how I imagined insects would sound if they were capable of laughter. The treesâ movement must have been less than half a mile away now.
I was paralysed. Whether I was now in full-fledged delirium or not wasnât my concern at the time â my eyes did not seem to betray me otherwise. Whatever were moving through the trees below were moving fast, and within 20 seconds they were within full earshot. The sounds coming from the darkness became unbearable, like nails scraping my eardrums, and then⌠nothing. Movement ceased and silence fell.
The fire still flickered dimly, preventing my eyes from adjusting to the swirling darkness weaving throughout the tree trunks downhill, and the crackling of the embers disturbed the thick, heavy silence permeating the camp. Suddenly, the sound of a twig snapping somewhere to my left broke my petrified state and my head snapped to the direction it had come from.
Rachel stood at the edge of the fireâs illumination. No, calling that thing Rachel would be an insult to her very existence. It looked like something with no knowledge of human physiology had attempted to rebuild her using individual body parts, its limbs constantly shifting and readjusting themselves in a fluid manner like it was trying to correct itself.
It took a step forwards, jolting me off of the log and onto my back. Rolling backwards, I pushed myself back off the ground, but it had not moved further. Instead, it opened its mouth, or, mouths â I couldnât tell how many it had at one time, constantly splitting and merging, combining and creating new holes. I couldnât see anything inside, just darkness. It began emitting these⌠vile, clicking and ringing noises which rose and fell, never finding a tone to settle on.
And, just like the sounds before, they started to synchronise into something semi-coherent. Whatever this was didnât seem to be able to copy Rachelâs voice. Still, I could not make out any clear words. Imagine someone who doesnât understand English hearing the language spoken. That is how I felt listening to this abomination, like an auditory stroke.
It appeared to give up after another moment and went quiet. Its âmouths'' instead began multiplying, growing and expanding over its skin like Swiss cheese, until nothing that resembled a human remained. My eyes grew painful trying to focus on whatever stood in my presence. It⌠nothing in my vocabulary can accurately describe the being. I canât really even remember how it looked; as hard as I try, the form was just mentally incompatible. I can recall dark lines and shapes, both sharp and organic, shifting in certainly more than three dimensions. There looked to be something peering out from the spasmatic blackness, something like monochrome faces all overlapping, separate but at the same time as one. They gazed out at me with an expression of intense sorrow, lips parting as if to talk, yet any words were snuffed out by that incomprehensible void.
After what felt like hours, but was probably seconds, it started to move again. And, as it moved, it began to take on a new form. Skin, hair, nails, fabric, all slipping and sliding, until⌠the logo on my polo shirt became visible, emerging from underneath a dark fold. While this happened, movement stirred from the darkness below, countless shifting footsteps disturbing the forest floor.
I wish I could describe further, and in more detail, but that was the breaking point for me. I dropped the still-smoking pipe, spun around and ran in the opposite direction. I ran and ran onto the festival grounds, past a colourful sea of tents and drunk onlookers, before slipping on a cold puddle of someoneâs vomit, and falling face-first into the trash-littered ground.
I awoke in a medical support tent at 11.30AM. Looking down at my arms, they appeared terribly sunburnt, and the sight caused the accompanying pain to flare up over my skin. I winced and looked around to absorb my surroundings. A staff member came over to me then, a kind-looking middle-aged man, with a bottle of some sort of lotion and another of water.
âHey, kid. How you feeling? You got some terrible burns there, forget your sunscreen?â he asked.
âI- uh- y-yeah, lost it somewhere yesterday,â I lied.
âYou gotta be more careful with that, kid. You can get skin cancer from it, yâknow.â
âYeah, thank you. Um, whatâs that bottle you have there?â
âOh, this? Just something to ease the skin. Trust me, you wonât wanna leave here without it.â
The burning that arose as I reached out for the bottle confirmed his statement. My skin was the colour of a sunset, and felt as hot as the sun itself. The thing is, I did put on sunscreen, multiple times throughout the day, and I donât burn easily anyway. When we were at the camp I felt absolutely fine. Well, before whatever happened that made me flee in terror.
Chris and Robbie were waiting for me outside, faces carved with sombre looks. They had with them all our things packed up, tents, leftover drinks, all of it. My heart dropped when they told me that theyâd found Rachelâs tent empty in the morning along with mine. A search team was called onto the site to scour the woods for any evidence of where she could have gone, but their efforts had thus far been fruitless. Though, I had a feeling they would not find even the slightest indication that she had ever been there, bar her tent and belongings.
Robbie insisted on staying behind to help with the search while Chris and I made the journey home. The leather seats in Chrisâ car were a painful nuisance, sticking to my clammy, sunburnt skin at the slightest touch. I didnât have the energy to complain, though. We arrived back at my house and called Robbie with a dwindling hope which, for me, had already dried up completely, but of course, no news had surfaced.
Rachel was never found. Even after the case was extended into multiple jurisdictions, any trail the police may have had soon ran cold. I havenât told my friends, but I know now that Rachel is undoubtedly lost forever to something beyond our comprehension. After all, how could they believe me, given our drug use that night? Grieving is one thing, but grieving knowing you canât tell the truth about what happened is a different beast altogether.
While I was changing my clothes that day, I noticed something peculiar. My blue polo no longer held the embroidered brand logo on its left breast as it once had. I still shudder at the implications of what may have happened if Iâd stuck around any longer to find out.
I donât participate in that life anymore, really. I still see those friends, but on the craziest of nights I never go further than drinking or smoking, usually not in combination. Probably for the best, anyway.
Those words linger in my head, still. âThis one.â Were they referring to me? I really donât have any rational explanation for what happened that night, what those beings were, their motives⌠needless to say, the image of that pale sun unfolding is forever etched into my memory.
All I can say now is that if the sun stops setting, and hangs there like a glazed-over eye, donât stay to see it open up. Donât be brave, or curious. Just get as far as you can from wherever you find yourself â or be taken somewhere our minds were never intended to witness.

2023.02.02 14:42 ForceSpike Can anyone recommend a mat for the Nautilus T618?
Just grabbed a Nautilus T618 and am looking for recommendations for an equipment mat to put underneath it. The stated dimensions of the treadmill are 78"x37.6" so it's a little awkward as most are either too short or too narrow. Can't really use something like a horsestall as they are 6ft long, so probably will need something 40"x80" at minimum? Hard to tell from just the diagram. Just looking for the most cost effective mat that will protect the floor underneath a bit. Most ones this size seem to be crazy expensive or thin and poorly reviewed (like the proform one). Thanks.

| #NIOCORP- NYTIMES ARTICLE ~Nebraskans Are Sitting on Strategic Metals. Is Mining a Patriotic Duty?~ Nebraskans Are Sitting on Strategic Metals. Is Mining a Patriotic Duty? - The New York Times (nytimes.com) Mr. Honan, NioCorpâs chief operating officer, on Beverly Beetheâs farm. âThe rocks are different here,â he said. By Dionne Searcey Photographs by Arin Yoon ELK CREEK, Neb. â In this rural part of Nebraska, county-board agendas include moratoriums on solar farms and some residents scowl when they pass the handful of wind farms that have sprouted. But the idea of a new mine that could help power the transition to renewable energy has received broad support. The tenor of these quiet flatlands, where deer bounce across gravel roads and neon sunsets scream across the long horizon, would change dramatically if mining for metals like niobium, scandium, titanium and rare earths begins. But many people here think Southeast Nebraska, dotted with dying downtowns and aging residents, could play a small part in helping to solve a full-blown geopolitical crisis that Doc Evans, a Johnson County commissioner, summed up like this: âThe trouble with China.â Mr. Evans and numerous others welcome the digging that a company called NioCorp wants to begin because they feel itâs their patriotic duty. For too long, they said, the United States has depended on other countries for metals and minerals the nation could find at home, if only someone were willing to spend the money and effort to retrieve them. âI think itâs good for our country,â said Don Othmer, who lives in Elk Creek, where the mine would be. Relying on other countries for raw materials means âweâre kind of held hostage,â he said. Geological fate meted out hundreds of millions of years ago left the United States lacking rich stores of many of the raw materials found on the federal list of minerals critical to the economy and national security. The country has relied on imports of certain minerals and metals that are abundant in China and elsewhere and are needed for Americaâs fighter jets, building materials and cellphone batteries. The United States is determined to no longer be dependent on other countries, particularly now as these materials, which are also used in making electric-vehicle batteries and for transmitting energy from wind turbines and solar panels to the power grid, are key ingredients for an economy that relies on renewables. Measures enacted under the Biden Administration offer major incentives to mining companies and processing facilities to do their work domestically. But the biggest incentive is the market demand that has increased the price of metals including rare earths â a set of elements found together, with names like terbium and dysprosium â making it newly economical for mining companies to scour the nation for even small amounts that can be scraped from underneath the soil Downtown Tecumseh, Neb., one of the nearby towns that would feel ripple effects from a new mine. NioCorp wants to bring in hundreds of workers and heavy drilling equipment to dig the metals. After decades of exploration and looking for financing, it soon may be able to get started, buoyed by new demand for a domestic supply of critical minerals and metals that can power Americaâs transition to renewable energy. And the company has embraced the messaging that plays well in this conservative area that counts patriotism as a key value. âIt will help America,â said Mark Smith, chief executive of NioCorp, which is based in Colorado. The federal government is hoping to find new deposits of minerals and metals by carrying out projects to digitize information from 100-year-old geological maps and by flying survey planes all over the country. The government is also financing programs to comb through waste piles of old mines, including coal ash, for materials once deemed worthless. One program tests ways to sift minerals and metals from Superfund sites. âCan the U.S. meet its own mineral supply needs? Itâs a big, complicated question,â said Graham Lederer, researcher at the United States Geological Surveyâs Geology, Energy & Minerals Science Center. âAnything could be a resource. You just need to develop the technology and bring the cost down.â Just outside Elk Creek, pronounced by some locally as âElk Crick,â workers from NioCorp are clearing trees to prep the land for digging, should it succeed in getting more financing. The company, now listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, said it has lined up German buyers for some of its niobium. Hundreds of people and a new governor-elect turned up for a series of town halls in November held by NioCorp. The meetings drew investors from Kansas City who snapped photos as they wandered Elk Creekâs tiny downtown past a bank, a post office, small grocery store and the Village Tavern, which is known for its signature drink, the Elk Creek Water (Mountain Dew, Squirt, 7 UP, vodka and gin) as well as an annual event where beef testicles are served (the âNut Feedâ). âWeâve had a harder time keeping the younger generation here,â said Don Gottula, who owns a propane shop on Main Street. âWe need a booster shot, I guess you could say.â As the hunt for more materials used in batteries continues, energy officials predict more scenes across America like the one in Nebraska, a state with abundant cornfields and cattle but no operating mines. In Utah, a mine has begun producing tellurium. A new cobalt mine in Idaho is expected to be operational this year. New lithium mining is planned for North Carolina, and in California companies are trying out new technology to extract lithium from geothermal brines. The world may need more than 300 new mines in the next decade to meet demand for electric-vehicle and energy-storage batteries, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. In Nebraska, metals that were a distant memory from high school chemistry class have become part of regular conversation. Like most people in the Elk Creek area, any of the dozen or so farmers who gather for morning coffee several days a week before the lanes light up at Harvest Bowl in nearby Tecumseh can speak fluently about niobium. Coffee at Harvest Bowl on a recent morning included conversation about the mine. âDidnât they put that in Supermanâs underwear?â one joked on a recent morning. Niobium might help batteries hold a charge longer, another said, and thatâs a good thing out here where miles separate even gas stations. But did anyone ever consider what happens to the wind turbines and solar panels years from now when they no longer function? âWhen they wear out thereâs no place to go with them,â said Milton Buchholz, a retired farmer and former county roads department worker. The conversation turned to the prairie fires and dust storms that swept across parts of Nebraska last summer. The crop-withering drought just wonât let up. âIâm not convinced whether this is all man-made or God-made,â said Mr. Evans, the county commissioner who sat at a table near farmers in hats advertising pesticides and fertilizer and one that read âcow whisperer.â âI know that we may be contributing but who did it 100,000 years ago when we had an Ice Age?â he added. To build the mine here, workers would burrow nearly 2,500 feet into the earth, creating an underground mini city to operate machinery. Construction would take almost three years, requiring 400 workers and convoys of heavy trucks rumbling across the plains surrounding Elk Creek, population 98. âIf we want to give our kids a chance, weâve got to use the resources we have,â said Harold Richardson, a farmer and retired teacher from Elk Creek. China is the worldâs main producer and processor of scandium and rare earths. America has only one rare earth mine, in Mountain Pass, Calif. It sends its ore to China for processing. (Mr. Smith of NioCorp is the former chief executive of MolyCorp, which used to own the Mountain Pass mine.) Brazil is by far the worldâs biggest producer of niobium, which is used to strengthen steel. China Molybdenum, a state-backed company, bought a key niobium mine in Brazil in 2016. The importance of having a domestic stash of metals was highlighted in 2010 when China blocked exports of rare earths to Japan during a dispute over a fishing trawler incident, sending prices soaring. Since then, tensions between the United States and China only have escalated, prompting fears about politically and economically motivated supply-chain disruptions. NioCorp executives say the amount of metals they could recover at Elk Creek would be scant compared to the Chinese supply; they are still determining whether they can economically retrieve the rare earths. The company plans to dig titanium, too (China, Japan and Russia are among the worldâs biggest titanium producers), but niobium is the most abundant metal at the site, and if operations go forward, Elk Creek would be the only niobium mine in America. Company executives say they expect demand for the metal to increase for use in new versions of lithium ion electric vehicle batteries under development. NioCorp has obtained all the necessary permits to start digging. But if it digs the rare earths, NioCorp may need to look overseas for processing. A new processing facility that is in the works in Texas could take years to become operational. âIâd really want to see these activities done in the United States or an allied countryâ such as Japan or Britain, said Mr. Smith of NioCorp. New demand for greener sources of energy is fueling interest from Wall Street in the Elk Creek mine. But the messaging from NioCorp tends to focus on the metalsâ traditional uses â in oil pipelines and guided missiles, residents said. âNioCorp is being very thoughtful in how theyâre communicating with Southeast Nebraskans,â said State Senator Julie Slama, who represents constituents in Johnson County, which has voted Republican in every presidential election since the 1960s. âIn Nebraska, we have a sense of patriotism and desire to serve our country.â People have been talking about a mine in Elk Creek since the early 1970s when, according to local lore, pilots reported their instruments went haywire while flying over southeast Nebraska. The real story: University researchers received a federal grant to fly over the state with instrumentation that identified changes in the earthâs magnetic field, indicating the possible presence of certain minerals and metals. Core samples for testing were stacked in sheds on Ms. Beetheâs farm. âThe rocks are different here,â said Scott Honan, NioCorpâs chief operating officer. Back then local workers were hired to carry out exploratory drilling, digging up hundreds of core samples, tubes of earth, for testing. Stacks of them are stored in metal sheds on Beverly Beetheâs farm, where the mine would be located. Residents signed land leases with the company, which eventually bought 226 acres. Some landowners netted lucrative deals and could receive royalty payouts of as much as $10 million a year. But the deals created bad blood. Some residents who were left out were miffed. Others like Ms. Beethe question whether they got a fair deal, especially in an area where the price of farmland has recently skyrocketed. âThe way I got treated, I hope that they donât treat the community that way,â she said. Many residents also are worried about damage from the toxic chemicals used in mining and processing. They wonder about cancer cases near the mine site. Rare earth metals are found alongside radioactive elements. Mr. Smith said that at Elk Creek the amounts are so small they donât require state licensing, but he said as a precaution NioCorp plans to seek licensing anyway and will carry out required monitoring. Higher paying jobs would be welcome in the area, residents said, but still they wondered, how will the mine ever be able to find 400 workers? The nearby state prison has tried to fill vacancies by nearly doubling starting pay, to $28 an hour. Staff shortages are so severe at the local school district that the superintendent is pondering a four-day week for the next academic year. He already doubles as a bus driver because he canât fill the job. And what if the workers do come? âWhere the hell are 400 more people going to eat in this town?â said Tim Weber, who opposes the mine. Residents like Lavon Heidemann, a former lieutenant governor from Elk Creek, have benefited from the mine already. He was paid to help drill exploratory hole No. 7 back in the 1970s and now works as a local representative for NioCorp, fielding questions from his neighbors. Mr. Heidemann sometimes stares out from his hilltop farm at the blinking lights on the wind turbines several miles away. They bug him a little. He worries the nation might be transitioning too quickly to renewables. But, he said, the Elk Creek mine would be good for America. âI wish it wasnât in my backyard, but it is. Other people sacrificed, and we need to sacrifice too,â Mr. Heidemann said. âI love this country to no end. We have challenges today and if we can help make it a better place in an environmentally safe way then, hot dog, I want to be a part of that.â Dionne Searcey is part of a team that won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for international reporting and author of the book, "In Pursuit of Disobedient Women." **@**dionnesearcey ⢠Facebook AWESOME! 2023.02.02 10:05 Wide_Summer610 Keeping People Safe & Happy with Quality Electrical Enclosures Metal.
It is crucial to prevent any combustible materials, such as gases, dust, or metals, from entering your Electrical Enclosures Metal while it is being utilized in a hazardous environment and coming into touch with the electrical circuitry within. If that occurs, your cage might catch fire or, worse still, explode, endangering everyone nearby and putting everyone's safety at risk. That entails risks, inconvenience, the possibility of legal action, and higher expenses.
Ignition can be started with a very minimal quantity of energy.
All it takes for an electrical circuit to fail is a spark caused by poor wiring or a broken connection. If the correct temperature and pressure conditions are present, the majority of materials will burn. Simply put, fire is an oxidation process. While certain oxidation processes go slowly, fire is a quick oxidation process. As an illustration, steel often rusts over days, weeks, and months. However, steel will burn quickly if it is finely ground, placed in an atmosphere with just oxygen, and then subjected to high temperatures. The dust created by grain kept in a grain elevator and flour in a bakery can both accomplish the same task.
Other substances may act as oxidizers, while oxygen is often the main one in flames. When coupled with air, certain fuels can create explosive mixtures. The primary distinction between a fast fire and an explosion is that the latter produces a pressure wave as a result of the volume of hot gas being produced quickly. The "boom" in an explosion is caused by that pressure wave. Facilities and people may sustain significant harm as a result of the explosive pressure wave.
It is crucial to pressurize and purge your electrical enclosure for this reason.
Compressed instrument-quality air with just minute quantities of flammable vapor is the most typical and useful protective gas used in an electrical enclosure. Additionally suitable are inert gases like argon or nitrogen. A 0.10-inch (2.5 mm) minimum enclosure pressure is needed for most purging operations. In some cases, ignitable dust protection requires a minimum enclosure pressure of 0.50 inches (12.7 mm) of water. To achieve a suitable safety factor, a greater enclosure pressure should always be maintained. Rarely, enclosure pressures up to 2.5 inches (63.5 mm) of water may be needed to counteract abrupt atmospheric pressure changes, such as those caused by missile launchers or offshore oil drilling rigs.
- To lower the dangerous gas inside the Electrical Enclosures Metal to a safe level, enclosures must be purge-filled with compressed air or inert gas at the right flow and pressure.
- Pressurization is the process of raising the pressure of compressed air or inert gas within a container to a point where dangerous gases or flammable gas cannot enter.
- In atmospheres with combustible gases or liquid vapors, pressurization and purging are necessary. In atmospheres with ignitable metal, carbon, or organic dust just pressurization is necessary.
The typical protective gas consumption during pressurization should range from 0.1 to 3.5 scfh per cubic foot (2.83 to 99.11 l/hr) of enclosure volume at a 0.10 inch (2.5 mm) enclosure pressure. The shielded enclosure's integrity and the usual pressure setting must be met for use. Use is also influenced by the number, size, and depth of coverings, doors, and gadgets that penetrate the surface.
How to pick a pressurization or purging system.
There are five main considerations when selecting a purge/pressurization system for Electrical Enclosures Metal:
- The classification of the hazardous area (class and division) where the electrical enclosure and internal equipment are to be employed. The internal equipment's hazardous classification for Division 1 regions decides whether a Type X or Type Y system should be employed.
- Equipment rating: Depending on the Class and Division of the surrounding air as well as the intended hazardous condition inside the enclosure, the equipment rating is essential.
- The electrical enclosure's dimensions, which were utilized to calculate interior volume.
- The layout of the electrical enclosure. For instance, any external wiring to the section must be appropriate for usage in the specific hazardous environment present and all cable entrances must be sealed to NEMA Type 4 or 12.
- Power needs, namely the need for an interlock in the event of a Type X system.
Conclusion
When employing an
Electrical Enclosures Metal under risky circumstances, purging and pressurizing it is a vital requirement for safety. When placing your next order, keep that in mind. Your electrical equipment and the persons working nearby would be in danger without this crucial safety measure.

2023.02.02 09:25 KingHuzz My experience with Japanese Jiu Jitsu
This is a long one so sorry in advance.
So I thought Iâd share my experience as someone who trains BJJ (Blue Belt) and some mma, training in a more traditional Japanese jiu jitsu gym for around 8 months.
It was a very interesting experience, and while I have some issues with the gym, I did really enjoy my experience there.
The first thing that took a bit of getting used to was the formalities. I had done things such as bowing when going on and off mats at my old gym, but here they took it to a whole new level. Very formal, deliberate, and in tandem with each other. With a few extra steps. The coach was called âSenseiâ and the head coach was called âShihanâ. The formalities were interesting but I got used to them okay.
Another part of the experience was of course the training. Overall there wasnât too much difference in the start, youâd do your warmup, get shown a technique and drill it. The most obvious difference was how little we did any sparring after. This was a very gruelling difference as I came from a place that did a lot of sparring. The sparring itself wasnât anywhere near as intense either and the students there struggled to spar with what they learned when under pressure. The students couldnât really keep up with me or my brother who had also came to the gym. Despite the lack of sparring, they did discuss the intricacies of the techniques really well which I liked. Sparring with the sensei was really fun though.
Now, when it came to the techniques, one big thing they pushed was that it was street oriented. Not meant for competition. Overall they taught a lot of basics that had never been highlighted before, though because of my background I picked up quickly. There were things like dangerous points, positions for taking people off balance, etc. I really liked knife defence since I had no background in weapons. The others weapon stuff was cool too but some felt like fluff. A big part of these techniques was that when you demonstrated them, you had to also demonstrate things to âsoften upâ, the person you were demonstrating it on. This included hits to the groin, neck, etc, before youâd do the techniques. They also had realistic defence theory against multiple opponents. They also did not perpetuate the idea that their martial art could defeat multiple people easily, just that they could help you get away.
I didnât like a lot of their techniques because they didnât seem like they would work when resisted or work on a trained fighter. Many of their techniques didnât work when demonstrated on me or my brother because of the conditioning we had gone through. A few times they would just say it would work on people who were untrained which I could believe for a decent amount of them. A lot of their grappling was somewhat poor too. I would frequently see holes in the techniques and even showed them how to escape one of their ground holds in seconds as opposed to their original method. At times I felt like the theory in terms of the damage they would do wasnât accurate either, that they overestimated how much damage it would do. In general I think there was too much theory.
Despite that, some of the techniques were very useful. I was even able to apply a variation of my old gyms techniques with some of the new things to decent success. As I said earlier, the fresh perspective was very nice. It did well to highlight the holes in some of my own techniques and the like too.
I got along very well too with the people. The Sensei was very nice and was great to talk martial arts with. The students were fun to talk to as-well. The Shihan wasnât around often because he was getting very old but he had some good insights. There were other martial arts at the gym too such as Taekwondo so talking to them was nice as-well.
Iâm going back to my old gym now, as this was always planned to be a temporary thing to get a change of pace/perspective.
Keep in mind this comes from someone who has his own preferences for their training and is of course biased to like and dislike certain things. I do recommend that if you are interested in the martial art, you go ahead and learn it. It was a very fun experience and trying it was very much worth it.
Iâm sure Iâve left stuff out so feel free to ask and Iâll do my best to reply.
Edit: forgot to mention kata. I had never done kata before and honestly really wasnât a fan. I think it is useful to an extent but wasnât my thing

2023.02.02 09:21 Sporadic_passions A Deathworlders Ambition [Chapter 13]
Chapter 13
Log: Alex
I never knew something as common as someone breathing could be so comforting. The gentle rising and falling of her chest was the only thing that let me know she was alive. Arora had reminded unconscious for a concerning amount of time. Both the droid and Throt said that she would be fine but seeing her so still and lifeless in contrast to her normally overly excited self was an uncomfortable sight to say the least.
Hours passed by slowly one after the other each feeling longer than the last. Everyone stopped by at one point or another, dropping off some food and just checking on Arora's condition. I only left her side a few times to check on Uvo. Luckily When he finally sprung to life I was by his side. He looked as panicked and worried as I felt, though it seems I was able to put his mind at ease.
Shortly after he woke up I could tell something was going through his head. My theory was confirmed when he asked me for a favor. He asked that I continue to keep an eye on Arora even after she wakes up, though his reason was cryptic I accepted the mission. Uvo doesn't make requests very often, especially regarding someone else watching over his sister so to say I was a little concerned would be an understatement. Though more concerning than that was the question he asked right as I was about to leave
âOh one last thing before you goâ
âAnother request I presumeâ
âNo, Im wondering who you were talking to when you were buried?â
That single question sent a shiver through my who system. Back in the mine, I didn't even think whether or not I was talking aloud let alone if anyone heard me. I quickly regained my composure before the last person I wanted to hear decided to join in the conversation.
âLooks like the cats out of the bag⌠a surprise to be sure but a welcome oneâ the bastard could hardly contain his amusement at the situation
I can still salvage this situation⌠maybe
âGive it up, you know no matter what you say, eventually you won't have a choice but to tell them about me. This is the second time this week that you slipped up. You better tell them about me because it's only a matter of time before I can tell them about meâ
I could feel him fade into the back of my mind as I quickly put on a blank nonchalant expression. There are few things I hate more than when I know that bastard is right. I may have only known Uvo for a little while but it's no secret he is observant and clever. Even if Arora never knows the moment he finds out he will tell her. She seemed ok with my past or at least accepting of it but this vile thing is still a part of me, I don't think even her kindness would extend past that discovery. I know ill have to tell Uvo about him later but for now, perhaps I can buy some time.
âI uhâŚI was just mumbling to myself, humans sometimes do that as a self-inspired pep talk to make us push ourselves. Ya that's probably what you heardâ
âHuh I guess that makes senseâ
I could tell he didn't believe me but he seemed content with that answer for now at least. Not wanting to press my luck any further I reassured him I would keep an eye on Arora before quickly making my way out of the room. As I walked back into Arora's room I nearly ran right into Throt as he was leaving.
âOops, sorry Throt. Didn't see you thereâ
âItâs⌠it's alright Alex. I was... Just leavingâ
âOh actually while youâre here can I ask a favor?â
He didn't respond, he just turned to look at me, slightly shaking at any movement I made. It was clear that even though we had spent quite some time together the events from that day were still seared into his memory
âCan you bring Uvo his communicator, it should be in our room. When he wakes up again tell him that I'll be using Aroras to keep him updated on the mission. He should be up in an hour so please hurryâ
Throat seemed confused but relaxed when he heard that Uvo would be waking up soon. He gave me a nod before almost sprinting down the hall toward the rooms. Whether that was to get away from me as fast as possible or because he was excited to drill into Uvo when he woke up I'll never know.
The room was as empty as I left it though there were signs that quite a few people had come and gone in my absence. Some flowers, a fresh plate of food, chars that had been moved around, and so on. I took a seat next to her and settled in for the long road to recovery that lay before her.
I must have drifted off to sleep, the memories of the mines flowed through my mind. I walked through each step a hundred times. observing and learning so that if something like this were to happen again I would know how to react to prevent any harm from reaching my friends. I don't know how long I was trapped in that loop. Could have been a few minutes, could have been a couple of hours but what finally snapped me out of it was the sound of a familiar voice weakly piercing through the silence.
âUug⌠what time is itâ
I jolted awake, my eyes filled with relief as I spotted Arora now laying semi-awake next to me. I quickly blinked to prevent the relief from escaping my eyes but I wasn't fast enough to stop my body from wrapping her in a hug.
âWell I guess there are worse things to wake up toâ she joked
I quickly recomposed myself, releasing my grip and allowing her to lay back in bed she looked back at me a little exasperated at the sudden display of affection.
âAhem.. im glad your awake. You had me worriedâ
She gave me a smile before looking around the room âunless the afterlife looks like a med bay Im going to assume you saved my life⌠againâ
âWell⌠more or lessâ I shyly admitted, gesturing to her arm
She slightly winced noticing the large amount of thick milky white bandages hung from a red and black cloth sling. Though even seeing her injuries she didn't seem disheartened about her current situation, she still seemed for a lack of a better word⌠happy. Though one thing did weigh heavily on my mind.
âHay Arora⌠do you remember anything before you woke?â
She looked at me skeptically before closing her eyes in an attempt to bring back her memories
âWell I do remember us being down in the mines, then a large rumble, and then being thrown to the floor before the whole world went darkâ she rubbed the back of her head with the one good arm she had.
I let out a silent sigh of relief, I was worried that if Uvo had heard my little conversation from outside the rubble what might she have heard. I didn't get very far into my celebration before my little illusion of safety was thoroughly smashed.
âI must have hit my head hard when you tossed me because the only other thing I remember was drifting in and out of consciousness with you mumbling angrily to yourself, though some of what you were saying didn't make much senseâ
Crap so she did hear me as well. On the bright side though it looks like she doesn't realize I was talking to something else rather than just to myself. Deciding to get her off-topic I asked to borrow her communicator for a bit, she nodded before telling me that she had left it back in her bag giving me an excuse to dart out of the room for a bit.
I found the device with little difficulty but I took a bit of time to get back. I needed to come up with some excuses for any questions she might ask if the topic about my mysterious conversation should arise again. After Standing at the med door for a few minutes running through some of the good ones I had come up with I finally made my way back inside. As soon as I walked in I nearly tackled Arora as I watched her trying to escape the confines of her bed
âWhat do you think your doingâ
âGoing to stretch my legs, could you give me a hand getting off the bed?â
âYa⌠no. Uvo would kill me if I let you just wander around the station alone not even an hour after you woke upâ
âI find it funny that both of you have the Gaul to tell me that after some of the BS, you two have tried to walk off. Well now it's my turn, but I'll let you accompany me if it puts your mind at easeâ
âSigh⌠fine but you're not walking anywhere, ill grab you a wheelchairâ
âSounds good to me. I won't complain about someone caring me around like royaltyâ
Loud conversation and laughter cascaded throughout the mess hall. The sounds mixed with the scent of lunch gave the room an inviting feeling. Guessing Arora was probably hungry we quickly did a lap around the housing and mess hall areas of the ship before I managed to convince her to get something to eat.
By the time we finally made it to the mess hall, it was almost empty with only a few people still lingering. I recognized one such person as our host. he must have recognized us too because as soon as our eyes locked he nearly jumped out of his seat as he made his way over to us.
âHello⌠Alex? Am I saying that right?â
I was a little shocked, that wasn't my translator at work, Roj actually said my name⌠in English. When I finally processed his question I quickly nodded much to his relief
âOh good. Glad to see even after all this time I can still speak at least a little bit of humanâ
âCan I ask where you learned English? I thought there weren't many humans or human books out here for you to learn fromâ
âWell you see I once had the distinct pleasure of meeting a small traveling group of humansâ
âHow long ago was that?â
âNot long after I retired from the military about 22 years agoâ
âWait 22 years?! But humans hadn't started exploring deep space till 12 years ago. How could you have possibly met any of my kind 10 years before we were even out here?â
He paused for a second, stroking his chin as he started his tale
âThey never told me how they got to space but my theory is that long before the humans made themselves known a group of researchers kidnaped them thinking they would be just another lab rat, unfortunately, it used to be a pretty common practice. Unfortunately for the researchers, the humans didnt like the idea of spending their days being tested on so I assume they killed the crew and used the ship to travel through the starsâ
Ya I could see that
âWhy do you think that's what happened?â
âWell, their ship was a scientific vessel that was splashed to all hell. Even though I was responding to their distress beacon, when we first ran into each other they looked rather⌠unpleased to see me. Though when I finally gained their trust the trip back to the nearest station was rather amusingâ
âAnd im guessing they taught you Englishâ
âYes though we didnt have enough time together for proper lesions, I wasn't even able to learn their names during our trip. Speaking of which, when we finally made it to the station that was the first and only time I got to see firsthand the power of a deathworlderâ
I looked at him confused as his face morphed into a sickening grin. After letting me stew for a few seconds with my questions he began again
âWhen we arrived we learned that the station was a trapped ship used by a small pirate group. It's a common tactic to lure in unsuspecting cargo ships, but when youâre deep in space people can get pretty desperate and overlook some red flags. We tried to keep them out of the ship for as long as we could but eventually, they broke through the bay doors. They must have thought the humans were pets of mine so they only bothered to restrain me and simply disregarded the humans entirely. they started tearing my ship apart, probably for scrap. I tried to tell the humans to hide and how much trouble we were in, I don't think they realized just what was happening till one of the bastards put a plasma pistol to my head. It was at that moment I noticed the human's whole demeanor change. After that let's just say they learned why Humans don't make good petsâ
I was still having a hard time believing that humans had been in deep space for longer than even most humans thought though Arora didnt seem to impress at the tail, probably recalling similar experiences with me.
âAnyways after the bloodbath, I took a page out of the human's book and commandeered the station for myself. The more I looked around the station the more I was confused, everything looked⌠strange. The only pieces that felt familiar were obviously added to the place at a later time while the original structure was odd. Though at least one of the humans seemed pretty excited about it, hopping around and checking out all the interesting parts that I couldn't make heads or tails of. Later I found out that the station was an old earthling space station that was thought to be lost after being blown off course many years ago. After a bit of work, I managed to repurpose the station into the mining outpost you stand on todayâ
âI thought this place had a familiar design. What happened to the other humans?â
âI helped them fix up one of the less damaged ships that were docked here, customizing it so they could fly it with ease. After it was finished we said our goodbyes and I never saw them again, although they did give me these as a parting giftâ
He took the pair of aviators out of his pocket and placed them on the table in front of me. He held out his hand, gesturing for me to try it on and I happily obliged. They fit like a glove, the cold metal weighing just enough to let me know they were there without feeling in the way. I looked over at Arora, her eyes seemed to sparkle at my new look
âHow do I look?â
âSo cool. You look like a movie starâ
Now it was my turn to have a laugh. Though they did make me feel like johny cage I doubt they would magically make me an action star or a kung-fu master
âWait you have movies on Aeriaâ
âOf course, ill have to show you sometime. You look just like one of the famous actors back homeâ
I took off the glasses and handed them back to Roj. As soon he tucked them back into his pocket I felt a little longing for a pair of my own. I watched as the man scanned the now-empty mess hall
âIt's thanks to those 4 that I even considered going into business for myself. After watching them fly off into the vast expanse I had a sudden longing to see what was out there. So after some brainstorming, I repurposed this old station, invited my closes friend, and set off on the journey of a lifetime with no destination in mindâ
He grabbed a small scrap of paper out of his other pocket before unfolding it
âLooking back I do have a lot to be thankful for. If it wasn't for Cellis I doubt that this place would have gotten off the ground, he has always been better at logistics. Though the siblings may think I saved them, in reality, they saved me, I don't know how much longer I could have survived off of Cellis awful cooking and he was way too overbearing with anything to do with explosivesâ
He let out a deep sigh as he stuffed the scrap of paper back into his pocket
âAlas the best days may be behind me, with that tunnel now closed off and us unable to clear it I don't think we will be able to fill any more orders after yours for quite some time. Normally that wouldn't be a problem but we don't have the budget to survive till we find another profitable mineâ
I guess we weren't the only ones affected by the collapse of that tunnel.
âWhat if we cleared it for you?â Arora piped up out of the blue
Roj perked up at this comment and I nearly slapped her upside the head. What was she thinking? Even in tip-top shape, it would take her hours to clear that tunnel and there was no way in hell I would let her go with her arm in a sling
âI⌠I appreciate the offer. But I can't in good conscience ask you to do that while you're still recoveringâ
âWell then⌠Alex looks like it's up to youâ
âMe?! So now youâre just volunteering me for stuff?â
âWhat's the matter? You don't think you can do it?â
âWe both know I could but I have been asked to keep an eye on youâ
âWho told you to⌠never mind I know who did. Fine tell you what, you clear the tunnel and I'll hang out back in the med bayâ
âAnd how do I know you won't get into any more trouble?â
âI'll keep an eye on her. It's the least I could do in exchange for you helping me outâ
âPerfect, well Alex⌠looks like you have some work to do. We will get out of your hairâ
Before I could say my two senses arora was already pushing herself off back towards the med bay with Roj close behind her a moment later. I hadn't even finished processing what just happened before I realized the two were already too far gone to hear my protests, the last thing I could hear was Arora laughing before asking Roj if he had any good stores from his time in the military
About half an hour later I was in a very tight suit, moving large boulders in the cold vacuum of space. The way I saw it the sooner I finished this task the sooner I could continue to keep an eye on her. I did remember to send him a quick update before I started to let him know that Roj was watching her
Honestly, I was surprised at how little effort it took to clear the dam thing especially because I remember how heavy it felt when I was trapped under it. I flung one after another hap hazardly around me, expecting them to just clank to the floor in messy piles. Instead, when I turned around I was greeted by the sight of hunters of different-sized rocks floating around.
Not questioning the small asteroid field that now filled the cavern I got back to work, thanks to the change in gravity the work flew by quickly, and a little more than an hour later I broke through to another small cavern. The walls lightened with glowing yellow strips of rock and small spots of silver dotted all around the room, looking kind of out of place.
Dam this place is beautiful. I should definitely bring Zeno down here before we leave, Im sure Roj won't mind. I should clean up this rubble first though, it will be more impressive if you don't have a bunch of grey rocks floating about.
Grabbing a few handfuls of rubble I started pressing them together till they fused together like clay. I continued to add to the evergrowing boulder till it had grown large enough for me to shove into the now very open ceiling of the tunnel. Repeating this process a few more times I had almost filled in half the missing ceiling, every once in a while a small sharp scrap of silver dug into my hand.
I had just started making the next pile when I noticed a small yellow stone floating near one of the walls. Letting my current mold float away I snatched the alluring gem. I observed the yellow stone that now sat neatly in the center of my palm. It didnt appear to be natural, the cuts that shaped it into a rough triangle were too precise to be naturally occurring and it didnt have the same glow as the stripes along the wall. Figuring it could be valuable I placed it on a makeshift ledge near the exit of the tunnel before getting back to work.
Log: Uvo
The Dyamore just stood in place, his red eye peering into my soul. Slowly he approached me, never once breaking his hypnotic gaze. Before I knew it the man was towering over me, his horns reflected the small amount of light from my device. I couldn't move, I couldn't speak, it took everything I had just to stop myself from shaking. Without uttering so much as a single sound the figure reached down and grabbed the fragile cylinder from my hand, only then did he take his eyes off me to study the object.
âThis does not belong hereâ his voice lacked any emotion âwhat are you doing here? This place has been sealed off for a reasonâ
I couldn't muster a single word for fear of losing my voice. Leaning down once more he gently held the device between two of his claws, hovering it right in front of my eyes.
âWhere did you get this?â
Taking in a few silent breathes I stole myself and finally spoke, trying to match his emotionless tone
I gestured around the room âThe pieces were scattered all around, I just put them back together. what is it?â
âThis shouldn't be here, only Nora should have thisâ
He quickly turned, nearly slapping me with his tail as he made his way out of the charred room. Seeing this as an opportunity to finally get some answers I quickly followed him. all the workspaces were relatively close to each other so we didnt walk too far from the wreckage. Just as he made his way through the glass door I could hear him mumble something to himself, he sounded frustrated.
âNora, can you take a look at thisâ
The desk near the back wall suddenly jolted up with a thud as someone let out a pained groan. A second later Nora crawled out from under the desk holding her head
âLux⌠how many times do I have to tell you not to just barge in hereâ
âApologies, now quickly take a look⌠pleaseâ
She eyed him annoyedly but obliged his request. She took the fragile tube from his hands and placed it on her desk.
âJust looks like a shattered explosive charge, the same stuff we use for clearing tunnels. Im guessing you found this in the tunnels? You should know what it is on your own so why did you need me?â
âWasnt found in the tunnelâ he muttered before quickly turning and rushing back out the door.
That simple fraze must have spooked her because her orange skin seemed to turn pale white. I managed to catch up to Lux, however, he did not seem to appreciate my presence because he gave me a nasty glare before sprinting off back toward the rooms. It didnt look like he would be answering any of my questions any time soon.
Feeling a little disappointed I pulled out my communicator to try and get a status update from Alex. the screen displayed 2 messages that had been sent to me quite some time to go. They were from Alex, the first one said that Arora was now awake and the more recent message said that Roj was keeping an eye on Arora after she volunteered him to clear the mine. It was a little upsetting that Alex wasn't the one by her side but I was just happy that she was finally awake.
Knowing that I hit a roadblock I decided to check in on Arora till I figured out my next step. As I approached the door to the med bay I could hear the sounds of laughter and excitement.
âCellis that old fool, I remember one time while we were walking around town he thought he saw the glint of a rifle from a nearby building and tackled me to the ground, a second later we discovered that it was just an empty bottle reflecting the sun. he didnt hear the end of that for weeksâ
âHa ha, that sounds like something Uvo would doâ
Roj whipped the tear from his eye that came from laughing at his own story before calming down
âHe may be an overprotective jack ass but he has saved my life on more than one occasion and I wouldn't trade his friendship for all the wealth in the galaxyâ
âAm I interrupting somethingâ
âUvo! Where have you been? I thought you would be the first face I saw when I woke up not Alex, though Im not complainingâ
âSorry⌠I had something I needed to take care ofâ trying to switch the topic I started questioning her âI heard you volunteered Alex to clear the mines, how happy was he about that?â
âDidnt give him a chance to protestâ she laughed âhe should be done soon though, I imagen that it wouldn't take someone like him that long to move a few dozen rocks. So what was so important that you just had to investigate?â
âDon't worry about it. My investigation hit a dead end after Lux ran offâ
âLux? What spooked him?â
âI may or may not have been poking around the ruined repair shop where I possibly found several shards that put together formed the shell of a used demo charge. After that, he ran off to who knows whereâ
âWait you found what in the repair shop?â
âA demo charge, Nora confirmed what it was and now has it in her officeâ
âBut why wouldâŚâ something seemed to click in his head âcome with meâ
âHay what about me?â
âStay here sis, you said it yourself Alex should be back soon, and im sure he has some words for youâ
As the door closed behind me I could hear her shouts of protest, yelling about how unfair that was and to spare her from that torment. Roj led me to a smaller room close to the wall that separated the lodging and work areas. Inside was a small desk with a set of double monitors. Roj took a seat behind the desk and clicked a few buttons on his keyboard before calling me over.
âWhat are you doing?â
âIm pulling up the logs to see who the last person to enter the shop wasâ
âCan't you just pull up camera footage?â
âWe don't have any around the station. Were the only ones here long-term so I never saw the needâ
The device made a ding before displaying a picture of Lux, his info, and the timestamp of the last entry to the shop. After giving me a look he pressed a few more keys before, the device made another ding this time displaying Celis and his timestamp of the mining elevator. Roj scold back to the previous picture, and once again Lux appeared on the screen. Now with a look of concern, Roj pulled out a book filled with a list of dates and times. He entered one after another and each time Luxâs red eyes peered at us through the display. We didnt say a word, we both knew what it meant. He powered off his computer and we both left the room, rage starting to fule my every step.
Log: Alex
It had taken some time but soon I had finished cleaning up the tunnel. I can't even begin to express how happy I was to get out of that suit and how desperately I needed a shower after all that labor. As I made my way back up to the station my mind flooded with all the profanities and Ideas for revenge against Arora. The only thing that distracted me from my plotting was the strange gem I had found. I pulled it out f my pocket and began studying it closely. The thinnest parts of the gem were chipped but shown as bright as the sun, whether it was valuable or not it was still a cool rock.
Finally, I made it back to the main floor. The elevator doors opened to reveal the lounge of the central structure. The only thing out of place was the sounds of shouting originating from somewhere deeper in the station. Circling the elevator and heading back to the rooms I finally spotted a large crowd of people gathered around a tall dragon-looking creature. Approaching the angry mob I spotted Arora on the outskirts looking very concerned at the crowd
âWhat's going on?â
âI.. Im not sure. Uvo and Roj are in the middle of this mess talking with that daymore. Something about sabotaging the stationâ
I pushed through the crowd to get a better handle on the situation. Sure enough, the Celean and Rall were dead center of the mob, yelling at the overgrown lizard as an Ashen stood between the two groups. Well, Uvo was yelling, Roj just looked pissed.
âWoah buddy, what's going on here?â
âWe have found evidence that Lux may be behind the destruction of the repair station. If that's true then he could also be behind the tunnel collapse that nearly killed Aroraâ
The Ashen spoke up âthose are quite some allegations, what's your proof?â
âWe have time stamps of his card being used right before both the shop explosion and before the tunnel collapse. We both know Lux had no reason to be on the asteroid, that combined with a mountain of coincidences where his card was used right before multiple things of cargo and supplies went missing, I have no choice but to detain Lux and launch an investigationâ
âThat⌠that seems reasonable. Im sure this can all be explained away given some timeâ Cellis tried to reassure lux but the flameless charmeleon wasn't having it.
âBut I didnt do anything. I reported my card missing months ago. How could I have used it If I don't have it?â
âI never received such a claimâ
âYou should have. I handed it toâŚâ
âLux just calm down. Im sure this is just a miss understanding that will be cleared up in no time. But you yelling at Roj is freaking out the crew. Just go with them for now and I promise this will be resolved soonâ
Lux seemed to calm down but he still look upset at the situation he was in. Roj approached him and started to guide him away from the crowd. I grabbed Uvo before he could escape
âClearly I missed something. What the hell just happened?â
âI was looking into the strange things that were happening around the station after figuring something was fishy about the whole tunnel collapse. I ended up searching the ruins of the repair shop and finding a bunch of small metal slivers scattered around the area that turned out to be the remains of a demo charge. That led me to talk to Roj and that led Roj to check the records and here we areâ
âHay I think I found something similar back in the mine. After clearing out the tunnel I came across a small cavern filled with yellow strips of stone and a bunch of metal splinters lining the walls. Also, I found this beautiful gem down there so it wasn't all badâ
I pulled out the small triangle and presented it to Uvo. he eyed it intensely before his eyes widened, reflecting the yellow stone in his eyes. He gently grabbed it from my hand before clenching it tightly in his fist
âHay Cellis, can I see youâre medallion real quick? I know it's a bad time but I wanted to show it off to Alexâ
He eyed Uvo suspiciously but after a quick glance around he quickly obliged the request. Handing the bejeweled medal to the Celean, Uvo quickly took it, taking the gem I found and trying to make it fit in one of the empty sockets. It was a perfect fit

2023.02.02 00:39 SupermarketAntique90 Acro to T1/T2 adapter
Basically I want to take a mount that is cut for an Acro and have an interfacing mount that uses that dovetail geometry on the bottom, but a T1/T2 mount on top... Looking at the dimensions it would make for a SUPER compact T1 mount and would add a lot of flexibility in the ability to 12 o'clock and 45 offset a red dot on a rifle.... Any idea if it exists? I guess technically a Holosun 509T pattern would work too but I figured that'd be less common.

2023.02.02 00:09 NotApplicableMC How I made a 620sq inch cage from IKEA Platsa!
| Hi everyone, I am very excited to announce I was finally able to upgrade my cage to 620in 2 (76cm x 53cm) for around ÂŁ130 / $160. ( ÂŁ96 / $118 for the bare minimum stuff). I made the cage together with my SO using an IKEA Platsa frame, Utrusta glass shelf, and a Hjalpa wood shelf. (Although I made it with my SO the project is largely a one-person job aside from some tricky bits like fitting the lid). Here's the finished result! DIY IKEA Platsa cage. Internal measurement 76x53cm. External measurement 80x55cm. 620sq inches of floorspace. Please ignore the short bedding depth I forgot to order some more, lol. I usually have 7 - 10 inches. This cage can support 11 inches. â
Features â
- The floorspace is ideal for 3 mice, 4 mice at a squeeze (it is technically around 50 gallons so 4 would be okay).
- The height is 60cm, so lots of room for hanging toys
- Pan depth of 28cm, perfect for piling up your bedding up to 11 inches!
- The Platsa is lined with paper foil that is easy to wipe clean
- Angled door for good accessibility & visibility of your mice, and a stylish look similar to the Niteangel Vista cage.
- The build is easy to moderate difficulty and only requires 2 power tools* (you can rent from hardware stores)
- This cage is completely flat-packable! Because it is made out of an IKEA Platsa it is simple to take apart if you need to move it (I am going to move house soon so this feature is very nifty).
\More power tools makes the build easier & quicker, but at the very least you need a drill and a jigsaw) đ˛ Price đ˛ Total (including quality of life features) = ÂŁ130 / $160 Total bare minimum cost = ÂŁ96 / $118 đ Shopping List đ - 1x IKEA Platsa frame 80x55x60cm (ÂŁ40)
- 1x IKEA Utrusta glass shelf 80x37cm (comes as a 2 pack) (ÂŁ19)
- 1x IKEA Hjalpa shelf 80x55cm (ÂŁ10) OR\* 1x IKEA Utrusta wood shelf 80x37cm (comes as a 2 pack) (ÂŁ13)
- 2x hinges (ÂŁ3)
- 4x large corner brackets ~40x40mm (ÂŁ6)
- 1x pack of self-adhesive bumpers ~10mm (ÂŁ1.60)
- solid pine stripwood ~2m L x 34mm W x 18mm T (ÂŁ10)
- metal mesh 1cm squares 60x90cm (ÂŁ6.50)
- 12x screws 25mm (<ÂŁ1)
- (optional) 4x wheels (ÂŁ5 each)
- (optional) 4x small corner brackets ~30x30mm (ÂŁ5)
- (optional) various offcuts (free)
- (optional) bolts for the wheels (30mm L) (~ÂŁ8)
- (optional) small cup hooks 20mm (ÂŁ3 for 10)
*Get the Utrusta shelf to reduce the amount of sawing you need to do. Downside is you have a spare shelf that is not needed, or you have leftover Platsa that is not needed if you use the other shelf as the back. đ ď¸ Equipment needed đ ď¸ - Drill + drill bits in various sizes
- Circular saw or Jigsaw (or plasterboard saw if you don't have power tools)
- Staple gun
- Set square
- Mitre saw (or mitre box if not using power tools)
đ Instructions đ If you decided to get the Utrusta wood shelf instead of the Hjalpa shelf, look out for this symbol 'đ ' for alternative instructions. âď¸ Step 1: Build the Platsa frame (no power tools required). Discard the original back piece because it is flimsy and the mice could squeeze out (see Fig 1 below). We will use some leftover wood to make the back. Fig 1 You can also attach wheels at this stage. Fig 2 âď¸ Step 2: Cut two wooden blocks from your stripwood (or offcuts) and screw these to the bottom two corners at the front of the Platsa frame. These will help to hold the glass in. (Please disregard the upper two blocks in Fig 3 below, we later replaced them with angled blocks). âď¸ Step 3: Stick an adhesive bumper on each of your large corner brackets, and screw these on the outside of the frame in 4 places for each corner of the Utrusta glass. Carefully slide the glass in before tightening the brackets. Fig 3 âď¸ Step 4: Remove the top side of the Platsa frame (it should pop out easily). Cut the wood length-ways into two pieces so one is 28cm wide and the other is 25cm wide. The narrow piece will be the top. Keep the wider piece as it will be used as the back later. Refer to Fig 4 for which piece is which, it's important. Fig 4 âď¸ Step 5: Cut 2 blocks and screw these to the sides of the frame so the top can rest on them. Fit the top piece of the Platsa back in. âď¸ Step 6: Saw the Hjalpa shelf length-ways at 37cm (this width creates a slight overhang so you can lift the lid, you can reduce or increase this overhang to your preference). đ If you got the Utrusta wood shelf instead of the Hjalpa, you can skip this step as it is already 37cm wide. âď¸ Step 7: This is the trickiest part. You need to cut an angle of 40° into the Hjalpa so the lid can close properly. The easiest way is to draw a line 2cm from the sawn edge on the underside of the Hjalpa. Saw through the first layer of solid wood to create an angle (the fibreboard inside can be easily squished down or cut). So the width of the top side of the shelf is 37cm, and the bottom side is 35cm. Fig 5 âď¸ Step 8: Line up the Hjalpa shelf with the top of the Platsa frame and rest the other end on the glass. Take a pencil and draw a line on the side of the Platsa all the way down the width of the Hjalpa (refer to dotted line in Fig 6). This line should be roughly 40° if you have followed all the other measurements thus far. Fig 6 (the blocks appear to not line up but this is because of the angle of the photo. In real life the blocks are parallel with the dotted line/pencil line). âď¸ Step 9: From your stripwood cut 4 blocks that are angled at the same angle as the pencil line you drew (~40°). Screw two to each side of the frame, making sure they're parallel with the pencil line (refer to Fig 6). These blocks will be used to rest the lid on to reduce risk of damaging the glass and to support the weight of the lid. The block nearest the glass should be positioned 0.5cm above the glass (22.5cm from the top of the Platsa frame) so the lid has some clearance from the glass (to reduce risk of damage to the glass). Fig 7 âď¸ Step 10: Cut out the middle of the Hjalpa shelf, 3 inches in from the long edges and 2 inches in from the short edges (you can adjust these widths slightly to your preference). We decided to cover the exposed fibreboard with duct tape (you can easily paint it or use skirting board). Regardless, don't worry about it because the mesh will be stapled to the inside so the mice will not be able to access it - covering it is purely for aesthetics. Fig 8 âď¸ Step 11: Attach the leftover piece of Platsa to the back. Rotate it upside down so the exposed fibreboard is facing the floor. We used small corner brackets so the cage is easy to flatpack later, but you can just use screws. đ If you got the Utrusta wood shelf instead of the Hjalpa, you can use the other shelf as the back piece. âď¸ Step 12: Attach your mesh to the back. We first constructed a frame using the stripwood and attached this with brackets to make it easier to flatpack later (two pieces 32cm long and one piece 76cm long, with angles cut at 45°). This detail is optional as you can just staple the mesh directly onto the back of the Platsa. Fig 9 âď¸ Step 13: Staple mesh to the inside of the Hjalpa shelf, and the cage is now ready to use! Fig 10 âď¸ Optional Step 14: Attach cup hooks to the lid and sides so you can hang up toys & ropes. You can also attach hook & eyes to the outside to keep the lid open. If you want to do a bioactive setup you will need to silicone all the edges, the glass, and the pre-drilled shelving holes. Use 100% silicone with no additives. How does this cage compare to commercial wood cages of similar size? Wire enclosures are generally cheaper than wooden enclosures, so if you are looking for a cheap cage just go for a wire cage. If a tank style or wooden enclosure is what you want, then this is DIY build is ideal and works out cheaper than most commercial wooden cages of the same size. - The Niteangel Vista (small) is 565sq inches and retails at $200 (ÂŁ160).
- The Niteangel Bigger World (small) is 520sq inches and retails at $170 (ÂŁ138), the medium version measuring 776sq inches retails at $200 (ÂŁ162).
- The LaOla Nagarium is 775sq inches and retails at âŹ230 ($252 / ÂŁ203)
- The Skyline Marrakesh is 630sq inches and retails at $195.59 (ÂŁ159)
- The Pawhut Wooden Hamster cage is 1070sq inches and retails at $90.45 (cheapest I could find was ÂŁ99 though which is $122). This cage is infamous for being a poor provider of deep bedding without modifications though, and needs to be painted to keep the wood hygienic, so the cheaper price isn't really worth it IMO.
Cons of this DIY build: - You have a spare glass Utrusta shelf that is not needed.
- You have some leftover wood in the form of parts of the Hjalpa, and the original back of the Platsa. These can be repurposed as platforms though.
- The wood is a bit thin with fibreboard in between, so like all wooden cages you will need to check it regularly for chewing. However as the wood is smooth & slippery, the risk of chewing is small. The exposed bit of fibreboard where the top & lid meet is covered when the lid is closed, so the mice shouldn't be able to chew it. It's pretty easily fixed by adding some skirting board anyway.
- The Linnmon & Detolf are cheaper for more space, but this build is ideal if you don't have enough space for the aforementioned cages.
All in all I am very happy with how this DIY cage turned out, no complaints from my mice either! Let me know what you think :D submitted by NotApplicableMC to PetMice [link] [comments] |
2023.02.01 23:05 Discgolfjerk CHMM Fail and Advice
So I just took my first attempt at the CHMM exam (remotely proctored) and did worse than I thought I was going to. I utilized Mometric Test Prep and the Bowen EHS Premium Membership (exams, quizzes, and test bank). Studied every day for over 2 months and have 10 years of experience mainly in the EH&S field (very little DOT/Waste). On both exam preps, I was scoring ~85 percent making me feel confident.
With that said, the questions on the actual exam compared to the test prep were incredibly different and the focus of the prep was just really...off. There was not a single question about the HAZ Mat segregation table (even though it took up half of your screen for the whole test..) and only one mathematical question out of the 140 questions. Also, I am not even sure how you could do any calculations with the provided simple calculator and "scratch pad" space through the Kryterion proctoring site. The questions were much more involved and went deeper than the superficial examples in the test prep as well. Many of the questions were also pretty tricky with similar correct answers. Overall, I thought the test was very extremely waste-focused, ISO, regulation, and DOT focused. Totally understand that is what this test is designed for but the lack of other topics that were stressed in the prep content was just not there.
Moving forward, has anyone taken the Bowen EHS online review? I am hesitant based on the already provided content I used and the price ($1400). The course starts in a week and I would like to start asap if it's worth it. They say a 75% pass rate but would like others' opinions on the content they offer. I am also open to other materials people on here used to pass. TIA!

A gorgeous 2013 Modern with a Mahogany neck and body! No expense was spared on making an incredible feeling and sounding instrument.
The Modern is incredibly comfortable, with arm, hand, and tummy cuts. Genuine mahogany body with a 3D flamed maple top, the LP recipe. Beautiful grain patterns on the front and back. The scraped binding is a beautiful compliment to the Fireburst finish. The oil finished mahogany neck has the Modern Elliptical profile. Indian rosewood fretboard with real MOP dots. Weighs around 7lbs 9oz.
24 jumbo stainless steel frets make bends silky smooth. A 10â-14â compound radius makes chords and single notes effortless. A recessed Gotoh 510 bridge paired with the Suhr locking tuners keeps tuning perfectly stable no matter what tremolo heroics you throw at it. The SSV in the neck position and SSH+ in the bridge have a 5 way switch for versatility. Incredible strat sounds alongside some fire breathing!
Excellent condition. Has the original G+G hardshell case with spec sheet, Allen keys, tremolo bar.
Wear: - ~5mm nick back of neck around 8th fret, can feel if rubbing over but not when playing
- 3mm nick on top/binding, base of treble side horn

2023.02.01 19:21 Royal_Struggle_4650 how to deal with a noisy renovation next door?
I'm a tenant and my landlords not very responsive. My next door neighbor has been renovating his apartment for the past 2 months already. This past week, its gotten so noisy I'm not sure what they're trying to knock down. Hammering on the heating radiators, constant drilling and wood working. It's just too much.
The thing is, I understand a few hours on some days. But this past week, it has started at 7:30am on the dot most days and goes on through 7pm.
I'm just curious how do I ask them to not do this throughout the day? Do I have any rights as a tenant?
