March Updates + Blitz Revamped!

2023.02.02 21:52 InfernoAA March Updates + Blitz Revamped!

March Updates + Blitz Revamped!
Alpha Dog #3 (Seyfried) here. Though February has just begun, we as management believe there’s no better time than now to look towards the future, that future being March. Or more specifically, what March onwards will mean for Blitz and the Pure Division. While it may be initially popular, I assure you… uh, yeah. I don’t need to assure anything. This is going to be radical, folks.

New GM

For anyone that missed our glorious edition of the February Updates, there’s a new Blitz GM who’ll be taking over the vacant spot, and he’s none other than Yours Truly. That’s right, Brian Hill Inferno is the new Blitz GM. And I cannot express how genuinely excited I am to get that spark back into the division that it’s been sorely missing. Personally, Pure Rules has helped me find that passion in booking again, and I strongly urge others to consider giving it the old college try if they haven’t already. A stress-free, maximum 1000-word commitment each week sounds like a steal if you ask me. And unlike before, there’ll be a proper structure to this like the Heavyweight Division, with a consistent weekly show and a set of annual PPVs to look forward to, and more.

General Aesthetic

As some of you may be aware, I’m a massive old-school ROH fan and an equally enthusiastic indie wrestling enjoyer, and as such, I’ll be hoping to incorporate some of that same underground feel into Blitz moving forwards, like Black & Gold NXT once was compared to the Main Roster. The closest vibe I can picture is something of that aforementioned classic ROH with its myriad of gritty pure wrestling masterclasses led by the likes of Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness.
Blitz will still be running from Friday 10PM EST to Monday 10PM EST each week starting in March (aside from PPV weeks like Firestorm), but there should hopefully be special episodes dotted along the way. I’m partial to the EVOLVE/PROGRESS style of giving each show a title alongside its numbering, so let’s hope my creativity serves me enough to keep things interesting from week to week with unique taglines. And hey, even if not, the cards will no doubt still be worth joining in on.

FBE Pure Championship

Visual representation of what the title would roughly look like in kayfabe
The prize to strive for in the Pure Division is our coveted FBE Pure Championship, back from its month as the X Division Championship. Already boasting 4 brilliant reigns, currently entering its 5th under the record 2nd spell of Dr. Logan Wright – a man I’d like to give a special congratulations to on his incredible achievement, proud of you my friend – the rest of you could have the chance to add your names to the title’s legacy should you consider stopping by on future episodes of Blitz.

Blitz Official Theme Song

Like Firestorm has had “This Fire Burns” by Killswitch Engage as its staple music for the past 4 years, Blitz will also have a tune of its own to be remembered by, that being “Adrenaline Rush” by Twista. Fast and hard-hitting, it should perfectly capture what Pure Rules is all about.

PPVs

Alongside our regular Big 4 PPVs (New Beginning, WarZone, BTE, Final Stand), we’ll also be having our ‘Blitz 4’ PPVs in the same months, those being February, May, August, and November. These will serve as spiritual successors to the Overcharge series of last year, providing a bigger platform for important Pure Rules matches to be showcased. And they are as follows:

February: Hurrah! Another Year…
Named after Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies’ 2004 EP, or as we better know it, the beloved submission finisher of one of the greatest technical wrestlers alive today and all-around British hero, Zack Labour Jr., this will be the first of our 4 PPVs. And it’s no coincidence that it roughly coincides with the Chinese New Year. To be honest, times have been hard on FBE lately, but the CCP have graciously offered to sponsor and support us through our struggles. So, we’ll be returning their kindness by dedicating this PPV to them.
With traditions highlighting mythological creatures like the symbol of rebirth, “Fènghuáng” (the Chinese Phoenix), and its counterpart, “Shenlong” (the God Dragon), it’s the perfect way to “rebirth” our calendar in the Pure Division whilst giving a subtle nod to other more technically proficient dragons like their American breed, Bryan Danielson. Long Live Sabre.

May: P.U.R.E (Perfectly Unadulterated Regal Excellency)
Mr. Perfect. William Regal. Bret Hart. What do they all have in common? They’re lauded as some of the greatest pure wrestlers to have ever grappled. And they’re the kinds of wrestlers that should be emulated to make it far in these lands. The Pure Division’s version of BTE, P.U.R.E will coincide with the Anniversary of the first-ever episode of Blitz, which took place in May of last year. In addition to an undoubtedly stacked card, it’ll feature the Finals to our annual tournament (more on that later), proving to be a fitting stage to write your name in the history books forever.

August: Rush Hour
For the Wild Westers and FBE historians, we’ll be bringing back a classic for BTE season. Given that FBE’s largest annual show will take up the bulk of preparations and energy that month, this PPV will offer a unique challenge to the roster, in which the show will have a 24-hour deadline. The original Rush Hour PPV seeing the likes of Desmond Caid vs Atlas Rogue, Fruit Gambino vs Nate Matthews, FBE’s first-ever cash-in, and Capital STEEZ’s PPV debut, the sequels to come should be just as thrilling with a whole new crop of talent to bear the test of booking and submitting within a day (don’t ask for extensions I swear to God I will kill you).

November: The Shinkansen Express
You know who likes trains? Ethan Fadely. And if you haven’t noticed, his opinion is very important here as Alpha Dog #2. This show exists purely to keep JT (Elmer) in FBE. Well, there’s another reason, but that’s the one we’re focusing on right now. Shoutout The Aether Ace.
Since the name Bullet Train was already taken by Brad Pitt’s career greatest movie, November’s PPV will instead be named after the Japanese equivalent to said phrase – “Shinkansen”. Not nearly as traumatising as the underground STEEZ faces on his daily commute, this high-speed train themed show will feature the debut of Blitz’s very own unique stipulation – “Silver Bullet”.
Our counterpart to Guerrilla Warfare, the reigning champion will defend against 4 other competitors across 3 rounds (24 hours of booking and 24 hours of voting each), with the votes of each round being tallied at the end to determine the ultimate winner of the bout. Whoever places last is barred from challenging for the title over the next 3 months. In kayfabe, it’ll be contested like WWE’s famed “Championship Scramble” – competitors entering in timed intervals, with unofficial reigns being recorded along the way through each ensuing pinfall, the person at the end of the time-limit with the last pinfall being declared the winnechampion.

Annual Tournament

I mentioned a tournament earlier when introducing our flagship PPV, and it’s now time to shed more light on that. In the Wild West days of FBE, we witnessed… quite something by the name of the E1 Climax, won by Atlas Rogue. Though the concept was great on paper, the execution is where it ultimately faltered. Having its 10 competitors push through matches for 5 straight weeks at a time when voting had at one point dropped to a miserable low of 3 voters, the less said about the tournament outside its brilliant Finals match, the better.
When Blitz returns in March, things will hopefully be different, as we’ll be bringing back the E1 Climax under the name of the “Shining Light League”, paying homage to the first person to experiment with Pure Rules in early FBE – Hall of Famer Petite Jupiter. Spread over the following couple months, participants will be divided into two blocks that’ll compete in their respective tournament matches in alternating weeks (rather than be constantly working throughout the entire period), with the round-robin culminating at P.U.R.E, the winner earning a shot at the FBE Pure Championship! In the event the champion wins, they may pick their next challenger instead.

Other Housekeeping

Alongside everything already mentioned, here’s just some other general notes:
  1. As GM, I’m making the choice to step down from challenging for the Pure Title. This is about y’all for me, and I’d rather keep it that way. That being said, I’ll still be working Pure Rules matches as often as possible for anyone that wants to test themselves.
  2. Whilst we usually only have regular 1-on-1 Pure Rules matches on Blitz, please be aware there’s other match types to toy around with if you’re looking to use Blitz as a platform to build a story. You can work tag matches, hardcore-style stipulations (No DQ, Unsanctioned, etc.; 1K Words but links and pictures are allowed), the newly-introduced Pure version of 2-out-of-3 Falls – British Rounds, as well as regular 2-out-of-3 Falls bouts.
  3. This upcoming FBE Anniversary loop will be the culmination of Season 1 of Blitz, at the end of which those with the best performances/records will be entered into a #1 Contender’s match at New Beginning V for a shot at the title on the first Blitz of March.

With that being said, let’s get into introducing our upcoming show…

Hurrah! Another Year… I (February 4th 10PM EST to February 11th 10PM EST)

The first of our Blitz 4 PPVs is starting in the next day or so and will be included in the ending of Blitz’s Season 1. Shortly after this post goes up, I’ll be sending out messages asking if people are interested in participating, and the card will subsequently be thrown together on short notice, so please be punctual in your responses. If I don’t happen to message you but you want in, feel free to shoot me a DM and I’ll see if there’s still a spot I can accommodate you with.

That should be it for now, but if you have any questions, feedback, criticisms, etc., again my DMs are open for talking, and we can work together towards producing the best possible version of Blitz. Pure Rules for life, baby.

2023.02.02 21:52 arugularabbit How to find non-fiction authors for virtual presentations?

For whatever reason patrons at my library enjoy presentations by non-fiction authors. Travel, history, and memoir authors are some that have been popular in the past. It's not always in person either; even with Zoom fatigue, virtual presentations are no problem if the subject matter is engaging enough.
We can't afford the famous expensive authors, and I know there are plenty of affordable ones who would accept a modest honorarium for a virtual presentation, but I don't know how to find them. I frequently have this problem: I see a book that sounds interesting and I think patrons would like to hear from this author, but after doing some research I see no evidence whatsoever that the author has any speaking experience. I'm reluctant to reach out and suggest a presentation to someone who doesn't have experience with public speaking. I think we've all learned the hard way that not all authors have both subject knowledge AND presentation skills. Yes, I can always ask the author if they presentation experience, but then I foresee spending a ton of time emailing 20 authors, for example, and only ending up with one who says they are comfortable with and experienced in doing a presentation. Is there a more efficient way to find the people I'm looking for?
tl;dr How can I more easily find non-fiction authors who can put on a good Zoom presentation for my patrons?

2023.02.02 20:41 hello-everything JKR Topic Embargo Reinstated

In recent months the mod team has experimented with easing up on our previous “topic embargo” disallowing all discussion of JK Rowling. However, this no longer feels possible. Regardless of your personal feelings (or lack thereof) towards her, we will be limiting these conversations for the following reasons:
  1. Allowing conversation about JKR quickly spirals into bigoted language towards LGBTQ+ individuals. For primarily the dignity of LGBTQ+ users but also for the longevity of the subreddit at large, we cannot provide any kind of opportunity for this language to start in the first place.
  2. Users who rally behind JKR under the guise of “keeping things about the game” are still taking conversations off topic from the actual game. JKR does not need anyone to come to her defense, and this subreddit especially does not need to be a platform for that.
  3. Users who actively engage in an “us vs. them” mentality with comments about “Twitter activists”, “woketivists” etc. merely feed into this dynamic which they claim to hate. Comments about how you enjoy trolling people on other social media platforms, or how you are buying extra copies to troll the critics, is still trolling. This content breaks subreddit rules and will be removed.
Defending JKR is not the purpose of this subreddit, and it has taken the greater community dialogue in this subreddit more off-track than her critics ever have.
Users who genuinely feel conflicted about buying the game and would like to talk that through in good faith will be able to continue to do so in our Boycott + Ethics megathread for the time being. This thread will continue to be monitored by the mod team. Comments which are not made in good faith or are otherwise unconstructive will be removed. Comments which use derogatory language, in this thread or anywhere else on the sub, will be removed and the user will be banned, with the duration/permanency at the mod team’s discretion.
The mod team firmly believes LGBTQ+ individuals are deserving of dignity, respect, and inclusion.
Any users who cannot behave in the same way should find a different place to discuss Hogwarts Legacy.

tl;dr All discussions about JKR, positive or negative, are once again disallowed. Let’s keep our focus on Hogwarts Legacy and all the great work done by Avalanche.

The Worst Morning Routine by Dr Huberman
“All I want to know is where I’m going to die so i’ll never go there” - Munger
Let’s invert the question “What is the perfect morning routine?”.
Here are the 5 things to do in the morning if you want to disrupt your body clock, get poor sleep quality and set your day in motion in the worst possible way.
  1. Hit snooze and stay in bed
  2. Grab the phone and start scrolling
  3. Keep the curtains and blinds drawn
  4. Drink caffeine immediately
  5. Don’t do anything challenging in the morning
Hit snooze and stay in bed
Now you know we love to hit that snooze button at No More Snooze, there’s no greater feeling than saying ‘no’ to the world first thing in the morning. Those extra 10 minutes keep us warm, comfortable and protect us from the real world.
After hitting snooze 2 or 3 times, the next best thing to do is stay under the covers and milk every last second in bed before you literally have to get up. Start work at 9am and work from home, get out of bed at 8.59am. Need to catch the train to work, get out of bed at the last second so that you inevitably have to run to catch the train. Recently unemployed, stay in bed all day!
There are so many other advantages to starting your day like this and it compounds when you couple this with scrolling on social media first thing in the morning.
Grab the phone and start scrolling
You 100% missed something important whilst you slept. Grab your phone and check out what your second cousin said about her child’s school on Facebook. Quick, it’s popping off on Twitter, Elon musk tweeted ‘Doge lol’.
Now you’re caught up on last night’s news, make sure to browse Instagram and TikTok before getting out of bed. You need to stay on top of the latest viral dance trends.
Bonus points if you keep the curtains drawn and light off whilst you do this for maximum effectiveness.
Keep the curtains and blinds drawn
Avoid sunlight in the morning. It triggers a spike in healthy cortisol which anchors your body clock and metabolism making it easier to fall asleep at night.
Keep the curtains drawn in your house and don’t go outside before midday. The darkness shields you from the outside world… if you can’t see it then it doesn’t exist.
And in turn, this keeps your circadian rhythm second guessing when the day begins and ends. This leads to poor sleep quality - really important if you want to start the day hitting snooze and staying in bed again.
Dr Huberman says that avoiding sunlight in the morning is guaranteed to get your neurochemicals out of whack and start your day in the worst possible way, so make sure to take this seriously.
Combine staying in the dark with the first two morning actions and the rest of the day will follow.
Drink caffeine immediately
Once you finally haul yourself out of bed, grab some coffee or drink an energy drink immediately.
Caffeine, says Dr Huberman, completely blocks our Adenosine receptors and once it wears off we get a huge crash and fatigue kicks in in the afternoon.
His advice for making sure you get that afternoon crash is to get caffeine into your system within the first 90 minutes of waking up, but the earlier the better!
My personal favourite is two cups of black coffee within 30 minutes of waking up and then total unproductivity around 2pm until the fatigue passes (if it does).
Don’t do anything challenging in the morning
The morning is the time for you to reject any hard work. You are still in the process of waking up goddammit.
Don’t do anything too physical, you might pull a muscle and don’t even think about getting a full workout in.
And give your brain a rest, no need to jump into a hard cognitive task early in the morning. It's still trying to kick into gear after your morning routine.
Go after the easy tasks on your list first, but to be honest if you have a list at all then you’re doing it all wrong.
Bonus: Don’t have a plan
Just go about your morning without any structure or plan. Tackle tasks as they pop into your head and don’t even think about writing a to-do-list. For optimal results, do multiple tasks at once. Watch Youtube whilst you brush your teeth. If you need to iron a shirt for work then watch 4 or 5 more TikTok videos whilst the iron heats up.
This really helps to keep the brain engaged and you can carry this organisation throughout the day until your mid-afternoon crash.
Let’s be serious for a second
That was quite a fun exercise. Inverting the question makes it easier to understand how to improve our morning routine.
The question ‘What is the perfect morning routine?’ is challenging to answer. Perfection is subjective and there is no need for us to try and be perfect. But we can try to avoid the things that would make the morning disastrous.
Take the question ‘How to get rich?’. That’s a damn bloody hard question to answer and there are hundreds of possible ways to get rich yet not all of them are perfect for you as an individual.
Now flip the question ‘How do I stay poor?’. That sets out the things to avoid and we can lean into our experiences, for example:
Now will those things make us rich? No of course not, but it will help us to build better financial habits, spend less money and perhaps we are left with some surplus cash at the end of the month to put into savings or buy a few shares in a company.
Now that’s how to start getting rich.
The fundamentals matter.
The basics matter.
I’ve been guilty of searching for the perfect morning routine. All that ends up happening is that I try too many things at once and ultimately end up failing.
Try avoiding one thing at a time.
For example, stop grabbing your phone and mindlessly scrolling through social media as soon as you wake up, but don’t get out of bed, keep the curtains drawn. Just lay there. Soon you’ll feel bored and get up anyway. Do that every day for a month and then try avoiding something else.
My list here is not exhaustive, but it’s a starting point, and the words are from the horse's mouth in Dr Huberman, a very well respected Neuroscientist and podcaster at the Huberman Lab.
For me, my one habit is to use the Alarmy app to get out of bed immediately. But I’ll still scroll through social media as soon as I'm up. I’ll phase this out eventually but in my own time.
We have no chance of going from lazy slob with bad morning habits to waking up at 4am, getting in a David Goggin’s style workout and becoming a super disciplined individual.
Discipline is muscle. Let’s train it, get in the repetitions, layer in healthy habits and avoid unhealthy habits over time and let’s check our progress in 6 to 12 months.

2023.02.02 20:00 VictoryScreech23 The Season pass should allow you to pick which card that month you want as your season pass card

What do you guys think about the option to get the season pass and instead of getting the season pass card, you can choose another card that releases that month? They would put restrictions on cards like Kang for example only being able to be bought with tokens. I would rather have Kitty pride for my bounce deck than Nimrod ( nothing against the card, I prefer bounce to destroy). I think it would benefit every single member of the Marvel snap community player base and would better the game while also ameliorating some problems (if other changes, which I will soon go into, are added as well)
Prerequisites to maximize player base enjoyment of this plan: Make the season pass able to be bought with Gold AND finally have regional prices so people around the world don't have to go days without food to buy the season pass that is reasonably priced in USA.
Reason #1: Players will finally be excited for new card releases. This is the only card game where new releases not hyped because of the way card acquisition works. This proposal fixes that issue in order to drive player engagement in the longterm.

2 Diversity of decks With Zabu and Surfer running amok, some new decks would be a sight for sore eyes. I don't think anyone would argue against this point, so I don't have to elaborate further.

3 Potential to add much welcomed presentational flair. Imagine you buy the SP and 3 or 4 cubes with the cards images floating above, bobbing up and down, explode when you "snap" the card of your choice (they can present this as The Grandmaster choosing his pawns for his game). Exciting moments like these would leave players feeling hyped, similarly to opening a lootbox, without the gambling aspect since you know the card you are choosing.

4 Reasonably inexpensive to implement for Second Dinner. Since the cards are releasing anyway that respective month, might as well give players additional agency. Have the card unlock at SP level 1 and the respective variant unlock at level 50.

The only con I can think of, at the moment is that, people may say this would lead to people waiting to the end of the month to make sure they pick the "right meta" card. I don't see this as a negative since it allows those who want a card they want to have access to it immediately while rewarding patient gamers the meta card if they choose to wait (also lowering potential buyers remorse).
Thanks for reading and if a Second Dinner employee sees this, please increase Deck folders to 30 min.

2023.02.02 20:00 whynotlaptop Just completed a bow only challenge run

So, I just did a 100% run with only Simon's Bowblade. The earliest you can get it is after Vicar Amelia, because that's when the DLC becomes available. I ended up killing Amelia, Gascoigne, Cleric Beast, and Bloodstarved Beast before getting Simon's Bowblade, so I went into NG+ to clear them. I also replaced Simon's Bowblade with a Lost Bowblade as quickly as I could.
The rule for me was that I used the weapon exclusively transformed into the bow state. This meant no parrying because the gun was inaccessible, no Visceral Attacks (this personally hurt the most), no ST/SK scaling (the SK scaling only affects the melee version of the weapon, according to the wiki), no Beasthood pellet, fire or bolt papers.
For most of the run, I had runes that gave +blood vials (constantly using health for bullets was mandatory), +stamina (the charged heavy attack takes a ton of stamina), and some other misc. rune like Eye (the more enemies drop, the more blood vials and bullets I have). Most of my levels were in Bloodtinge, but I certainly recommend putting some levels into health and stamina. By the end I had like, 30/30 health and stamina and 99 bloodtinge, and I hadn't touched the other stats. I did some light bloodgem farming to upgrade the circular gem slot, but by that time I was already past Ebriatas.
This is my rating of each of the bosses and their difficulty throughout the run -

Main game bosses

Cleric Beast - Significantly harder than normal. Still very easy, but because you're trying to put distance in between you and them they actually have attacks that can hit you, instead of just hugging and smacking their butt.
Gascoigne - About the same difficulty, but different. As long as you use the gravestones to buy you time to re-up your bullets, you're fine. Big charged attacks are very possible in phase 1, but less so when he transforms. By that time, though, he doesn't have enough health to take many r1/quick shots.
Vicar Amelia - One of the few major challenges, especially because she's only able to be fought NG+. Her big overhead slam will catch you charging a big arrow, and she has a great jump to clear the distance if you have aggro. Her hitbox moves just enough that you'll miss about a third of your charged attacks if you're just doing that back to back. Her health and damage are also relatively intimidating - even at a +10 Lost weapon doing 716 per charged shot it still takes a ton of arrows to take her down, and that's assuming you can shut down her heals.
Bloodstarved Beast - Also a major challenge. The early phases are easy, but by time he gets to the end and he's zooming around the room faster than you can track. You're going to need to carefully time your attacks if you want to get your hits in because he loves to dodge arrows with his fast, erratic movements. This is one of the rare fights where you'll really feel the pain of not being able to use fire paper. The satisfaction I felt when I got him with no blood vials, and one silver arrow left was incredible.
Witches of Hemwick - Basically the same fight, except you can't visceral attack them : (
Martyr Logarius - He is here to wreck your shit and he will not hesitate to do so. Boss that made me miss parrying the most.
Shadows of Yharnam - Welcome to hell. Sword Shadow? Not parryable, and he will constantly be on top of you. Fireball Shadow? You better keep moving, which means no charged shots, and if you want to slow down enough to re-up your bullets, you need cover. Candle Shadow? Actually a pretty cool guy, he knows you're going through a lot and is really just there to support his friends. And you can't just eliminate one because you don't want to trigger snakeggedon. Genuinely very fun but even more high pressure than regular.
Amygdala - Very easy, just target the head and do charged attacks. You'll have to dodge the laser and the long range smacks, and make sure you time the charged attacks to finish at the end of their attack animations so you don't miss, but as long as you can do that you'll be fine.
Rom - Also very easy. Get those little guys from behind with a quick shot, and then maybe smack them with a melee arrow if necessary. Dodge the meteor attack and stay far enough from the close range attacks. For some reason, the arrows don't lose damage when hitting Rom's head like literally every other attack, so that's nice.
Celestial Emmissary - Pretty much the exact same fight.
Ebriatas - Very easy. Aim for the head. Dodge the charge and the frenzy blood spray. Congratulations, that's it!
The One Reborn - Surprisingly difficult. They're just dumping bodies on you slightly faster than your charge attacks, and because you use arrows to take out the witches first, you want to make every arrow count. Like, I still one shot them, but it was close.
Micolash - Completely negated phase 1 with the bow and then I used poison arrows for phase two, I'm not dealing with your Call Beyond.
Mergo's Wet Nurse - Pretty much the same, but easier. They're such a passive boss and using the bow only made that worse.
Gherman - Unfortunately for Gherman, when you're far enough away from him he does a slow anime walk of intimidation where he does not dodge ranged attacks. This made it incredibly easy to pump damage into him and almost completely skip the fight. It actually felt bad to destroy one of the best fights of the game like this : /
Moon Presence - Roughly the same difficulty, but different. They're pretty aggressive, so you'll spend a lot of time dodging and putting in quick shots, but if you can get distance (and sometimes the boss will give you that distance on their own) you can get some nice charged shots in.

DLC bosses

Simon - Not a boss, I hear you say, but you try killing him at like BL10 with a +0 weapon so you can get this challenge started in the first place. You can cheese him around the door into Oedon Chapel, but it's inconsistent and he will shoot you as much as possible. It's clear From didn't want him to die.
Ludwig - Shockingly easy? You want to be dodging first and foremost, because he can easily combo you to death. But if you can consistently escape damage and use your windows to get more bullets smartly, you can get him to phase 2 pretty easily. Then his attacks are much slower, and if you can get their timings down you should have no problem with charged attacks.
Living Failures - On the other hand, devastatingly hard. They have a large enough health pool that you want to be spamming charged attacks, but they will constantly be the ones spamming ranged attacks on you. That means you'll spend most of your time dodging, trying to get a good opening, which means you won't be dpsing hard enough that they won't have 4 Failures up at all times, which means you'll be constantly under assault, meaning you won't have any openings, meaning... Their super attack was a nice reprieve, but if you don't kill a Failure when you hit them they'll snap out of the ult animation and start attacking you while the other three continue channeling the ult.
Maria - Oh, Maria. She suffers the same problem as Gherman, but it's still a very fun fight for two reasons : 1) she has abilities to close on you and she will not hesitate to use them, and 2) she's fast and deals enough damage when she does hit that you feel it. You'll be scrambling to get distance, get a couple good shots out, and then try to dodge her attacks again until you've got distance again. Much better than Gherman.
Laurence - It's like Vicar Amelia, but easier? I genuinely don't know how to explain the fight better than that.
Orphan of Kos - Prepare to cry, but in a good way. The strategy for this fight changes as it goes on, going from easy charged attacks, to some good openings, to just regular strong attacks while constantly dodging, to just trying to survive and get that last bit of health down with what little resources his attacks are rapidly taking from you. Extremely fun, if you only do one boss with bow mode only do this one.

Chalice bosses

Slight disclaimer - I'm rating these all at a Depth 5 status, because that's when it matters the most.
Bloodletting Beast - Why are we here? Is it just to suffer? Bloodletting Beast is big enough and fast enough to be constantly on your butt, does a ton of damage, and at depth 5 has a specific move for punishing you for being at range that prevents you from shooting him back. You want to do charged heavy shots because he has a huge health pool, but there's so few openings in his moveset. Having a cooperator really changes this fight into something manageable, even if all that summon does is sometimes grab aggro so you can get damage off.
Brainsucker - It is sooooooooooo satisfying to make these guys pincushions. Very cathartic.
Yharnam - Easy peasy. Dodge the blood attacks and also shoot her.
Undead Giant - All the strengths of the Maria fight. Be careful about the cannon variant though, they have a bigger gun than you and are not afraid to use it.
Keeper of the Old Lords - All the weaknesses of the Gherman fight.
Pthumerian Elder - What a fight with the bow. Almost as strong as Orphan, highly recommend.
Beast Possessed Soul - Just... don't get hit and you're fine. Parrying normally makes this boss trivial but so does keeping distance and dodging fireballs.
Watchdog - The fight that made me want to start this run. Using the bow turns this from one of the most tedious solo melee fights where you bait out one specific attack and hope you can dodge the rest into an actually fun, engaging boss fight. Really recommend trying this fight out if you have a bowblade handy.
Pthumerian Descendant - I couldn't do it. This boss is just too damn aggressive. They will rush to your face and constantly spam attacks. If they don't, they have a better ranged attack than you. I can't find a strategy that wins using the bow.
TL;DR - Do a bow run, it's fun.

2023.02.02 19:35 Formal-Opposite6519 Mages from Popular Comics

I've been thinking about magicians from various comic books and how they might be translated into Mage characters. Specifically, I am looking for at least one for each Mage Tradition. Here are a few I've thought about so far. Some of these are actually psychics rather than magicians, but it's slim pickings out there. Feel free to add or correct.
--Main Nine Traditions --
Akashic Brotherhood Bleeding Monk (Valiant) Spheres: Correspondence 3, Entropy 2, Forces 3, Life 3, Matter 3, Mind 5, Prime 3, Spirit 4, Time 4
Celestial Chorus **No Idea**
Cult of Ecstacy Spiral (Marvel) Spheres: Correspondence 5, Entropy 5, Forces 3, Life 3, Matter 3, Mind 3, Prime 3, Spirit 2, Time 5
Dreamspeakers Shaman (Marvel) Spheres: Correspondence 4, Entropy 2, Forces 3, Life 3, Matter 3, Mind 3, Prime 4, Spirit 5, Time 3
Euthanatos Jinx (DC) Spheres: Correspondence 2, Entropy 4, Forces 4, Life 2, Matter 2, Mind 2, Prime 4, Spirit 2, Time 2
**Not sure if there is a better representative out there. Maybe Selene from Marvel, though she is more like a Sleeper psychic and Linear Magician who is simply long-lived and crazy-powerful. Or maybe Spawn from Image Comics. I don't know what his stats are, though. Or Master Darque from Valiant, but, again, not sure about his stats. Maybe Magik from comics, but she deals with demons more than with death** Order of Hermes Dr. Strange (Marvel) or Dr. Fate (DC) Spheres: Correspondence 5, Entropy 4, Forces 5, Life 2, Matter 4, Mind 3, Prime 5, Spirit 3, Time 4
Sons of Ether Divinity (Valiant) Spheres: Correspondence 5, Entropy 2, Forces 4, Life 3, Matter 4, Mind 4, Prime 5, Spirit 2, Time 5
Verbena Brother Voodoo (Marvel) Spheres: Correspondence 2, Entropy 1, Forces 3, Life 5, Matter 2, Mind 4, Prime 4, Spirit 5, Time 3
Virtual Adepts **Not sure. The closest I can think of that would be Neo from the Matrix Comics**
--Lesser Known Traditions-- Then there are the newer Traditions that I am unfamiliar with
Ahl-i-Batin **No idea**
Bata'a ** Not sure. Maybe Mambo Jenny from Valiant, but she doesn't actually serve the Loa. Hers is an incredibly eurocentric take on Voodoo where she is "a master of" Voodoo rather than a servant to the Loa. Possibly Calypso from Marvel, but I'm not familiar with her stats.**
Children of Knowledge **Not sure. Maybe Enchantress from Marvel. If so, Correspondence 3, Entropy 3, Forces 4, Life 4, Matter 5, Mind 4 or 5, Prime 4, Spirit 2, Time 2**
Hollow Ones Nico Minoru Correspondence 4, Entropy 3 (and a bit internalized), Forces 5, Life 2, Matter 4, Mind 2, Prime 3, Spirit 2, Time 2
Kopa Loei *No idea*
Ngoma *No idea. Although, I am particularly interested in this one.*
Sisters of Hippolyta *Not sure. Maybe Agatha Harkness. If so, her stats would be Correspondence 4, Entropy 4, Forces 5, Life 5, Matter 4, Mind 4, Prime 4 or 5, Spirit 3, Time 3 *
Taftâni *No idea*
Templar Knights *Not sure, but I'm curious*
Wu Lung *Not sure. Maybe the Mandarin from Marvel, but he is more like a Linear Magician than an Awakened Mage. Toyo Harada from Valiant seems like a better fit, although he is a psychic rather than a magician. He's also Japanese rather than Chinese, but I guess the Wu Lung now has some members who are not Chinese men.*
--The Technocracy Conventions--
Iteration X **Not sure. Maybe Dr. Who, or a super scientist from Marvel's AIM. I suppose Forge from Marvel is also a good possibility**
New World Order **Not sure. The closest person I can think of is Mojo from Marvel. If so, Correspondence 5, Entropy 4, Forces 3, Life 4, Matter 3, Mind 4, Prime 5, Spirit 2, Time 4. Curious if there are better fits**
Progenitors **The only thing that comes to mind are scientists like Shou Tucker in Fullmetal Alchemist (manga rather than a comic, I know), or perhaps Tilda Johnson from Marvel.**
Syndicate **No individual comes to mind, but perhaps the sorcerers in Black Monday Murders from Image Comics**
Void Engineers Dr. Vincent Morrow (Witch Doctor - Image)
**Not sure. Maybe Dr. Vincent Morrow (Witch Doctor - Image), Sleepwalker from Marvel, or Ghost Busters**
**It's weird to have a list like this and not have Scarlet Witch or Zatanna on it. I guess Scarlet Witch's original power set would have been a good fit for Euthanatos. But in her current incarnation, she is a floater that would have been an Orphan who trained with the Order of Hermes for a while (via Dr. Strange), and maybe comes from that Bat Bineh culture, given her Jewish heritage unless that has been retconned too. It's hard to keep up. As for Zatanna, she is hard to throw into a Tradition because she is a subspecies that happens to do magic.***

2023.02.02 19:25 Dalatirox AITA for not wanting to pay for a ticket to attend a friends wedding?

This story isn’t the most complicated.
A friend of mine got engaged on October 31st of last year and while I am happy for her and all, I received a text from her last night saying “Hey your Halloween next year is booked because thats when we are gonna get married at Disneyland. You need to buy your ticket in June!”
My problem is I pay a good amount in monthly living expenses and, June and October are costly months for me in general as it stands. I can only imagine the hiked prices for Disney in Halloween on top of that.
I also am not the biggest fan of Disneyland in general and would not intend on staying in the park in general after the wedding so that also holds to my reluctance to spend money on it.
I don’t want to be an asshole but ultimately it feels weird in general to hold your wedding somewhere that people would need to pay that kinda money to attend in the first place.
TL;DR Friend wants a Destination wedding at Disney but wants guests to pay for the tickets to attend.
UPDATE: So a few more things.
She claims the tickets will be cheap if they’re ordered ahead of time thus why she said buy in June because can’t even buy for October as of right now to verify that claim which has me more reluctant
I am lead to believe they are planning to use their own officiant in the park which I am pretty sure is not allowed.
And I also did say to her “Hey -friend- I love you but I have a lot of costs in general and I expect October to be costly for me as it stands, I don’t think I could afford a Disney ticket on top of it”
For her initial response to be “Lol well thats what were doing and if you cant you cant” which knowing her was meant to be sent with attitude about it.
I just feel like there are so many red flags in this all together now.

2023.02.02 18:57 PlanesCarsBars88 Girlfriends past and a bit traumatized

TL;DR I am having troubles with my girlfriends past and am struggling mentally.
M20 and F20: we have been dating for a year and a half now. We are madly in love, she does everything for me, takes great care of me and we have a great relationship. That was until last month where I pulled the cables and broke up with her. I did it because I was overthinking too much. We are seeing each other again now. At the start she would always go out of her way to make it look like she had options and talked to guys that wanted to get in her pants on social media and flirted with them in-front of me and made it very apparent. I finally asked her why she did this because it’s very toxic, she said it was because I was intimidating and was popular and had lots going for me and she wanted me to engage and give her more attention. It wasn’t until I said I don’t have the time for women like that then she changed. Because of that I know have issues with believing things she says because I am a bit corrupted by that. I am also having issues as she had a one night stand with my friend before us and she said she never had feelings for him and wish she didn’t do it and felt a pressure into sleeping with him because of friends trying to set her up. I live with this guy at school and it really eats me up as I think about that fact they have connected like that. Am I supposed to just be okay with this or is it normal I don’t exactly feel secure in this place? I always feel like she is going to play with me even though she has came a long way and changed completely. Due to these things I have developed insecurities which I don’t know are valid or not. I am not an insecure person, I am a go getter and have a solid drive and confidence. This is my first relationship and I don’t know what is right and wrong. Thank you.

In ancient Kahndaq, Teth Adam bestowed the almighty powers of the gods. After using these powers for vengeance, he was imprisoned, becoming Knock at the Cabin. Nearly 5,000 years have passed, and Knock at the Cabin has gone from man to myth to legend. Now free, his unique form of justice, born out of rage, is challenged by modern-day heroes who form the Justice Society: Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Atom Smasher, and Cyclone.

Production companies: Warner Bros. Pictures.

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Knock at the Cabin would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam, and so on. As

Knock at the Cabin neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).

“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in Knock at the Cabin, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's Knock at the Cabin.)

“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in Knock at the Cabin, we acknowledge everyone: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There are also some Easter eggs in there, too. So that's what I meant by the resetting. Maybe resetting' wasn't a good term. only

one can claim to be the most powerful superhero. And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel, or otherwise

"By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful.

There's nothing so wrong with “Knock at the Cabin” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two-hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “Knock at the Cabin” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.

It's no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naïve delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. Knock at the Cabin” offers a moral realm that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him there—had a new movie in theaters. You're Crazy, Jerry."Knock at the Cabin " could be retitled 'You're a Superhero, Dwayne'—it's the marketing team's PowerPoint presentation extended to feature length.

In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “Knock at the Cabin” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.

“They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn't know until maybe a day or two before the premiere,” he recently said Knock at the Cabin (2022) FULL MOVIE ONLINE

Is Knock at the Cabin Streaming on Disney Plus?

Unfortunately, Knock at the Cabin is not currently available to stream on Disney Plus and it's not expected that the film will release on Disney Plus until late December at the absolute earliest.

While Disney eventually releases its various studios' films on Disney Plus for subscribers to watch via its streaming platform, most major releases don't arrive on Disney Plus until at least 45-60 days after the film's theatrical release.

Knock at the Cabin has finally ended the box office blues. It will be a Knock at the Cabin call, but based on the estimates, the year's biggest opener remains Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with its $187 million start. Nonetheless, Wakanda Forever's $180 million opening is a huge one, being the biggest ever for the month of November (beating the $158 million of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire), the second biggest of the year, and the 13th biggest of all time (though it could go up or down a few slots once the actuals come out). It led an overall weekend box office of $208 million, which is the fourth biggest of the year and the biggest by a long shot of the past four months, with no other weekend since July 8 -10 even going above $133 million.

This isn't the $202 million opening that we saw from Black Panther in February 2018, nor should we expect the amazing legs that were able to get that film to an astonishing $700 million. With that said, expect it to perform strongly throughout the holiday season, likely repeating the five-weekend number-one streak that the first film had, and it shouldn't have any trouble becoming the second-highest-grossing film of the year so far, beating the $411 million cume of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The audience response is strong, with the A CinemaScore falling below the first film's A+ but bouncing back from the B+'s earned by Doctor Strange 2 and Thor: Love and Thunder, which ranked among the worst for the MCU. an improvement over the recent franchise installations, with the aforementioned films coming in at 74% and 64% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes, both at the lower end for Marvel films, while Wakanda Forever's 84% is Knock at the Cabinr to franchise norms, though not meeting the high bar set by the first Black Panther's 96%.

The sequel opened to $150 million internationally, which Disney reports is 4% ahead of the first film when comparing like for likes at current exchange rates. Overall, the global cume comes to $330 million. Can it become the year's third film to make it past $1 billion worldwide despite China and Russia, which made up around $124 million of the first film's $682 million international box office, being out of play? It may be tough, but it's not impossible. Legging out past $500 million is plausible on the domestic front (that would be a multiplier of at least 2.7), and another $500 million abroad would be a drop of around $58 million from the original after excluding the two MIA markets. It'd be another story if audiences didn't love the film, but the positive reception suggests that Wakanda Forever will outperform the legs on this year's earlier MCU titles (Multiverse of Madness and Love and Thunder had multipliers of 2.2 and 2.3 respectively).

As for the rest of the box office, there's little to get excited about, with nothing else grossing above $10 million as Hollywood shied away from releasing anything significant not just this weekend but also over the previous two weekends. When Black Panther opened in 2018, there was no counterprogramming that opened the same weekend, but Peter Rabbit and Fifty Shades Freed were in their second weekends and took second and third with $17.5 million and $17.3 million respectively. That weekend had an overall cume of $287 million compared to $208 million this weekend Take away the $22 million gap between the two Black Panther films and there's still a $57 million gap between the two weekends. The difference may not feel that large when a mega blockbuster is propping up the grosses, but the contrast is harsher when the mid-level films are the entire box office as we saw in recent months.

Knock at the Cabin, which is the biggest grosser of the rough post-summer, pre-Wakanda Forever season, came in second with just $8.6 million. Despite the blockbuster competition that arrived in its fourth weekend, the numbers didn't totally collapse, dropping 53 % for a cume of $151 million. Worldwide it is at $352 million, which isn't a great cume as the grosses start to wind down considering its $200 million budget. Still, it's the biggest of any film since Thor: Love and Thunder, though Wakanda Forever will overtake it any day now.

Knock at the Cabin came in third place in its fourth weekend, down 29% with $6.1 million, emerging as one of the season's most durable grasses and one of the year's few bright spots when it comes to films for adults. The domestic cume is $56.5 million Fourth place went to Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile, which had a negligible drop of 5% for a $3.2 million sixth weekend and $40.8 million cume., in fact )

, which isn't surprising considering it's the only family film on the market, and it's Knock at the Cabin to grossing four times it's $11.4 million opening. Still, the $72.6 million worldwide cume is soft given the $50 million budget, though a number of international markets have yet to open.

Finishing up the top five is Smile, which had its biggest weekend drop yet, falling 42% for a $2.3 million seventh weekend. Of course, that's no reason to frown for the horror film, which has a domestic cume of $103 million and a global cume of $ 210 million from a budget of just $20 million.

Hi! Just recently had some ups and downs with Dr. Melissa Johnson's office and my next option is Dr. Topal. Dr. Johnson's office ignored my "dysphoria" code and said my BMI was too high. Does anyone have any experience with Topal and can give me some information or post-op pictures? I would really appreciate it. Since i'm kind of being forced onto Topal, I've been feeling really nervous overall and I just want some reassurance from reddit.

Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising
eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in Knock at the Cabin
would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed:
What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of
DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice
League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As Knock at the Cabin neared theaters,
though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment
(watch above). “I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and
what we have in Knock at the Cabin , which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we
introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman,
Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's
Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would
be DJ's Knock at the Cabin .) “And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated
the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these
characters interact. That's why you see in Knock at the Cabin , we acknowledge
everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge
everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the
resetting.Maybe 'resetting' wasn't a good term.only one can claim to be the most
powerful superhero .And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible,
5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful
superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel or otherwise By the way, it's not hyperbole
because we made the movie. And we made him this powerful. There's nothing so wrong
with “Knock at the Cabin ” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the
appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see.
spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the
genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only
hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “Knock at the Cabin ” feels like a place-filler
for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it
does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the
churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the
movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero. It's no less numbing to
find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of
the naïve delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in
and then waved away with dazzle and noise. Knock at the Cabin ” offers a moral realm
that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests
any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and
repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its
import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him
there—had a new movie in theaters. You're Crazy, Jerry."&c2&" could be retitled 'You're
a Superhero, Dwayne'—it's the marketing team's PowerPoint presentation extended to
feature length. In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “Knock at the Cabin ”
is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to
set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely
unaware of it until he saw the film. “They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn't
know until maybe a day or two before the premiere,” he recently said Black Panther 2

2023.02.02 18:29 phantasticpipes Me [M27], My Girlfriend [F23], and My Texting Habits.

Background: I have ADHD and i’m usually found switching between multiple tasks at the same time. I don’t think it should change the situation much but thought i’d offer that information.
We have been dating for 4 years.
OK, so my girlfriend and I don’t live together and the most of our communication is done online. We facetime daily and text throughout.
Whenever I text her, I tend to do other things at the same time, e.g. I would reply with my opinion on something, write a line of code for a project, pick up the phone and see her reply, reply again, etc.
This is automatic. I become EXTREMELY bored if I just send a text and wait patiently for the other party to reply.
In this past she has expressed frustration and hurt over this when I did it while she was texting something important (such as expressing her feelings on an important topic or ranting communicating something about the relationship).
In all these times I would apologize and promise to do better next time and not do anything else if she starts an important talk.
Today she started ranting about work (she is anxious about possibly being fired, so a big deal) in the middle of the day. I was on my lunch break eating and replying to her at the same time. I was (in my mind) attentive, supportive and fully engaged in the conversation.
At one point I swapped to twitter and saw that I didn’t send a tweet I wrote a bit earlier. I sent it and she got upset at me.
“Wowwwww. I am never telling you anything again don’t worry” were her words.
I apologized and assured her the bulk of my attention is dedicated to her, evident by my responsiveness. She said that she mentioned this issue before and that when I see ranting I should recognize that it is an important topic and immediately stay in the chat and not anything else as to not hurt he feelings.
She suggested that If I can’t pay full attention when she starts texting something important that I should inform her.
I don’t entirely disagree but I wish she would forgive my slip up, accept my apology and we can continue the talk without this being a big deal. Her behavior struck me as controlling and abusive.
I don’t intend on hurting her feelings and I WAS paying attention to she was saying, fully reading every word etc.
I suggested that she could preface important talks by notifying be before hand saying something like “hey could you please give me your complete attention for the next 10 minutes, thanks” and I would immediately remember and comply. She countered with “It was obvious, you can recognize that on your own”
Can you please provide some perspective? I feel like im crazy
Thanks
TL;DR: Girlfriend wants me to stay in the chat while she texts something important. I think that is controlling. Help

2023.02.02 18:05 Aljowoods103 In-Person, Public Lectures, Symposiums, Disccussions

Does anyone know a good way to find out about public lectures or discussions, particularly if related to scientific topics? It seems most of the 'things to do' type websites focus on music, art, and food. I'm looking for events that are similar to TED talks, open to the public, and can be free or ticketed.
Years ago while visiting NYC, I attended a discussion and Q&A at Pioneer Works in Red Hook. The main guest was physicist and author Dr. Sean Carroll and he spoke about few scientific topics, while promoting a new book.
I really enjoyed the event, and now that I live here, I search for similar events regularly, but have a hard time finding much. If anyone has a better way to search for these kind of engagements besides Googling and checking individual venue calendars frequently, please let me know. Thanks!

Edit: I should have clarified, I am not exclusively looking for science-focused events, though that is probably the top interest. I also would like art, food, philosophy, and economics events. And thank you for the recommendations thusfar!
