One of the most exquisite countries in Europe, which saw a footfall of 100 million tourists in 2020, must be on the list of every travel enthusiast. Known for its language, cuisine, culture, and fashion, the popularity of France is increasing day by day. The best thing about this country is the wide range of experiences it offers. It doesn’t matter if you want to spend your vacation relaxing in a countryside vineyard sipping on some wine or want to go underwater and reunite with nature, France has everything.
Another important thing to know about the country is the fact that it is well connected through roads, and if you want to experience the real France, it should be a point to take a road trip. You can hire a car and get to experience the countryside as authentically as possible. It will not only help you in being truly free from arrival and departure timings but can also lead you to unplanned and impromptu adventures. And those are the kinds of stories that you will want your grandchildren to know!
Let us take a look at some of the destinations in France that you will regret missing –
  1. Paris – Well, no brownie points for guessing this one. Also known as the City of Light, this city has been a crucial part of the modern history of the world. Poets, painters, musicians, most of those who revolutionised art and literature have walked through the streets of Paris. In this French city, love is always in the air, along with the aroma of baked goods and perfume. The Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral are of great historical importance. The Louvre Museum has some of the greatest works of art in the world. The Château de Versailles is just a one and a half hour car ride away from Paris and without any argument one of the grandest architectural pieces in the world.
  2. The island of Corsica – To the south of France lies the beautiful island of Corsica. You might have come across this one if you were an Asterix fan.The city of Bastia is famous for its streets, cafes, churches, scenic beauty, and markets. Take a day to walk the beautiful metropolitan area to blend in with locals and absorb the beautiful warm Sun. Take a tour of the Balagne villages which are just a 20 minute drive away. Catching a sunset in the village of Occi can be a magical experience for you.
  3. Nice – The foundation of the city takes us back to the time of the Greeks. It is one of the biggest attractions for international tourists. Nice is widely known by Henri Matisse, the famous painter who lived and worked in this beautiful French city. There are several things that you can do in Nice, such as taking a bus tour around the city or dedicating a day to museums. However, to experience Nice in its truest sense, you must take the cruise from Cannes to Monte Carlo.
  4. Bordeaux – It’s not difficult to locate this name, right? If you are a good old wine lover, you have surely seen Bordeaux many times. This quaint port city is a massive wine hub that reportedly produced 440 million litres of wine in 2020. Apart from the obvious attraction of lovely Bordeaux, this place offers peaceful countryside that is perfect both for you and your gram. Spend a weekend in the region tasting some wine and basking in the sun in one of the gardens that run along the riverside.
  5. Normandy – Although this northern region has a history of injustice, war, and suffering, it is surely a place that you would not want to miss. The Normandy coast gained popularity during the Second World War and has since been one of the major attractions for tourists with historical interest. The region has expansive beaches lined with white-chalk cliffs. The grandeur of the landscape is absolutely breathtaking and sublime. Guess that is the reason why Claude Monet spent a good deal of his life and painted some of his best works in Normandy.
  6. The Alps – If you are an adrenaline junkie, you should not miss the opportunity to visit the part of the Alps that falls under the jurisdiction of France. Outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding, mountaineering, and paragliding are some of the activities that will account for some of the central experiences of your life.
  7. Loire Valley – While France equates to romance, not every place in the country will be able to offer you the kind of privacy that you might expect with your loved one. Loire Valley is one such place that will give you the chance to escape with your partner. The serene nature of the valley and the beautiful accommodation options this place has is ideal for a romantic getaway or a honeymoon. It has also been recognised as a World Heritage site by UNESCO.
  8. Dune du Pilat – When in France, there is no reason to miss Europe’s tallest sand dunes. Located in the Arcachon Bay area, it attracts a huge number of tourists every year. You will not only be shocked at the sight of the high dunes, but you must also climb to its peak to see the breathtaking view.
  9. Mont St. Michel, the grand abbey on this island located near Normandy, is a treat for both adults and children. It is said that this beautiful structure was the inspiration behind the famous children’s tale Rapunzel and it also inspired the creative directors of the Disney movie Tangled. Don’t deprive yourself of this beauty when you’re in France.
    Things to do in France
France is more than simply a tourism destination. This lovely nation provides a plethora of things to do and activities.
France not only boasts strong arts, culture, and architecture, but it also offers a diverse cuisine. While most of the lesser-known towns have recently gained a lot of attention, Paris remains one of the most-visited cities in the world. Enjoy the capital by riding along the Seine, circling the Arc de Triomphe, or driving to Versailles.
If you’ve always wanted to visit the most romantic city in the world, driving is the most liberating option. Plan your own schedule and have greater freedom in deciding how to experience France without the hassle of commuting.
These are just a few of France’s most popular tourist destinations. This country has a lot to offer in terms of places to visit and things to see. Being a country of serenity, love, romance, and wine, France is one of the best destinations to visit. The spring months of April and May are the best time to visit France.
If you are planning to go around the country on the road, you must remember that you should possess an international driver’s permit. This will give you the ability to rent a vehicle and drive around to reach your preferred spots.
Although almost all of these tourist destinations are accessible by public transit, it is always a good idea to rent a car as a tourist or foreign visitor. This lets you travel according to your desires, making as many pauses as you wish, even for something as simple as a nice little selfie and making memories, without the driver constantly pressuring you to hurry or disguising their annoyance each time you ask them to stop.
An International Driving Licence France, on the other hand, is a perfectly straightforward answer to this tiny problem that threatens to ruin your vacation mood while in France. With the help of ITCA, you may apply for an international driving licence and obtain your international driver permit France in only a few easy clicks. You may visit these tourist destinations whenever and wherever you choose with your international driving permit in hand. The land of serenity, love, romance, and wine is waiting for you to be explored. Go ahead and book a vacation in France!
France Driving guide
France is a lovely and diverse country with a fascinating history and culture. France is a famous tourist destination for visitors worldwide, thanks to renowned sites such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and Notre Dame Cathedral. Enjoy delectable French food, world-renowned wines, and picturesque landscapes. France offers something for everyone, from the gorgeous beaches of the French Riviera to the snow-capped summits of the Alps. Whether you enjoy history, art, or outdoor sports, France will have a memorable effect on you. Whether you are visiting France for a short or long time, having an international driver’s licence and a local driver’s licence will provide you with the finest experience.

Car rental in France

If you want to make your vacation as easy as possible but cannot bring your own car, renting a car is an alternative. Finding where to rent a car in France or researching all rental cars might be difficult, but fortunately, car rental guides are widely available.

Required Documentation

Car rental firms have terms and restrictions, so read them before proceeding. The legal criteria for driving a rental automobile in France vary widely; however, the following are the typical requirements:
● Current local driver’s licence.
International driver’s licence according to UN Conventions 1949 or 1968
● Passport.
● For pre-booking, use an international debit or credit card.

THE TYPE OF VEHICLE

Choose from various rental cars to match your personality and holiday mood. Rent a minivan or an economy automobile for a more elegant and cost-effective journey. Compact and family automobiles, which can carry more passengers and luggage, are suitable for family and group travel. In France, you may also hire a premium car as you wish.

THE EXPENSE OF RENTING AN AUTOMOBILE

Car rental in France is less expensive than in any other country. You may rent a car for as little as $12 per day. However, the cost varies based on the type of vehicle rented.
French traffic regulations
Now that you know how to get your rental car, the following section will teach you about the driving regulations in France. This will help you adjust quickly and drive like a Frenchman. Check out the driving regulations and other important facts about driving in France below. Drivers should be mindful of roadside hazards, speed limits, and other limitations. So, before you drive in France, figure out what is unique to you and do a car maintenance check.

DRUNKEN DRIVING IN FRANCE

This is one of the most crucial traffic regulations to remember. Private drivers are allowed a maximum legal blood alcohol level of 0.05%. At the same time, the rate for buses, coaches, and novice drivers with less than three years of experience is limited to 0.02%. Police can perform random breath tests, and such tests, as well as drug testing, are required if a motorist is involved in an accident or commits a significant offence.
Parking regulations
Parking is permitted only on the right side of two-lane roads and both sides of large one-way streets. Yellow lines or street signs indicate restrictions and dashed yellow lines indicate that parking is not permitted. Parking metres and machines that accept credit or debit card payments are indicated by street signage.
Your car will be towed and seized if you park illegally. You must go to your local police station, pay the fine, and then release the car.
Horning caution
At specific times of the day, a horn must immediately inform other road users. In France, you must flash your low lights to warn of an approaching vehicle from dusk until morning. Horns are absolutely forbidden in all metropolitan areas, save in extreme cases. Horns with several tones, sirens, and whistles are also forbidden. You should also constantly use low beams.

FINES AND FORFEITURE RULES

The police can fine drivers up to €750 on the spot for breaking traffic laws. The police have the authority to seize the car until payment is made. You can pay in Euro cash, French bank checks, or traveller’s checks. The car and driver’s licence may be seized in specific situations. You should know everything if you don’t want your domestic driver’s licence seized in France.
  1. If you are stopped or checked by the police and do not stop throughout the course of the check,
  2. Driving without a valid driver’s licence or insurance
  3. exceeding the speed limit by more than 50 km/h.
  4. Multiple offences
  5. in the event of a hit-and-run.
  6. Operating a vehicle with the incorrect category licence, which does not cover that vehicle.
In the above scenario, your vehicle may already be the property of the French government.
Speed limit
Remember that France’s national speed restrictions are measured in kilometres and meters. All road signs and lane markers are in metric units. The speed limit is 130 kilometres per hour. The speed limit on non-urban highways is 80 km/h, whereas, in urban areas, it is 50 km/h. Drivers with EU licences who exceed the speed limit by more than 40 km/h will have their licences revoked.
Seat belt legislation
Seat belts must be worn at all times by both the driver and the passenger. The driver must ensure that all passengers, especially those under 18, wear seat belts for adequate vehicle support. If a child under age 10 is seen sitting in the front seat without a seatbelt or in a child’s seat, the driver faces a €135 fine. Adult passengers who crash without wearing a helmet or a seat belt will be fined an extra 135 euros.
Legal driving age
According to French highway regulations, one must be at least 18 years old to drive. Generally comparable to other countries, the driver must be at least 21 years old to qualify for car rentals. Some rental firms may rent to people at 18, but waiting until the minimum rental conditions are met is preferable. If you are under the legal driving age, do not drive on French roads, especially on slopes.
Overtaking rule
Overtaking is a right-hand traffic concept, whereas overtaking is a left-hand traffic principle. On slow-moving highways, you can overtake other cars on the right side in some circumstances when heavy traffic limits a specific lane. Ensure there are no incoming cars that might cause an accident when passing.
The driving side
Like most other countries, the French drive on the right side of the road. If you have a rental car and have never driven on the right side previously, you should practise driving it before you go.

Drive as though you are a native of France.

Tourists are permitted to drive in France. Driving in France requires an IDP, or international driving permit. A verified translation must accompany all valid domestic driver’s licences for tourists if they want to drive a car in France. The International Driving Permit, a legal document translation, is available at e-itca.org if you want to drive on your own in France. When driving in a foreign nation, you must have an IDP. E-ITCA.org also provides an international driving permit France with express shipping globally.

TACTICS IN SLOT MACHINES
These strategies can help you enhance your chances of success and save dollars that you might normally forfeit, but keep in mind that the percentages are still stacked toward you. Everyone who claims their tactics can help you score big is only offering you what you wish to believe.
Recognize that your chances of success are much higher when users play anything other than machines.
SO HERE ARE SOME OPTIONS:
PLAY GAMES ONLINE RATHER THAN IN A LAND-BASED GAMBLING.
Because internet casinos do not have the huge expenditures of infrastructure and actual machines, video casinos are often looser than property casinos. Refunds in land casinos are typically about percent, but in Vegas, they are around 97.4%.
The drawback is that visiting a physical casino requires a lot of effort, but slot games are only a few taps away. Although with superior odds, if you gamble multiple times as much internet as you'd do in a land gambling, you'll inevitably lose more. Define and keep to lost limitations! You may even play with fictitious cash to prevent loss.
GAMBLE IN THE MORE LENIENT SLOTS.
These same casinos on the Rock Band and in North Las Vegas have the better payouts 96 percent in Vegas. Following that are the additional off-strip casino, midtown 94 percent, and the Promenade 91 percent. Vegas, Nevada is frequently towards the top of the ranking for the greatest payouts in the United States, while the majority of the nation has very poor slot chances. If you fall into one of these categories, you should either stream content or upgrade to a better system.
BEWARE THE MEANEST CLUBS.
Altogether terrestrial casinos wage not as good as Bovada, but some are especially corrupt.
LAX
in the Magician's slot poll, runway slots came in the dead bottom. Also, if you win a large payout and have to delay a check payout, you may decide between losing your trip and abandoning the prize, which is a win scenario.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CASINOS
The greater the chances, the finer the gambling. The Palazzo came dead last in genuine casinos in the Wizard's poll, with Flamingo, Mandalay Bay, and Caesars Paradise not far behind. As previously said, avoid the Strip in favor of smaller gambling.
HANDY SHOPS AND FOOD OUTLETS
Because their poker stars are the closest in town, the slots are probably definitely configured in the same manner.
PORTS AND OCEAN LINERS
Since there is no tournament didn't drive out and head to the slot machine next door—they don't have to give fair probabilities. The ships are aware that they have a loyal following and adjust their chances appropriately. The lowest roulette chances I've ever seen were on a ship connecting Europe, implying that the terminals were more or less definitely identical.
GAMBLE WITH THE SMALLEST QUANTITY THAT'S STILL ENJOYABLE FOR ONESELF
The farther you wager, the further money you will forfeit. It's as easy as that. So can wager as little as you like and have a good time. However, if you merely stake a dime at a session, most hotels will still offer you complimentary beverages.
SELECT THE LARGEST PRICE OF EQUIPMENT YOU CAN AFFORD
Relatively high devices typically pay more. The key here is not to wager more because you're gaming a larger game. Rather than just playing Ten lines for 5 dollars on a 1 cent device, play two lines for 5 dollars on a 5-penny computer system.
SELECT RETINAL SLOTS VS CONVENTIONAL MACHINES
Winnings appear significantly more often on traditional slots than on online slots. During campaign mode, an electronic machine slot reaches its prize once every couple of weeks on average, but a slot game requires close to a decade. And the greater your chances of striking gold, the greater your chances of walking away with winners.
PICK GAMES WITH THE LESSER PRIZES ON AUTOMATED SLOTS
The lower the prize, the simpler it is to earn, improving your odds of winning. This method does not work with slot machines since the prize chances are nearly always extremely lengthy and unconnected to the size of the prize.
AVOID YOUR BETS ON PROGRESSIVE PRIZE GAMES
A large amount of each wager on machines with large progressive jackpots is used to feed the meter. On Big money, for an instance, ten cents of every dollar are spent to raise the meter. Big money yields just approximately 78 percentage points on usual, apart from the prize. When you have to play a large progressive seek a 2 different machine rather than a three-different machine, and 0.05 dollars or 0.25-dollar machine rather than a 1.00-dollar machine.
MAKE UTILIZE A SLOTTED CARD
Take your slot game card at the Game's Association desk. Whereas the return benefits for gambling credits are normally tiny, using a slot match says that the casino could offer complimentary food and will frequently mail you coupons for complimentary or heavily reduced hotels, which might save you some bucks.
Despite common belief, utilizing a slot card has no bearing on whether or not you won. This card mechanism is fully independent of the RNG that determines where the reels stop. Putting my slot cards in, I've won major prizes.
STAY AWAY FROM STAR AND LICENSED SLOTS
Because slots predicated on a personality, film, or television program must cover license costs, they pay out a few points higher just under blank cards.
GAME DEVICES THAT GUARANTEE A CERTAIN SIGNIFICANT RATE OF RETURN
Select devices that are indicated as earning a specified higher proportion if you are able to find them. This nearly never occurs at land gambling since companies don't want to reveal such information, but it does occur on occasion.
"STRIKE AND FLEE" SOMEHOW DOESN'T FUNCTION
Common tactics recommend switching to this other player after a certain period of time or after receiving some good rewards Since each spin is unpredictable, these strategies are ineffective. Recent outcomes have no impact on future outcomes.
SOFTWARE DEALERS FACE A THOUSAND CHALLENGE
It irritates me that certain individuals peddle "having won online slot tactics" the Online to the unwary. It should go without saying that if an individual truly understood how to routinely beat gambling machines, they ought not to offer that expertise for 19.95 dollars. Tragically, some individuals continue to be deceived.
Throughout the years, I've given a thousand dollars reward to any ‘empowered who can demonstrate that their classification accomplishes everything they claim it does. I'm hoping to demonstrate that those techniques are useless so that no software has always prepared to accept my offer.

2023.02.02 05:51 assessment_bot [2 None] [September 09 2020] Mooney M20R, Weston/ FL USA

NTSB Preliminary Narrative

On September 9, 2020, at 0935 eastern daylight time, a Mooney M20R airplane, N120GX, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Weston, Florida. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to the pilot, the airplane had 6.5 quarts of oil (8 quarts total capacity) and 65 gallons of fuel onboard before departure for the 35-minute flight from Naples to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. About 20 minutes into the flight, at an altitude of 3,500 ft mean seal level, he “heard a loud pop and the prop sputtered and the engine started losing power.” He noticed that the oil pressure had decreased from 58-60 psi to 0 psi; however, all other engine gauges, including the oil temperature, were normal except for a “larger than normal draw on the battery.” About 30 seconds later, part of the engine exited through the top of the engine cowling, and the engine and propeller stopped completely. The pilot performed a successful forced landing to the right shoulder of an interstate highway where the airplane came to a stop. As the pilot and passenger prepared to disembark, a truck struck the airplane’s left wing from behind, and the airplane spun around 180°. Examination of the airplane at the accident site by a Federal Aviation Administration inspector revealed that the airplane sustained substantial damage to the left aileron, the left wing trailing edge forward of the aileron, and the inboard trailing edges of both the left and right elevators. A hole was present on the top left side of the engine cowling and in the engine case near the base of the No. 6 cylinder. Metal debris, including a damaged connecting rod, its separated cap, a piston wristpin, a valve lifter, and crankcase fragments were found in the engine’s oil pan.
Examination of the engine revealed discoloration/thermal damage to one of the crankshaft main bearings, one of the crankshaft connecting rod journals, and two of the connecting rods (and bearings) at their crankshaft ends. The discoloration and damage were consistent with a lack of lubrication. The examination found no anomalies with the engine oil pump, and no blocked oil passages were found in the crankshaft.
The pilot/owner reported that on the previous day, he completed a long cross-country trip (four flights over four days, totaling about 16 hours). Over the course of the last two flights of that trip (which totaled about 7.25 flight hours), the engine used about 3.5 quarts of oil, or about 1 quart every 2.07 hours. When he added 2 quarts of oil after completing the trip, which brought the oil level to 6.5 quarts, he noted that the oil consumption “seemed to be on the high side.” Previously, he had added oil prior to two other legs of the trip, and the lowest oil level observed was “just below 6 quarts.” He recalled the recent oil additions from memory as he did not keep a written log of every addition. He did not report observing any oil leaks. The accident flight occurred the next day, which was a planned trip to get the oil changed. He intended to ask the maintainer to determine if the oil consumption was normal or to determine a reason for it, if not.
The airplane was equipped with electronic primary and multifunction displays, which recorded flight data to an on-board memory card. A review of the data from 34 previous flights revealed that during cruise flight, the engine oil pressure was typically between 60 and 65 psi, and consistent. Any fluctuations in cruise flight were normally concurrent with a change in engine rpm or oil temperature. Figure 1 shows the engine rpm, oil pressure and temperature for a typical flight.
Figure 1 - Engine Oil Pressure - Typical Flight
Beginning with the 3rd previous flight (which occurred 6 days prior to the accident), the recorded data for engine oil pressure deviated from the preceding typical trends. During the 3rd and 2nd previous flights, the oil pressure began to decrease about halfway through the flight, without an accompanying change in oil temperature or engine rpm. Additionally, during the decreasing trend, the oil pressure data became “noisy”, exhibited by high frequency fluctuations in the recorded pressure. These trends continued for the remainder of both these flights. The decrease in pressure was gradual, dropping 15-20 psi over about 90 minutes, reaching about 45 psi by the end of the cruise. A review of the data from 31 flights prior to this time revealed that the oil pressure was not below 60 psi during the cruise phase. Figure 2 shows the data from the 2nd previous flight.
Oil Pressure: Decreasing Trend and Fluctuations Begin
Figure 2 – Engine Oil Pressure - Data from 2nd Previous Flight Prior to Accident Flight
During the flight prior to the accident, the oil pressure did not reach the typical 60-65 psi during cruise, and it decreased throughout the entire flight. About 1/3 of the way through the flight, the pressure fell into the yellow range of the oil pressure gauge (10-30 psi). It continued to decrease until it briefly reached the lower red range (<10 psi) twice, near the end of the flight. Figure 3 shows the data from the previous flight.
Figure 3 Engine Oil Pressure - Data from Flight Prior to Accident Flight
During the accident flight, the oil pressure was generally more consistent with a typical flight, with a decrease (about 7-8 psi) over the 3 minutes prior to the loss of engine power. Figure 4 shows the data from the accident flight.
Figure 4 Engine Oil Pressure - Data from Accident Flight
Engine Instruments
Oil pressure and other engine indications are displayed on the airplane’s multifunction display (MFD). While this display is used for many different functions, engine data are typically depicted on the left side of the screen as shown in an exemplar image in figure 5. In some cases, such as when using the ‘lean’ function, the oil pressure gauge is not depicted. According to the MFD pilot’s guide:
“When unsafe operating conditions occur, the corresponding readouts flash to indicate cautions and warnings.”
The pilot’s guide did not specify whether the oil pressure indicator would flash if the oil pressure value fell within the yellow range.
The airplane was not equipped with a secondary oil pressure gauge.
Oil Pressure Gauge
Figure 5 - Exemplar MFD Display (Mooney M20M)
A review of the engine maintenance logbook revealed that the engine was manufactured May 2006, was installed when the airplane was manufactured, and had accrued a total of 1,166 hours. It had not been overhauled. According to the engine manufacturer’s overhaul manual, the recommended time between overhauls was 2,000 hours or 12 years, whichever comes first. The manual states in part:
“Regardless if the engine has been operated regularly or has been in storage; gaskets, seals, and synthetic and natural rubber goods deteriorate over time. Replace or overhaul the engine upon accumulating the operating hours specified in Table 6-1 [2,000 hours], or twelve (12) years after being placed in service, whichever occurs first.”
The most recent maintenance was an oil change, about 38 flight hours prior to the accident flight, on July 10, 2020. The oil filter was opened and examined at that time with no anomalies noted.
The most recent annual inspection was performed about 81 flight hours prior to the accident flight, on May 29, 2020, with no anomalies noted in the logbook entry. That logbook entry included a note that the oil filter was cut open and inspected, with no debris or metal detected. However, a separate supplemental document for that same inspection entitled “Mooney International Corporation 50-Hou100-HouAnnual Maintenance Inspection Guide” noted in one section “Dirty Oil – gunk in filter”. The remarks section at the end of the document read “oil was awfully dirty, filter was not clean, gunk like substance in filter folds (element).” The cylinder compression test values did not vary significantly between the previous annual inspection (May 2019) and the most recent annual inspection, except for cylinder number 2, which increased by 20 psi.
A review of the last 10 oil changes prior to the accident flight (including the two noted above) revealed oil change intervals that ranged from 21 to 46 hours. Of these, there were no other anomalies noted about the oil condition or mention of any debris found in the oil filter. However, the records for 5 of these oil changes did not specifically indicate if the oil filter was opened and examined.

NTSB Final Narrative

The pilot completed a multi-day cross-country trip on the day prior to the accident flight during which he noted an increase in the engine’s oil consumption. The purpose of the accident flight was a planned trip for a scheduled oil change, where he also intended to ask the maintainer about the oil consumption. Prior to departing on the accident flight, he performed a preflight inspection and noted that the engine oil level was about 6.5 quarts. While in cruise flight about 20 minutes after departure, the engine lost all power. The pilot performed a successful forced landing to the right shoulder of an interstate highway, where the airplane came to a stop. As the pilot and passenger prepared to disembark, a truck struck the airplane’s left wing from behind, resulting in substantial damage to the wing. The pilot reported that the oil level after the accident was between 6 and 6.5 quarts.
A review of data recorded by the airplane’s avionics system revealed that during two previous legs of the cross-country trip the oil pressure began to gradually decrease and fluctuate about midway through each flight. During the last leg, the oil pressure decreased continuously throughout the entire flight. During the accident flight, the oil pressure remained in the green range until just prior to the loss of engine power.
During the most recent annual inspection, the engine oil was noted as excessively dirty and contaminants (“gunk”) were found in the oil filter pleats. Contaminated oil is commonly caused by an excessive interval between oil changes and/or excessive wear of the piston rings, neither of which appear to have occurred in this case. The oil change intervals were consistently within the manufacturer’s specifications and there was no significant loss of cylinder compression (a potential indicator of piston ring wear) noted during the last annual inspection. There were no anomalies noted with the oil and no debris noted in the oil filter during the following oil change, which was the last change before the accident flight.
Although the damage to the engine components was consistent with thermal damage due to a lack of lubrication, given the reported oil quantity after the accident and during the previous trip, as well as the gradual decreases in the recorded oil pressure on the previous flights, it is unlikely that the damage resulted from too little oil in the sump. The gradually decreasing oil pressure during the previous flights suggests a possible problem with the oil pump, an oil leak or restriction, or excessive oil temperature, no evidence of which was found during the examination. It is possible that the overheating and subsequent damage to the bearings began during one of the previous flights when the oil pressure decreased. The reasons for the decreased oil pressure and the increased oil consumption could not be determined.
The engine had never been overhauled, and at the time of the accident had reached just over half of the recommended operating hours between overhauls. However, it was 14 years old, which is 2 years past the recommended calendar time between overhauls. Had the engine been overhauled at the recommended calendar time, it is likely that the issue with the lubricating system could have been addressed or prevented.

NTSB Probable Cause Narrative

A total loss of engine power because of the overheating and failure of the connecting rod bearings due to a lack of lubrication for reasons that could not be determined.

2023.02.02 03:59 ApprehensiveTie8526 7 days in Caribbean and Bahamas

Going to Belize, Raton, and Costa Maya on MSC Davina. Trying to see if anyone has gone because while all the shiny excursions look awesome, if we do them all it'll cost nearly as much as the cruise itself. Hopefully someone can tell me if any of these ports we can just get off the ship, maybe walk to a beach, shopping, or exploring. I know not all ports have this option.

For reference I am 31F, train in Orlando, FL.
Training I trained for this coming off of Chicago '22. Chicago was my first marathon in over 3 years and while I was excited to get in with the raffle, I don't think I fully prepared myself mentally for the race/took it seriously enough. I felt great until mile 22 and then crashed and finished 3:30:55 - 55 sec short of a BQ but still 19 min faster than my first marathon in 2015 (Pittsburgh) and 34 min faster than my 2019 marathon (La Donna, Jacksonville).
I've been working with Mckirdy Trained for 3 years now. This training block my coach upped my overall weekly mileage averaging in the mid 50s with two weeks a mile or so off of 60. Ran 6 days a week, 3 days had some sort of speed work in them with 1 of the days being the long run. VDOT had my goal marathon pace at 7:32 and most of my long run speed sessions had miles between 7:30 - 7:50.
Pre-race I really really wanted to break 3:30 to BQ. Miami would not have been my choice to do so due to the heat but I had gotten a deferral in 2020 and long story short, either had to run it or lose the money. I knew it would be hot but was optimistic leading up thinking "it can't be that bad" but each day the starting temp for the race creeped up until the day of - 74 at the start. I train in Orlando so I'm familiar with the heat but that doesn't mean I enjoy it or perform well in it. Plus this training block had had great weather, most runs were 50-70 degrees max.
Knowing it would be warm plus knowing I bonked at the end of Chicago made me take prep a lot more seriously than Chicago. I upped carbs, fluid and salt the days before the race. I memorized the course/aid station expectations. I planned to take a GU+ salt/caffeine pill every 30 min. And what I think was the most important factor - I worked on my mental game. I KNEW I had a faster marathon in me and believed it. I came up with mantras to turn to during the race: "Relax and Roll", "I am a fighter" "I know I can" "I like this GU!!"
Oh I also ran this race for the first time in "super shoes" - Saucony Endorphin Speed 3
Ate bagel+ banana +almond butter + high dextrin with EAA drink and a salt tab an hour before the start. Grabbed a little baggie of ice at the hotel before leaving. Not much but I was taking anything to cool me down. And was able to pee 30 min before this race, unlike Chicago where I had to take a break on the course.
Race
Miles 1-6
6 am start. I paired up with the 3:25 group thinking it would give me a buffer if I had to slow down and still hit 3:30. UGH what a crowded start!! The first 3 miles felt like all focus was on dodging people. Cool to start before sunrise and see the cruise ships off the bridges.
Miles 7-8
Felt a little GI upset. Started to doubt myself a little bit with the pace picking up to make up for the early miles. Turned my music on to give me a boost (had my phone in my sports bra and played it out loud).
Miles 8-16
The half marathoners have broken away and the course is much more open. I'm in the zone, grateful for my pacer and the crew around me.
Miles 17-23
Sun is OUT. Thankfully most of the course is shaded. I stay focused on the miles and keep repeating my mantras, listening to my music and my pacer (shoutout to Derek!!). I consider going faster but don't want the heat to overtake me.
Miles 24-26.2
Now I KNOW I'm going to finish strong and feel confident enough to break away from my pacer. I felt like a rockstar coming in knowing I had smashed my goal. I didn't realize until hours after the race that my last mile was the fastest - 6:33!!!
Post-race WOW WOW WOW!! I did it!! I did it despite the nasty heat!! I got my BQ!! And I can tell that I clearly have a faster marathon in me and I cannot wait to see what that is! I got 3rd in my AG and 8th women overall which is insane to me! Part of me is like "You should have ran faster" but I'm happy with staying strong and not trying to kill myself in that heat/humidity.
I plan to apply for Boston and hope to get in for 2024. Other goals to work on will be to break 20 min in the 5K and bring my 10K/half time down.
Do I recommend the Miami marathon? Absolutely not lol. It's definitely a race that cares most about the half marathoners. But I will say the medal was pretty dope.
(First race report - tried to follow the rules as best I could!)

2023.02.01 20:38 flashoverphotography Documentation Question

Hello,
Quick question, hopefully able to get some answers. We're going on a Carnival cruise to the Caribbean in a few weeks, same port of departure and return.
We're in the process of trying to get a passport but we don't believe it will be here on time. We have a certified birth certificate, current state drivers license and certified marriage certificate all physically in our possession.
The only stipulation is the surname(last name) on the BC and DL are two different names, will the MC bridge that gap for when we try to board the cruise line since the two required documents have different last names?

Example is...
Drivers license: Jane Smith (Smith being married surname)
Birth certificate: Jane Doe (Doe being maiden surname)
Marriage certificate: Jane Doe legally married to John Smith

This reason has caused a delay in getting the passport but now we're wondering if this is going to created a similar issue boarding the cruise?
Thank you for any help.

2023.02.01 20:25 Imjustadumbbutt (A much delayed) Fantasy Fest 2022 Trip report

Sorry it took me awhile to post this, I started it in November but life has been chaotic and I wanted to make sure it was a through report!
"Mardi Gras on steroids", "Spring Break for 50 year old's", those are the two of the main statements I heard that described Fantasy Fest in Key West, Florida, a 10 day festival that occurs usually the week before Halloween.
Fantasy Fest has been on my bucket list for almost 10 years now and I finally had the opprtunity to go and have seen it as a idea for people in the LS to attend where they could be themselves so I hope this post helps those who are interested in the event. Feel free to leave questions or comment if you where there this year or previous years.
First off there was a "scare" about this year Fantasy Fest as recently a lot of non locals have moved to the Keys and don't like the idea of Fantasy Fest. There was a campaign to tone it down and make it more family friendly. In response they eliminated at least one event (Naked Zombie Bike Ride) and this year did not have a tab for "Little Black Book" events on the main page which listed all the risqué events, instead one had to visit alternative ticketing sites like keystix and eventbrite to find those events which I feel greatly diminished the turn out for those events. The Key West Chamber has signed a contract with the Organizers that will keep Fantasy Fest in its current form for at least two more years. The locals that were born and raised there say they intend to keep Fantasy Fest the way it is and has been for 40+ years and that the people who don't like it can go kick rocks for a week. With that being said I will break down some generalizations about the event before going into a day by day break down.
The "Ugly":
  1. Consent issues. There seemed to be some consent issues with touching at some events and on the street. On one night I brought in a female friend and she was grabbed and touched several times as we walked through crowded areas. I was touched/grabbed without consent about 6 times throughout the week which I don't panic about but still not cool. There were events where there was public sex and people not involved in the sex felt that they could reach in and touch, this was especially prevalent with solo males (no big surprise there).
  2. Drinking. There was a lot of drinking and a lot of people who couldn't handle their liquor which resulted in people not always making the best decisions, not being in a state of mind to make the best decisions or just being an overall bad drunk.
  3. Costs. The average room rate for Fantasy Fest is @ $500 a night, an "average" bar and grill you'll be dropping about $20 per plate and at the fancier places its $50-75. Lots of the individual events are $20-30 to get in, some are free. The cost means that most people only do half the week. Either come in Saturday and leave Wednesday or come in Wednesday and leave Sunday. It seemed that the older crowd did the early week an the "younger" crowd the second half.
The "Bad":
  1. The overall average age is 50-65, there are "hot" couples and females but I would say a good 65% of attendees fit in that age range.
  2. People in the LS tend to be looking for the elusive unicorns, some couples would be open to swapping but it seemed that the majority of couples were more looking for a 3rd girl.
  3. Crowds and service. Duval street and the various venues in the main areas get crowded and by no fault of their own the venues don't have the staff to handle such large crowds.
The "Good";
  1. Lots of different events both risqué and not to attend.
  2. People watching and just having an overall good time.
  3. If bi-curious this would probably be the best place to experiment or engage in it.
  4. Open container laws means you can carry drinks as long as it’s not glass.
  5. Lots of people in a small area means bumping into the same people over the week.
So to start of like I mentioned in the ugly, costs to stay at Fantasy Fest can be expensive. With the average hotel charging $400-500 a night for 300 sq ft. If you plan on going I would recommend looking at VRBO or AirBnB like right now or the week or two before the event to try to find a great deal, especially close to Duval. I got extremely lucky in that last November I was browsing VRBO on basically a daily basis and caught a 1200 sq ft, 3 BR, 2 BA, with a private pool and its own driveway a half block away from Duval for $500 a night, with taxes, fees and insurance I paid $6100 that I split with my friend for 9 nights. I will say I was afraid they might cancel when they realized what they did and that the property was sold to Last Key Reality which generously honored the booking. I looked for next years Fantasy Fest and the same property for 9 nights is listed for right under $15K without the taxes and fees so I will say staying there was a once in a lifetime experience.
I arrived on the first Saturday to check into the house and there wasn't much going on. There was a parade going down Duval that I could watch from my porch and I went down to Captain Tony's which is the home of Krewe de Krazy life a Krewe that has a clunky, out of date and somewhat difficult to navigate web page that has nightly events there. There Krew is mainly older couples 55+. That night was suppose to be Little Black Dress night there. Walking the 1.5 miles from my rental saw a lot of ladies and some men in black dresses. When I got there (around 9 pm) it wasn't that busy and the Krewe really didn't have anything to mark a meeting area so I only stayed a little over an hour and nothing too crazy seemed to be going on so after a long day of traveling I decided to call it a night.
Sunday was another slow day. I went to the Krewe de Krazy Life meet and greet and like mentioned previously it was mainly 55+. I did meet one nice couple a hot wife named Dana and her husband John who where in their mid to late 40’s. Later that night I would go out and watch the Zombie Bike ride. I went and hung in front of Captain Tony’s which was getting busier and crowded enough that they shut down the street in front of the bar from this night on even though it was not that busy inside. Outside lots of revealing outfits, women flashing. Bumped into Dana and John again and they told me how they were kicked out of the pool bar at the hotel after letting people go down on her.
Monday. I had planned on going to a pool party at the Perry but it was the only event of Fantasy Fest that wasn’t anywhere close to Duval (4 miles) and would have been a $20 Uber ride one way so I skipped out. That afternoon a female friend of mine flew in. I had gotten us tickets to the Kinky Carnival as I thought it would be a more curated event. It was sold out and shoulder to shoulder packed. The first thing we saw when we walked in was a guy going down on a woman on a counter. The bdsm stations were hard to access as it was packed and I could tell immediately that my female friend was overwhelmed. We walked through the crowd and she told me that she was touched several times without being asked and I could tell her attitude towards the event was no longer open so we left and went to hang out at Captain Tony’s as it was kink night there also. It was also crowded and we ended up hanging out outside where there was always a crowd at night. That’s where I initially met Devon and Heather, a m/f couple who attend FF occasionally in search of the ever elusive unicorn. They chatted us up and they saw my friend had no interest and we eventually moved on (though I would bump into these two several more times and have drinks with them throughout the week). We went to Irish Kevin’s for awhile, went to check out Garden of Eden where she again was overwhelmed by the crowd. Finally we headed to the drag show at Bourbon St where a fan of my female friend recognized her from her social media presence so that was a highlight for her I had tickets to American Pie 2 but decided to skip out on it.
Tuesday. I explored the tourist spots on Key West. I went to check out the 4th of July Party at Dante’s and it was relatively busy. Lots of topless women, $10 to get in. Nothing to wild going on. Later I went to the tutu pre party bar crawl and the tutu party. I would say this was one of the best overall nights for me. The place were they had the party was packed. People having a great time. I didn’t see anything to wild going on, just lots of people having a really good time! Wildest thing was that I actually bumped into someone I knew from my hometown that was also there for FF, talk about a small world!
Wednesday. My friend who I was sharing the property with flew in this morning and I. The afternoon we went and caught part of the Krew De Krazy life ABC event. I also had their clothing optional cruise booked that day. On that cruise I met Alex who is a single late 20’s male that was also attending for his 1st time. Alex is a self described “dirty dog” and into older ladies so he was right at home on that cruise. Like I mentioned earlier the Krew skews older so there wasn’t anyone who really caught my eye, the people were friendly and I enjoyed being nude and drinking. Things didn’t get wild until after sunset. I’ll leave that up to your imagination. Alex did end up with a decent looking European retired hot wife. I would bump into him at several other events and he was pretty much always “busy” with a hotwife or single female. Oh to be young again… Later that night I went to an event I found one Eventbrite which was a kink event presented by Submission. This event again was one of my favs. Only 50-75 people showed up but a few hot couples who weren’t shy in front of a crowd and a few good looking females who didn’t mind messing around made this event a good time for me. My friend went to the ABC party at Aqua. He said that it was pretty dead and ended up spending most the evening at the Glow Party which he said was a good time.
Thursday. My friend and I met up with Alex at Dante ‘s Halos and horns party which was absolutely packed. Nothing to exciting going on again, just a bunch of topless women and people having a good time. Unlike other events besides Duval street in general, this had the largest law enforcement presence. My friend and I hung out awhile but decided it was a little to crowded for us, especially as it was day, a little hot and it was tough to get into shady areas. Later that night we went to the Burlesque show which we both enjoyed. Then to the Exxxposed party which got pretty wild. Saw Alex there as well. Lots of kink, bi and gay activity going on there. A few attendees did have consent issues with touching without asking or being invited in but overall a good time. This was also one of my most enjoyed events.
Friday. I did a clothing optional freaky flamingo cruise that I found via one of the Key West Reddit pages. I haven’t been able to pin down who the actual organizer is and if it’s a yearly thing. Anyhow this was a swingers cruise with a mid 20s-50s demographic that sailed and spent 2-3 hours at a sandbar. Alex so happened to be on this one also and it was a overall good time. After that my friend and I went to the Masquerade March which was another highlight of my trip. Nothing to wild, just locals and tourists in a somewhat organized parade in all sorts of costumes and spots to get a free drink. Devon and Heather and joined the parade so chatted with them again. My friend and I were suppose to go to a drag show that night but it was canceled so we ended up checking the human art expo, then went to the Garden of Eden. Friday night is when they also shut down and barricade most of Duval at night for the famous fantasy zone so lots of eye candy going on. I had a ticket to the Pimps and hos party which ended up being really dead. They had changed the venue the week before and the new venue had a drag show that ran til 10 pm which is when the party was suppose to start. They ended up not starting the party till 11 pm and there wasn’t any theming or anything like that. Definitely was not worth it.
Saturday. We went on a Fury snorkeling trip, after which I stopped by to check out the pool party at Bourbon Street Pub which was co-ed. wasn’t as busy as Tuesday night but a good amount of people there and frisky behavior going on. We had decided to spring for a reserved table at the Hard Rock for the parade that night which was fun but short. I went to the Naughty nurses party which had the same issues as the previous night while my friend decided to go hang out at Club Eden again.
Sunday. We did a drag brunch, I was going to try to check out a rehab party after my friend flew out but chilled back at my rental. During the course of the week I had bumped into a local edm DJ who noticed I was wearing a shirt of a certain label that he was a fan of and was invited to a unicorn party at a venue that night which I went to. Even though fantasy fest was officially over that particular venue did not have issues with nudity and the spicy acts that some people decided to engage in though the attendance was very small.
Monday. I finished packing a flew back home.
Overall it was an enjoyable time and when I arrived back home I was keen on trying to make a return for the event as soon as I could until I looked at how much I had spent for the entire trip in total. For 10 night including my rental, flight, various event tickets, food, etc I figured I dropped $5-6K on the trip. The only way I was able to do that was because I didn’t travel during Covid and saved back my usual travel budget from the previous year and tbh I was still thinking about cancelling this trip last minute because I knew what the costs could be. However like I mentioned previously you only live once and I knew I had gotten a steak on the rental so doing Fantasyfest this way was a once in a lifetime experience.
I decided I will eventually try to go back and when I do I’ll more than likely fly in Sunday evening/early Monday, do the kinky carnival, tutu Tuesday, glow party and exposed party along with a submission event and fly out Friday. I think that would be the best time. Also I will go for much cheaper accommodations and try and keep my costs to $2-3K which is about what the same amount of time at a ls resort would cost.
So if you have the time and money I would highly suggest checking it out, especially if you are a bi-curious male as I turned down 2 3some encounters and one male gay couple during my time there. If you aren’t into large crowds and are prone to anxiety or panic attacks I would pass. As long as you can behave yourself and respect others you’re sure to have a good time at Fantasyfest.

2023.02.01 20:04 throwRA100171 Carnival Mardi Gras or Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas?

Hi everyone! I was looking for a little help making a decision.
My boyfriend and I are looking to go on a cruise this spring/summer and we can't decide which one to take. We have it narrowed down to either sailing on the Oasis of the Seas in early June (going to Orlando, Nassau, and CocoCay). We would be leaving from Cape Liberty, NJ, or...
Our other option is cruising in May from Orlando to San Juan, Amber Cove DR, and Grand Turk aboard the Mardi Gras. The prices on the 2 cruises are only negligibly different, but we live in PA so NJ is a way closer port.
We have both been on 2 cruises (both Carnival, the Pride & Legend out of Baltimore). They were both great experiences but I know both ships I mentioned are big steps up from those. I like the itinerary more on the Mardi Gras, and actually like the look of the ship better (I think), but I would also love to try something new. We are both in our mid 20s.
Would anyone be able to offer insight?

2023.02.01 16:59 Noblesse311 Character Concept [97]: AUS Ranger (Kaiserreich: Legacy of the Weltkrieg)

Faction:
Pelican Commonwealth (American Union State)

Class:
Ranger-class Aircraft Carrier (Based on Lexington-class)

Background:
In an alternate timeline…
With the end of the First Weltkrieg in 1919, the United States of America found itself in the midst of a four-way naval arms race, also involving the victorious German Empire as well as the still fairly prominent United Kingdom and Empire of Japan, both of whom having something of an axe to grind following their defeats by German arms. While the U.S had been building warships during the tail end of the Weltkrieg, having laid down the Colorado-class Battleships \1]) and was still at the time building the Lexington-class Battlecruisers, consideration was made towards the development of ship-based air power. Though a number of seaplane carriers were built before and during, and were used during the Weltkrieg, it was the British Royal Navy that would make the innovative step of developing a flight-decked ship for naval aviation in the form of HMS Furious and HMS Argus, the latter being the first standard-pattern carrier that would be emulated around the world.
The end of the war helped begin America’s plans towards naval aviation, with the first aircraft carrier, USS Langley, the former Proteus-class collier ship, USS Jupiter. \2]) While the experiments continued, plans were being made for a conversion of other ships into an aircraft carrier. One such plans called for the conversion of one or more of some of the still incomplete Lexington-class Battlecruisers. The plans that were drawn up were a series of compromises and mixed blessings that many naval historians considered would not have arisen had they opted to build a carrier “from the ground up” from the beginning. \3]) While the planned conversion would feature better anti-torpedo protection, larger magazines for aircraft bombs and more room for aircraft landings, the runway would not be as wide, a half-knot (0.58 mph or 0.93 km/h) slower than a purpose-built carrier, and less emergency fuel. Despite this, a purpose-built carrier would have been more expensive to construct than attempting to convert \4]), and with the U.S. economy stagnating (the collapse of the French government in 1920 and the impending collapse of the British government and subsequent fall to Syndicalism in 1925 contributing to America’s “Black Monday” on 20 April that year) the decision was made to convert two of the Lexington’s, USS Ranger (CC-4) and USS Constellation (CC-2) into aircraft carriers.
USS Ranger was the penultimate ship among the Lexington’s to be laid down, having done so on 18 August 1920, she was launched on 3 May 1925 and would be formally commissioned under her new hull classification number, CV-2 on 14 July 1927, with her sister as CV-3 entering service in 1928. The two sisters would make up Carrier Division 3, based in Norfolk, Virginia, and would remain together until the outbreak of the Second American Civil War in 1937.
After an initial shakedown cruise that took her to Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo, as well as flight training operations in the Virginia Capes throughout the remainder of the 1920s, she would sail to the Caribbean to take part in a number of “Fleet Problems.”
By 1936, USS Ranger would field a total of 78 aircraft for varying roles, among them being 21 fighters consisting of the Boeing F4B, Grumman FF and their combined replacement in the Grumman F3F. For offensive operations against ground targets and enemy ships, a total of 21 Martin BM Torpedo Bombers and 36 Vought SBU Dive Bombers \5]) would make up the carrier’s air arm in the lead-up to the chaos of the mid 1930s and especially in the leadup to the 1936 U.S. Presidential Election that saw John Nance Garner be elected by Congress. The political and societal crisis culminated with the 15 February Coup d’etat that saw Garner removed and Douglas MacArthur assume leadership. \6])
It is in this that we turn to another of the warring factions of the conflagration that is the Second American Civil War (1937-1943), that of the American Union State. Huey Pierce Long Jr., the 1936 Presidential Candidate representing the America First Party (AFP) and former Senator representing, and Governor of Louisiana. After the coup was launched, Huey Long fled to Louisiana’s state capital of Baton Rouge, where he would meet with influential businessmen and state governors throughout the American South. In this, they would draft the AFP’s declaration of legitimacy against MacArthur, decrying his government for failing to protect the citizens of the United States, and the role of the state to protect the welfare of the poor. But the striking matter was the statement of their constitutional right to organize a militia against tyranny, and to defy the order of MacArthur to cease all resistance. This draft, signed on 24 February 1937, would mark the formation of the American Union State (AUS), and true to Long’s word, began organizing the AFP’s paramilitary units, known as the Minutemen for the impending Civil War.
The formation of the AUS would be the first domino to fall, one that would be followed by Jack Reed making a similar statement in the formation of the Combined Syndicates of America in the Great Lakes and Rust Belt states, and the governors of the Pacific States led by Frank Merriam not recognizing MacArthur’s coup and declaring for democracy, a move that would also be shared by various New England governors, who invited the Canadian Army and exiled British Army to occupy those states to prevent their fall to MacArthur or to the Syndicalists. This would also serve as a detrimental effect to the U.S. military, as many units would desert to join their ideological brethren with the Pacific States, AUS, Combined Syndicates of America or with the New England government. This would also include USS Ranger, who managed, under the cover of darkness, to leave Norfolk with a number of other warships. Ranger’s captain and crew, declaring for the Longists, would arrive at the port of New Orleans alongside the battleships USS Tennessee and USS Maryland and a number of Cruisers and Destroyers, forming the Battle Fleet of the American Union State, with Ranger as its flagship.
Upon the outbreak of war on 17 March 1937, Ranger’s career would be one that in a manner, simulate that of the High Seas Fleet during the First Weltkrieg, launching raiding attacks on Federal and Syndicalist held coastal ports and engaging the Federal and Syndicate Fleets at times. It was aircraft from Ranger as well as AUS Army Air Force units that helped in the capture of Newport News early on in the war, securing for the Longists the shipbuilding facilities as well as the two Yorktown-class Aircraft Carriers that were still under construction there at the time. \7]) In the Battle of the Virginia Capes on 7 March 1938, also, and perhaps most famously known as the Battle of the Three Navies, it was the aircraft of AUS Ranger that helped sink the Syndicate Battlecruiser CNS Constitution and Syndicate Protected Cruisers CNS Des Moines and CNS St. Louis, as well as Federalist Armored Cruiser USS Missoula. This would coincide with the fall of Washington D.C. by May that year and the flight of MacArthur and his clique to Denver, Colorado, though it came with the loss of AUS Houston and AUS Cleveland.
Ranger would also be present for a later battle, the Battle of Cape Henry against the Syndicate’s captured aircraft carrier, CNS Constellation as well as Yorktown-class derivative, CNS Miracle of May on 16 March 1940. Ranger, now equipped with more modern aircraft designs such as the Bell FL Airabonita and F2L Seacobra fighters \8]) and captured and reverse-engineered TBF Avengers (the copies being known as TBL Avengers) launching strikes against the Communard fighters, both on carriers and from bases as far off as New Jersey. (though that was limited due to Canada’s and New England’s intervention that began earlier that month) The conflict, which saw Ranger take a hit that would put the carrier out of action for the remainder of the war, and also saw the sinking of AUS Hornet, would also see a pound of flesh taken from the Combined Syndicates, with Constellation sink and Miracle of May badly damaged, and ultimately finished off by Canadian bombers as it limped back to base in New Jersey.
Ranger would remain in drydock for over a year, though the Civil War was still raging, the fall of many of the coastal bases for the Syndicates effectively ended the CSA’s navy, and the overall naval war of the conflict, while the Pacific States Navy would be a formidable threat, they were also an ocean away and away from any reliable naval bases that the AUS could use to challenge them. And so it was that Ranger would spend the remainder of the war in exercises, with a reduced air wing, a situation lasting until the Rocky Mountain Ceasefire signed in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1943.
The aging aircraft carrier, as of 1948 remains in service with the American Union Navy, a relic by that point for a navy finding itself hopelessly outmatched by their New Englander and Canadian counterparts in the upcoming Kalterkrieg, but one that has had decades of significance tied to her.
\1]: As of Update 0.22, the Colorado-class no longer exists.)
\2]: As happened IOTL. Also, as of Update 0.22, Langley no longer exists, though the debate stands on whether or not with the current canon, if she would have ever existed as a carrier to begin with.)
\3]: A sentiment that was the case IOTL.)
\4]: IOTL, the amount of money spent to convert the Lexington’s were slightly higher. A new carrier would’ve cost US$27.1 million, vs $28.1 million to convert the OTL Lexington’s. However, the total amount also includes the $6.7 million that was already spent in getting the OTL USS Lexington and USS Saratoga up to the point they were in when the decision was made to convert them. As the Lexington’s were laid down and constructed according to the original 1916 design [This is due to Kaiserreich’s PoD, that being Germany does not reinstate unrestricted submarine warfare, thus keeping the U.S. out of the war] it is likely that the money required to construct two of the Lexington-class BC’s ITTL would be slightly smaller in amount than OTL.)
\5]: Listing the aircraft here:)
\6]: As told in Character Concept #93.)
\7]: At the start of the game, the Yorktown-class design is available for the U.S. [and by extension, for all of the warring nations of the Second American Civil War], however none of the Yorktowns were in any of the fleets in-game nor were any being built.)
\8]: The FL Airabonita (known IOTL as the XFL Airabonita) developed as a light carrier fighter intended to fully retire the remaining biplanes in service, competing against the XF5F Skyrocket and XF4U Corsair. The XFL was not chosen however, and it is likely implied that the competition was ultimately won by the albeit not “light” F4U. The F2L however was IOTL, the designation for two Bell P-39Q Airacobra’s used as target drones. It wouldn’t be out of place however for Bell to manufacture the type as a carrier-based fighter ITTL.)

AUS Ranger is the Tier I Aircraft Carrier (Converted Battleship Hull with Man the Guns active) used by the navy of the American Union State in the Hearts of Iron IV game mod, “Kaiserreich.” AUS Ranger is Kaiserreich’s version of the eighth incarnation of USS Ranger. This timeline’s version of the Ranger-class aircraft carrier is based on our timeline’s equivalent to the Lexington-class Aircraft Carriers. Although a timeline with no Washington Naval Treaty meant the continued construction and development of big-gun battleships, there were still various nations that took interest in aviation and its potential. The United States would, by the 1936 start date, field three carriers at game start. They would consist of the two-ship Ranger-class, Ranger and Constellation, and USS Massachusetts, the sole ship in her class, and was converted from the Tillman design, in-game known as the South Carolina-class. It should be noted however that this is fewer than what the U.S. would field in unmodded Hearts of Iron IV within the same timeframe (Langley, Lexington, Saratoga & Ranger, with Yorktown and Enterprise partially built)

Namesake:
A ranger is a keeper, guardian or soldier who ranges (re: wanders) over a region to protect the area or enforce the law.
Historically, ten warships (eight of them commissioned) in the U.S. Navy bore the name of “Ranger.” They are as follows:

Rarity:
SSR

Stat Spread:
As AUS Ranger is largely based on the Lexington-class Carrier design, her stat spread largely matches those of the in-game Lexington-class Aircraft Carriers, USS Lexington and USS Saratoga. She sports fairly decent, if unremarkable firepower (C), and speed (C), has a fairly decent anti-air stat (B) and her HP pool is respectable (A), as is Ranger’s Aviation stat (A)

Abilities:

Personality:
Ranger is a person of convictions, fighting solely for what she believes in. She is not afraid to do morally questionable things and firmly believes that, even if what she does could be considered evil, she is willing to do so if it means that people would be better off.

Quotes:

Design:
Ranger is depicted as a woman in her early twenties with mid-back length pink hair that is tied into a pair of pigtails and matching colored eyes. Her attire is largely distinct compared to her counterparts in the Lexington-class, and is perhaps closer in style to IOTL’s USS Ranger. This attire consists of a white, low-cut t-shirt (revealing a bit of upper chest), with a black officer’s jacket over it. She wears a brown belt across the t-shirt from the left shoulder coming down rightwards, black trousers and grey boots.
Ranger’s rigging is largely dissimilar to the style used by her sister ship PSS Lexington and is similar to her OTL equivalent in USS Lexington. This takes the form of the Springfield Model 1873 Breech-Loading Rifle with her island superstructure attached to the base or “butt” of the rifle. Attached to the island is a flag that serves as the runway for her aircraft, however the underside (or reverse) of the flag features the bronze version of the Great Seal of the United States on a Blue background, representing the flag of the American Union State.

A/N:
After having worked on two ships representing the Pacific States of America, I've finally moved to a new faction in the Second American Civil War, the American Union State. The American Union State is somewhat fascinating as far as American dictatorships go.
Unlike the other factions in the Second Civil War, the AUS is the only faction in which all three routes taken will be some form of a dictatorship, with three different flavors. To quote from TVTropes, either Huey Long (the Authoritarian Democratic route) can enforce his economic and racially progressive policies while being President for Life under a one-party state and a paramilitary that crushes any opposition to the state...
Or you can have the War Powers Committee (headed by General George Van Horn Moseley, the faction representing the Paternal Autocratic route) take over and create what is essentially a modern-day take on the Roman Republic (more so the Republic as how it was run under what I term the "Crisis of the First Century BC") a Republic built on a system of oligarchcal and elite-controlled captains of industry who is the real power behind the government...
Or you can have the Silver Legion (the National Populist route, and historically was very pro-Nazi) headed by William Dudley Pelley who turns the former U.S. into the Commonwealth of America, a virulently white supremacist and Christian Nationalist state that according to devs and fans alike, is perhaps the absolute worst ending for the U.S. in Kaiserreich as a whole. Essentially a Nazi version of Gilead from "The Handmaid's Tale."
Either way you go about it, the AUS is pretty much the guaranteed dictatorship route. And it is fascinating, but also very frightening, especially the further down the chain you go. As always, since I'm using Kalterkrieg's background as a basis for the scenario, officially, the Longists win out in the power struggle, albeit sans Huey Long, who gets assassinated (by the WPC in secret) but is forced to back the Longists after Pelley uses the opportunity to coup the government, leading to Huey Long's brother (Earl Kemp Long) taking power. Why I went through the details with the AUS and not the PSA, because the PSA is maintaining the democracy of the pre-Civil War U.S. so there isn't much to go on barring well, choosing to keep the capital in Sacramento or not honestly.
As always, if you want to suggest a ship or retrofit in the future, please leave it in the comments below, you can also reach me via DM's to make your suggestions as well. Next time, we're going back to Strangereal, as I cover my first actual warship representing Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception, we're talking about Aurelia's Los Angeles-class Submarine, ARFA Naiad.

2023.02.01 15:24 MQuattrochi [Beneath the Midnight Earth] - Chapter 49.1

Beneath the Midnight Earth - [Cover Art] [Prologue] [Previous Chapter]
On the edges of the Antarctic city of Port Jackson, the remnants of Earth's southern cultures struggle for survival following a merciless climate crisis. Among them are June, a cunning specialist bent on securing her safety, Santiago, an upstart politician determined to help others, and Leo, who, along with his brother Gael, seek to take humanity's future into their own hands.
Tensions rise as fringe groups attempt to destabilize the uneasy peace, and when long-buried secrets begin to thaw amid the melting ice, they must work to hold the remnants of society together - or risk smothering out its last spark.

Chapter 49.1
- We are well and truly blinded here. Fog bound.

From the narrow window of the beached ship, Santiago imagined he could just make out June’s iridescent-white hair whipping on the shore. A katabatic wind current would be making its way down the coast that night, but the preceding hours before its arrival were calm – relatively speaking – with a warm front coming in from the Pacific making the day somewhat bearable. The ship itself listed at a slight angle as it sat perpendicular to the shore, and although it forced Santiago to peer down at his feet wherever he walked to maintain his balance, the men and women who called this place home seemed to have no problem navigating its tilted halls. They’d offered for June to have a seat at the table as well, but she’d declined. She wasn’t one for ships anymore, even if this one did sit partially on solid ground. Maybe after we overthrow the government, she joked. We’ll see.
He turned his attention back to the woman in front of him as the slate balanced between her index finger and thumb bounced up and down slightly before tilting over to reveal a pair of tired eyes.
“Your proposal is to starve the city of power, hm? A city that’s grown so used to outages and food shortages in the past few years that even toddlers know to have their own caches stashed beneath their cribs?” she croaked with a coarse voice, dipping her head so that her violet and blue dreadlocks formed a sort of curtain over her shoulders. Tui was a hard woman – she had to be, living and leading people who called this encampment, this congregation of old cruise and transport ships, home – and she didn’t seem particularly impressed with what Santiago was putting forward.
He shrugged, turning his attention back to the window and the soft glow of the aurora raining down from below. From the third or fourth meeting with dissident groups, it had become clear that simply showcasing their small victories and asking for help wouldn’t cut it – these groups had been independent for close to a decade now and wouldn’t come together unless their leaders saw real opportunity; a more powerful movement that they could latch on to and ride to greener pastures. Something they couldn’t risk missing out on lest it get ahead of them and be lost. The way Tui behaved fell in with the rest, and Santiago had a pretty good idea of what his response should be – muted. Not entirely uninterested, but certainly far from exigent, like he could do without their help. Fear of missing out was a powerful thing, after all.
“If it comes down to it, that’s one of the many options at our disposal,” he said, an aloof note in his voice. “Of course, I don’t know how far-reaching those outages will be. I’d love to be able to give you and your people a heads-up of when they’ll hit.”
She leaned back in her chair, opening up the distance between them and ignoring the implications of what he was saying. You can be part of the offensive, or you can become collateral damage. “And you expect the new Director to roll over when you do? Tell me, who do you think the people are going to blame when they can’t cook their packaged foods? Who will the feeds point their fingers at then, hmm?”
Santiago bit his lip casually, drummed his fingers on the table, and pointed to her slate. “You’ll need to charge that to connect to the feeds. The feeds will need power to broadcast. And when you get bored of staring at empty air, you’ll probably go out looking for a snack, isn’t that right? And if all your savings are in crypto, you’ll need power to pay for them.
“Zenith can punt that shit-filled can as far as they want,” he said, leaning forward to retrieve his slate from Tui’s hands, “but as they say – shit rolls downhill. Ultimately, the failure to reign in a plucky band of terrorists will be on them.”
Tui pulled the slate back as Santiago’s hand came close, waving it like a fan in front of her face. Around them, a half dozen armed Polynesians waited for her reply. Santiago knew that they could remove him from the ship at any time if Tui said the word, and he fought to keep calm. He had to. All the confidence, all the aloofness, was an act meant to make himself look big. It didn’t matter how many transports they’d lost at Highjump or how many willing participants they had left under their employ – right now, they had leverage over Zenith, however slight, and Santiago was exploiting it for all it was worth. By acting distanced, by feigning confidence, he was telling Tui, You can get on board now or you can step aside and deal with the consequences later. We’re going to bulldoze through Zenith one way or the other.
A few tense seconds passed before the woman’s confidence cracked.
“Fine,” she said, tapping the table as she let out an unsatisfied breath. A long encryption key materialized in blocky, green letters, which she waved into the slate before sliding it back across the table to Santiago. As much as he wanted to breathe out in audible relief, he held his breath instead, prompting Tui to elaborate. “You can use that to contact us when things are further along. But burn us and you’re done, aye drongo?”
A curt nod hid a satisfied smile as Santiago collected his belongings. He was escorted out by one of Tui’s crew – a man easily an entire head taller than he was – who guided him through the dripping corridors of the ship until they reached the beach. There, he could see June begin to make her way to him, but before he could step out onto the sand, the man placed a meaty hand on his shoulder, remarking, “You could see him raise his bad shoulder, you know?”
Seeing visible confusion painted across Santiago’s face, he added, “Director Dunny. Takes a rail round to the shoulder and still points his own at you? Ratshit. Someone shoulda capped ‘im there’n then. Good standing, though. Glad Tui’s with you and not the other way around.”
“Oh – I, ah,” Santiago started, red in the face. Instinctively, his hand went up to rub the hair on the back of his head but found only stubble. “It was more impulse than planning, really. There were more railguns behind the camera, too – so I’m lucky to still be in one piece.” He paused for a second, wondering whether eating up the praise or brushing it off would serve him better, then added, “I guess I’m sorry my heroics couldn’t pull your lot at the old research station before the siege. We could’ve used you. But I’m glad Tui saw the light, even if it’s a little later than ideal.”
By now, June was on approach, and the man was waving Santiago off the makeshift platform that served as the entrance to the compound of hulking, tied-together ships. As he climbed off, the man shouted after him, “Chur. But I don’t know what station you’re speaking to. Saw you on the encrypted feeds, eh?”
Before he could ask the man what he meant, June was on him, reaching into her pack. “How’d it go with the Kiwis? And here, I got some nausea meds if you need them.” The line of compacted sand coming up behind her let him know they weren’t alone, and with a sharp whistle from June, the pair disappeared into the wind.
“Better than my first few attempts. Nothing concrete, but we have an understanding of sorts. They’ll fight for us if another coup rears its head, but actually getting things to boil over is a whole other, more complicated, problem.” He made the mistake of peering down and nearly stumbled, unable to see his feet behind Atlas’ cloak. Still, neither June nor himself left noticeable footprints on the black sands of the frozen shore. Unless someone had the foresight to look in the infrared spectrum, it was like they’d never been there at all. Atlas left its own path, but nothing that couldn’t have been made by a stray seal.
“Actually,” he continued as they reached the nearby bluffs, their looming walls providing some respite from the wind, “I’m starting to draw a line between the number of repeaters you and Xavi install and how successful our little outings are getting.”
“Xavier says it’s astounding – just the amount of misinformation that Zenith is putting out about us. Not just in the official news feeds either. They’ve been compromised for a while, but even on obscure sites, chats, all the big vid sites. He showed me the amount of content they were pumping out, and I couldn’t wrap my head around how they could be producing so much in so little time. Xavi has a theory that it’s mainly AI-generated content trained to latch onto any rumors about us and to tie it together to whatever people hate – robberies, assaults, immigrants and ethnic groups, whatever gets their fire going.”
They reached a path cut perpendicularly into the bluff and began up it, its narrow walls cutting the wind out completely so that June had to drop her voice from a yell down to a whisper. “So Xavi’s been putting together something similar, working remotely with Mara and some others in Port Jackson and Highjump. They started pumping material into encrypted feeds through the repeaters and, hey, if you say it’s getting some traction with the other groups, I guess they’re doing a good job.”
Santiago stopped in his tracks and listened to June’s continue for a few moments until she, too, halted.
“June,” he started, disappointment in his voice, “and be honest here – what seed did you use for that content?”
After waiting for her voice and receiving no reply, he tried again, this time dropping any semblance of ignorance. “I know you shared the video of me at Zenith.”
Another pause. Without being able to see her face, Santiago had to guess at how this was going to go – whether June would lash out at him for not being open to the idea, or rationalize his concerns away instead.
“You weren’t getting anywhere with those groups before because our movement didn’t have anybody in the public eye to lead it – it didn’t have a face for people to get behind. I gave them one.”
Santiago sighed. “You couldn’t have picked someone else? I was a shit politician before all this, and I’ll be a shit one afterward, assuming I’m not in the ground by then. Nothing’s changed in that regard. But that’s beside the point; did you think about how much more danger having my face all over those feeds is going to put me in? You couldn’t have gone for anyone outside the city? Chloe or Enzo, maybe?”
“They’re the old guard, Santi,” she said, her voice further away now. Santiago followed it, his steps slow and reluctant. “Half the city’s made up of bootlickers who are totally fine with what Gael is doing, and the other half may want him gone – but nobody wants to go back to the splintered Zenith we had before. To a Council that bickers for months while the lights go out across the city. Endless talk instead of tangible action. It needs to be a new face, and yours wasn’t around long enough to fit in with the rest. Better, actually – you showed you were good enough to be elected, but before you could make changes, you were pulled out of the fray. And, you showed you weren’t afraid to stand up to Gael.”
“Alright, fine,” he relented. “I guess I can see your point – but what about my safety? What if they catch wind that I’m here because of those vids?”
“I may be impulsive at times, but you gotta give me a little more credit – I did think about that. I ran it through Xavi, and he agreed that videos of the way you used to look would actually throw off whoever comes searching for you. And yes, it is stupid to plaster your face all over the feeds while you’re in town – which is exactly what Zenith thinks too. There’s no way they’ll suspect you of leaving Highjump after they catch wind of the video, much less that you came back to Port Jackson and are hiding out right under their nose.”
Santiago scoffed a little, finding that idea a little hard to believe. Port Jackson wasn’t the only settlement on the continent, but it was by far the largest, and though it had no legal authority over the others outside of what was granted to the Aussies by international bodies pre-crisis, it still operated as a de facto city-state, imposing its will across the rest of the settlements. If any one of them decided to peel away from Port Jackson, a simple shipping embargo would be enough to reign them in. They held little sway, and most had few methods of communication with one another. In effect, there were no useful places for Santiago to be other than Highjump or Port Jackson, and since they couldn’t raid the former, they’d probably be focusing all efforts on the latter.
“All I’m saying is you should’ve run it by me first, June,” Santiago said, trying his best to hit a note between stern and scornful; he could see the intention and reason behind her actions but couldn’t reconcile them with the risk she was taking with him. “Look, I get it; any little edge we can get is necessary, but what’s the endgame here? Were you picturing me hanging off one of those roided-out nomads like Gael did when the riots were going on, leading our troops to victory?”
“Not with your elbow still in a cast,” she joked. Santiago flexed his hand, feeling the dull pressure around his joint. It was getting better slowly – a little too slowly, for his liking – but at least it didn’t look like it would be a permanent injury.
“Seriously, June. I could play it up if it gets us more reinforcements, but you have to admit that it’s dangerous to have my face out there. Despite that, when the time comes to make our move, what’s going to happen if they see I’m not leading them? When they see the old guard at the forefront instead of me? That’s another risk altogether. If we promise them one thing and swap it out for another when it comes down to the wire, they could walk away or rebel. Are we willing to take that chance?”
By now, the pair had reached the top of the ridge, a whipping wind cutting off their conversation. Even with a clear sky and the aurora overhead, it was hard to see the path of tramped-down snow and exposed rock that would lead them back to the city proper. As Santiago started down it, he felt a tug on his sleeve and June’s breath in his ear as she strained against the howl of the wind.
“Before we worry about our allies betraying us,” she rebutted, “we need to get them on our side first.”

2023.02.01 11:35 KittenDealinMama I told my wife I’m not going on family holiday with her family

Originally posted by u/zombiefine3427 in TrueOffMyChest on Jan 18, '23, updated in the comments around Jan 19th and Jan 20th.
Original post
I told my wife no, I’m not going on family holiday with your family.
I always put my wife and her family first. I moved to my wife’s hometown because she wanted to be closer to hers.
Now her family and mine are total opposites. I’m an only child, She’s the eldest of 3. My extended family is 4 people including me, hers is 30+. My family are introverted and don’t drink, hers are super extroverts and booze whenever they can. My parents are disabled, hers are healthy. Honestly my family are “boring” and hers are “fun” and I’ve gotten used to it and it’s horrible to say but because of being around them so much I prefer hanging out with her family than I do my own.
I always do what she wants. I’m a pushover but “happy wife happy life”right? Even if it’s something I don’t want to do I do it to make her happy.
First dance at our wedding? Terrified and I didn’t want to do one. I don’t like being the centre of attention. She cried and I caved in.
Christmas? Her family is large so have a big fun party on Christmas Day and mines small and boring so she doesn’t want to be there.
Where to live? She wanted to be close to her family so now mines a 3 hour drive away and I hardly see them except for birthdays.
Well this year it’s her Grandmas 70th, her mums 50th and my 30th birthday so her family have planned a huge family holiday of 25+ people to be away for 3 weeks to celebrate everyone’s birthdays. The catch is its not on anyone’s birthday except mine, we’d fly home 1 day after my birthday.
Obviously my parents want to see me on my 30th and have said they’re upset because as usual I’m pandering to her family as always and they’re being left out again. I want to spend time with my family especially as I only really see them on birthdays, I’m used to their boringness but to do that apparently I’m ruining her family trip. But if I go on the trip I’m putting my family second again and further damaging that relationship. My parents are older and disabled and my Gran has early onset dementia, so they don’t have much time in comparison to hers.
We can’t get a shorter holiday, we can’t go at another time of the year because of work and school commitments.
So I told her no. For the first time ever I told her “No. I’m not going. You can but I’m staying here. I’m an adult I want to spend my birthday with my family”. To which she replied “I am your family” then stormed off and she’s not taking it too well. She’s acting like a spoilt child; crying, screaming, calling her mum to say she can’t go now because I’m not going, so now her family think I’m a massive dick and none of them can see that I have another side to my family.
She’s packed a bag since I started writing this and she says she’s going to stay at her mums until I can make up my mind what’s more important my family or hers.
I have no idea what to do. I just needed to vent.
Update 1
Update: Wow, I only wanted a place to vent didn’t expect such a response.
Just to clear a few things up. I love my wife and I’m not going to divorce her over this. She does so much for me and is normally a kind and loving person. We’ve been together 6 years married 18 months. We don’t have kids but are trying. We live in the UK and the reason why we can’t go at any other time is because of the UK laws on taking children out of school during term time for holidays so it’s been planned during the autumn break so the parents don’t get fined.
I woke up this morning to the following text from her mum:
“Do you know how disappointed I am in you right now! It’s not even that you’re not coming away for my birthday it’s the fact that you’re not supporting my daughter, you know how important family is to her! End of..u know how much she wants to come, and u telling her to go on her own is not being supportive, you’ve put a full stop to it all. I don’t get what your issue is? It’s one thing then another? And she can’t do right for wrong in trying!🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ it’s supposed to be a lovely family holiday for my 50th”
It’s made me even more determined to stand my ground. I think I’m going to take the advice of u/artneedsmorefloof and send her mum my reasoning. They seem to forget I have parents too.
I just don’t want to be hated, this holiday is 8 months away and I don’t want 8 months of hate especially when we live in such close proximity.
Update 2
Last night my wife and I went out for dinner, my idea so we could speak and I hoped being in a public place would make her less likely to scream/cry etc.
I told her all the advice that I had read on here and showed her the text I received from her mum. She listened to everything I had to say and I could see her physically cringe when she read the text. She apologised for the way she had acted and said she hadn’t even considered it from my POV.
I told her I what one Redditor had said (sorry so many comments I can’t remember a name). If we’re doing this for 30,50,70 what’s going to happen at 40,60,80 or 50,70,90. Are we going to have this spoilt child situation when she’s nearly 40 or are we going to leave it behind now in her 20s
She told me her family had all got together to book the trip the night she left and she felt shitty because I said we weren’t going so now no one had booked “until I’d finished throwing my toys out the pram”.
I told her I didn’t say WE can’t go, I said I wasn’t going but she could. (I ignored the toys/pram comment as that pissed me off)
I reminded her that her mums actual birthday was 2 weeks before we fly and her Nans birthday is in 2 weeks from now. She’ll get to spend time with them, have a party etc on the actual day and that’s something I want for myself too. I don’t want to be away from my family in a different country with 25+ people I don’t know that well on my 30th. I want to do something with my family over my birthday before it’s too late. My mums health is rapidly deteriorating and she can’t do much as it is and who knows how long my Gran has before this dementia really sets in.
My mums always talked about doing a Baltic cruise/ see the northern lights for my Grans 80th but that’s still 2 years away and I honestly don’t think in 2 years either of them will be in any fit state so I suggested we do it for my 30th instead. My wife seemed keen and pulled up some dates. Theres one that leaves 3 days before my birthday and comes back 3 days after - perfect timing.
We called my mum to ask and she sounded delighted. She herself hadn’t even considered how my Gran would be at 80 and thought it would be a lovely trip to make memories on.
We then went to her mums house. (No apology or anything from her but you can’t win everything) to tell her together WE weren’t going for the 3 weeks but we’d found (my wife had found) a 1 week booking that coincided with their 3 week trip in a hotel that was just down the beach, same chain/resort just a different building. Enough distance to have our own break but still include the family for evening meals etc. No one had even suggested looking at shortened dates and I hadn’t even considered it until I read so many comments saying just come back sooner.
All in all I’m going to take this as a win (I don’t think my bank balance will though). She’s seen me put my foot down and mean it. I’m not going to let have her way all the time at my own detriment. I’ve not caved for an easier life and together we found a peaceful solution. My family haven’t been excluded and are so excited, my mums like a kid at Christmas, and hers are well… happy they can book now and at least the “asshole SIL” is only there for a week. Hopefully as it’s not for 8 months they might forget 🤷🏻‍♂️?
Screw the happy wife happy life mentality. I’ve never heard happy spouse happy house before but I think I’ll be using that mantra from now on. Like you all said it’s a 2 way street, give and take, compromise.
Thanks to everyone for the advice and support.
Reminder that I am not the original poster. This is a repost. Flairing this concluded as OOP and his wife have compromised and come to an understanding.

2023.02.01 05:51 Ok_Lengthiness_8163 Excursion price match guarantee

So I tried to do a price match guarantee and it’s ridiculous.
First vendor got denied because it had a catamaran instead of speedboat, which is technically a better boat for whale watching.
Second vendor got denied because the transportation transport from hotel not directly from the port, except that there’s a hotel right at the port.
So I fired an email back at customer service, they said I have to talk to the tour director once I’m on the boat. Whatever the price match team decided was final, no back and force.
Now my question is has anyone gotten price match at the tour desk on the cruise. Or am I wasting my time
—————————————-Update—————————— I complained to the guest service again and show them how it’s the exactly the same tour and they folded applied credit to the account.
I guess the standard procedure is to draw up some bogus elements on every claim. Then if they are at the wrong customers can push for it. Just a hassle.

2023.02.01 05:44 onimush115 Request: Port advice for Freeport and Bimini.

Booked a cruise from Norfolk, VA with carnival to the ports above. Trying carnival for the first time because we are not far from the port now.
Admittedly, I booked this cruise with little to no research. I just knew the month we wanted to go and what port. I saw stops in the Bahamas and thought that will be fun, we’ve never been to those.
As it’s getting closer, I’ve been looking into the ports since no excursions peaked our interest. Bimini looks like there is little if anything to do just looking at Google maps. Freeport seems to have the port in the worst location possible and it’s a good 20 minute car ride to the city area. Disappointed there are no hop on/hop off bus excursions available for that stop.
Any suggestions?

2023.02.01 05:40 beramaan First Cruise on Our Honeymoon, Any Recommendations?

My Fiance and I are looking at going on a Cruise in the Caribbean islands at the beginning of June (Not the best time for the area, but we don't want to do than Alaska), and I was wondering what recommendations you all might have. We have never been on a cruise before, but we like having most of the complicated parts of a trip planned for us.
I've been really interested in Celebrity Equinox because they have a glassblowing activity while on the ship. However, I'm open to any good lines with fun activities.
We don't drink alcohol or gamble, but do enjoy good food and would prefer good nightly activities/performances.
Edit: updating with more information We are in our early 30s and typically do road trips to go explore. Not into the party scene so like carnival is really not appealing. Looking to stay under $1k each preferably with an external balcony. We are in the Midwest so we'd have to travel to any US port. We're wanting to do a 5 day+ cruise

2023.02.01 04:50 xxSpeedsterxx Only hot sauce Carnival has is Tabasco and that's not all.

(Not a complaint) Just for everyone's information Tabasco is the only hot sauce Carnival offers so I bring dozens of Louisiana Hot Sauce packets with me. Works for me great. I can not tell you how many near me during breakfast that ask if I have an extra. I always do. Also, in the MDR and staterooms the only coffee creamer offered is white cream type. I always bring my Hazelnut powdered creamer with me. Can't rely on the cruise company to always offer our favorite items. Sometimes we have to take matters in our own hands. Again, not a complaint, just a heads up for others. Had a great cruise!

No experience necessary for the laborer custodial or maintenance mechanic positions. It helps on the interview but you can surely think of maintenance related experience to relay for an interview. Based on fixing things around your house, the car etc. Always mention working safely.

Pro tip: You can apply for any job that has an exam opening and the test is administered local to yourself. Make sure you're serious and score decently; you can turn down the job offer. Keep a physical copy of your exam score, I believe they are good for two years.
The reason is: These job postings can be posted externally at capacity for testing, meaning they will not allow you to take the exam if they have enough qualified applicants. However, if you have a test score on the books, you are a qualified applicant.

Explanation of MVO/TTO to save time:
MVO= CDL B Can only drive box trucks on public roads, can drive anything for moves on postal property.
TTO= CDL A Can drive anything.

USPS provides the training. (Maintenance jobs at least. TTO and management...GOOD LUCK)

You don't have to be crazy to work here. We'll train you. Everything but proper email usage.
