Hakry - Developer
Just want to remind all of our community members that we are all here to be able to enjoy this game we all have played and loved. Lets not forget that this project has only made it this far from volunteer contributors as well as community support. So let us all remember to be positive additions to our community as we approach the final push to the end, the 1.0 goal, that has always been talked about.
We have really made some advancements this year in hitting some of those untouched obstacles that have been lingering for years in terms of development. We are the lowest we have been on Confirmed Mantis Bug Reports in a very long. That number will continue to be driven down as the total missing remaining implementations hits zero. Finalizer has allowed us to test out a variety of changes behind configuration flags so we can view their outcome in a real time server environment and their use can be weighed for a post 1.0 server. I am sure there are many more great things to come.
Lordkator - SWGEmu Admin
It's been another crazy year on the project. We launched Finalizer in December of 2021 and spent most of 2022 progressing the project along the 14.1 target while testing new ideas on Finalizer. Since launching Finalizer, over 15,400 unique accounts have logged in and played 6,256,854 hours. I changed jobs, moved to a new state, bought a house, and continued to deal with the reality of the real-world economy and its impacts on all of us.
As if moving my life to a new state and a new home wasn't enough, our ISP told us we needed to move to new servers as they were shutting down the data center our current servers were in on 11/30, and the new cost was 2.7x our current monthly rate. So I spent a couple of months testing various providers and solutions, looking for something with the right price, reliability profile, and flexibility we needed. And instead of enjoying holidays with my family I spent them moving our very complex environment to a new service provider. We moved with very few hiccups, but this was easily 120 hours of my life, or more I will never get back.
I am building more analytics pipelines to make it easier for us to focus on the impact changes we make have on the game in general with a specific view towards the economy (credits and resources). I'm starting a series of posts based on the data we've gathered over the last year, see: Use the data Luke... Finalizer 1 Year In: Data Sources
I am happy to see the progress the project has made this year, and our dev team has grown. I've had the pleasure of mentoring new members and empowering them to move faster (with plenty of backups and tools) to support our ever-forward goal of getting to 14.1, so we can call this project done.
I'm still deciding if I will join the 1.0+ project. While I moved our services, I simplified our service setup to make it easier for someone else to maintain all our services. I did this mainly with an eye to longevity for the project, but also selfishly, so I have the option to fade away, knowing the project can still keep going from the foundation we all built over the many years... In general, staying motivated to work on this project is challenging with the amount of negativity, personal attacks, and constant claims of corruption or whatever the "drama flavor" of the day is. Even though we say it all the time, I don't think people understand what it's like to volunteer literally 100's of hours of your life and get nothing in return while also being told you're a moron, aren't doing it right, are cheating or helping others cheat. It wears on a person's psyche; while 99.99% of the community is playing a game, we're all working when we, too, could be playing this game or another or spending quality time with our family, friends, or other things. This constant wear is what keeps me on the fence about the 1.0+ project, I'm not sure it's healthy for me to continue with the project if things stay this toxic. Time will tell, but the Jury is out and deliberating. Keep that in mind the next time you post something on the forums, discord, or in chat, we're people too on staff, and we have hearts and minds, and I hope we deserve a bit of your respect for the time we all put in. However, be mindful that your post could be the one that breaks the camel's back and destroys the very thing you are so passionate about.
Soon(tm) is closer than ever, now we're seeing JTL come alive, and the final items in the dev backlog are getting shorter by the day thanks to Hakry and others leading the charge down the last miles towards the 14.1 goal.
I'm excited to see where the project heads next; it'll be interesting to see the debates fly once 14.1 is "in the can."
Loshult - Developer
Another year over, and almost everything in the 1.0 plan is either finished or ongoing. It is nice to see the community keeping up with this fantastic game year after year and it is really fun and exiting to be able to be a part of the process to get this now almost 20 year old game back to life and to the state we all loved back then.
Adaso - Quality Assurance
2022 went by fast, it saw many major 14.1 emulation milestones for the project, including the shuttering of Basilisk after a decade of service. The year also brought in a handful of QoL changes & the beginning of some custom content in the form of World Bosses, among other things.
Thank you to the talented team -- and to the community. I'm excited to see what 2023 brings.
Fastburn - Quality Assurance
We accomplished at lot in 2022, with the new server, we were able to find bugs that had hard to find with Basilisk and we have found out a lot about how some these very old bugs have been impacting players. We could not have done this without players, even after all this time reporting information to us as they play. It will only be even more busy in 2023 as we look forward to major changes for getting through to 14.1/1.0 milestones, even one of our post 1.0 milestones JTL, will require a lot of testing as we move forward. Remember there are still a lot of tickets left to work on keep on testing and reporting.
As for the Event Team, we had a very busy year with new events, changing events, player events and changes to allowed us to have more interesting events going forward. At the end of the year, we ended Basilisk in a 8 hour event, one of our longest ongoing events ran by Event Coordinators and it was a blast to end it quite literally with a bang. As always, you can request assistance with Event Coordinators for any player ran event, with some of our new tools, we can do a lot more than we have done in the past, especially for those who want some unique events. It looks like 2023 will be a blast for the Event team and I can't wait to show you what we work on next.
Jaws - CSR
Our fantastic devs and community code contributors have finished the lion's share of what was left to the 14.1 content. It is exciting discussing changes and content past the confines of 14.1. The future is bright and Soon(TM) has become much Sooner(TM)
Lavoria (Natasa) - Event Coordinator
Holy moly, 2022 has been quite the year for staff as well as the community. As always we shall continue forward in a positive manner and keep bringing the game updates, events and (gasp) possibly, maaaaaaybe, some JTL lovin. 2022 saw the end of many things, the biggest one being Basilisk's demise, and ohhhh man did it go out with a BANG! (puns). Finalizer hit its first birthday (Where did the time go, o_0) So instead of rambling on, as I've been known to do (lol), I leave you all with this. Hold onto your socks, cuz 2023 is gonna be OFF THE CHAIN! <3<3<3
Lolindir - SWGEmu Admin
A lot have been going on this year. We saw a new server at the end of last year and we said our goodbye to another server. Loved and hated. Whatever feels it gave any of us, we wouldn't have been where we are now without Basilisk. It served us well. We are closing in on the finishing line now, we can see the end of the project. We have even seen significant work done to JTL. I'm excited for the coming year and where it will take us.
📷Closing
Another year has past. There have been more happening than in a long time. More players and more with the project it self. Finalizer have seen numerous updates, instead of Basilisk updates that was 1,5 years in the waiting. The 14.1 part of our project goal is so close to be done. This year we have also introduced changes that is outside 14.1. Some controversial, others well received. We will continue that trend in 2023. There are more things we want to try before we start on our 1.0+ work. We said JTL would happen after our 14.1 goal, but slowly we are going along there too. Who knows, maybe we will meet in space in 2023. That would be something. Will you have an X-Wing? Tie Fighter? Or maybe you want to rain havoc in a Rihkxyrk? We might be able to. To me, 2023 looks promising.
Thank you for your continued support. Looking forward to seeing you out there! May the force be with us all....

2023.02.02 22:54 Nerd367C Electrostatic experiment challenge idea

It's obvious that electrostatic can lift and push objects like tinfoil, how much voltage would it take for bigger heavier objects, and by heavier I mean a few grams like a paperclip or an aluminum can, I don't expect you to lift a table, but what's the heaviest thing you can lift with your voltage. Sorry it's so long.

This was made in Ableton using the reason rack and I'm almost 100% sure its the Sq4 table. I got a little close but still pretty far off and I'm pretty sure its just coming down to processing. Also unsure what is changing to make all the variations of it.

2023.02.02 22:50 dontgiveaderp 32[M4F] Houston, Texas. Hoping to find a relationship.

I'd like to find someone who captivates me. Someone who I can talk with effortlessly. I want to meet a person who I can include in my daily tasks, and talk with throughout the day. I just want to find someone I can be open with. Platonic conversation, friendship or romance. Whatever you are looking for, don't hesitate to message me. I hope to hear from you.
I love a number of things, and hate very little. I'm fairly open to trying new things, but some of the things I enjoy are as follows. I love the outdoors. I've never been camping, but I would like to try it with someone some day. I also love to fish. I mostly fish salt water. I do occasionally fish freshwater though. I like to check out new spots around me, but I mostly fish on the beach. Do you like to fish? What are some of your favorite places to go?
I also enjoy the shooting sports. I primarily target shoot. I take part in a little bit of everything, including rifle, pistol and shotgun. It would be nice to find someone who is into shooting or would like to learn/become more familiar. If you shoot, what do you like to shoot mostly? What's been your favorite gun to shoot so far?
PC games are also a enjoyable pastime for me. I have a variety of games, most of which are on Steam. I have other games on various other stores/services. I enjoy a wide variety of different kind of games, so I'm sure we can find something to play together if you game. What are some of your all time favorite games? What are you currently grinding on that you can't put down? One hobby I discovered later on in life is Magic the Gathering. I probably would never have found MtG, if it were not for my best friend. I play both online on MtG Arena, and with physical cards. Magic has become something I am particularly fond of. Do you play any kind of card/table top games? What's been your favorite so far? If you play Magic, what are some of your favorite deck themes?
Music has always been a part of my life. My tastes are varied, ranging from country, death and black metal, electronic, classic rock, folk, pop punk, and more. Do you have a favorite band? What has been your favorite concert you've been to?
I'm honestly an ambivert. I enjoy doing things outside, as well as spending time indoors. I can veg out all day under the covers curled up in my bed, or I can take a trip somewhere and experience something new. I think my personality is a mix of the best of both worlds. What would the perfect day consist of for you?
As far as my personality is concerned, I would say I am fairly relaxed and laid back. I feel like I am somewhere in the middle between loud and excitable, and shy and quiet. Around people I don't know, I tend to be fairly quiet and to myself. In the company of someone who I am close with, I am more open and free. Do you open right up to people, or does it take a while to become comfortable with someone new?
All I hope for is a connection. It could be platonic, or it could blossom into romance, and commitment. I'm not putting a limit on what I am looking for.
With the prior being said, I am single. I may be interested in changing that with the right person. The idea of commitment excites me. Monogamy is appealing to me. Do you feel satisfied with your social life? What kind of connection are you looking for?
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. I appreciate it. I hope you can identify with something I wrote. If you do, please reach out.
P.S. Please feel free to check my post history, and check out a few pictures of my cat if you would like.

2023.02.02 22:49 Alonelyjesterdefecit Collective Thought

We all start in a world dominated by Corruption and money. But, even if the storm continues, we can all achieve our dreams.- Said by the CEO of B.O Entertainment (Gerald Williams) in 1980 in an interview for the TV. And that phrase?
Well, I don't know how directly to start this story that happened a few hours ago.
I haven't written on the internet for a couple of years.
Well, some of you must be familiar with the Garvey and the madness adventures franchise.
That mythical series of botargas created by William glowdawn and Michael glowdawn. In which values were taught and children were educated about manners, creativity, and basic knowledge at that age.
A true jewel of old television, and also of the little good that B.O can offer you in its extensive catalog of children's series and programs.
The childhood of many, including me. It brought back great memories with its charismatic characters and its crazy and fun adventures!
Anyway, I have read in many Forums that some fans of the franchise have received some strange packages sent to their homes in an apparently "Anonymous" manner. These packages are usually accompanied by documents and some other element inside those packages.
They are usually given by an anonymous, who some have nicknamed him as "Shadow Walker", due to his strange behavior... He usually dresses in a totally dark suit similar to some garment used by actors for the production of a film with special effects. And a curious Garvey the jester mask, which is a product that was officially discontinued some time ago.
I have read some anecdotes about this anonymous stranger. Some have claimed that he simply waits for you to find the package, then simply walks off into places that are generally dark.
I read about a girl who got one of those packages. It simply contained a jar with some documents, which seemed to show that she had tried to burn them. The girl, she mentioned that the documents were not of a worrying nature, they were only about company projects. Although the strange thing is that she mentioned that the Box arrived with a lot of feathers and a couple of nails inside.
Another mentioned that her box contained a stuffed toy of Garvey the jester, but that it didn't even have stuffing as one would logically think. Hell, even the stuffed animal's face had a couple of needles and scratches made with markers, it looked a bit funny, but not comically funny, but rather... It gave off a weird vibe, I couldn't describe this feeling. The stuffed animal contained letters from the executives to the employees of the Animation Department. And these, they were a little stained with ink. Like a paper mask of Monkha the monkey and a physical notepad of banzho the rabbit.
Yes, it's hard to believe that an anonymous sends packages with confidential information and puts stupid things inside the boxes. Something that has been mocked by the audience is the fact that it is usually leaked documentary information about the company. From documents about new projects, renovations etc, to documents about financial records and decision making.
But...I see that many people close to this franchise are also receiving this type of email about alleged practices with something called "Collective thought". It is not the first time that this company has been accused of having strange behaviors and the occasional controversy, some justified, and others not.
One of the most ridiculous that I even heard in my teenage days was that B.O was trying to instill Satanism in children. Supposedly some parents and especially some other religious group argued that one of the characters in the band "Cranky tunes" had the name of a demon. As a teenager, I always kept my fanaticism towards the program, I mean, it was a children's program, although nowadays it is no longer seen strangely, although in those days it was rare to see. I never encouraged myself to investigate the subject, and I was always left wondering if the claims were real or not.
At least 2 years ago, I decided to investigate, since I got curious. Upon further investigation, I found that the claims were true. I was not impressed or disappointed. Come on, this isn't something weird, I guess. It's just a name! I thought. It was the name of a demon described in the demonology book "Pseudomonarchia daemonum"
Also, the company has been accused of being double-faced with respect to the supposed Apollo that they give to ethnic groups and the LGBTQ+ community. Very similar to a certain company of a mouse with whom they have certain ties and connections.
And the controversy that resonated some time ago:
The rumor said that that nursery located in the recording and production studios of the B.O company, had some costumes of the characters classics of the program as the caregivers of the children. Specifically the "Cranky Tunes" band, They looked realistic enough to be just "Some well done costumes on a bird, A flower, A candy princess, a police lion, a monkey with cymbals, and an ice cream man" Mmh.
Dude, even Margareth the flower looks skinny enough for someone to fit inside a bog of that proportion. I wondered the same thing about Phillip the lion's botarga. How is it possible that a bottarga can carry a flower, that its limbs are almost as thin as a broomstick...?
Much has been theorized about these strange "Beings". Since they are demonic beings, or simply robots or androids of a technological level superior to almost the rest.
I've heard a lot about this company, but for some reason people like to associate companies with satanic, nonsense. A supposed argument that they gave was, as I already mentioned, the name of Andrealphus.
Anyway, I disconnected from the franchise since the renewals towards it. The alteration of the classic designs and the inclusion of new characters without the same charisma as the originals, has distanced me more and more from this franchise.
Like the others, I received a package.
I heard a noise, more than a knock on the door, as any person with common sense would, it sounded more like some kind of knock with some kind of construction instrument. I took a self defense weapon, I went downstairs quietly, in case he tries to attack me, although, as he doesn't usually do. I opened the door and only found the package. I thought it was weird that it was delivered to me, Mike (the package delivery guy) who is my boyfriend's best friend, I knew he wasn't home due to business trips, so I assumed the box was for me. He was a little squashed, almost as if he had been stepped on, that's what he hit my door with. And for some reason it was also kind of wet. I just picked it up, and saw the dark walker in the distance. Far away, standing firmly, doing nothing, motionless. His gaze was cold and somewhat gloomy with such a mask. Before entering, he pointed to my door, when I looked at my door, he had taped a piece of paper with something written on it that said: "You will be the last, with you, the truth will be revealed." When I looked at him, he was already gone. I went in and ripped off the sheet of paper, I was flabbergasted, come on, the message was clear. And knowing what happened to other people... My fear was justified.
My soul told me not to open it, but I think that as a species, curiosity is stronger than resistance.
I went to the kitchen for a knife to open the Box, and I felt watched. Almost like when you sleep and feel watched, I think... It was the worst example I could give.
Anyway, I had the courage and ended up opening it, the sound of the knife tearing the tape, it was relaxing in such a strange situation.
When I opened it, I expected the worst. But my surprise was great when I realized that there were only 2 envelopes, one black and the other brown, one bigger than the other by the way. And as the last item, there was a small bag like a screw inside, along with a blue feather.
I opened the largest envelope, and decided to read what it said. It was weird, but I feel like I had already experienced this situation, I guess it was the feeling of fear.
I finished reading, and I was a little restless, I seriously thought if what he mentioned was true, I decided better to open the other envelope, and it contained a couple of photographs. I freaked out, they genuinely looked real, and from the photo quality, they seemed to be from years or decades ago.
I don't think it's the right thing to share this, if it's for the sake of revealing the truth. Here it is. The document, totally rewritten as it was written. (There were 3 letters or sheets)

"Defect, description"
Deficit Power: Found in an old trunk found under an old apartment building in Alabama. It was a series of Scrolls dating from 1556 to 1590 A.C They presented illustrations of a light energy that was emphasized to be purple. On the scroll, it talked about "Collective Thoughts". A supernatural phenomenon that was capable of manifesting: Objects, energies, resources, organic life forms, and anomalies. The power of collective thoughts releases the so-called "Defecit" energy, which, naturally over the years, is capable of manifesting forms of life or anomalies. also objects and energies in a matter of hours, minutes, or days. If you fervently believe, what you want can come true thanks to energy. Which, by unifying energy of the same rank, can create objects etc. In the same trunk, records were found about some unresolved defect cases found so far. Energy is able to be extracted thanks to magnetism. Constant use can lead to madness or insanity.
Defect cases found/or not found
"Obsidian Spear" (not found) "Plate made of warm ice" (found in 1990)
"Red Gold Dagger" (not found)
"6-horned deer with 4 pairs of eyes" (Not found)
"Golden Worm" (found in 1989)
"Tree trunk with phosphorescent blue leaves" (found in the trunk).

"Andrealphus, Collective Thought".
Experiment Number: 6661-B Number of people in part of the collective thought: 500 Results: positives.
The first test phase to carry out the collective thought began, He himself started in a considerably good way. The people in charge to start the thought, wore a mask of the character to bring to life. In this case being Andrealphus the bird.
By placing the endo skeleton, the machine was activated to begin the extraction of the energy deficit." When it started, some people couldn't stand the extraction procedure, some began to present symptoms of hallucinations and severe epilepsy. Some others began to attack other thought participants. This caused this number of people affected by matter to be exterminated. 128 test subjects were exterminated, the rest remained in their initial position, even those attacked with first-degree injuries. The process lasted a total of 10 minutes, until the body began to form on the metal base of the endoskeleton. The body first materialized the skeleton of the character and then his head. It still did not have the brain incorporated.
Page 3:
After 25 minutes the intestinal organs and the nervous system were formed, but these did not function.
At a certain point some of the participants fainted in the middle of the extraction process. There were around 67 test subjects.
At 35 minutes, the legs were already formed, with some external organs, and some areas of the chest, they already had some colorless feathers. The skin finally materialized one hour after the start of the experiment.
The process was completed successfully, Dr. Frank Hartman stopped the magnetic machine. The participants collapsed unconscious from their seats. The final step was to search for the soul that would possess the body of the Deficit. A teenager of Swedish nationality was selected, taken out of her will. According to the records of the Department of Collective Thought Supervision, the girl refused to be the murder victim for the possession of Andrealphus's body. It was only mentioned that she tried to assault the security guards who brought her to the debugging room located in section 13B of the P.C.
After a few minutes, her soul energy was drawn into a tempered glass vial. The process of her death is unknown. and her soul was placed in a syringe, together with a minute portion of her blood. Finally, Andrealphus opened his eyes, and now he's ready for the show! The last Deficit has been created for the project "Kindergarten"
It is only a matter of modifying some aspects such as; mind, voice, body movements and remote functions. Everything regarding Andrealphus outside of his creation by collective thought, will be supervised by the Selected team from section 6B of Beiou Entertainment's main facility. End of report.
Written August 13, 1989. -Dr Emily Carrey.
After reading, I was a little weird. It's like... When they reveal the truth behind something so beautiful, like your childhood incarnate. I know that that anonymous person has a purpose, to reveal to the world what B.O has been doing with this energy. But, he can't alone. He needs the help of everyone else. And if this is how the truth is revealed, everything is here rewritten.
On the other hand, the images are no less worrying. In fact, I dare say it's even worse than what you just read.
The brown envelope was a bit dirty, and it smelled a bit of earth. I do not want to reveal the images
for my own safety, and yours in case you want to forward this. Besides, I have made the occasional copy, both physical and digital, some were delivered to random people throughout my city, and the rest, I pasted them in specific places in the city where there is usually human activity.
I hope and if they try to silence me, it will be a great challenge to find them, huh.
Anyway, there were a total of nine images, which I will describe below:
Image 1:
In the foreground, there is a metallic Endo skeleton of what I think is bee mee the bee, due to the plumpness of the Endo skeleton. He himself is sitting on top of a wooden table. He has a wooden tablet embedded in his chest that reads "unit 13H". The room he is in seems to be made of wood, and looks a bit deteriorated, like a glass cabinet with a bottle of black liquid.
Image 2: On the back was written in ink "mens discordiae" which in English means "mental discord" according to Google translate. The photograph presents a room that seems to have the shape of a rather huge theater, this is the only colorless image.
You can see people sitting around with masks of the character Phillip, who have large eye gaps and mouths for some reason.
The ages vary from children to the elderly. What is striking is that all of them seem to have their eyes wide open, so much so that it is even chilling. From their eyes and mouth they spill a liquid that I suppose is blood, although due to the colorlessness of the image I suppose that it may be the liquid of the last image.
Image 3: it seems that it is a documentary photo. In it you can see some doctors near a surgical table in a room full of colors between purple and wine red. On the stretcher you can see what I suppose is one of those monsters, which is being covered by white cloth, full of symbols in the shape of the head of Garvey the jester. Although curiously the headline refers to the fact that the monster belongs to the "Bug gang", other iconic characters of the program. (Which I will not describe in detail)
Image 4: You can only see a large and gigantic metal door, full of small blood stains. It has a wooden sign hanging from what I assume is the ceiling, the inscription read "Character Preparation Room".
Image 5: on the back was written the word: "Corrupted". And it is the most chilling, at least for me.
You can see a room full of hooks that hang from both the walls and the ceiling, with some advertising posters from the GATMA franchise. And a couple of Garvey's suits are hanging, they are leaking a strange black liquid, and some of the suits are missing parts of their limbs, such as arms, legs, hands or feet. I find it curious that where any extremity is missing, a white spike protrudes with a faded red color at the tip. And some of these had happy expressions, and also out of their mouths and eyes were these strange spikes.
Image 6: a photograph of the filming of episode number 39 of season 3 of the original program. Although, curiously, the bee mee costume is different from the one that appeared in the official program.
Image 7: the most curious, at least for me.
They are gigantic metallic tunnels, in which you can see some strange doors in the walls of the tunnels. These are red in color and are apparently metal.
You don't see any kind of solid surface to step on, otherwise you see water and some canoes full of boxes and film cameras. It seems that the roads are water or something.
The disconcerting thing is to see some doctors carrying a corpse of one of those monsters inspired by Willy the rat.
Image 8: You can see a fairly extensive place, similar to a hospital, but adorned with the aesthetics of the program. In it are large piles of black bags and bloodstains everywhere. Some doors are knocked down and others destroyed.
final image:
It seems to be similar to a toy store or something similar. Toys are scattered around a door leading to an industrial toy-making machine. The Warehouse looks a bit abandoned and old.
As you will see, not all of them are terrifying, but others are. I find it hard to believe that I'll be the one with whom the truth comes out, I hate to say this but honestly I'm afraid to post this. Nothing had ever happened to me so long I suppose.
If I receive anything else or something interesting happens to me, I will update.
I hope you find this.

2023.02.02 22:47 Upbeat_Tell3011 AITA for buying the wrong cough syrup?

throwaway account
I (22F) live with my husband (35M) and his mom (70sF).
6 months ago she lived alone 2000 miles away but she started having issues - falling, hospitalizations, etc. So I suggested she move in with us. After another 3 day hospital stay, everyone agreed it’d be better if she lived with us.
I’d say things are a little awkward between us, she’s not fully lucid most of the time, so I don’t know how to talk to her. She smokes a ton of weed. I’m also very shy, I’ve been called standoffish a lot. So when my husband’s at work, I just focus on my chores and our pets.
Last month, my husband bought a bottle of tequila for us, snuck it to me in the kitchen, and told me to hide it in our bedroom. His mom is a recovering alcoholic. She told me she got sober 2 months after giving birth to him.
The other day, I had to head out to get cat litter. My MIL saw me getting ready to leave and asked me to pick up cough syrup. She goes through 3-4 bottles of cough syrup per week, so I’m familiar with the request. The only thing is - usually my husband buys it for her, so he knows the exact brand she likes. But she tells me: “the one I like, okay?” so I just said “Ok”. I’ve never inspected the label on the bottle before, because she’s always holding it in her hand. But I thought it’s just a purple liquid in a bottle, and I know exactly what the bottle looks like, just not the exact label. How many ways could I mess this up?
I get to the store and see one of the bottles says “10% Alcohol” so I figure I shouldn’t get that one, since we had to hide the tequila from her.
So I bought the other one.
When I got home she was in a daze on the couch, as per usual, so I put the cough syrup on the table and walk away. An hour or so later, she starts yelling about how I can’t do anything right. I come into the living room and she’s really angry. I didn’t apologize, I just stared at her, and then retreated to the bedroom.
My husband gets home, talks to his mom, then comes into the bedroom and is asking me if I like his mom, if I’m really okay with her living with us, etc. I said I genuinely don’t care that she lives with us. Then my husband and I went to the pharmacy together, he showed me the right bottle: “10% Alcohol” and we bought it.
My MIL and I didn’t really speak before, but now I barely go into the living room.
AITA?

2023.02.02 22:47 IvorFreyrsson English Magic Volume 2, Ch. 4

FEATHER FALL!” I shouted, nearly to the ground. My fall slowed to a crawl, and I drifted the last ten feet, panting in fear, landing on my knees in front of none other than Blainaut.
“HOW ARE YOU NOT DEAD, YET!?” he screamed at me. Grabbing me by the collar, he hauled me to my feet. “Your mother would likely beat you to within an inch of your life had she seen that, you absolute buffoon!” He shook me like a rag doll, the anger and worry evident in his eyes. “As it is, I don’t know if I should step in for her, or if I should let Elizabet do the honors!”
“Let me do the honors for what?” As she surveyed the scene in front of her, she crossed her arms beneath her breasts, and her face fell into an expression of dismay and disappointment.
In a low, dangerous tone she said, “What. Did. You. Do?”
“Um… Hi, honey,” I weakly said.
“Shut your mouth. I’ll tell her,” Blainaut said, still holding my shirt in a fist.
Elizabet arched an eyebrow, “Well?”
“This absolute idiot just dropped himself from the ceiling,” sputtered my captor.
“I thought it would be fas-”
“Silence!”
“Yes, sir.” I hung my head in shame.
“I just watched him make no fewer than thirty lights up there, ringing a massive object in the center, which I’ve no doubt is for the benefit of the Haarthuu, and then he just…dropped down. I know it was intentional, too, as he looked around, first,” Blainaut explained. He turned to me and repeated, “Just how you have survived for forty years is far beyond me, Ivor. Your mother was absolutely right.”
He shoved me in Elizabet’s direction. “Here. He’s your problem.”
I stood there, waiting for something unpleasant. Kiri-tuk and the Elder were trying to hide their amusement at my predicament, and failing spectacularly.
Elizabet grabbed my shoulders and leaned down, her eyes boring into mine. “If you EVER get a wild hair up your ass again, ignore it,” she said in a soft, no-nonsense voice. “If you hurt yourself doing something stupid, I will ‘forget’ to numb you before healing you. Am I clear, Ivor Freyrsson?”
I swallowed audibly. “Yes, ma’am. Crystal,” I said meekly.
I looked at the cavern floor, shaking slightly. Elizabet took my chin in her hand and gently lifted my face.
“I’ll not lose you, Ivor. You’re stuck with me. Know it,” she said softly, kissing my lips gently.
“I hope I’m stuck with you for the rest of time,” I whispered.
She wrapped her arms around me and held me tightly.
“So! Tell me what you did up there?” she asked quickly.
“Yes, genius. Tell us what you made this time,” Blainaut said crossly, his hands on his hips.
“Well, I made a massive blacklight for them, and ringed it with lights that are each as bright as the full moon. Hopefully, it will maintain their health and give us all more light to see with,” I explained.
“And this was after he made several handheld lights for our medical center,” The Elder volunteered. He continued with “I watched him run up the wall and across the ceiling to get up there. It must be nearly fifty times his height, too. Absolutely impressive,” he said, obviously impressed.
I tried sinking into myself, as I could feel both Elizabet’s and Blainaut’s eyes boring holes into my head.
“Oh really?” Elizabet said, dangerously.
I looked up sheepishly. “Yeah… about that. I’ve eaten quite a bit since I made those. Once I had figured out how to make one, it was no trouble at all to simply Duplicate it.”
Elizabet stood there, tapping her foot in annoyance. “And?”
“And running up the wall was easy. I know a spell that allows me to basically move like a spider. I’ll teach you!” I said hopefully.
“No. What use would I have for that? I don’t go doing dumb things to have to run from. I don’t even like climbing trees. Why you felt it necessary to do all this in a single sitting is beyond me,” she said, crossing her arms beneath her breasts.
I looked at the floor and sighed. My enthusiasm for helping was going to hurt myself or someone I cared about. “I’m sorry, everyone. I guess I got too enthusiastic about getting things done. It’s…it’s a recurring theme in my life. I’m not sure why I go and go and go until I’ve literally nothing left to go on, or to give, but I do” -I looked up at the assembled group- “and I’d like to not do that so much, you know? I’d like to learn and know my limits. I just get so absorbed in what I’m doing, and so afraid to tell people ‘No’, that I just keep going. And eventually I wind up either doing something dangerous, like this, or falling over from sheer exhaustion,” I said, looking between Blainaut and Elizabet.
Elizabet stood in front of me and put her hand on my shoulder, saying, “You don’t have to do everything on your own, anymore. We’re your friends,” Blainaut nodded somberly. “And we will gladly help you. However we can. Okay?”
“She’s right, Ivor. I may not be able to use magic anymore, but I still have my mind. I can still devise ways of getting things done without the use of magic. Besides, who else am I going to fuss at for being a musclebound idiot?” he said, smiling warmly.
The Elder looked between the three of us, a smile creeping across his face once more. “Kiri-tuk? Have you taken the liberty of looking at your arms?” he asked.
“What? My arms? Why would I-” he stopped, dumbfounded, as he saw the colorful, swirling pattern of scales winding their way across his body. He traced the lines with a thick finger, the awe evident in his expression. “Is this… is this real?” he asked, looking up at me.
“Yes, Kiri-tuk. That is real and natural. The big light I made up there shines a special kind of light on all of us. For the Haarthuu, it causes the natural pigments in your scales to show up. Hopefully it helps with the bone sickness, too. Only time will tell. This may help explain why a lot of your clothes have a swirled pattern. I believe you all somehow perceive these colors without knowing you do. It would go a long way toward explaining some of your behaviors and ideals,” I explained.
Kiri-tuk gazed at his flesh in wonder for a moment longer, then looked up at me, tears in his eyes. “I’ve never seen myself so beautiful before. Thank you, friend.”
“You’re welcome. All of you” -I looked around at the growing crowd of Lizardfolk, who were awestruck at the sight of the colorful patterns on themselves and each other- “are very welcome. I really enj-” Before I could complete the sentence, my knees gave out, and I collapsed to the stone floor, unconscious.
Elizabet was the first to react, reaching out to grab me, and missing. “Shit! Ivor! Blainaut, help me with him. He’s passed out for some reason.” she said, worriedly.
“Dammit, man. I’ve warned him repeatedly about overdoing it,” he said, exasperated. “I’ll take his head, you get his feet.”
Together, they tried to heft me up, but I was deceptively heavy.
“What…in…the…world…?” Blainaut said, struggling. He gently set me down, staring at me, confused. “Is he made of stone?”
Elizabet grunted with the struggle. “I can’t even drag him.”
The Elder, always quick to act, had sent for his strongest masons and warriors as soon as he heard the commotion. “They’ll be here soon, Elizabet. Don’t worry yourself,” he said, gently patting her hand.
“But… He seemed just fine a moment ago. What happened?” she asked, tears in her eyes.
“I do not know. We will figure it out together. Don’t worry.”
A few minutes later, ten of the strongest Haarthuu arrived, and together, they lifted me up, and began carrying me to my room.
*********
I smelled the sea air, and heard the crying of gulls. Groggily, I opened my eyes, finding a very worried Freyr staring at me.
“We can’t keep meeting like this, Son. People will talk,” he said with a frown.
“What am I doing here, sir? One moment, I was talking to Kiri-tuk and the rest of the Haarthuu, and the next, I’m waking up here,” I looked at him, afraid of the answer. “What happened to me?”
“I don’t know. I just don’t know. Come, let us take you to Odin. He may have something,” he said as he gently helped me to my feet.
I leaned on him heavily, as my knees were still weak, as we made our way to the Great Hall. It was all I could do to put one foot in front of the other, let alone take in the sights of Asgard. The grass, I noted, was soft and ankle-high. A sweet smell came wafting up with every step we took. I stumbled several times on our way to the Great Hall. I simply had no energy. I wasn’t tired, just weak.
Eventually, we reached the door. Freyr kicked it in, yelling for Odin, who came running.
“What?! What is the meaning of-” he halted mid-sentence when he saw me. “Við höfuð Mimir! Ivor! What happened?”
I groaned as Freyr sat me down at the long table. “I have no idea, All-Father. One moment, I was speaking to Kiri-tuk, and the next, I woke up with Freyr’s worried frown in my face. I just feel so weak. I hope I’m not dead,” I said worriedly.
“Not dead yet, Son. The flow of Life still exists within you. I can see it,” Freyr said comfortingly.
“Tell me all that happened today, Ivor. I must know,” commanded Odin.
I began my tale of the day from when I awoke, to meeting with Loki, finishing with the events on the ceiling.
“...and as I was about to tell them how much I truly enjoy helping them, I apparently collapsed and woke up here. I don’t know what to make of it.” An Elf arrived, setting down a large mug of mead in front of me. I thanked her and she blushed prettily, then scurried away.
Odin sat back in his chair, stroking his beard in thought. “Loki, eh? Asked for a favor, and gifted you with his own daggers?” he sighed heavily. “I’ve no idea what mischief my blood brother is getting up to. Tread carefully there. It could be more than you’ve bargained for.” he shrugged.
“About this weakness, Odin? Have you any insight?” Freyr asked.
“No, but I think the person who may is just now arriving.” Odin said, standing. “Great Mother! A joy to see you brightening the Hall with your presence” -he placed a hand on his chest, giving a slight bow to the Lady- “here. To what do we owe the pleasure?” he asked.
The Great Mother hurried over to my side, straddling the bench, and wrapped me in her arms, holding me to her chest.
To say I was surprised would be an understatement. Even my gods looked at each other in wonderment.
After a moment, she held me at arm’s length, looking me up and down, a frown marring her divinely beautiful face. “I do not know who did this just yet, but I do know what has happened, and how to fix it,” she said serenely.
I cleared my throat, still reeling from being enveloped within her breasts. “Um… I’m ready to hear it.”
She looked me in the eyes and said, “Your magic was drained. All at once. This caused your body to go into shock, and you collapsed. Once you awaken, which may be a day or two; three at most, you will need to eat as much as you can. Much of your internal stores were destroyed at that moment. Your body will subsist on your excess mass, and once that burns off, you will wake. I shall teach you to safeguard yourself from this attack, and you will teach Elizabet. Tell no other. If you have a child, teach them, but that is it.”
I nodded, and replied with, “I’m a bit larger than most, My Lady. I’d be surprised if Elizabet and Blainaut were able to even shift my body” -I laughed- “more than four inches. I will teach Elizabet what you teach me, but I will not have children. I can’t. I had that option taken away from me a couple years ago. By choice.”
“Oh, I wouldn’t be so sure of that, big boy,” she said, leaning close to my ear, whispering “I made sure you could have everything you ever wanted in a family here once you settled on staying with your beautiful lady.” She leaned back and winked at me.
Both of my gods burst out laughing.
“Looks like you’ll truly take after me now, Son!” Freyr said, dropping onto the bench.
For his part, Odin sat back in his chair, smacking the table a couple of times. “Oho! This is too much. You shall have many strong, capable children.”
The Great Mother kissed my forehead softly. “I am the goddess of Life on Chaia. You will help build a world where my Children can live in peace,” she said gently.
I sat there, mouth agape. “You mean… I may already have gotten Elizabet pregnant?” I asked.
The Great Mother shook her head. “No, child. Not yet. Neither of you are ready. I shall keep that from happening for a time. When it does, you will know. Only when you can be assured of relative safety for her and the child, will it happen. I’ll not allow the future of my Children be put in harm’s way just because the two of you can barely keep your hands off the other,” she said with a smirk.
I turned red and Freyr giggled again. “Son, you’re gonna have to get used to this. You are definitely mine. Quit being a prude and revel in it! There is no shame in being true to your nature. Especially when done with a loving partner,” he said, smiling widely.
“Okay, okay. I get it.” I sighed, shaking my head. “What do I do in the meantime? My body is lying unconscious in Haruma, for most likely three days or more. Am I to stay here, in Asgard? Learn what The Great Mother has to teach me and just rest here?” I asked.
Odin looked at Freyr, who just shrugged. “I don’t see why not. You aren’t dead, and when you do die, we will be bringing you here. Assuming, of course, you do as we have agreed upon. Freyr will find lodging for you once the Great Mother is done with you.”
“Yes, sir.” I said, and turned to the Great Mother for Her instruction.

2023.02.02 22:46 Ex_Wye [305] Turandot and Galatea

Hello Destructive Readers. I wrote a short cross between Puccini's opera Turandot and Ovid's poem Acis and Galatea. First time posting, I hope you enjoy it, and I'm at your mercy.
[321w] The Everything Museum
Galatea and Turandot
Queen Turandot, sole monarch, was bound to marry any man who correctly answered three riddles. The punishment for an incorrect answer was death, and so many died that her beauty became famous. On her twentieth birthday Turandot was gifted a mechanical statue of a woman, called Galatea. Galatea moved and spoke as though it were alive and fascinated Turandot. That night the lonely queen took the beautiful statue for a lover and fell asleep in its arms. In the morning she became ashamed and threw Galatea out of her chambers.
What is born each night and dies each dawn? Hope.
Thereafter Turandot used Galatea each night in a secret tower. Turandot had the statue clothed by her tailor and attend her at table. During dinner a suitor mistook the statue for the queen. Turandot was overcome with jealousy. She dragged Galatea into the tower and commanded it to be still while taking up a knife. She flayed the statue and exposed its inner workings, prising open its skull to find a tangle of vibrating strings. Turandot plucked out a delicate red thread and judged Galatea an abomination.
What flickers red and warm like flame, but is not fire? Blood.
Galatea was stripped and ordered to serve the queen silently day and night. Turandot heaped upon it labour and insult but remained unsatisfied. One night Turandot was at the mirror when Galatea appeared behind, dressed in her wedding gown. Turandot was mesmerized by her double as it drove a hatpin through her heart. Galatea took the queen into her arms and carried it into the tower. Come morning the servants discovered the cold bare body and removed it from the bed.
What is like ice, but burns with heat? Turandot.
Queen Galatea remains on the throne, silent, unblinking, sole monarch, to this day.

2023.02.02 22:46 IvorFreyrsson English Magic Volume 2, Ch. 3

I stood there, staring at the quivering daggers Loki had nonchalantly buried to their hilts in the stone table. I thought for a moment, then Shaped a pair of thin sheaths for them out of the stone. I figured they would be perfect, as these blades were likely sharper than my own hunting knife, and thus more deadly. I added loops to attach the sheaths to a belt, then added a further Fortress enchantment to the sheaths. I left them on the table, and looked around. This room would do as well as any other for my workshop.
I walked outside, and found a bare patch of wall, and Shaped a window in it, letting the waste stone pile up in rounded balls on the inside. The new window was about waist high on me, and spanned almost a yard in either direction. It would be perfect.
I walked back in, and Shaped a set of sconces with shades from the ceiling, intending to fit Light stones in them. They weren’t fancy, but they would do the job well. I made them low enough that I could cap them without much trouble, and set about making some bright Light stones to go in them.
Once completed and placed, the room was much brighter, and I could see that it was, indeed, a workspace. There were low benches and tables along the walls, as well as a working bathroom with a tub. Someone had obviously used this within recent memory, as there was still some cloth and decent leather in the corner. There were also leatherworking tools as well as a loom and stitching area. This would work just fine. I could use this room for most, if not all, my future work.
I picked up one of the waste stones, a rounded ball about the size of a tennis ball, and Shaped it into a cylinder, with one end designed to hold another waste stone, and an attached cap for the same. Picking up another, I created a strong blacklight, and Fused it into the holder. I placed the cap on it, and nodded. I now had a rudimentary blacklight flashlight.
Walking outside, I uncapped the light, and swung it around the cavern walls, trying to find a seam of some reactive minerals. I searched for a good ten minutes until I found a large seam a couple hundred yards further down in the gloom. I Shaped a small block of it out of the floor, and filled it in with some scattered stone, then returned to my workshop.
Setting the block of stone down on a bench, I got to work making the first of many holders that would go in the Haarthuu’s homes. I made three before I realized that in order for this to work, I would have to go into every home in Haruma to install them. I sat back in my chair, contemplating this fact. Eventually, I gave up thinking about it, as my stomach began to complain about being empty.
I pulled the crock from my bag, Duplicated it, and set the original back in. I opened the copy, and inhaled the wonderful aroma of breakfast. I Shaped a spork out of the wall, and set to eating my meal with gusto.
It needed a little more salt and the bacon was overdone a tad, but it was, all in all, quite delicious and filling. I finished my meal, and set the crock and spork aside, filled with energy for the next step.
Rethinking my entire idea. It made little sense for me to install a blacklight in every person’s home, as most of their time would be spent out and about in the city. I could simply make one massive blacklight, and set it high up in the cavern’s ceiling. Or, I could make basically streetlights with a lightstone and low-level blacklights in it. I should ask the Elder.
I left my workshop, and jogged off to find him. I popped my head back into the kitchens, and asked if Gon-rash had seen him.
“No, I’ve not seen him since he dropped you off this morning. By the way, I feel fine. The gravy doesn’t seem to have had any ill effects on me. Can I have the recipe?” he asked hopefully.
“Sure. Let me confer with the Elder first, and I’ll see about getting you the recipe,” I agreed.
Gon-rash nodded appreciatively, and turned back to his work. I left the kitchens, and headed back home, hoping to quiz Talah-ma’at about him.
When I returned, the doors were open, and I heard three laughing children playing with Elizabet and their mom.
“Hey guys. How is everything?”
“Mr. Ivor!” called three little voices, and I was immediately beset with three little boys who insisted on jumping onto me and latching on.
“Well, hello to you too! I hope you’re all being good.”
“We are, Mr. Ivor. Mommy and Miss Elizabet are having fun playing with us,” said Ahte-naah.
“Is that so?” I asked, looking at the two women in question.
“Yes, Ivor. It is true. Elizabet and I are having quite a good time playing with the boys. Your friend, Mr. Blainaut even came by to teach them and us a few things,” Talah-ma’at replied, coming over and plucking Ahte-ukum off my hip. “Come now, boys. I think Mr. Ivor would like to sit down.”
The other two boys dropped off me and scurried away. I came in and hugged Elizabet, giving her a soft kiss.
“I actually came to see you, Talah-ma’at,” I said, smiling at the shorter woman. “I need to find the Elder, and he has disappeared on me. I have some concerns about the new lights. Mostly, I don’t think it wise of me to go to every home and install them. It would use far too much of my energy. I have a couple of ideas, but I need to run them by him first.” She straightened with pride saying, “Of course! I can take you to where he likely is. He is a creature of habit, and I’ve come to know most of his habits. Let’s go.” She turned to the boys, and leaned over, her hands on her knees saying, “Now you three be good for Miss Elizabet, okay?”
I smiled at Elizabet, who was grinning ear to ear. “I’ll be back no later than dinner, Love.”
“Okay. We will see you then. Love you,” she said, giving me a small kiss.
“Love you too.” I turned and motioned for Talah-ma’at to lead the way.
We walked slowly towards the center of Haruma, talking amiably about the boys and life in the city.
“I still want Ahte-tan to become a hunter. He has the best mind for it, and looks to be following in the ash pile’s footsteps as far as size goes,” the smaller woman said.
“You really didn’t care overmuch for Talah-ahte, did you?” I asked.
“Not after his eyes turned,” she said. “After that, the Haarthuu sent him away to learn to control his fire. Since we had no way to send him to the other continent, he went into the wilderness. If he failed there, the resultant explosion wouldn't hurt anyone else,” she sighed adding, “I suppose that is when he hardened towards his people. He failed to understand what his death would do to the Haarthuu had he stayed within the cavern.” She pointedly looked at me. “What you did that day saved the lives of everyone out there. Myself included. I will never be able to thank you enough for that.” She patted my arm. “Anyway, after he returned, he only used me and some other women. He didn’t seem capable of loving us. The boys, however? He adored them. All three of them. At least, I thought he did. After he returned the day the boys were taken, he was inconsolable, and spent most of his time hunting. He always returned with something for the city. Now, we know why.” She shook her head. “I am glad, at least, that he takes after his father in regards to his kindness and morality.”
“I thought you said Talah-ahte was generally a terrible person?” I asked, confused.
“Not the ash pile, Ivor. You. You are their father. You have taught them far more about being a good person than the ash pile ever could. And I couldn’t ask for a better person to be their father,” she said happily. She grabbed my arm and hugged it to her.
“I, uh. Well. I suppose I am their father now. Ha ha,” awkward doesn’t even begin to describe how I felt. I patted her arm, saying, “I really don’t know how to say this, but there is someone in Haruma that is rather besotted with you.”
“Oh?” she narrowed her eyes, “And who might that be?”
“Well, I can tell you that you’ve seen a fair bit of him recently, and that he’s rather strong, capable, and hard-working. He’s also a bit shy,” I said, hoping she would make the connection to Kiri-tuk without me saying his name.
“Oh really? Well. I hope for his sake that he knows our courtship traditions. He needs to tell my father, first, of his intentions, then three of my closest friends. If he receives a favorable response from all of them, he may then tell me. If I respond positively, we can then court.” She rounded on me, standing in front of me, pointing a finger at me. “And there are very few people in Haruma that I would consider as a mate. Remember that, Ivor.”
“Uh, yeah. I got that. Loud and clear.” I swallowed, somewhat concerned. “May we continue?”
She held my gaze for another moment, then nodded once and continued on our way, as if nothing had happened.
Presently we came to a row of homes that looked just like all the others. How she could tell the difference, I will never understand, but she knew who lived where with unerring accuracy.
“And here we are. I will see if he is here.” She knocked on the door and got no response. She moved down to the next with the same results. After trying every door in the row, she looked around, sniffing the air. “He was here an hour ago. Let’s go to the Elder’s office.” She swiftly walked off in the direction of the empty quarter of Haruma.
“Out here? This is where I’ve set up my workshop,” I remarked, confused.
“Oh? Good. You’ll be near the Elder, and you’ll know where he likes to hide,” replied the scaly woman.
She led us down some empty streets, and I struggled to walk safely due to the dark. Talah-ma’at, however, was as sure-footed as could be, deftly walking around stone and stalagmites that I would have missed, had I not had a hand on her shoulder.
“Talah-ma’at? Are you able to see in the dark?” I asked.
“Hmm? Oh, this? Yes. All Lizardfolk are able to see in dim light. Are you not able to do so?”
“Only if I use a specific spell. The last time I used it, it gave me a headache, so I’ve not used it since,” I said as I rubbed my forehead in remembrance.
“Well, you may want to find some way to get light here, then. This area stays dark until people move back in,” she said, clarifying.
“Hold on, then. I’ll make something real quick,” I said, as I reached down and picked up a couple of stones. I Shaped one into the tube and capped holder shape of my blacklight, and the other, I Shaped to fit inside. I cast a bright Light spell on the stone, set it into the holder and Fused them together. Uncapping it, I now had a flashlight with a rather powerful beam directed in front of us.
“Amazing. Had I not seen it for myself, I’d have not believed it,” she remarked.
“Hmm? Oh this? No, don’t be impressed by this. This is honestly something I’ve been meaning to do for some time. I’ll show you something later that will truly be worthy of awe,” I said.
“If you say so, Ivor. The office is just over here.” She led the way up some stone stairs that hadn’t been used much in the last few years, judging by the rock chips there.
We were standing in front of several doors, one of which had a faint glow coming from underneath the door. I capped my flashlight and slipped it into a pocket as Talah-ma’at knocked on that door, and it was opened a few moments later by the Elder.
“Talah-ma’at! And Ivor! What can I do for you two?”
“Elder,” Talah-ma’at dipped her head slightly, “Ivor has some concerns about the task he is attempting. Ivor?”
“Yes. You see…” I explained my concerns to the Elder regarding the lights, as well as my two leading ideas for placing the blacklights.
“...and since I didn’t know how the Haarthuu would react to either a new massive structure over their heads or a plethora of poles that seemed to do nothing, I wanted to consult with you, first,” I concluded.
“Hmm. How bright will this light be?” he asked as he stroked his chin.
“Well, you won’t see the light. It is invisible” -I held up a hand to forestall any questions- “and I can show you what you might see. Just a moment.” I put my flashlight in my pocket and pulled out the blacklight. “Here is the blacklight. Talah-ma’at? If you would step into the darkness and close your eyes?” I asked.
Talah-ma’at shrugged and walked off down the row of doors, well outside the glow of the office. “Is this sufficient?”
“Perfect. Let me uncap this here,” I popped the cap off the blacklight and shone it in her direction.
Immediately, the beautiful patterns shone all over her body, outlining her arms, legs and hands, marking swirling patterns down her front and across her face.
The Elder gasped in surprise and stepped forward. “This is…Talah-ma’at, you are absolutely beautiful. I had no idea those patterns existed. Are we all like that? It would serve to understand why we individually like certain patterns over others. Amazing.”
I covered the blacklight and slipped it into my pocket. “I think you are all this colorful, just with different patterns. I’m not sure just yet how we can best provide this light to the Haarthuu, but I’m thinking on it. What do most people do all day? Crafting and working? I could put one in each of the crafting centers, bathing the people in the light all day, and afterwards, you’d go to bed. It’s the same with natural sunlight. However, the bone sickness may well run in families. Would that be a fair assumption?” At the Elder’s nod, I continued. “Perhaps we could simply target those families. Place one in their homes, and see how they do. I still think a massive light near the top of the cavern would be helpful as well. It would provide a low-level amount of the light you need at all times,” I mused.
The Elder and Talah-ma’at stood there watching me mull this over. I was mumbling about fixtures and intensities, and the two of them stood there, rather amused until Talah-ma’at stopped me with a gentle hand on my arm.
“Ivor, I believe you’re overthinking this. A single large, intense light will likely solve most of our problems. We could use something small and handheld in our medical center to treat acute cases, assuming you’re correct. Both the Elder and I recognize your desire to help us, and we love you for it. What we would not love is for you to work yourself silly in order to do it,” she said, her golden eyes meeting mine.
“She is correct, Ivor. Help us, but not at the expense of your health. If these lights do what you believe they will, that alone will be of great benefit to us. Even as a single, large light at the top of the cavern. The smaller, more portable lights for the medics would be of immense worth by themselves. You are ambitious, my friend,” the Elder said softly, his hand resting on my other arm.
Beset on both sides by the kindness of the Haarthuu, I relented, and allowed them to persuade me to do the relatively smaller work. I sighed, and Duplicated the portable blacklight four times, keeping one in my pocket, and handed them to Talah-ma’at.
“Get these to the medics, then. This will hopefully be enough for a while,” I said. Turning to the Elder, I continued, “And I’d like to get started on the large lamp for the cavern ceiling. Where is the best place for it, and how soon would you like it?”
Tala-ma’at nodded, saying, “I will leave you two to your task, and get these to the medics. Afterwards, I shall head home. I will see you there, Ivor.” With that, she headed off.
The Elder took hold of my arm, and led me down the stairs, and back towards the feast hall. “I think this is the best place for the light. It is fairly central to everyone’s path, and shouldn’t be terribly difficult for you to get to” -he looked up at the distant ceiling, almost completely obscured by shadow, even at midday- “the top, but I still don’t know how you’re going to-”
I had started running toward the wall before he had finished, focusing on my boots and whispering the Spider Climb spell, and leapt to the wall. I continued my run up the wall, and reached the ceiling in short order.
“Like this!” I yelled down to the Elder, who simply stood there, mouth agape. I walked around, trying to find the most central point of the ceiling.
“Ivor! Go about ten paces to your right!” the Elder called up. “No! Your other right!” As I moved in the intended direction, he called “Yes! Right there! I think that should be fine!”
Kiri-tuk had wandered over, attracted by the Elder’s yelling. “Uh, Elder? Are you feeling well?” he asked, concern etched on his face.
“Hmm? Oh, yes. I’m fine. Why?” the Elder replied.
“Well, who are you yelling at?”
“Hmm? Oh, I’m talking to Ivor. He’s up on the ceiling, trying to do some work.”
“Ivor? I don’t….” Kiri-tuk trailed off as he saw me up there, waving at him. “Wow. How did he get up there?”
“Oh, he ran up the wall and ceiling. Strangest thing, too,” replied the Elder, in a casual tone.
“He ran up the… What? I don’t…” Kiri-tuk pinched the bridge of his nose. “You know what? I’m going to stop asking. That man does things I can’t even fathom,” he said, defeated.
“Smart. I gave up after his ordeal with Talah-ahte,” replied the Elder.
While they conversed, I looked around for some suitable stone to turn into the lights I was looking for. Finding nothing promising, I decided I would have to improvise. I selected a sturdy stalactite, Shaped a seat out of it, Strengthened the entire structure, got myself situated and got to work.
I conjured several Hands, and began to Shape a massive hemisphere, roughly twenty feet in diameter, out of the surrounding stone, leaving half of it embedded in the rock with a sharp channel to guide runoff away from it. I repeated the process in a small scale all the way around the sphere, making thirty-six beach ball sized hemispheres all the way around it. These would serve as marker lights for the blacklight. I touched one, and made it a light comparable to the light from one of their moons.
“Elder! Is that too bright?” I called down.
“No, it looks fine!” he and Kiri-tuk both replied.
“Okay! I’ll finish the others, and you let me know!”
At their affirmations, I continued with the other thirty-five. My stomach began to protest around twenty, but I went ahead and finished. Once complete, I dug into my Bag and ate some dried meat. The next steps would be the hardest and would take the most out of me.
I concentrated on the large, central sphere and cast the blacklight spell on it with an intensity much higher than I had before. I wanted to make certain the light would reach the floor. Looking down, I saw the faint coloring appear on Kiri-tuk, and knew it was intense enough. However, I immediately got dizzy and had to grab my seat to maintain my position. As my vision swam, I hurriedly reached into my bag and got more meat. I ate until I stopped feeling shaky, and only then did I complete the spells with water and oil repellent. I ate a bit more and in my clouded mind, I thought the distance wasn’t too great, and that I’d simply drop down from my perch.
So I did.
About a millisecond after my ass left my perch, I realized how stupid this was. Panicking, my mind blanked as the ground rushed towards me alarmingly fast.

2023.02.02 22:45 perceptionist808 Laptop recommendations $700 or less.

I'm looking for recommendations on a affordable PC laptop. Ideally < $700 that can easily handle Lightroom and Photoshop as well as a good enough screen with adequate sRGB coverage. I'm ok with anything between about 13-16" screen size. My LR and PS usage is mainly for photography editing. Now a days I just do a little bit of freelancing and some personal stuff for my family so I don't need a crazy workhorse computer. Yes I know I can buy a good separate monitor, but most of my casual usage is just on the couch or dining table as I don’t' have any dedicated desk space or home office. Besides using it for LPS the rest would be just for surfing the internet and streaming.
Recommendations would be appreciated and TIA!
